It was a rainy day in both worlds. Heaven is not affected because they live on the clouds high above. Gwen and her friends go about their usual morning. Gwen feeds her new pet rainbow phoenix Renata rare spices and fruit extracts provided by the servants.
"Here you are girl." Gwen said, handing Renata a bowl on her perch.
Renata started eating the provided food.
Gwen rejoins her friends in the dining room and finishes breakfast.
"How's Renata adjusting?" Clarence asked, eating eggs.
"She's doing great. She loves us, she's well settled." Gwen answered.
The group finish breakfast and decide what they want to do today. Renata flew to her perch and picked at her feathers like all birds do.
"So, any chambers we wanna look for today?" Ms. Chalice asked.
"Didn't you say there's a tennis court?" Cuphead asked.
"Oh yeah. Let's play a game." Gwen said.
The group wear appropriate attire and grab tennis rackets and a tennis ball.
"Okay, who's serving first?" Gwen asked.
"Me! Me! Me!" The 3 cups exclaimed.
"Clarence." Gwen randomly chose.
All the cups groaned as Clarence smirked. He stood next to Gwen on one side and the cups stood on the other side. Clarence hit the tennis ball as Mugman hit it back to them. Gwen took the next hit and Cuphead slammed the ball way too hard, flying beyond the palace.
"Nice shot dumdum!" Mugman scolded.
"Hey! I just got us a score!" Cuphead argued.
"That doesn't count. That's a foul ball." Ms. Chalice pointed out.
"She's right." Clarence agreed.
"I'll have a servant get it." Gwen said feeling annoyed.
A servant quickly came up to them with the tennis ball.
"Here milady." The servant said.
"Thank you." Gwen thanked.
The servant bowed to her mistress. They continued playing until they got bored.
"I'm bored now. Let's go somewhere new and exciting." Cuphead suggested.
"Any ideas? We were in Spain last time. Where haven't we gone yet?" Mugman asked.
"We've been to South America, Europe…" Clarence said.
"What about Central America?" Gwen asked.
"There's an idea." Clarence agreed.
"What countries are in Central America?" Ms. Chalice asked.
Gwen made her globe appear and looked at Central America between North and South America.
"There's Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama." Gwen said, tracking each of the 7 countries.
"Well, we'll just visit one today then the other 6 in the future." Cuphead said.
"Should we randomly pick which one today?" Clarence asked.
Gwen covered her eyes and held up her right index finger.
"Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by the toe. If he hollers, let him go. Eeny, meeny, miny, moe!" Gwen said the counting-out rhyme until her finger landed on Costa Rica.
"Your finger landed on Costa Rica." Ms. Chalice said.
"What's in Costa Rica?" Mugman asked.
"It's got rainforests, the famous city of San José, coffee plantations, beaches, sloths, monkeys and birds." Clarence answered.
"Ooh! Sounds exciting!" Mugman said excitedly.
"Well, what are we waitin' for? Let's go!" Cuphead said excitedly.
Gwen sends a message to Zeus. After a few seconds, a scroll appeared in her hand, and she opened and read it.
"Yep. We're good to go." Gwen confirmed.
She tapped her ink pen, and the group disappeared and appeared in the city of San José, Costa Rica.
"Bienvenido to San José, Costa Rica." Gwen announced.
"Nice city here." Mugman said looking around.
"Alright, shall we fly around?" Clarence asked.
"With pleasure." Gwen answered.
Gwen summoned Cerulean Bolt from her satchel. The group hop on and start their sightseeing in the sky.
First, they travel north to find a famous beautiful waterfall. In the jungle, they approach a flowing waterfall flowing from a dormant volcano.
"Ooh! Pretty waterfall!" Mugman said.
"That is La Fortuna Waterfall." Gwen said.
"At least we didn't hike here judging from those hundreds of steps on those stairs." Cuphead said.
"Lot of pretty orchid flowers." Ms. Chalice said as she attempted to touch a flower.
Clarence quickly stopped Ms. Chalice from touching the orchid.
"Don't touch the orchids!" Clarence scolded.
"Why not?" Ms. Chalice asked.
Clarence pointed and Ms. Chalice noticed a sign that says, 'Do Not Touch the Orchids!'
"Oh, right." Ms. Chalice said awkwardly.
