A/N I'm excited to share a fresh version of this story that I've been crafting for quite some time. I originally had planned to release it back in 2023-2024, but life got pretty hectic, and I couldn't find the right time. A good friend of mine encouraged me to experiment with writing in the third person, which is a completely new approach for me.I'm eager to see how this change will impact the story and if it resonates with readers.
Don't be too let down that this chapter has taken a different direction from the original. The good news is that this version offers a chance to see more heartwarming moments between the characters. So, while it may be totally different, there are still plenty of cute and fluffy scenes to look forward to!
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it, and I can't wait to hear your thoughts on this new perspective!
ENJOY!
CHAPTER ONE:
Our First and Last Kiss
Love.
Such a simple phrase of the word, but when it comes right down to it, there's actually a lot more to it than meets the eye. Making a person feel like they're floating on cloud nine one moment, and then bringing them crashing back down to reality the next. This emotional rollercoaster of sappiness can be really intense, showing how quickly feelings can shift.
She didn't understand what it meant until she wanted something more. It wasn't like she planned to fall in love, either. Except, no one can ever forget their first kiss, especially if it's with someone you never in a million years would have thought was at all possible. Zoe and Takuya have been best friends for a long while now; The love she had never imagined experiencing for herself came knocking into her heart. In one of those spur moments is where she ends up crossing that symbolic line.
Both met on the first day of freshman year entrance ceremony. It's where everything started and didn't quite end there. As fate intervened, they both ended up in the same classes all throughout middle school. Surprisingly, their friendship didn't blossom until the last semester of their second year in junior high.
For one thing, the fact that they were in the same grade and knew each other's names. Both of them hardly knew each other at all. If not for the occasional chance encounter in the busy, boisterous school hallways, they would have almost not talked to one another. In addition, serving as a polite form of acknowledgement, they would give each other a quick hello.
Only then by observing one and the other at a distance and hearing the rest of the students' idle banter about what was said about them. Neither of them thought they were remotely compatible.
In spite of that, things eventually change when both sides are credibly drawn into hanging out in the same social circle, bringing them closer together. However, a shared common interest merely in competitive soccer is what it did for them to become best of friends, and the two have been nothing but unbreakable like tightropes ever since.
Needless to say, the twosome pair ultimately knew everything they had to know about the other; there wasn't anything left to be made aware of which they wouldn't know by now. Well, at least it was how it was supposed to be, anyway.
Under the tiniest glimmer of fear that could ruin everything, there was one hidden secret that Zoe had always kept low-key from Takuya. It was her having a bit of a crush on the guy, but barely anyone was aware of it.
In Zoe's mind, she knew exactly where she stood in terms of their close relationship. Theoretically speaking, they could never be more or be much less, for several compelling reasons. Not to mention, she couldn't really bring herself to do anything about it, either. Then again, it has become difficult barring all the consuming tingling feeling of her heart that keeps on telling her a different story, when it beats uncontrollably each time she's together with him.
Truthfully, being around him every single day, she gradually became the happiest she's ever been up till now. And somehow, whenever he speaks to her about trivial things, without fail, she finds her eyes fixated dotingly onto him.
In such a way where it progresses dangerously further, crossing beyond friendship territory. Zoe loved him more than anything at this point.
Even so, she doesn't understand why there was such a sudden change. What makes one feel this strongly about someone unexpected, or maybe Zoe has felt this way since she first laid eyes on Takuya, and she nearly realized it just now? It's something that cannot simply be explained in a few sentences. One certainly does not know when they will fall in love.
Yet, Zoe remembers that day so vividly as if it was just yesterday.
Let's meet at our usual spot.
Reaching the highest floor, Zoe slowly made her way up towards the final set of steps within the door leading to the rooftop. Normally it would have been completely secured, especially if students weren't allowed to go on the school's rooftop. Therefore, preventing them from entering as a result, so hardly anyone tries to go up there without bothering to find a way to pry it open, thinking it'll be pointless. Those clueless amateurs stayed away, of course, apart from Zoe and Takuya because unlike they're schoolmates. Zoe and Takuya were the only ones who knew where the spare key was hidden.
Meaning they would occasionally sneak up there anyway to get away from everything else around them or spend their lunch breaks just the two of them, making it their private safe haven.
Without much effort, she pushed the steel door open. The moment Zoe went out, the sunlight illuminated the clear blue sky, and she instantly breathed in the scent of refreshing air. Pulling her hands further into the long sleeves of her white blouse shirt, which came with a dark red bow tie wrapped around her black sailor collar, it was surprisingly cooler than she deemed it would be.
Zoe regrets having left her comfy pale yellow cardigan sweater behind in her bedroom at home. She was in a rush this morning, especially when she overslept, forgetting to set her alarm like usual. It's a bad habit that needs fixing, and her obnoxious older brother Seki doesn't fail to keep reminding Zoe of it every chance he gets. Unfortunately, she obstinately refuses to accept the fact despite him being right.
Zoe then leaned forward safely over the ledge as she clenched onto the wire fence. While her other free hand held onto the small plastic bag, containing goody snacks from the convenience store that was nearby the school campus. Seeing as it was late hours, the cafeteria and the vending machines were closed.
Her bright jade doe eyes were eagerly glazing down below in the far distance. Zoe watched the treetops planted along the sidewalk rustling slightly in the wind, with just as few of the detached leaves leisurely swirling down onto the solid ground.
Whenever Zoe finds herself up on the roof, she would usually spot a swarm of middle schoolers gathering around the school courtyard, either hanging out whimsically with their group of friends, or consuming their lunch bento boxes. However, the school had been cleared out some time ago; it's to be expected being how summer break had just begun. Once the final bell echoed along in every floor hall, everyone immediately stood up from their wooden desk chairs with their belongings and enthusiastically rushed outside, allowing them to be as loud as they could be. The students couldn't wait to get out and enjoy their freedom by starting their summer fun early. Though the peaceful silence wasn't so bad, as Zoe thought, she enjoyed the empty scenery nonetheless.
Casually shifting her gaze over her shoulder. A small smile exceptionally found its way to Zoe's fine lips for the first time since she had stepped foot onto the rooftop as she stared up at the upper top of the entrance.
Takuya was already here, like she anticipated he would be. Without making him wait any longer, she approached the metal laddered staircase installed next to the doorway where she originally came from. Zoe could feel the material of the plastic bag next to the ends of her black pleated skirt sway in the light breeze as she climbed up onto the thin metal railing. Her untied silky light golden hair had also moved away from her rosy cheekbones and waived along with the chilly wind's trail.
