Cora sat in the backyard on the swing set. She wasn't really swinging back and forth, just moving her feet to make the swing move slightly. She stopped moving and looked up at the sky and sighed. She could see stars, but even if they did live in Bay Ridge, it still wasn't enough to see even more of them because it was too bright. There was just too much light here. She kept looking up at the stars even as Jamie took a seat on the swing next to her.

"Hey baby girl. What are you doing out here?"

Cora smiled and looked at Jamie, then pointed up.

"The stars."

Smiling, Jamie looked up at the stars with Cora, enjoying the bonding time they were getting together.

"You always did love the stars baby girl. Ever since you were little. Thinking about becoming an astronaut?"

Cora shook her head no and looked over at Jamie.

"No daddy. I want to keep my feet on the ground. I still want to become a doctor."

Jamie never felt more proud hearing Cora say that. Moving slightly on the swing, Jamie pulled an envelope from his pocket.

"That makes me very happy to hear ladybug. By the way, this is for you."

Cora stopped her movement on the swing and looked over at Jamie.

"What is it?"

Jamie held it out to her.

"It's for you. Open it."

Cora reached for the envelope and took it from Jamie. Turning it over, she read the title on the envelope.

"Grace Charter School. This is from my school daddy. But why are they sending me this? I'm not in trouble am I?"

Jamie reached for Cora's hand and squeezed it, the smile still on his face.

"No honey. You're not in trouble. Open it. I want to see what the letter says."

Taking a breath, Cora slowly opened the envelope and pulled out a letter addressed to her.

"Dear Cora,

On behalf of the faculty and staff at Grace Charter School, we are proud to to announce with your hard work and dedication in completing your required coursework early, you will be graduating with this year's class. The graduation ceremony will be held in the auditorium on June 16th. Friends and family members are encouraged to attend. We wish you luck in all your future endeavors."

Sincerely,

Marian Woodson

Principal, Grace Charter School

Cora folded the letter and placed it carefully back into the envelope and gave a happy sigh looking up at the sky.

"I got a second chance at life daddy. I'm not going to waste it."

Jamie pulled Cora closer to him despite the two of them being on the swings.

"You've done a great job baby girl. I'm so proud of you. Now the next step. Seeing which colleges are accepting you."

Cora got butterflies in her stomach. All the possibilities were coming together. It was only June. Her birthday wasn't for another three months. She had all summer to enjoy after graduation which was next week.

"Come on daddy, let's go tell everyone else."

Cora took Jamie's hand and pulled him up. The two exited the backyard and went into the house. Raising her voice, she called for Eddie.

"Mama! I'm graduating next week!"

Eddie came out of the kitchen, her hands still soapy from rinsing the dishes in the sink, about ready to place them in the dishwasher.

"What's going on honey?"

Cora held up the letter Jamie had given her in the backyard.

"Look mama. This letter says I'm graduating next week! I didn't think I would graduate early. Daddy and I worked very hard on my classes."

Eddie tried to hug Cora without getting soap all over her.

"I'm so proud of you honey. I know you are going to be a great doctor. Now we just have to wait and see which school are accepting you."

Cora nodded excitedly. Patrick broke the moment as he came downstairs.

"What going on mom?"

Eddie smiled and let go of Cora.

"Your sister is graduating next week."

A smile came to Patrick's face.

"Congratulations sis. You deserve it. Now, should I started calling you 'Doctor Reagan' yet?"

Cora punched Patrick's arm.

"Not yet Pat! I haven't even got accepted into a college yet. I'm still waiting to hear back. Cross your fingers for me."

Patrick rolled his eyes but pulled his sister into a hug. Then whispered into her ear.

"Proud of you. I may be your little brother. But I've always looked up to you."

Now it was Cora's turn to roll her eyes.

"Come on Pat. Looking up to me? Please."

The two siblings laughed and shook their heads. Life was finally starting to get back to normal.
