Chapter 1 Decisions, decisions
I waited for Beetee in the car. He was still inside, talking to the boy—explaining the plan to destroy the arena. This would be our third attempt.
"You look nervous, Plutarch," Lucius said.
"Aren't you? How many failures need to happen before surrender becomes the only option?"
"It's not in our nature to surrender. It goes against our instincts. Look—here comes your emissary."
Beetee climbed into the car.
"We don't have much time before someone notices your absence. Has the boy agreed?" I asked.
Beetee nodded.
"Is he aware of the consequences?"
Beetee hesitated for a moment before answering. "He's willing to die if necessary."
"What if he survives? Is he aware of that possibility too?" Lucius asked.
"Snow's not going to let him live," I said flatly.
Lucius gave me a condescending smile. "Experience has shown us that Snow can't control everything. The possibility exists."
"For his sake, I hope he succeeds—or dies trying," I muttered, irritation rising in my voice.
"Wiress told me he has a younger brother. And a mother," Beetee said quietly.
"A girlfriend too," I added. "The reason he is here in the first place."
Lucius looked out the window, lost in thought. "Maybe you're right, Plutarch. It would be a shame if the boy lived." He paused again "what about your boy Beetee?"
Beetee, eyes glistening, nodded. "He knows the role he has to play."
"Then there's nothing left to say," Lucius said coldly. "It's time to put the plan into action."
Beetee returned to the building. Lucius and I drove off in silence for a while.
"Why do you insist on this path, if Haymitch already understands the consequences?" I asked.
Lucius stared out the window again.
"Have you ever wondered why we let the lights drown out the stars?"
"Comfort. Fear of the dark. Or maybe just plain ignorance," I replied.
He smirked, like he already knew the answer.
"If Haymitch truly understood what he's risking, I'm not so sure he'd be so quick to agree."
"There's nothing we can do for them anyway."
Lucius didn't reply right away.
Then, softly: "What if... we could just see the stars again? Maybe everything would be brighter."