Zoe found him sleeping peacefully, lying flat on his back onto the cold cement with an arm stretched behind his head. He was dressed in his usual standard black uniform, with just his gakuran jacket hanging wide open, revealing his white underneath button down collar shirt that was untucked, like always. He was supposedly making a fashion statement, when in reality Takuya gave up trying to wear the school attire correctly solely because he's too lazy to fix it himself. Such a rebellious act unfortunately results in him being constantly scolded by the school monitor at the gate every morning and earning himself disciplinary points. At any rate, it's not like Takuya cares since he knows very well how to recover from it by using undeniable flattery to let him go unpunished.
A small, silent giggle escapes her mouth once Zoe first notices Takuya's eyebrow twitching slightly as his bottom lip pushes forward, perhaps annoyed by the stubborn sunlight radiating on his light olive skin, although he still refuses to let it disrupt his nap. Zoe isn't particularly wondering what he was dreaming about. She was more immersed in his childish behavior, thinking to herself that it was undoubtedly cute.
She automatically lends him a hand by scooting closer, shielding the beaming sun view away from him, creating a body shade instead.
Zoe studied Takuya closely; his eyes remained shut under her shadow stretching across his face as his disheveled brown hair was faintly swept lightly away by the wind. And his soft breathing makes the world seem to stand still.
Experiencing such a rare sight like this, Zoe sometimes forgets not only is Takuya a type of guy that everyone simply adores. Due to his charming and friendly personality, were his often surrounded by a group of people wherever he is. But his irresistible, handsome-like appearance always amazes her to the point where it's overwhelming at times. It was then and there where she could see why Takuya was so popular. Apparently to a great degree for him when essentially everyone is desperately lining up after Takuya, longing to be noticed by him.
Zoe recognized this for a fact when she would repeatedly see from the corner of her eye at her fellow classmates subconsciously watching him from across the room, including her. They would witness Takuya's endearing quirk of sometimes brushing his fingers back through his messily style haircut whenever he heartily laughs and nods casually along with many of his cherished friends. Everything about Takuya just basically brightens up any room he's in, making it impossible not to look away from him.
Despite all of these things, Takuya never showed his defenseless side to anyone, especially out in public places, except only to her. In the end, it has always made her feel special to him because she fully understands she won't be able to continue knowing a part of him no one else knows about for very long.
At that moment, Zoe knew full well that she shouldn't have, but she had a sudden urge to touch him, even if it was a small fragment. Zoe had bent down next to Takuya. With a hint of nervousness, she extends out her slender fingertips just over his head and gently removes the single strand piece away from his stunning face that has previously blown and trickled down from the breeze earlier.
Zoe steadily leaned forward intuitively, closing the proximity. Her chest was pounding rapidly as their lips were only mere inches apart. She closed her eyes, his mellow breath was hot on her flushed face. Pausing in mid-motion, Zoe seemed to hesitate. Does she want to do this? She lowered herself painfully slowly, staring intensely at his pure, vulnerable lips, still not willingly sure about going through with it.
Unaware that Takuya's eyelids flickered open this time, revealing a striking shade of brown eyes and finding them staring into her face that hovered inches from his own.
Just now, Takuya couldn't help but be captivated by Zoe's familiar presence amidst the sun gleaming behind her. Regardless of both being strangely in close quarters, his first instinctively thought was "Damn, she's beyond beautiful."
Takuya's intrigued gaze deliberately met hers for a floating second before she let out a gasp and automatically stumbled backwards in utter shock, causing Zoe to lose her footing. Landing herself smack on the pavement with a loud thud.
Takuya, lagging behind in his reaction, had scrambled and shifted into a standing position after this unforeseen collision, letting the shivering sensation of the cold cement fade off his back, replacing with it the feel of the soft breeze passing by instead. Zoe, on the other hand, lay in despair on the ground. She hit regrettably hard, not being able to move a muscle even if she wanted to.
"Ow." Zoe muttered under her breath with a look of extreme discomfort plastered across her face. It was like the sweep of air had plunged right out of her lungs, followed by searing pain coming from the aftermath of the fatal fall.
Just when she clearly didn't anticipate that would happen, her whole perception was quickly switched over by getting goosebumps after hearing Takuya's attractive voice directed at her.
He held the nape of his neck with his hand as he looked down to the side at her. "Um...hey, are you alright?" His perfectly shaped eyebrows drew together in what looked like concern and confusion emitting from his eyes.
Takuya then stepped forward closely only to be merely discarded the next minute, when Zoe abruptly sprung up carelessly on her two feet with what little strength that she had summoned up. Before he had a chance to help her out, startling him quite a bit.
She nodded more than necessary. "Oh! Y-yeah...I'm totally fine." She stammered shortly at her words, still making sure she managed to say it in a bright and reassuring tone, but Zoe failed to hide her timid smile.
Now standing a few inches taller, Takuya couldn't tear his eyes away from his petite blonde friend as she gave him a hasty response. He silently laughs to himself in astonishment. It would have been more convincing if her eyes didn't intentionally waver, unable to make eye contact with his own by pretending to be busy dusting dirt off the side of her knee-length skirt. This immediately reminds Takuya of how Zoe terribly reacts every time in class when Ms. Yoshimura-sensei attempts to randomly call an unlucky student in order to solve a question on the board, which Zoe manages to steer clear of by simply looking anywhere except the sensei's line of vision.
Finally mustering up the courage to look properly in Takuya's direction again, even though part of her wanted to lower her head, ashamed for what Zoe was planning to do to her uncautious best friend earlier if Takuya hadn't woken up at the last second.
She swallowed anxiously, in the mobilized stillness where she stood, as she clenched the hem of her sleeve ever so slightly with nerves, but his level-headed posture seemed unfaltering.
They share one of those fleeting glimpses-the ones that you know only last for a brief instant but they can go on endlessly-The words leave her automatically when she sees his soft expression. His warm, mesmerizing brown eyes were such a contrast to her vibrant green eyes. Zoe will never erase the unforgettable image from her memory of Takuya's tender smile he gave her in that moment. The genuine smile said and meant more than words could describe it, making every fiber of her bones melt like honey.
An unreadable emotion unexpectedly flashed across Takuya's face, and before she could fully comprehend what he's doing, she was already caught up in his cozy embrace. Her body tensed at his gentle touch.
Takuya had taken the opportunity to grab hold ahead of time of her waist, as he practically pulled her down with him. Sitting her in position between his legs.
"Hey! What are you doing!? Let go!" Zoe, totally flustered, exclaimed while childishly kicking and flailing her arms out, desperately seeking to be released from his strong grip.
There was an immediate shaking of his head, "No way, it's freezing. Let me borrow some of your warmth." Takuya rebukes happily, after somewhat snuggling onto her neck as he remained to hold on to her like his life depended on it. Obviously aiming to coax Zoe into surrendering.