"Ooh! Birds!" Mugman pointed.
The group look and notice hummingbirds, toucans, macaws and various birds flying through the rainforest.
"Really beautiful seeing them fly free." Gwen said.
"Yeah, they don't belong in cages." Clarence agreed.
Just then, they hear a familiar screeching noise in the sky.
"There's another bird." Cuphead said.
"Wait a minute!" Gwen said, looking up in the sky.
"Renata…" Gwen sternly called.
Just then, Renata flew down to the group and perched on Gwen's shoulder and shook her feathers from the humidity.
"How'd you get here?" Gwen asked.
Renata chirped.
"You just flew down here from the palace? And you can find me anywhere?" Gwen asked.
"Wow, she really is a magical bird." Mugman said.
"You shouldn't be here. Somebody could see you and try to capture you." Gwen cautioned.
Renata chirped as she flew into the sky and did some loop-de-loops.
"Uh, what is she doing?" Ms. Chalice asked.
"Renata said not to worry. We're the only one's who can see her." Gwen said.
"Wait, she can turn invisible?" Clarence asked.
"Technically yes. But we can see her since she's permitted us to see her. Other people can't see her unless she trusts them." Gwen said.
"I wonder what food Costa Rica has." Cuphead asked, feeling hungry.
The group fly back to San José and shop at a local gift shop. They purchase bamboo jewelry, maracas, wooden oxcarts, painted towels, colorful pottery and sloth plush toys.
Next, they stop at a local restaurant for lunch. They order tamales, empanadas, gallo pinto, tostadas and rice pudding and merengue cookies for dessert.
"Pretty good. Similar to Mexican food." Cuphead said, eating a tamale.
"Well, they're Latina countries." Mugman said, eating some gallo pinto.
"Doesn't matter. Every place has its awesome foods." Ms. Chalice said eating a tostada.
"Who'd like to do the toast this time?" Gwen asked.
"I haven't gone yet." Clarence said.
"Okay, honey." Gwen said.
The humans grabbed their glasses of Guaro sour, and the cups grabbed their glasses of Agua de Sapo.
"To a Costa Rican Day of fun!" Clarence toasted.
They clinked their glasses and sipped their drinks.
"So, you guys wanna hit the beach after lunch?" Clarence asked.
"Yeah!" The cups cheered.
Just then, a young teenage girl appeared asking various people for help.
"Help! My family! Lost in rainforest! There was an accident!" The girl yelled.
Gwen looked concerned for the girl.
"Uh oh." Cuphead said.
"That doesn't sound good." Mugman added.
"Excuse me a sec guys." Gwen said.
She gets up from the table and walked to the desperate girl who looked ragged and dirty.
"Are you okay miss?" Gwen asked.
The girl looked at Gwen.
"Help! My parents! They're lost and injured!" The girl exclaimed panicking.
"Calm down. Calm down." Gwen said, trying to calm her.
The girl took deep breaths.
"Here, why don't you join me, my fiancé and friends for lunch? You can explain everything." Gwen offered.
The girl thought for a moment and nodded.
"Okay, come with me." Gwen said.
She led the girl to their table and pulled up an extra chair. Gwen gives her a plate and started plating up food and eating.
"What happened to you?" Cuphead asked.
"Cuphead! Let her eat. Then she'll tell us." Gwen scolded.
After eating, the girl sipped some cold water and ate some rice pudding and merengue cookies.
"Feel better?" Clarence asked.
"Sí señor." The girl thanked.
"What's your name?" Mugman asked.
"Teresa Diaz." Teresa introduced herself.
"Gwendolyn Mae Emmons. Gwen for short. My fiancé Clarence Hopewell. Cuphead, Mugman and Ms. Chalice." Gwen introduced.
"Hola Teresa." Ms. Chalice said.
Teresa looked at the cups and gasped in shock.
"Tazas!" Teresa exclaimed.
"Yes, we have cups for heads. We ain't from your world." Cuphead explained.
"Oh wow." Teresa said amazed.
"Anyway, tell us what happened. Where are your parents?" Gwen asked.
"Oh Sí! My parents, my little sister and I were on family outing. We were on rainforest tour with a guide who drove us in his jeep. We were heading back when suddenly, a jaguar jumped in our path and the tour guide swerved the jeep off the road. We were rolling down the hill until we crashed into some trees at the bottom. My parents are alive but badly injured and the tour guide is unconscious. Only I was able to walk so I told Natalia to look after our parents while I find help." Teresa explained and cried.
