Kylo sighed loudly. "Great job!" he said to his wolf, knowing Luna was upset, and hating it because it was not his fault. He and his wolf both wanted separate things, plus to top it all off, tomorrow was a full moon.
As he lay there, the weight of everything seemed to press down on him. The full moon always heightened his senses, bringing the beast within closer to the surface. He could feel the restlessness stirring inside him, a primal energy that was difficult to contain. Tomorrow's full moon loomed over him, a reminder of the power that flowed through his veins and the responsibilities that came with it.
Kylo had a restless sleep, the guilt and pain of hurting Luna weighing heavily on his heart. He tossed and turned, unable to escape the tormenting thoughts that plagued his mind. The sudden arrival of Kiana added to his turmoil, her presence was an enigma he couldn't quite unravel. It was as if the universe conspired to keep him on edge, testing the limits of his resilience.
Through his fitful dreams, fragments of memories flashed before him. Luna's tear-streaked face, the sorrow in her eyes, and the finality of her words. "I think maybe we just need a break." The pain of their separation gnawed at him, a relentless ache that refused to be soothed.
As the night wore on, Kylo's body grew weary but his mind remained alert, haunted by the unresolved emotions. The full moon was only hours away, and its impending arrival seemed to amplify everything. He could feel the beast within stirring, restless and hungry for release. The primal energy pulsing through his veins was a constant reminder of his dual nature, a balance he struggled to maintain.
In the midst of this chaos, Kiana's arrival remained a mystery. What did she want? Why now? Her sudden appearance only added to the sense of unease that gripped him. Kylo knew he had to face these challenges head-on, but the weight of it all threatened to break him.
By dawn, he was exhausted, his body drained but his mind still racing. He knew the day ahead would be relentless, with the full moon pushing him to the brink. He needed to find a way to reconcile his inner turmoil, to find peace amidst the chaos. And perhaps, just perhaps, he could find a way to mend the rift with Luna and understand the motives behind Kiana's arrival.
Kylo dragged himself to school, feeling the heavy absence of Luna beside him. It was the first time he had to face the day without her comforting presence, and the weight of their separation loomed over him like a dark cloud.
"What happened? Did you make her mad?" Taliyah asked, her tone laced with curiosity and concern.
"Not the time for your jokes, Taliyah. I am not in the mood," Kylo replied sharply, as he dropped them off at the elementary school.
"Sheesh, you peed in your cornflakes," she remarked, her attempt at humor falling flat against Kylo's somber mood.
As he walked away, Kylo felt the exhaustion of the previous night's turmoil settle into his bones.
At school, he saw no sign of Luna and it made him even sadder. The absence of her familiar smile and gentle voice felt like an unbearable void. Each corner of the school grounds reminded him of the moments they had shared, now feeling painfully distant.
As Kylo trudged through the hallways, Pearl noticed his forlorn expression and walked up to him. "You okay?" she asked, her voice soft with genuine concern.
"Have you seen Luna?" he asked, his voice tinged with both hope and fear.
"Yeah, she texted me," Pearl replied. "Said she is sick today and wants me to bring her homework."
Kylo's heart sank a little, but knowing Luna was safe brought a small measure of relief. "Thanks, Pearl," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I appreciate it."
Pearl's eyes narrowed slightly as she studied Kylo's face. "Seriously, what is with you two?" she asked, her tone a blend of curiosity and concern.
"I, um," was all he could say before Kiana walked up and smiled at them. Kiana had just joined the school yesterday, but there was something about her that captivated Kylo's wolf. His wolf was undeniably drawn to her, yet Kylo himself felt a tangle of mixed emotions every time she was near. Pearl noticed the sudden change in Kylo's demeanor and understood the situation instantly. She greeted them warmly, her radiant smile brightening the otherwise gloomy hallway.
"Hey, Kylo. Hey, Pearl," Kiana said cheerfully. "What's going on?"
Pearl glanced at Kylo, then back at Kiana. "Just the usual school stuff," she said, her tone nonchalant. "How are you?"
Kiana nodded, her smile unwavering. "I'm good, thanks."
"Great," Kylo said, trying to act normal.
Pearl knew what was going on, and she was suddenly sad for Luna and understood why she was sick.
Just then, Cameron joined them, his face a little tense as he knew it was a full moon tonight. He decided it might be a good time to bring up the whole wolves thing with Kiana to see what she knew.
"Hey, everyone," Cameron greeted, trying to keep his tone light. "So, Kiana, how do you like the school so far?"
"It's been great," Kiana replied, her enthusiasm unwavering. "Everyone's really friendly."
Cameron nodded, glancing briefly at Kylo before continuing. "Say, you ever hear any interesting stories about wolves around here?"
Kiana's eyes flickered with curiosity. "Wolves? Not really. Why do you ask?"
"Just a local legend," Cameron said with a casual shrug. "Some folks say there are wolves that come out during the full moon."
Kylo tensed slightly, his eyes meeting Cameron's. Pearl watched the exchange with a mixture of interest and concern.
Kiana laughed softly. "That sounds intriguing. I'll have to keep an eye out tonight then," she said jokingly.