So many things were spiraling through her head at that exact moment. What would or could she do? Takuya hadn't given her any openings to run away from this loving torment he had placed on her; she was downright stuck. As he hugged her, the intoxicating scent of vanilla lavender lotion that Zoe always used on her pale skin made its way to his nose. It was exceptionally strong for him not to notice, it didn't bother him though, in fact he found it oddly pleasant for some reason.
At this point, Zoe's delicate face flared scarlet red, reaching to her ears. Failing to control her shyness from showing. Even if it's embarrassing to admit it out loud, hearing what Takuya just said made her feel also having him cling to her had left Zoe extremely happy about being Takuya's center of affection, either way, she had to snap out of this soon. Otherwise, he'll notice her heart racing more than normally intended, giving her away that she has a ridiculous crush on him. She certainly didn't want that to happen.
Zoe breathes deeply through her nose, trying to calm down her crazy heart, in the same breath refusing him by giving Takuya a stern side look that says,'Quit joking around and let go already'
Assuming her message successfully came across since Takuya loosened his grip but didn't fully pull away. Takuya lips jutted out into a small pout while he looked pleadingly at her to stay like this. Indeed, that was all it took for her heart to finally give in. Accepting utter defeat, she turned around, sighing as she naturally leaned backward, resting her back comfortably against his chest. His soft chuckle filled her burning ears, knowing well that she had been hopeless against him from the start.
"Did I make you wait long?" Zoe shyly asked, paying no mind to Takuya now that he had settled himself, resting peacefully on her shoulder. With his arms cozily wrapped around Zoe's stomach.
Whereas, she momentarily distracts herself by playing around with the rope string of Takuya's black braided infinity bracelet that she made for him by hand. It was her attempt to stay restrained from being this amiable close to Takuya. In any case, Zoe wore the exact same bracelet but in white, it was heartwarming that he hasn't taken it off since she first gave it to him, especially when Zoe was well aware that it wasn't something Takuya was into. Yet he still accepted it, meaning he really values their friendship. Of course, she came to strongly admire that.
Takuya gave a sidelong glance and a grin. "Nah," Zoe stayed silent, expecting him to continue, which he did. "I got here just a few minutes before you did," he says indifferently.
Zoe gives a faint smile and simply nods coherently. If she's being honest, she was bummed out that Takuya hadn't taken the time to wait for her this once. Especially, since it was always her who made sacrifices and stayed around for him whenever he needed her. She realized that her feelings were a bit selfish and unrealistic, wishing for him to change the usual pattern.
She breathed out a disheartened mumble of "I see." Her meek voice was almost incomprehensible for him to hear. Zoe's mood definitely took a noticeable nosedive, something that didn't reflect her feelings for him.
Once she recognized how absurd she was being, Zoe frolics about in a cheerful, exaggerated manner. "Oh. Here, I got you this," she promptly comments, trying to inject a lively tone into her voice this time.
Anything to change the topic as she steers the conversation away from the awkwardness she almost created.
Takuya removed his chin entirely away from her shoulder when she pulled something out of the plastic bag she's been carrying around and surprisingly handed him a yakult beverage right on the spot, after smiling widely at him as she opened her own.
Without hesitation, she takes her first much-awaited sip from her straw, beaming blissfully at the sweet taste of the strawberry flavor content. Normally Zoe would insist on how good and healthy the drink really is, looking amused at her even now, still showing it's her favorite drink.
Obviously, it's impossible for him to understand her preferences when it comes to these things. If it were him, his choice of beverage would have been a juice box or any sugary can of soda that's available. Very soon Takuya came to figure out they're total opposites. Even so, receiving something from a dear friend, there was no way he could possibly refuse nor complain. Takuya was just grateful she even thought of him in the first place.
Following closely, he noticed Zoe had suddenly decided to keep her eyes trained to the ground. Between sips, Zoe, sensing a strange tension at her side, peers over to the source. Only to find Takuya quietly watching her this entire time. She felt her face grow warmer as his eyes shone intently at her once more.
Blinked confusedly "What?" She naively asked, seemingly clueless as to why Zoe found him fascinated by her.
Just when she expected a curious response from him, Takuya playfully gives Zoe a small tap to the forehead, so he wouldn't have the urge to laugh teasingly at her for being unusually adorable.
"Ack. Hey! What was that for, you jerk?" She cries out, knitting her eyebrows sulkily at him. As her left hand automatically pressed the same area where Takuya briefly touched.
By choosing to ignore Zoe's previous comment for the most part. He purses his lips shut, refusing to say anything. Instead, Takuya randomly shrugged his broad shoulders, feigning innocence. Typical of him, leaving her mystified.
She then jolted her head backwards around, taken aback at the fact that Takuya chose this particular moment to precisely free her from the soothing closeness they shared. It was just as she was beginning to feel comfortable in his presence.
Before she knew it, he settled himself sitting right beside her, to the point where their shoulders were likably touching. All the same, it still radiated some sort of warmth in spite of the occasional gust of a cold shifting breeze, moving past their thin clothing.
His boyish smile surfaces "Geez, just be yourself, dummy." Takuya softly reminds her.
Zoe's heart thumps involuntarily again at his words. It was a weakness of hers, to say the least. Sure enough, Takuya must have noticed she has been a bit off since she arrived, little did he know that he was the main cause behind Zoe's sudden jitteriness.
Coming out of her temporary daze when Takuya leaned his shoulder further towards hers, giving a slight nudge to grab her full attention.
"Thanks,"Takuya says, easily popping the tiny straw onto the yakult bottle. Knowing him, he resisted the urge to cringe as he parted his lips to take a sip of it.
And so; Zoe was back to her normal state. She nods happily in return, seeming to finally let herself relax a little and becoming less stiff than before. Exactly like Takuya, she couldn't refrain from laying her head in the space between his neck and shoulder. Both of them drank in comfortable silence, reveling in each other's company. Zoe wasn't opposed to them staying like this whatsoever, without having anything to say to each other. Being like this together, just the two of them, where no one can interrupt them, was all she could ever really ask for.
If only time stayed still so that this moment could last forever. Sadly, not long after the glistering sun disappeared somewhere behind the bundle of fluffy white clouds that had drifted aimlessly in the faded gray sky, replacing the once-blue sky.
Moreover, as quickly as it had started, it was all over. Both of them felt the density of the moisture in the air weighing down on them and seeping through their school uniforms. The mood was unbelievably ruined when lenient raindrops began pouring down on the area of their surroundings.
"We should probably head back now." Takuya suggested on cue, having already risen himself from the ground.
