Chapter Three: The Spark Between
Katherine sat curled in a plush armchair near the roaring fire, the warmth licking at her skin in a way she didn't actually need—but liked. In one hand, she held a crystal glass filled with deep crimson liquid. She swirled it lazily, watching it catch the firelight before taking a sip.
She smirked. "This is some of the best tasting "wine" I've ever had."
"You're recovering," Carmen said kindly from across the room. "It'll help. And we don't judge what our guests consume—blood or otherwise."
Katherine shot her a wink. "You really shouldn't encourage me".
Before Carmen could answer, the front door creaked open. Snow gusted in on the heels of two figures stepping into the house. One was radiant in a sleek fur-lined coat, blonde hair falling in polished waves. The other—taller, also blonde—was all confidence wrapped in leather and walking with long, purposeful strides.
Carmen stood. "Rosalie, Kate—this is Katherine Pierce. She's… staying with us for a bit. Katherine, this is Rosalie Hale and Kate Denali".
Katherine stood slowly, glass in hand. Her eyes flicked from Rosalie to Kate, and something primal tugged at her chest.
The moment their gazes met, the air thickened.
Kate's lips parted slightly, a small hitch in her breath that no one else might have noticed—but Katherine did.
Rosalie's golden eyes narrowed with interest, the smallest shift of her posture betraying something deeper. Calculating. Curious.
Katherine blinked, something buzzing beneath her skin, something electric and strange. She masked it with a crooked smile. "Pleasure," she drawled. "Nice to meet you both." She was immediately taken aback by how gorgeous the two were. They were clearly a couple but Katherine couldn't help ogling them both.
Kate smiled at Katherine. "Very nice to meet you as well".
Rosalie, ever cool, merely lifted a brow. "You don't look like you crash many cars often."
"I don't," Katherine said with a wink. "Just when I'm bored."
The tension was growing now. Carmen noticed and exchanged a perplexed glance with Tanya, but neither said a word. The rest of the evening passed in a comfortable rhythm. They gathered in the living room, Katherine lounging with her drink while the Denalis talked—about Alaska, about politics, and many other topics. They also had many questions for Katherine, since she was a rare hybrid.
Kate and Rosalie stayed close. Not obvious, but present. A hand brushing Katherine's shoulder when passing. Rosalie meeting her gaze with a smirk that said I see you. Kate asking her small, personal questions and listening—really listening—to the answers.
By the time Carmen insisted Katherine rest and heal, the hybrid was barely keeping her eyes open. She was not like the other vampires, she did sleep and she really needed it after today. The day had been long, brutal, yet oddly comforting.
"You'll stay the night," Carmen said firmly. "Your body is still mending, even if you won't admit it."
Katherine didn't argue. She was given a guest room overlooking the snowy hills, warm sheets, and a heavy comforter she didn't need but wrapped around herself anyway.
The door closed behind her. She immediately passed out, exhausted from the day's events.
Downstairs, the fire crackled softly.
Tanya turned to Rosalie and Kate. "Okay. What the hell was that?"
Rosalie gave a tight smile but didn't speak. It was Kate who answered.
"She's our mate," she said simply. "We both felt it. You saw it."
Tanya blinked. "What? You're sure?"
Kate nodded once. "I've never felt that before. Neither has Rosalie. It hit us like a wave the second we saw her."
Carmen's eyes lit up with delight. "Oh, that's wonderful!"
"She doesn't know," Rosalie said quietly. "Not really. But she felt something. I could see it in her."
Eleazar leaned forward from where he sat on the arm of the couch. "Three mates… it's rare. But not unheard of. Given Katherine's hybrid nature, the bond might have manifested differently. More complex."
"She's already unusual," Carmen agreed, still smiling. "Maybe she was always meant to belong somewhere… less traditional."
Tanya looked between them. "So what's the plan? You just tell her tomorrow? Drop the 'surprise, you're our mate' bomb over breakfast?"
Kate chuckled. "I don't think she'd take it well. Katherine's… guarded. And wild. She'll run if we push."
Rosalie met Tanya's gaze, her voice softer than usual. "We'll figure it out. Slowly. Carefully. She deserves that."
Tanya leaned back, lips twitching. "Well, this just got interesting."
