Chapter Two: A House of Gold Eyes
Katherine didn't expect the Denali house to be… this. It was sleek and modern, yet warm with its tall cedar beams and walls of glass that welcomed in the endless white horizon. The place radiated calm, but underneath it was something else—something ancient. She could feel it in her bones.
"Nice place," she muttered, brushing broken glass from her jeans as she stepped into the foyer. Her heels clicked on the polished wood, though her steps faltered when all four golden-eyed immortals turned to look at her.
Carmen was the first to greet her fully. "Welcome," she said with a soft smile. "I'm Carmen, and this is Eleazar. You've already met Tanya, and that's Irina."
Irina barely nodded from where she leaned against the banister, arms crossed. Her gaze was cool, assessing. Katherine didn't blame her.
"I'm Katherine….Katherine Pierce", she said, shrugging off her jacket. "Thanks for the hospitality. I promise I don't usually crash my car but the whiskey was extra….potent".
Eleazar chuckled lightly. "You're not in Vegas anymore".
Katherine smiled. And then she rubbed the back of her neck. "So where's the lecture about drunk driving and moral depravity?"
Tanya arched a brow. "We don't judge. At least not out loud."
Katherine smirked, but it was Carmen's next words that shattered her thin layer of nonchalance.
"You're not fully human," Carmen said, not accusing—just observant. Certain. "I can feel it. The heartbeat is there, but it's wrong. Your scent is… complex."
Katherine froze mid-step. The air in the room seemed to thin.
"Excuse me?"
"You're not like any human I've ever met," Carmen continued, voice gentle. "And not like any vampire, either. You're something in between."
The silence that followed made Katherine's skin prickle. Her instinct screamed to run—to disappear before someone decided she was an abomination worth putting down.
She backed toward the door. "Okay, that's my cue to leave—"
"No." Tanya was suddenly in front of her, hands up but nonthreatening. "You're safe here, Katherine. We don't harm guests. Not even the strange ones."
Katherine narrowed her eyes. "You think I'm strange?"
"I think you're something I've never seen before." Tanya tilted her head. "And that makes you fascinating."
"Well, I know you're all vampires. That would technically make you more strange", Katherine admitted.
They all stared at Katherine, not fully shocked at her admission.
Katherine studied Tanya for a moment longer before exhaling. "Fine. You want answers? You'll get them."
She leaned against the edge of the stone hearth, crossing her arms tightly over her chest.
"I'm a hybrid," she said finally. "My mother was human. My father was a vampire. I'm 154 years old, give or take a decade or two." Her lips twisted in a bitter smile. "Surprise."
The room went deathly quiet.
Irina straightened, brow furrowed. "We've heard of them—vampire hybrids. But we've never met one. They're supposed to be rare."
"Guess I'm a collector's item," Katherine said dryly. "Lucky you."
Eleazar looked intrigued. "You have a heartbeat, but you're healing. Rapidly. Those wounds should've killed you."
"Yeah. Comes in handy when I drive into snowbanks."
Tanya stepped closer. "Do you feed on blood?"
Katherine's grin was all teeth. "Among other things."
That earned her a laugh from Carmen and a look of concern from Irina.
Tanya remained steady. "You don't have to explain everything. But we'd like to understand. You're not alone here."
For the first time in a long time, Katherine didn't know how to respond. Her walls wavered, just slightly.
"Where's your wine cellar?" she asked instead.
Eleazar smiled. "We have something better. Come."
As the group moved further into the house, a pair of distant footsteps crunched through the snow outside. Two familiar scents on the wind—new players entering the game.
Rosalie and Kate were approaching the house.