To say she was disappointed would be a dramatic irony, but there was no helping it. Takuya extended his hand down for her, and Zoe didn't falter this time as she eagerly grabbed hold of him that he offered her and helped lift Zoe back up on her feet like it wasn't nothing.
Takuya's hand perfectly slid intertwined onto hers; the warm touch of his skin overwhelms her frigid hand. Rather than letting go, Zoe lets herself be cutely dragged along by him. Until they both reached the metal ladder, which lamentably wasn't far away.
Currently at the bottom of the roof ladder, Takuya patiently waited for Zoe; he looked elsewhere in the meantime, a considerate gesture so he wouldn't mistakenly see up her skirt as she climbed down.
Zoe zealously guides herself down the wet steps, being extra mindful of her footing. Out of nowhere, a strangled yelp escapes her, surprising even herself. Zoe fallibly misstepped one of the bar railings. Almost slipped if it wasn't for Takuya. With his conditional support, it made all the difference Zoe felt herself being hosted slightly right back to her previous position, restoring her balance.
Whew.
Her mind was so focused on what was happening around her that she forgot something as simple as breathing. Whatever the case, the pressure she had been feeling began to lift. Takuya's subtle grip reassured her, allowing her to exhale a sigh of relief.
She took a moment to collect her thoughts, it struck her that Takuya's fingers reflexively grazed a sensitive area of bare skin right below the bottom hem of Zoe's shirt, making her acutely aware of his presence.
Zoe didn't notice how her body should be reacting to the situation, and it made her feel a bit lightheaded.
Not long after Takuya's protective nature kicked in, he speaks out from behind her. "Izumi...Are you in pain? Can you move properly?" His fretful eyes immediately scans below her right leg, wanting to make sure she hadn't hurt herself again. The memory of Zoe's earlier accident weighed heavily on his mind, making him even more vigilant about her safety.
Witnessing such a pattern, Takuya is starting to believe luck isn't on Zoe's side, for he can't seem to leave her for even a millisecond.
Unlike Zoe, she wanted to mentally smack herself on the top of her head for unintentionally making her best friend worry. Not only that, because she also showed him her newly discovered flaw. Zoe knew for sure that Takuya's assumption of her changed to something far from her bubbly-lovable image into a total klutz, and now she could only hope he wouldn't tease her about it too much.
"Uh-huh," was Zoe's natural response, although her tone came out rather raspy. She added a reassuring nod, finally putting him at ease.
Although they undoubtedly found themselves standing in an uncomfortable position, in particular for Zoe, since she was hopelessly trying to ignore the static sensations pulsing through her anytime he spontaneously touches her when she least expects it.
Her nervousness quickly resurfaced, beginning to slowly engulf her as time passed. Zoe needed to do something about it, "Ahem," She paused to clear her throat, then called to him tentatively."Taku..."
Takuya's brown eyes darted questionably at the small back of her pretty blonde head; he assumed Zoe would look over her shoulder to face him, but she didn't. "Yeah?"
"Hand. You can let go now." Zoe pointed it out in an outwardly shy tone; her voice this time was somewhat strained from not being able to keep the heat from rushing into her ears once more; she mentally prayed that it wasn't noticeable.
"Eh?" Takuya blinked; silence ensued when a sheepish grin broke across his praiseworthy face for what she insinuated. "Oh...right. My bad." He drawls, instantly withdrawing his manly hands from her hips, realizing that he's been holding onto Zoe a little longer than he intended.
Takuya gave her some space; she peered down at the cement, and Zoe quietly jumped off at the last step. Without saying anything, Takuya evidently shook his head at her. And for no distinctive reason, both of them then found themselves laughing uncontrollably as they made eye contact.
He eventually raked his fingers through his partially damp hair, "Let's go," he finally conveyed, feeling a wave of contentment wash over him. Seeing Zoe so delightfully upbeat made everything feel right.
Zoe gladly trailed behind him as he extended the entrance door open for her to go first and descend down the staircase to the bottom floor.
The two diligently switched out of their white uwabaki slippers for their normal footwear and shoved them into their designated shoe cubby, placed centered in the entryway.
Zoe initially finished collecting her possessions early and took the time to look outside. The humidity hung in the air, creating a quiet heaviness as the rain continued to fall. What began as a light drizzle quickly ended up a full-blown storm. Zoe stood near the open front entrance, sighing remorsefully; If it weren't for her, they wouldn't be stuck in this weather. She should've taken Takuya's advice and left sooner like he suggested.
Zoe unthinkingly recalled that she needed to stay behind a bit longer to tidy away the leftover mess. The students who were supposedly assigned to be the clean up crew had already left. Among those who abandoned her were some of her friends. Even though Zoe was a bit annoyed, she decided to make the best of the situation. Zoe knew that by helping out now, they would owe her one in the future. It was a small price to pay for some friendship points, after all.
All Zoe had to do was put all the wooden chairs face down on top of the matching desks. She was lucky to motivate an exhausted Takuya to lend a hand, and together they got the job done in no time. The only inconvenience was that they didn't have anything to shield them from the extreme rainshower.
Despite the dreary weather, Zoe's mind was preoccupied as she continued to wait for Takuya. The dampness in the air made her shiver, and again, she wished she had brought a toasty snug jacket. Trying to fend off the cold, Zoe hugged her arms close to her body, hoping to trap some warmth. As she stood there, Zoe couldn't help but feel a little impatient. The rain kept falling rhythmically, and the wind continued whipping her hair around her shoulders and biting at her milky skin.
"Looks like the rain isn't going to be dying soon," Takuya chides back in when she sees him stepping beside her. The first thing she registered was Takuya taking this chance to swiftly slide out of his black blazer jacket and then, of course, naturally drape it over Zoe's shoulders. Catching her off guard in a new way.
Takuya's oversweet tendency to place her first above all else caused Zoe's cheeks to heat up for what seemed like the hundredth time. She wasn't able to conceal it from him this time around. However, knowing him, he probably interpreted Zoe's feverish cheeks simply due to the chilly weather.
Still, the nice gesture stirred her emotionally, seeing how absurdly he cared more about her well-being rather than his own at a time like this.
"Should we wait it out?" Takuya concluded, tediously shoving his hands back into the side pockets of his black, dress pants.
Though Zoe's sure Takuya must be freezing too, she becomes impressed by how he appears to handle the weather with ease, as if it doesn't bother him.
"Y'know if we do, we'll probably miss the last bus ride." Zoe merely counters, making a valid point.
Only after sliding her arms freely through the sleeves of his oversized jacket covering her like a blanket. There was a lingering trace of his pleasantly scented cologne on his Gakuran jacket, mingling with the fresh smell of rain. Because of this, Zoe negligently pays attention to whatever her best friend was planning on doing next.
