Working for Torchwood, especially after just getting out of the UNIT prison, had been a steep learning curve. It hadn't just been a matter of getting used to the Hub, her teammates, and the job itself; she'd also had to adjust to being free, able to go to the shops, or out for a drink, anytime she wanted, picking out what to wear each day, doing her makeup, getting her hair done… It had felt like a roller-coaster ride at first, but now, a few months in, she was finally starting to feel settled, comfortable.
"So." Jack came and leaned against her workstation.
She looked up at him, peering over the tops of her glasses. "Yes?"
"Christmas soon. Any plans? I don't know if you celebrate at all."
Tosh shrugged. "Not really. Anyway, I'll be at work, won't I? The Rift doesn't take holidays off, so we can't either." That was what Jack had told her when she'd joined the team.
"Maybe, maybe not." There was something in Jack's expression that Tosh couldn't quite fathom, like he was hiding a smile. "I've taken the liberty of inviting your family to Cardiff for the holidays, set them up with a suite at the St David's. I might need you to come into work occasionally, but the rest of the time, I'm sure you have a lot of catching up to do. Obviously, you can't tell them about Torchwood, I've told them you work in cyber security for the government, that your work is top secret, so I doubt they'll ask about it…"
Tosh could barely take in what Jack was saying. "M-My family?"
"Yep!"
"But I was told I couldn't have any contact with them!"
"Those were UNIT's rules, but you're Torchwood now. Spend time with your family, Toshiko. Happy Christmas."