"Oh no! We gotta save your family! Where are they now?" Clarence asked.
"In the jungle trapped in the jeep." Teresa answered.
Gwen summoned Cerulean Bolt and flew out of the satchel. Teresa gasped in shock.
"Wh-Wh-What is that?!" Teresa asked shockingly.
Gwen cleared her throat, knowing it was coming.
"Teresa, this is my magic carpet Cerulean Bolt." Gwen introduced.
Cerulean Bolt shook hands with Teresa.
"Hola." Teresa nervously greeted.
The group hops on the magic carpet. Gwen reached her hand to Teresa.
"We'll get a better view from above. It'll be okay." Gwen assured her.
Teresa hesitated until she remembered her family and grabbed Gwen's hand and climbed on.
"Which way?" Gwen asked.
Teresa pointed in a direction.
"Okay, buddy. We gotta find a crash site and an injured family." Gwen instructed.
Cerulean Bolt gave a thumbs up gesture and started flying in the direction over the rainforest. Teresa held Gwen as she exclaimed in shock.
"It's okay. You'll be safe with us." Mugman assured her.
Teresa nodded as they kept flying. Teresa catches sight of a familiar hill with trees at the bottom where smoke was rising.
"There! There's the crash site!" Teresa said as she pointed.
Cerulean Bolt flew in the direction and to the group's horror, the jeep was crushed, was on fire and three people were trapped inside. Teresa quickly hops off and ran to the damaged jeep.
"Mama! Papa!" Teresa cried.
The group ran up to the burning car. Teresa struggled to get the door open.
"It's jammed!" Teresa yelled.
Gwen took off her silver bracelet and approached the door.
"I got this." Gwen said.
Gwen's hands suddenly turned metal and easily ripped open the jeep without harm to her, creating a hole. Teresa gasped in shock at Gwen's powers.
"Ay yi yi yi!" Teresa explained.
"I know! I'm magic and powerful!" Gwen said, holding the jeep open.
"Oh no! They're in there!" Clarence exclaimed.
"Get them out of there! Now!" Gwen yelled.
Inside, there were two unconscious people. Clarence and Teresa crawled in and grabbed both mother and father.
"Teresa!" A younger female voice cried.
Teresa looked and noticed a little girl laying in the car crying.
"Natalia!" Teresa cried.
"Hurry!" Gwen yelled.
The cups crawled in and grabbed Natalia and carry her out of the wreckage along with the unconscious parents. Gwen quickly grabbed the driver, and everyone quickly ran away when suddenly…
BOOM!
The car wreckage exploded as the group looked in shock.
"And to think that could've been us." Cuphead said.
Clarence laid the unconscious mother as Teresa laid her unconscious father on the ground. Gwen laid the driver on the ground and looked at their injuries.
"Oh no. They're hurt really bad." Gwen said worryingly.
She knelt down to them and prepared to use her ink pen when suddenly, Renata screeched and flew down to the group. Teresa gasped in shock.
"Ay yi yi yi! What is that?!" Teresa asked shockingly.
"Wait, you can see her?" Gwen asked.
"Sí! What is that colorful bird?" Teresa asked.
"Renata! What are you doing?" Gwen asked.
"Renata? Is that her name?" Teresa asked.
Renata walked over to the couple and started crying. Her tears landed on each human as their injuries started healing. Teresa knelt next to Gwen watching in awe at the phoenix's magic. Renata walked up to the driver, but she doesn't cry on him.
"Come on girl. Cry on him." Mugman encouraged.
But Renata hung her head down in sadness, hinting something.
"Oh no…" Clarence said worryingly.
Gwen goes up to the driver and checked his pulse on his neck, which she unfortunately didn't feel any.
"He's dead." Gwen grimly said.
Everyone hung their heads down in sadness, mourning for the deceased stranger.
"We need to get this family back to San José pronto. I'll get him to the authorities." Gwen said.
"Agreed." Ms. Chalice said.
Later, the group were back in San José as the parents were taken to the hospital and the deceased driver was taken for an autopsy at a local morgue. Inside the hospital, the group sat with Teresa and Natalia.