"So then, let's borrow this for now." Takuya proposed mischievously while randomly holding a solid red umbrella that was leaning inside the empty rack holder.
Someone must have left it behind by chance or forgotten all about it. If Takuya hadn't noticed it, they would have had no choice but to make a run for it in the rain until they reached the bus terminal.
Zoe was hesitant at first, yet considering the circumstances, she ended up agreeing to his whim, and Takuya did assure her that he would return the borrowed umbrella back to its rightful owner just before summer break officially ends. He slowly raises the plain looking umbrella over their heads and begins walking along the sidewalk. Their synchronized footsteps echoed on the rain-soaked pavement, each splash resonating with the other. Every so often, their shoulders would lightly collide, highlighting the height variation between them.
Zoe rarely looks at him, appearing to be dwelling on something all over again. Takuya clutches his hold on the crooked handle of the umbrella, wondering what could be troubling her. Zoe may not want to talk about it, so he decided not to ask her. Instead, he focuses his attention on what's right in front of him. At least he doesn't see it, she's trying to find an intuitive way to bring up her question in a way that doesn't draw too much attention, even though it's been on her mind for a while.
While waiting for the light to change, a couple shared a tender moment, their hands clasped together. As Takuya and Zoe walked by, Zoe found herself wishing for a similar connection, feeling a twinge of envy at the sight of their affection.
On regular occasions, they would come across the streets teeming with a sea of people heading in all sorts of directions, each at their own speed, trying to reach their destinations. Having said that, on this particular Friday afternoon, the scene was quite different; the streets were deserted with hardly anyone around at this late hour.
Aside from the occasional car passing by here and there. It seemed that everyone had already gone home after a long day at work or school. And those who were randomly spotted were hurriedly sprinting to find shelter away from the bothersome downpour.
Within minutes, both had stepped underneath the protective awning of the bus stop. Rather than joining Zoe on the vacant bench. Takuya chose to stand next to Zoe's seat and leaned his back against the tempered glass panel behind them. Together, they waited patiently for the last bus to arrive soon.
The atmosphere between them shifts, Zoe twiddling her thumbs restlessly, she casting a tempting glance at Takuya. It was noticeable that she was seeking to engage him in some way.
Takuya was struggling to rinse out his wringing-wet clothing by excessively twisting the edge of his see-through collar shirt. The wet material clung uncomfortably to his chest and abdomen.
During their earlier silent stroll, Takuya acted heroically by saving Zoe from another near-miss disaster. When a fast-moving car sped past them, splattering water everywhere. On instinct Zoe closes her eyes shut to brace herself for what's about to occur next, Takuya habitually yanks her back from the edge of the sidewalk curb. What could have been a sentimental cinematic moment turned out quite differently, while Zoe's gallant knight in shining armor shields her with his masculine frame, Takuya ended up being the only one who got soaked, leaving Zoe completely dry and unscathed.
The confusion of it all, their faces were so close that a kiss seemed inevitable. Her heart raced wildly, almost to the point of discomfort. She was convinced that he was about to lean in to kiss her. Deep down, she realized just how much she wanted him to take that step.
Yet, Takuya being oblivious to the tension, foolishly turned away to vent his frustration at the reckless driver, breaking the spell. And ruining the opportunity entirely. Just like that, the chance for that special kiss vanished in an instant.
Slowly undoing the buttons of his shirt down to his torso, giving a sneak peek of what was underneath. The sight of his Calvin Klein underwear logo became more visible, adding a touch of style to his look.
Takuya's soggy bangs tumble over his memorizing eyes, however he quickly swipes them away. Right then, a sudden iciness runs down his spine. Not just from the cold air, but also because he senses Zoe staring right at him. This realization leaves him oddly exhilarated by the attention of his best friend.
Takuya's eyes sparkled with mischief as he got closer to Zoe, aligning their gazes fitly. This made it impossible for her to look away from him even if she tried. Takuya wittingly challenged Zoe "So, when are you going to take that picture? Or are you planning to burn the image of me inside your memory?" His words carried a lighthearted tone, inviting a playful response.
Knowing well what he meant, Zoe coughed lightly to hide her surprise "Eh? What are you talking about?" She asked innocently, trying to mask her embarrassment from being caught red-handed.
Takuya pointed out the obvious, saying,"You're staring at me without a break." He had no intention of letting her off the hook. Takuya plans to take full advantage of this chance, watching her every response with keen interest.
Zoe shifted uneasily in her seat, leaning back a bit more. "Did I really? I assumed you'd have gotten used to the attention by now, considering how all the girls in our district seem to be constantly checking you out," Zoe expressed candidly.
Takuya's mouth twitched into a grin, she's making it increasingly challenging for him to stifle his chuckles. Over the years of knowing Zoe, he realized she had never once brought up his looks. While it was common for others to tell him he was exceptionally attractive, Zoe never joined in on that praise. This left him pondering her perspective, as he was curious to know if she ever thought of him in that way.
Zoe could see the sparkle in his eyes, and it made her want to smile along with him. Yet, she chose to suppress that impulse. She believed that if she responded the way he wanted, it would mean she gave him the upper hand.
Takuya's curiosity piqued "Hold on, are you suggesting that I'm attractive enough for my best friend to take notice?" he pressed, his voice laced with a hint of flirtation.
He enjoyed this back-and-forth, the way their conversation flowed effortlessly, filled with teasing and laughter. "Well, if that's the case," he added with a wink, "I might just have to step up my game to keep your attention."
She detected his sarcasm and shook her head. "Oh please, as if," she retorted, her tone light and playful. To emphasize her point, she stuck her tongue out at him, mimicking a child who was trying to be silly. It was a gesture that showed she was not taking his comments too seriously, and it added a fun twist to their conversation.
Takuya sighed with amusement laced in his tone "Aw looks like someone is getting shy, is perfectly fine if you are. I'm honestly flattered, regardless."
"Ugh, seriously," Zoe exclaimed, her voice tinged with exasperation. "Can you just button up already?" She couldn't understand why he would choose to go without a shirt in such a casual setting. It was a simple request, however it felt like a challenge to her patience.
With a gentle push, she moved him away from her face. She craved a bit of distance from Takuya, anxious that the longer he lingered near her, the more tempted she would be to jump at him in response to his playful teasing. She poured all her energy into calming the storm that raged within her chest.
He resorts to his typical pouty face. Zoe rolled her eyes dramatically. He had to go there. She's learned her lesson and won't be fooled anymore.
He glanced back at her, only to notice her looking at him. She looked away, her cheeks flaming. She looked embarrassed, he noted.
