Narrator's POV

Konoha

After both ANBU left,

In the quiet stillness of the night, the air in the Hokage's office was heavy with tension. The Sandaime Hokage stood by the window, his gaze fixed on the moonlit village below. The faint glow of lanterns lit up the streets, but his mind was far from the serenity the scene suggested. Taking a drag from his pipe, he exhaled slowly, the smoke curling into the dimly lit room as he contemplated recent events.

A knock at the door interrupted his musings.

Sandaime : Yes, come in. [ he said, turning around and walking to his chair to see who had come at this late hour. ]

Entering his office were the village elders, also known as the Sandaime Hokage's advisers—Utatane Koharu, Mitokado Homura, and Shimura Danzō.

Sandaime : Koharu, Homura, Danzō. To what do I owe your presence? [ he asked, his tone calm but carrying a faint edge of nonchalance .]

Homura : We've come to discuss an important matter—one that cannot be ignored. Why weren't we informed or called to deliberate on the sudden wave of chakra that surged through the village?

Sandaime : There is nothing to discuss, esteemed advisers. I assure you the situation is under control. If that is all you came for, you are dismissed—I have pressing work to attend to. [ he said with nonchalance. ]

Homura : [ He, clearly agitated, was the first to respond to the Hokage'snonchalance, his expression betraying a mix of frustration and urgency. ] Don't take us for fools, Hiruzen. Do you truly expect us to turn a blind eye to such a powerful surge of chakra? The very foundation of Konoha trembled for a moment.

The Sandaime's eyes narrowed slightly at the disrespectful tone, but before he could respond, Homura continued.

Homura : The sensory department was overwhelmed, and the ninja on patrol were scrambling to make sense of it. It wasn't just some faint anomaly—it was enough to alert the entire village. You may have chosen to remain silent about it so far, but as your advisers, we have the right to know what happened.

Sandaime : It's Lord Third to you. [ he interrupted sharply, his voice firm and commanding. ]

Homura : [ His expression stiffened at the rebuke, and he replied in a clipped tone. ] Apologies for overstepping, Lord Third. As I was saying, we all felt that wave of chakra resonate through the village. It was powerful—dense—and the sensory department was thrown into disarray. We've come to discuss the cause.

Koharu : Lord Third, is the Nine-Tails secure within Kushina? Or should we prepare for an attack? We all know the Third Great Ninja War looms on the horizon.

Sandaime : [ Sighing deeply, he exhaled a plume of smoke before answering.] I can assure you that the Nine-Tails remains safe within Kushina. There is no reason to worry. As for the war, if it is confirmed, I will call the council immediately. Rest assured, preparations will be made.

Danzō : [ Stepping forward, his calculating gaze fixed on the Hokage. ] If that is true, Hiruzen, then surely you know where that chakra wave originated? And if, as you say, it's not the Nine-Tails or an enemy preparing for an attack—

The Sandaime met his gaze without flinching.

Sandaime : I don't have the answer to that yet. [ he admitted, his gaze steady. ] But I've dispatched ANBU to investigate, and they should return soon with the necessary information. If the matter is truly grave or requires your input, I will, of course, consult you—or call a council if needed. But until then, you are dismissed. I trust this alleviates your concerns. [ he finished, his tone leaving no room for argument. ]

Koharu and Homura exchanged glances before nodding.

Koharu : Understood, Hokage-sama.

Homura : Yes, Hokage-sama. [ he muttered, nodding as he and Koharu exited the office. ]

However, Danzō remained, his presence heavy with unspoken intent.

Sandaime : Do you have something else to discuss, Danzō? [ he asked, his tone resigned yet firm. ]

Danzō : It's about Uzushio—

Sandaime : No.[ he interjected sharply, cutting him off. ] We've already discussed this many times, and my answer remains the same, Danzō.

Danzō : [ Lips pressed into a thin line, he persisted. ] You're making a mistake, Hiruzen.[ he argued, his tone laced with frustration.] Uzushio housed numerous clans. Their knowledge—especially their mastery of sealing techniques—could be invaluable to us in the coming war. We can't let it all go to waste! We could get Kushina's help—

Sandaime : [ Narrowing his eyes at the statement, he replied in a stone-cold voice. ] If Kushina ever wishes to visit Uzushio to pay her respects, I will ensure she has the necessary protection. But I will not force her to go there, nor will I exploit the remnants of our ally for personal gain. Let me remind you, Danzō, that Uzushio was our ally, our sister village. We may have failed to protect them from destruction, but I will not tarnish what remains of their legacy by looting their knowledge to bolster our own.

Danzō : [ His lips thinned, frustration barely concealed on his face, as he replied. ] You're being naive, Hiruzen—

Sandaime : It's Lord Third to you, Shimura Danzō. [ he interrupted coldly. ]

Danzō : Understood, Lord Third. But you know as well as I do that the sealing knowledge they possessed could strengthen our village in the upcoming war. We need every advantage we can get. We cannot afford to—

Sandaime : Enough, Danzō. [ he said sharply. ] Konoha does not need to rob the dead to secure its strength. As for our defenses, Konoha is strong enough without resorting to raiding the remains of a dead village. That is my final word on the matter. If you have nothing else to discuss, you are dismissed.

Danzō : [ Grinding his teeth, he narrowed his eyes but nodded stiffly. ] Understood, Hokage-sama.

As he turned to leave, anger evident in his brisk pace, the Sandaime's voice, colder than before, stopped him in his tracks.

Sandaime : And, Danzō—

Danzō froze mid-step, his body tense.

Sandaime : I expect there will be no further attempts by your minions to infiltrate Uzushio. Do I make myself clear?

Danzō : [ His jaw tightened as he absorbed the warning, but he nodded once more. ] Understood, Lord Third.

With that, he left the office, his earlier anger replaced by silent fury.

The Sandaime let out a long sigh of relief as the door closed.

Returning to the window, he gazed at Konoha, bathed in the soft glow of night. The village seemed peaceful, but the tension brewing beneath the surface was undeniable. Taking a deep drag from his pipe, he exhaled slowly, contemplating the challenges ahead.

He knew Danzō would not let this matter rest easily, his stubbornness matched only by his ambition. Hiruzen also knew he would have to keep a close eye on him and his ROOT forces—forces he had turned a blind eye to for far too long.

Perhaps I've given him too much freedom. But dealing with him now would only invite chaos, he thought grimly.

Shaking his head, he sighed again.

Sandaime : I'm getting too old for this. [ he mused to himself. ]

Taking a final drag from his pipe, he turned back to his desk, determined to finish his paperwork quickly so he could finally go home.