"So, what happens now?" Cuphead asked.
"All we can do now is hope for recovery for the Diaz family and wish them the best buddy." Gwen answered.
"I feel really bad for that driver." Mugman said wiping a tear.
Gwen wrapped her arm around Mugman.
"I know buddy. I do too. His soul will be in Heaven shortly." Gwen said.
She noticed the driver in his ghost form going up an escalator into the light in the sky. The driver nodded at Gwen as she gave a nod back.
"What are you nodding at?" Ms. Chalice asked.
Gwen realized no one else could see the stairway to Heaven for new souls.
"Nothing Chalice." Gwen denied.
Natalia looked at her three rescuers with cups for heads.
"Tazas." Natalia said.
"That's right. We have tazas for heads." Mugman said with a smile.
"I'm Cuphead. This is Mugman and Ms. Chalice." Cuphead introduced.
"You okay Nat?" Ms. Chalice asked.
"Sí. Are mama and papa okay?" Natalia asked.
"They will be sweetheart." Clarence assured her.
Just then, a doctor steps into the waiting room. Gwen, Clarence and Teresa walked up to the doctor.
"Hola doctor, we're with Mr. and Mrs. Diaz. How are they?" Gwen asked.
"Well, it was a surprise to us, but they were covered in smoke and dirt, but they strangely have no physical injuries. Like it never happened." The doctor answered.
The group knew the reason why as Renata flew and perched next to the cups and Natalia on a chair.
"Wow! A real phoenix!" Natalia said.
"Here, wanna pet her? She's really nice." Cuphead asked.
Natalia petted Renata on her head as she made a cooing noise, showing affection. Natalia smiled, feeling better despite the situation.
"Aw, Renata likes you." Mugman said.
"Renata." Natalia repeated.
"Yeah. She's Gwen's pet phoenix." Ms. Chalice said.
Meanwhile, the trio were still chatting with the doctor about the parents.
"We'll keep them here for observation and the authorities will ask them questions about the accident. And they'll want to ask you and your strange friends about the rescue." The doctor explained.
"Sí doctor. We understand." Teresa said.
"What about the driver?" Clarence asked.
"They've informed the family of his passing, and the funeral arrangements will begin." The doctor answered.
"I'm praying for them." Gwen said, feeling bad.
After a few hours of questioning from the doctor and authorities, the group escort the Diaz family back to their home to recovery from the incident. They leave to try to return to their day of fun, even though everyone felt sadness from the day's events. They walked towards the rainforest.
"Some day of fun this was." Cuphead said.
"Cuphead, it's one of those days when unexpected things happen. Besides, if we haven't been there, they all could've been dead." Clarence said.
"Clarence is right. We didn't know what would happen." Gwen said.
"Hey, what's that in those trees?" Mugman asked, pointing up.
The group look up and noticed a three-toed sloth.
"Sloth!" Ms. Chalice exclaimed.
The group looked up at the sloth as she just hung on the tree branch. Just then, they hear a high-pitched squeak.
"That was a cute little squeak." Cuphead said, feeling happy.
"Wait a minute." Clarence said looking around.
Just then, they noticed a baby sloth on the ground crying for its mother.
"Oh, you poor thing!" Gwen exclaimed as she gently lifted the baby sloth in her hands.
"Aww!" The cups exclaimed as they gently petted the baby sloth.
"Don't cry little one. Let's get you back to your mommy." Gwen gently said.
The mother sloth started climbing down the tree toward the group.
Gwen hands the baby to Clarence as he stretched his arm to the mother. The mother reached her arm and held Clarence's hand as the baby clinged on to its mother.
"There you go baby." Clarence gently said.
The mother sloth hugged her baby, happy to be reunited. She squeaked at the group.
"You're welcome." Gwen said.
"They're so cute." Cuphead said.
"Sí, they are cute Cuphead." Teresa said.
The group looked and noticed Teresa and Natalia approaching them.
"Are you gonna be, okay? You and your sister?" Gwen asked.
"We will be thanks to all of you." Teresa said.
Teresa hugged Gwen with tears in her eyes.
"How can we repay you?" Teresa asked.
"Oh, don't worry. The important thing is you're all safe." Gwen said, being polite.
"You saved us." Natalia said, hugging Gwen too.