The experience was a blast while it lasted, and Takuya felt completely satisfied knowing that Zoe finds him irresistible. He had never really paid much attention to his looks in the past, so he was really pleased to realize that he had inherited good genes from his parents.
To pass the time, Takuya had pulled out his phone. When he unlocked the device, he noticed a flurry of 20 text messages that he had left unread until now. Takuya chuckles outright as he strolling through the ridiculous accusations and jealousy jabs his friends were posting on his chat. They were distinctly disappointed that he had ditched them early. But what really irked them the most was Takuya's decision to stay behind and spend quality time with the remarkable Zoe instead of hitting up the game arcade along with them.
The recognizable sound of the bus engine approached. He swiftly stowed his phone in his side pockets, prompting Takuya to quickly grab his backpack from the ground.
When the door creaked open, Zoe stepped inside and presented her bus pass to the driver. Shortly after, Takuya followed suit, doing the same. Zoe and Takuya exchanged glances, taking in their surroundings. The bus was neither empty nor overcrowded, striking a balance that made it comfortable for everyone. There were just enough people to create a lively ambiance. After a brief moment of consideration, they both decided to settle into seats at the back of the bus, where they could enjoy a bit more privacy and a clearer view out the window.
Zoe reached into her bag and pulled out a pair of white AirPods, carefully removing one from the case. She offered it to Takuya, who eagerly took it from her hand. The moment he put it in his ear, a look of excitement lit up his face, showing just how much he appreciated the gesture.
As the music began to play, Takuya's smile grew even wider than before. He instantly recognized the song that filled his ears, and it brought back a flood of memories. It was one of his all-time favorite tracks, a song that always seemed to lift his spirits and make him feel good.
Zoe had clearly put thought into her choice, knowing how much Takuya loved that particular song. Sharing this moment together, with the music connecting them, made it even more special. It was a simple yet meaningful experience that highlighted their friendship and the joy of enjoying music together.
The scenery was captivating, and before you knew it, they were nearing their destination much sooner than anticipated.
By the time they approached Zoe's stop, Takuya got off the bus alongside her. Takuya intended to simply escort Zoe to her front door acting like the true gentleman he is, and then carry on with his day.
Takuya couldn't wait to ditch his uncomfortable school uniform and relax under a hot bath once he returned to his home, which was located just a few blocks down the same street.
He's just crossing his fingers that his parents remembered to pay the electric bill. If they haven't, he's going to be in a bind and is almost guaranteed to get sick with a nasty cold. Being ill in bed is the last thing he wants. It would not only disrupt his summer plans but also be quite annoying to manage.
However, Zoe paused him before Takuya could say his goodbye.
Or to be more accurate, she practically shook her head and tugged on his long sleeve, it was as if she was trying to anchor herself, emphasizing the weight of her disagreement with his departure."Absolutely not!"
His brow furrowed slightly as he studied her features, trying to decipher the emotions that played across her face.
Zoe watched him, trembling and downcast, as he bore an uncanny resemblance to a pitiful likeness of a wet puppy that needed comfort.
"Come on inside." she insisted, gesturing towards the giant red door. "I can lend you some dry clothes before you go."
He responded with a thoughtful nod, saying, "Ok then, thank you for having me over." His tone suggested a willingness to accept her offer, even if it wasn't his first choice.
As he stepped inside without a hint of hesitation, he could feel the warmth of her home enveloping him, a stark contrast to the hypothermic weather outside.
Zoe vaguely mentioned something about her parents visiting her grandma's house, indicating that they wouldn't be returning home until later in the night. In addition to her parents being away, Zoe's brother was sleeping over at a friend's house. This meant that the house would be quiet for a while, giving her some time to herself.
Zoe moved to her brother's room closet, rummaging through it to find something that would fit Takuya. They were nearly the same size, so she hoped to find a good match.
While Takuya took a moment to warm up from under the kotatsu table that was set up in the center of Zoe's bedroom, she had left him unattended. Believe it or not, this was Takuya's first glimpse into her personal space. Instead of the overly feminine decor he had imagined, which was a pleasant surprise.
The room was decorated in a way that felt comfortable with a few personal touches that hinted at Zoe's interests. Takuya noticed the books neatly arranged on the shelf, a couple of plants adding a touch of life, and photo collages plastered around the mirror's edges that showcased her creativity. In fact, her room was much tidier and more organized than his own. This observation led him to wonder why Zoe always preferred to hang out at his place rather than inviting him over to hers. It seemed odd, especially considering how neat and inviting her room was.
"I have a few options that should work for you," she said, her tone was sprightly as she held up a couple of shirts for him to choose one and a pair of pants.
Takuya glanced at his reflection in the bathroom mirror and flinched a bit in a twinge of discomfort. He felt relieved that Zoe hadn't noticed the nasty bruise on his back. As he examined the purple mark. It was a reminder of an incident he would rather forget. He felt fortunate that Zoe was so focused on other things, as her admiration for his physique helped him conceal the signs of his accident. There was no way he could have explained how he got that mark without revealing too much.
For the first time ever, he found himself deliberately choosing to keep a secret from Zoe. This decision was not made lightly; he weighed the consequences and the potential impact on their friendship. The thought of hiding something from her felt strange, as he valued their trust and connection deeply.
Takuya feels hesitant about revealing anything personal to her so soon. He understands the importance of being open, but Takuya just isn't in the right headspace to do so. When the time comes, he will make it his priority to tell her immediately, ensuring she knows what he has been holding back.
Once he was dressed, he stepped back into the room, ready to chat a little more before heading out.
The rain continued to patter against the windows. Takuya was munching on a colorful bite size macaron cookie that Zoe had taken from the kitchen cabinet. Although she considered offering him a cup of ramen, he preferred to stick with a simple snack since he planned to have dinner at home later.
Zoe absently drew her legs close to her body, creating a cozy little ball of comfort. Her head and arms normally lean on top of her knees for support.
"Hey." Zoe lets her voice trail off, breaking the silence between them.
Takuya tilts his head to the side "Hm?" surrendering all his attention back to Zoe, his eyes flutter towards her face, attentively waiting what she had to say to him.
"So...has Uemko-senpai invited you out to the Hanabi Festival?" she asks, trying to push back against the jealousy when she understood she had no justification for it.
Zoe slowly catches the soft expression on Takuya's face automatically disappearing.
Stunned, she realized that the inexplicable words had slipped out of her mouth without her consent and before she could stop them. She's even baffled at herself by how much that bothered her when Zoe said it out loud.
Sure, the question came out of nowhere, but she felt compelled to bring it up. Zoe was acutely aware that Uemko had developed feelings for Takuya the moment he rushed in to carry her to the nurse's office in a bridal hold. This happened after she sprained her ankle while trying to dodge a volleyball that nearly splat her straight in the face, an incident that was partly Takuya's fault.