Cameron and Kylo exchanged a meaningful look, the weight of unspoken truths hanging heavily between them.
Kylo felt like he was going to be sick. He didn't want his wolf to deter away from Luna; it tugged at his heartstrings even more than it should. The fear of losing control, of letting his instinct take over, weighed heavily on him. He knew tonight would be a test, not only of his strength but of his loyalty and resolve.
"Are you okay, Kylo?" Kiana asked, her voice tinged with genuine concern.
Kylo forced a smile, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Yeah, I'm fine," he replied, though the tightness in his chest spoke otherwise. "Just a bit of a headache, that's all."
Pearl frowned, studying Kylo's face. "You sure? You don't look so good."
"I am fine," he said as the bell rang, leaving no more room to talk. Instead of heading to class, he went to see his Aunt Everest. As soon as he made it to her office, he burst into tears.
"Kylo, what is wrong?" Aunt Everest asked with concern, her voice gentle yet firm as she placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
Kylo struggled to find the words through his sobs. "Everything! This is all so wrong! Luna is hurt—I hurt her, and I didn't mean to, I just... ugh!" He buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with the weight of his anguish.
Aunt Everest held him tighter, her presence a calming anchor. "Breathe, Kylo. Tell me what happened."
Slowly, Kylo took a shaky breath, trying to steady his racing heart.
"I don't know how to explain it, Aunt Everest," Kylo began, his voice trembling. "My wolf is drawn to the new girl, Kiana, and it feels so wrong. I don't want to mate with her. I always thought it would be Luna, and she felt it too, I know she did. She's sick today, and it's like she knows I'm not going to choose her to be my mate. I want to, but I don't get that choice—my wolf does."
Aunt Everest listened intently, her brow furrowed in thought. "Kylo, you need to remember that your bond with your wolf is powerful, but it's not the only thing that defines you. You have a choice in how you handle this. Have you talked to Luna about how you feel?"
Kylo shook his head, "I tried to reach out, but she said she needs a break. Tonight is a full moon, Aunt Everest. I'm afraid that if I let my wolf out, he will smell Kiana and then bam!"
His voice broke with the intensity of his fears, his hands trembling. "What if I can't control it? What if I hurt Luna even more?"
Aunt Everest's gaze softened, and she lifted his chin so their eyes met. "Kylo, the strength of your bond with Luna isn't just about your wolf. It's about your heart and your choices. You need to trust yourself. Perhaps it would be wise to stay close to Luna tonight, show her that you care and are trying to fight this."
Kylo nodded slowly, taking in her words. "But what if it's not enough? What if my wolf...?"
Aunt Everest smiled gently, her eyes gleaming with understanding. "What if your wolf what? Decides Luna is not the one for him? Then so be it. Luna is still your friend no matter what, but if your wolf is smart, he will consider your feelings too. I may not be a wolf, Kylo, but I understand true love when I see it."
Kylo sniffled, looking up at Aunt Everest with a mixture of hope and fear. "You really think so?"
She nodded firmly. "Absolutely. Love is a powerful force, Kylo. It transcends the physical and the mystical. Trust in your bond with Luna and trust in yourself. You have more control than you realize."
A small, uncertain smile tugged at Kylo's lips. He felt a glimmer of hope, a tiny spark of strength rekindling within him. "I'll try, Aunt Everest. I'll try to stay close to Luna tonight and show her that I care."
Aunt Everest squeezed his shoulder reassuringly. "That's my boy. Remember, you're never alone in this. We're all here to support you."
With renewed determination, Kylo stood up, ready to face the night ahead.
School was over, and Kylo wanted to go find Luna, but as he stepped out of the building, Kiana intercepted him. Her eyes sparkled with a playful mischief, and a grin spread across her face.
"Hey Kylo, want to hang out for a bit? I was thinking we could go to the park or grab some ice cream. It's been a while since we just chilled, you know?"
Kylo hesitated, the weight of Aunt Everest's words still fresh in his mind. He knew he needed to stay close to Luna tonight, but he didn't want to disappoint Kiana either.
"I, um, I can't. Sorry, it's a full moon tonight," he said, trying to sound casual.
"So you don't believe Cameron's story about wolves?" she teased, raising an eyebrow.
"It's... complicated," Kylo replied, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly.
"You're worried about the full moon, that could only mean you are a wolf," she said, her tone a mix of mock seriousness and amusement.
Kylo's body language changed instantly. He stiffened, and his eyes lost their warmth, replaced by a blank, guarded expression.
"I was kidding, jeez," she said quickly, sensing she had touched a nerve. "Don't take it so seriously."
Before Kylo could say anything else, he shifted. The only reason he would shift early on a full moon is if his dad did, and he cursed his dad in this moment. "Holy crap!" Kiana exclaimed, eyes wide with shock and intrigue.
Kylo was not in control now. His wolf was, and he sniffed Kiana, the scent of fear and surprise blending in the evening air. He howled, a deep, primal sound that reverberated through the park. Without another glance at Kiana, he ran off, his powerful limbs carrying him swiftly into the forest. Kiana stood frozen, her mind reeling from the sudden transformation and the eerie howl that echoed in her ears.