"I'm so sorry I couldn't save the driver." Gwen apologized, having a tear.
"No, Gwen. That was not your fault. There would've been nothing you could've done. You brought his body back to his family. That meant something." Teresa assured her.
Gwen looked at both sisters, realizing she is not to blame.
"We were just about to head this beautiful beach in Quepos. Wanna join us?" Clarence asked.
"Sì, we would love to." Teresa answered.
"Great. Natalia can play with the cups." Gwen said.
"Yay!" Natalia said excitedly.
Later, the group were settled on the beach in Quepos as Natalia played with Cuphead, Mugman and Ms. Chalice on the beach.
"I'm happy seeing Natalia smiling again." Teresa said, sipping a Guaro sour.
"Yeah. None of you deserved that kind of trauma." Gwen said.
"Gracias, Gwen." Teresa thanked.
"Hey guys! Look!" Clarence said pointing up.
The girls look up in the trees and noticed a pair of capuchin monkeys looking at them.
"Aw, cute little monkeys." Teresa said.
The capuchin monkeys hopped away back into the jungle. Then, they noticed some scarlet macaws perched in another tree.
"Look at those red macaws." Clarence said.
"Scarlet." Gwen corrected.
"There's a toucan." Teresa pointed out.
They looked and noticed a toucan perched on another tree branch.
"Really cool animals they have here." Cuphead said.
The cups and Natalia join the trio looking at the wildlife. Just then, they heard a howling noise. The group looked in another direction and noticed another species of monkey howling.
"Ugh. Howler monkeys. Very noisy." Teresa said annoyed.
"Why do they howl?" Mugman asked.
"It's how they let other monkeys know where they are." Natalia answered.
Cuphead grabbed a coconut fallen from a palm tree.
"Shut up you stupid monkey!" Cuphead yelled.
He threw the coconut at the howler monkey, knocking him down.
"That oughta keep your big trap shut!" Cuphead taunted.
Suddenly, a troupe of howler monkeys appeared with various fruits in their hands, looking angry.
"Uh oh. Now you've done it." Mugman said worryingly as the group backed away from Cuphead.
"What?" Cuphead asked.
Suddenly, the howler monkeys threw all the fruit they had at Cuphead, making him covered in a big fruity mess.
"Oh yeah? Just try that again you…" Cuphead dared.
BONK!
The howler monkey who was knocked by a coconut threw it back at Cuphead, making him fall to the ground as pain stars circled his head. Natalia couldn't help but laugh at Cuphead's misery.
"Okay, moving on." Ms. Chalice said, lifting Cuphead on his feet.
The group quickly walked away from the howler monkeys. They kept traveling along and then noticed a two-toed sloth hanging in the trees.
"Hey look! Another sloth!" Cuphead said and pointed.
They looked up and noticed a brown sloth with two claws on its arms.
"Oh yeah. A two-toed sloth." Teresa said.
"There's two-toed and three-toed sloths?" Ms. Chalice asked.
"Sì, Chalice." Natalia said.
Then they noticed a light brown and white monkey.
"Ooh! Squirrel monkey!" Teresa said excitedly.
"Squirrel monkey? That doesn't look like a squirrel." Cuphead said, wiping the last of the fruit off his shirt.
"No, Cuphead. That's just their name." Clarence said.
"They are a very rare monkey." Teresa added.
The squirrel monkey chirped at the group.
"Thanks! You too!" Gwen called, knowing what the squirrel monkey said.
"What'd the monkey say?" Mugman asked.
"He said 'Pura vida'." Gwen answered.
"What does that mean?" Cuphead asked.
"It means 'pure life'. It is a greeting in Costa Rica." Teresa explained.
The squirrel monkey crawled away into the jungle.
"That was cool!" Natalia exclaimed.
"Sí Natalia. Despite all that's happened, things still turned out great." Teresa said, raising Natalia's spirits.
The group went back to their spot on the beach and the children continued playing. Just then, Mr. and Mrs. Diaz recovered from the accident approached with food along with other locals.
"What's all this?" Gwen asked.
"Oh, we have a surprise for you guys." Teresa said with a smile.
The locals set up tables, food and a music band set up their instruments.
"Cool! Are we having a beach party?" Cuphead asked.
"In a way, sí. We want to show you our gratitude for all you've done." Teresa answered.