Instead of letting someone else take the blame, Takuya's guilty conscience didn't allow him to and decided to take responsibility for what happened.
It was clear that Uemko admired Takuya's willingness to step up and take charge, even when it wasn't exactly entirely his fault. This act of kindness and responsibility only deepened Uemko's feelings, clinging to him like a persistent leech that wouldn't let go. Making Zoe more aware of the dynamics between the three of them and this knowledge weighed heavily on her.
In order to address the unspoken feelings that had been building up, she hoped that by asking, she could help clarify the situation for everyone involved. Besides, Takuya appears to understand exactly what she's talking about.
Takuya expresses his fascination to Zoe with another eyebrow raise "Did Tomoki tell you that?" He snorted jokingly, trying to conceal any hint of annoyance, which, for the most part, he wasn't. In truth, Zoe had grown accustomed to witnessing Takuya being approached by multiple girls, and had never really cared before. Which is why he finds it refreshing that Zoe showed a newfound interest in his romantic life, despite the fact that it was unfamiliar to him.
She wasn't that obvious, was she? Has her facade really crumbled that easily? Even if Zoe were, it wouldn't make a difference. The thought crossed her mind that Takuya must've been really focused on her, perhaps even more than she realized.
She didn't feel the need to hide it from Takuya because he can read her like an open book. So, Zoe decided to spare herself the hassle of lying and simply tell the truth. Takuya, after all, already knew the answer to his question even before Zoe could confirm it herself.
"Well, he might have..." Zoe refuted relaxedly as she could, suggesting that Tomoki may have brought up the topic before, and then inquired further "So does that mean you're going then?"
This ultimately explains why Zoe appeared so unfocused when she was spending time with Takuya. During study break, Tomoki sat next to Zoe, and her attention was elsewhere. Zoe was staring out the window, completely absorbed in watching Takuya, who was in the middle of his P.E. class outside the field track. The interaction between Takuya and Uemko was more than just casual; it was that moment that would soon reveal important information to Zoe.
Takuya didn't say anything right away and the longer it took for him to answer. She'd already made up her mind that she wasn't going to get one out of him. Whatever the case, Zoe couldn't shake the unsettling feeling of not knowing whether or not Takuya had accepted Uemko's not so subtle invitation. The uncertainty continues to gnaw at her, refusing to dissipate. Perhaps bringing it up in the first place was a mistake.
Enjoying Zoe's company was great and leaving the playfulness side, her fidgeting was becoming increasingly hard to ignore. Takuya meant to tease her in a laid-back way, not knowing that his answer would hold a lot of weight for her.
A poker faced Takuya rose from the carpet floor, he took a moment to stretch his arms high above his head, feeling the tension in his muscles ease as he did so. After a satisfying stretch, he made his way over to Zoe's bed, where he flopped down comfortably, sinking into the soft pillows and blankets.
You'd think this would irritate her. Zoe has a strict no-one-on-the-bed policy, even for her brother. Still, when she spots Takuya relaxing on her bed, her heart practically leaps with happiness. It's definitely a contradiction, but she's completely unbothered by it.
Takuya exhaled calmly, his expression mellowed as he continued the conversation, "Aah, maybe, if I feel like it." he mused, his voice calm and unpretentious.
He then turned the conversation back to his companion, without any hidden subtext. "What about you? Have you had anyone express interest in you, or have you taken the bold step of asking someone out on your own?" His tone was direct and sincere, leaving no room for misinterpretation.
When she hears her own question reflected back to her, a rush of shock and shame washes over her. It was a scenario she could've predicted, it still caught her off guard, rendering her briefly unable to respond right away.
Speaking up had seemed like a good idea at the time, but now she was second-guessing herself. The decision to voice her thoughts felt heavy, and she wished she could take it back. She felt trapped in a web of her own making, where honesty seemed like a dangerous path to take. The truth was heavy and complicated, and she feared that sharing it would only lead to more pain and confusion. So, instead of facing the reality of the situation, she chose to hide behind a facade, convincing herself that it was for the best.
"No, it's really not important. I've chosen not to attend," she admittedly acknowledged. It was as if she was trying to convince herself as much as she was trying to reassure him. The weight of her choice hung in the air, and she could sense the disappointment in the room, which only added to her unease.
Takuya stares at her, waiting for her to elaborate.
"Why not? I'm going to miss you if you don't go," he remarked instinctively, blending a touch of sarcasm with genuine sincerity that made his words feel more impactful. Takuya's smile was soft and inviting, while Zoe found her cheeks burning in response.
Zoe couldn't help but appreciate the way Takuya's words struck a chord within her, made her feel seen and valued. It was as if his lightheartedness had the power to lift the weight of her unspoken struggles, if only for a moment.
She felt a connection that transcended their usual banter, leaving her both flattered and hopeful. In fact she had been at least a little relieved of the depression he hadn't been able to fathom.
"Yeah..well at least Uemko- senpai is going to be there." She reiterated, trying to avoid thinking too much about what he told her. It was a small reassurance, but it was enough to keep her from spiraling into overthinking.
Takuya nodded reluctantly "Right." He stole a quick look at her, as if he was trying to memorize every detail of her expression. Then placed a hand on the back of his neck, allowing a small smirk quirked up at one side of his mouth.
Zoe bit the inside of her cheek. Zoe wondered if her feelings were too apparent. No keep your composure, Zoe told herself. Don't let it show; Takuya clearly has no idea what's going on.
He clears his throat "But you know...that's besides the point if you're not going I guess there's no reason for me going either then." he looked away awkwardly. Attempting to make the whole thing seem free-minded.
Whenever she tries to remove the smile from her face, it stubbornly returns. From his tone, Takuya knew even she didn't believe those words. But Zoe appreciated Takuya trying to encourage her all the same.
With a playful swing, she smacked her crush with her pillow. Takuya jolted almost immediately of the sudden impact in disbelief. Zoe fought against it for so long. She couldn't resist any longer. Realizing that he might seek revenge, she quickly jumped to her feet, bracing herself for whatever came next.
Takuya switches into a sitting position, "If that's how you want to play, then come over here." he snickers at her, urging her to take the bait.
"No, thank you. I'd rather remain right here." Zoe brazenly retaliates, moving further out of his grasp.
The atmosphere thickened with anticipation as Takuya was on the move. She sensed him closing in, his presence intensifying with each passing moment.
"Eek!"
