Soft morning light shone through the window bathing the crisp white linens in its golden hue. In the middle of their bed lay their baby with downy soft, chestnut hair and wide, blue eyes. Cooing at Elizabeth with the sweetest grin, as tiny fingers grasped her auburn curls.
Overcome with love, Elizabeth reached to snuggle her little one in closer when suddenly she woke up. As her eyes adjusted to the dim glow of the sunrise, the bittersweet realization hit her. It was only a dream. A glimpse of the future that awaited them in just four short months.
She adjusted slightly and placed her hand on her ever growing belly and was greeted with a strong kick.
"Good morning," her favourite voice said gently next to her.
Elizabeth smiled and slowly rolled over to face Nathan.
"Good morning, darling. I had the most wonderful dream."
Nathan placed his coffee mug on his bedside table and slid back down under their sheets and blankets until they were face to face.
"Oh really? Did you dream of me?" he asked teasingly with a wink and a quick kiss.
Elizabeth couldn't help but giggle and steal an extra kiss.
"Actually I dreamt of our baby," she answered, her voice suddenly catching with emotion
"Oh Lisbeth," he said barely above a whisper. He tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and then guided her closer until their foreheads rested together. "Tell me about it."
Nathan pushed scrambled eggs around the pan while Elizabeth poured coffee. The tender sweetness of her dream still on his mind. When everything was ready, he dished up the eggs with toast and fried slices of ham. The children had already enjoyed a quick breakfast and raced out the door to enjoy one of the last warm days of Autumn leaving Nathan and Elizabeth alone to bask in their slow and simple morning.
"I know we still have a few months to decide but have you thought of a name for this baby?" Nathan asked after saying grace.
"I have been thinking about it. I supposed we have to wait and see if it's a boy or girl before we know for sure," she replied logically but the dreamy grin on her face told another story.
"I always liked the name Luke but I'm not so sure we should use it," Nathan said, taking a big bite of eggs. Elizabeth looked up in time to see the teasing glint in his eye.
"No I guess we can take that one off the list," she agreed with a mischievous smirk.
"Oh! What about William? That's a good strong name. For your father and Bill," Elizabeth smiled at Nathan's suggestion. "We can call him Billy for short!" he continued.
Elizabeth eyes widened suddenly and she cringed. "Umm maybe we should keep thinking," she suggested, trying to keep her tone light.
"Mrs Grant, do you have something you'd like to share?" Nathan said with a laugh.
Elizabeth's cheeks flushed a very becoming and tell tale shade of pink. "It was a long time ago and it was really nothing but…" she tried to explain before looking up to see the amused look on her husband's face as he held back laughter. She scrunched her nose at him, "Any other ideas?"
"Okay, what about Charlie? Charles Grant. What do you think?" Nathan continued his suggestions.
Elizabeth slowly chewed her bite of toast before peeking up at Nathan, an offering an apologetic smile.
"Not that one either, eh? My, I never knew what a heartbreaker is married," he said with a wink.
He lifted another forkful to his mouth but stopped with his bite of ham mid-air. "Wait! Isn't that Julie's fiancé's name?" Nathan had recently been introduced to one Charles Kensington during his short visit in Hamilton. News of Charles and Julie's engagement came shortly after Christmas.
"Mhmm," Elizabeth nodded and smiled, "And I'll tell you the rest later."
Seeing the confusion and curiosity on Nathan's face, she continued with another suggestion, hoping to move the conversation along, "I was thinking maybe Maggie for a girl. Margaret Rose." Immediately she noticed Nathan's disposition change to an awkward avoidance betraying that he was obviously trying and struggling to choose the right words.
"Oh I see how it is! Anything you'd like to confess, Constable?" she asked playfully.
"Just a case of unrequited…like," he replied with a chuckle. 'Love' didn't feel right. Now that he knew love with Elizabeth, nothing in the past felt worthy of the word. Still, it wasn't a name he hoped to pass along to one of his children.
"Then I guess we won't add Faith to the list of potential names either," Elizabeth added with mock annoyance. Nathan laughed. The unexpected turn and lightness of this conversation had made for a morning full of laughter.
Nathan slowly took another sip of hot coffee. Setting it down, he reached across the table to take Elizabeth's hand.
"Someday, we're going to have to actually pick a name for this little one. And I know we'll come up with the perfect one," Nathan said, gazing in the blue eyes of his love.
"Someday. But apparently, not today," Elizabeth giggled. She squeezed his hand and then raised it to place a kiss on his fingers.
"I've never known a love like yours, Nathan Grant," she added sincerely.
"You know you can't say those kinds of things without a kiss, Mrs Grant," he said playfully.
"Oh really? Is that a rule?" Elizabeth played along coyly.
"It's our rule," he said, barely above a whisper.
Still holding her hand, he led her gently around the table to sit on his lap. She happily followed his lead, sealing her words with a passionate and loving kiss. Nathan wrapped an arm around her, pulling her closer still when they were both surprised with a sudden, sharp kick from their yet unnamed baby who had been feeling cramped in their cuddle.
"This little one is lucky to have you for a father," Elizabeth said, leaning her forehead against his.
Nathan tenderly rubbed his hand along her rounded belly, "I think I'm the lucky one."