"Aw, you didn't have to." Clarence said.
"No, we insist." Natalia said.
Later, there was a festive celebration on the beach with music, dancing and food. Mr. and Mrs. Diaz expressed their gratitude for to the group for saving their lives. The cups and Natalia play with Renata while no one else could see the phoenix.
"I see why they say 'pura vida.' It's easy to relax here and people are so laid back here." Gwen said, sipping some juice.
"Yeah." Clarence agreed.
"We should head home. It's getting dark." Gwen said, noticing the sun setting.
The group prepare to leave for Heaven as Teresa walked up to them.
"You're leaving?" Teresa asked.
"I'm afraid we must." Gwen answered.
Teresa hugged Gwen.
"I can't thank you enough for everything. Please come back. We'd love to see you again." Teresa said.
"We'll take you up on that." Gwen said.
Gwen teleports herself and the group back to Heaven.
"Whoo! What a day!" Cuphead exclaimed.
"You said it." Mugman agreed.
Renata flew to her perch and started grooming itself.
Just then, Zeus entered the palace.
"Lord Zeus! What can I do for you?" Gwen asked as the others bowed.
"Gosa, I have something to show you." Zeus said as he led Gwen to the reflecting pool.
He taps it and the pool showed construction on the outskirts of Inkwell City on what appeared to be a temple.
"What's this?" Gwen asked.
"You know how each of us gods have a temple in our honor in different cities in Greece?" Zeus asked.
"Oh yeah. You have a temple in Crete. Athena has one in Athens. Ares has one in Sparta." Gwen said, naming examples until Zeus cut her off.
"Yes, exactly. Now, you will have a temple in your honor where you are worshipped the most." Zeus explained.
"What? But they don't know I'm a goddess now." Gwen said.
"No. But they do know of the goddess Gosa who they now honor. You." Zeus explained.
Zeus tapped the water, and it reveals a statue being carved of Gwen in her goddess form.
"Wow. At least they won't know about my new status." Gwen said.
"Exactly. They know you as Gwen, their hero." Zeus confirmed.
Gwen smiled, knowing the citizens of Inkwell City love her for her kindness and good deeds.
"Cool!" Cuphead complimented.
"That's nice." Mugman added.
"When it's completed, we'll have to check it out." Clarence said.
"I second that." Ms. Chalice agreed.
"Well, then. I have a meeting to tend to. So, I'll see you all later." Zeus said and teleported back to his palace.
"So, what do you guys wanna do now?" Cuphead asked.
"Ooh! Let's go look at that cool zoo chamber where all those rescued animals are!" Ms. Chalice suggested.
"Oh yeah. Artemis the goddess of wildlife and hunt explained they are rescued animals who were abused and tortured by cruel evil humans, but she rescued them and brought them here to live in sanctuary." Gwen explained.
"That's terrible." Mugman said.
"What are we waitin' for? Let's go!" Cuphead asked excitedly.
The group headed inside the chamber and to their shock, it is an open area of exhibits of various animals of all the countries they've visited.
They visited the exhibits of each of the continents they have visited with animals from large cats, birds, amphibians, reptiles, bears and mammals. Various servants tend to the animals and care for them.
"This is awesome! Bigger than the zoo back home!" Cuphead said, looking around.
"Yeah. The Devil can't release the carnivores here!" Mugman said.
"Yeesh." Clarence winced.
They looked at various animals from giraffes to elephants. Just then, Cuphead noticed a monkey exhibit with various monkeys.
"AAHHH!" Cuphead screamed and ran out of the chamber.
"What's his problem with monkeys?" The lead servant asked.
"He doesn't have a good history with them." Gwen hinted and laughed.
After looking at all the exhibits, the group leaves the chamber to turn in for the night with Cuphead.
"Alright, I'm gonna turn in." Cuphead said.
"Me too." Mugman agreed.
"Another day of fun awaits tomorrow." Ms. Chalice said.
The cups head to their rooms to bed. Gwen and Clarence head to the master bed chamber and go to bed. Renata flies on her bed on the mantle on the fireplace.
The next day, the group go about their usual morning having breakfast together when Gwen hears Teresa's words in her head.
"Gwen, if you can hear me, you saved my family from a cruel fate. I owe you everything. Thank you." Teresa prayed.