After an exciting chase around the room, Takuya finally managed to catch up with Zoe, who was giggling and trying her best to evade him. With a sudden burst of energy, he scooped her up as if she were as light as a feather, showcasing his impressive strength and agility. Their laughter echoed throughout the space, creating a joyful atmosphere as they both relished this playful moment, making it a cherished memory for them.
Once Takuya had Zoe securely in his arms, he carefully set her down back on the bed, making sure she landed softly. The playful vibe remained strong as he couldn't resist the urge to tickle her sides, causing her to erupt into fits of laughter.
Their playful antics created a warm and cheerful environment, where both of them could forget about their worries for a while. Takuya's playful spirit and Zoe's infectious laughter made the room feel alive, turning an ordinary day into a delightful memory.
Takuya remarked, "You brought this on yourself." Meanwhile, Zoe fought hopelessly to break free from his hold, putting in all her effort. But it was a tough battle.
"Haha..A-alright, you got me. I-I apologize." Zoe, panting, finally reached a conclusion in the end.
Takuya's gaze softened, he hoped she could see herself through his eyes. He meticulously tucked away a stray strand of Zoe's hair behind her ear. This simple gesture not only revealed her lovely features more clearly it also reveals a lot about his character; it's not just an apathetic action but a reflection of his earnest affection for her. The way Takuya does shows that he pays attention to every single little detail, which makes it all the more special.
He moved in a little closer, his voice dropping to a sympathetic whisper as he shared his thoughts. "I know you might find me attractive," he laid bare, his eyes locking onto hers with sincerity. "But honestly, it's you who deserves all the admiration."
Zoe's feelings began to erupt, and she realized she was losing control over her emotions for him. He began to pull away, but before he could get too far, she grabbed the back of his neck, keeping him close as she fought to maintain her composure.
In a moment of urgency, she pressed her lips against his, acting before her mind could convince her otherwise. The instant their mouths met, she felt a rush of simulation, and she was grateful she took that leap because this kiss was unlike any she had ever experienced.
Takuya's body distinctly became stiff, and his thoughts went silent. Even though the damage has already been done, he did something Zoe did not expect—he kissed her right back. What began as a sweet, innocent peck on the lips soon intensified into a more passionate wanting kiss.
Every kiss they shared, he would draw her in tighter, and she felt an appealing itch to glide her hands along the contours of his neck, lost in the intimacy of their embrace. However, the growing awareness that she needed to take a breath began to intrude upon the blissful haze they were in.
Takuya slowly drew back, then straightway leaned his forehead very willingly against hers, breathing heavily. The soft sound of their oxygen levels intertwined filled the silence in the room.
He seemed to snap out of his daze when the ringing of the cell phone blared sharply startled him as if a switch had been flipped in his mind. Takuya remembered why he had set the alarm in the first place, and the realization hit him hard.
He knew he had to rush back home to avoid facing another round of his mother's disappointment for not arriving on time. Takuya could almost hear his mother's voice in his head, reminding him of the importance of punctuality.
They both descended down the staircase to the inviting space of the living room, Zoe halted at the entrance, her fingers resting on the doorknob, while Takuya crossed the threshold and then turned to face her.
After several attempts of saying something, Zoe's shoulders drooped. The awkwardness hung heavily between them. Even the simplest exchange of words seemed far beyond their reach, making it feel like a monumental task to look each other in the eye.
"I suppose I will be seeing you at the festival, won't I?" Takuya initiated the conversation, extending an invitation to her. He had a knack for breaking the ice with a friendly tone.
It felt like the perfect opportunity for them to create lasting memories together, and he couldn't wait to share the excitement of the festival with her. The thought of sharing the experience made her heart race a little faster.
"Are you inviting me to join you?" Zoe asked. She wanted to make sure she understood his intentions correctly. The idea of joining him at the festival filled her with a sense of joy, and she hoped he truly wanted her to be part of the experience.
"Absolutely," Takuya answered without hesitation, his enthusiasm evident. pleased that she was interested in joining him for the festivities.
"Sounds good!" Zoe proclaimed, her features morphing into a beaming smile that was contagious, spreading to the space around her and lifting spirits.
At one point the rain had subsided, Takuya bid his farewell to Zoe before making his way down the path. She remained rooted where she was, her eyes tracing his silhouette until he was no longer visible. A peculiar feeling of unease settled in heart while she watched him go. Almost as if this could be the last time they would see each other.
Despite her initial worries, later that night Takuya took the time to send her a text, wishing her sweet dreams. He added an adorably silly sleepy emoji to make it even cuter. She found comfort in his message, realizing that there was no real reason to feel concern. It was likely just her imagination running wild.
She traced her fingers over her lips, remembering the epic kiss she shared with Takuya. The memory replayed in her mind throughout the night, keeping her awake and restless. It was hard for her to accept that he had kissed her back, and she wondered if that indicated he might have feelings for her too.
The thought of it being mutual filled her with incredible hope. If that were the case, could it mean she actually had a shot at asking him to be her boyfriend? The idea made her heart race, and she couldn't help but smile at the possibility.
Zoe decided to hold off on asking him out until the Hanabi festival. If everything goes smoothly, they might become a couple by the time summer break wraps up. Kind of romantic don'tcha agree?
In what felt like no time at all, the moment we had been counting down to finally came. The Hanabi festival was in full effect with excitement, showcasing an array of mouthwatering food vendors and entertaining activities at every turn. Making it a perfect day for celebration.
Zoe had put a lot of effort into her outfit, her mother had played a big role in helping her prepare for the special occasion. She looked stunning in an eye-catching red floral kimono, the intricate patterns of flowers added a touch of elegance to her attire, while her hair was styled in an adorable updo that perfectly coordinated her accessories. This thoughtful combination showcased her sense of style and made her look even more radiant.
Zoe ran into some classmates who greeted her warmly and offered her compliments. They even extended an invitation for her to hang out with them, but she politely declined because she was waiting for Takuya.
She kept glancing at her phone screen, hoping for a call or a text, but there was no sign of him. Each time she checked, her excitement turned to disappointment as there was still no sign of him reaching out.
He may have just let it slip his mind or something unexpected happened that prevented him from showing up like he had promised. This situation doesn't imply that he wasn't interested in her or that he rejected her in any way, right?
If that's the case, then why does Zoe seem so heartbroken like she's on the verge of crying any second now?
On that day, everything around her seemed to dissolve into silence. She couldn't quite remember how she made it back home, but the memory of the incredible fireworks show was still fresh in her mind.
The fireworks had painted the night sky with an array of vibrant hues and sparkling lights, leaving her completely mesmerized. Each explosion of color was more breathtaking than the last, and she found herself lost in the beauty of it all. Yet, despite the wonder of the show, a lingering thought nagged at her; it would have been so much more special if Takuya had been by her side to witness it together.
