Chapter 3: Slifer vs. the Bully

The sun blazed down on Duel Academy, its rays reflecting off the metallic surfaces of the school's towers. Harry walked through the busy campus, the sea of students bustling around him as they chatted, dueled, and practiced with their Duel Disks. The bright red of his Slifer Red blazer felt a bit out of place, but Harry had learned to ignore it. His focus was elsewhere—the strange world he found himself in and the dueling that seemed to define everything here.

"Hey, Harry!" Jaden's voice called out from behind, snapping him from his thoughts.

Harry turned around to see Jaden walking toward him, his usual grin in place. It was hard to miss the easygoing aura that surrounded Jaden—his confidence was contagious.

"Hey, Jaden," Harry greeted, returning the smile.

"You settling in alright?" Jaden asked as they began walking together. "Getting used to this place?"

"Yeah, getting there," Harry said with a shrug, but the nervous energy he felt never quite went away. He glanced down at his Duel Disk again, the metallic device that felt almost foreign to him. It wasn't magic in the way he was used to, but there was something undeniably powerful about it. "Still trying to figure out how all of this works, though."

Jaden gave a reassuring chuckle. "It'll make sense soon enough. Don't worry about it." He paused and then added, "Hey, you'll meet some new folks today. You know Syrus, right? He's in Slifer Red too. He's a good guy—kind of reminds me of you, actually."

Harry raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"

"Yeah, totally," Jaden said with a grin. "He's a bit of a nervous guy, but once you get to know him, you'll see what I mean."

"Sounds like someone I know," Harry said with a small smile. He wasn't sure what Jaden meant, but the reference made him think of Neville—a good-hearted guy who could be shy but had a lot of hidden potential.

As they rounded a corner, Jaden waved toward a group of students. Among them was a boy with messy blue hair, his nervous eyes darting around as if looking for a way to blend into the crowd. Harry had seen him around before, but this time Jaden seemed eager to introduce him.

"That's Syrus!" Jaden called out, waving as he jogged over. "Hey, buddy, this is Harry! The new guy I was telling you about."

Syrus blinked as Jaden approached, his eyes widening with a mix of surprise and curiosity. "Oh, uh, hi!" he said, his voice a little too loud and too fast. Harry could see the nervous energy radiating off him, and the way his posture seemed slightly hunched. It was like watching a younger version of Neville try to make himself smaller in a crowd.

"Hey, Syrus," Harry said, offering a friendly smile. "Nice to meet you."

"Y-yeah! Nice to meet you too!" Syrus stammered, adjusting his Duel Disk nervously. "I… I've heard about you. You're the guy with the amazing deck, right?"

"Something like that," Harry replied, glancing at Jaden with a bit of surprise. He hadn't realized his duel had made that much of an impression.

Syrus looked at Jaden, who gave him an encouraging nod. "Syrus here's a bit of a strategist," Jaden added. "He's always got a plan when he duels."

"That's right! I... I like to think things through, y'know," Syrus said, clearly trying to steady himself. "I might not be as flashy as Jaden, but I've got a solid strategy under my belt."

Harry chuckled softly. "Sounds like someone I know."

Syrus looked up, his eyes narrowing as if trying to figure out who Harry was talking about.

"I was thinking," Jaden suddenly interjected, his usual grin creeping back onto his face, "we could have a little practice duel. What do you say, Harry?"

"I'm not sure if I'm ready for that yet," Harry said, feeling the weight of his unfamiliarity with the dueling world pressing down on him. He still didn't fully understand how everything worked.

"No worries!" Jaden said with a wink. "We can take it easy."

Before Harry could respond, he felt the familiar flutter of something in the air again, a soft rustling as if something or someone was nearby. It was the same feeling he'd experienced earlier. His eyes darted around, but all he saw were students chatting and practicing.

"You okay?" Jaden asked, noticing Harry's distracted look.

"I don't know," Harry murmured, his senses on high alert. "It's like something's—hovering around me."

Jaden just shrugged, completely unfazed. "Ah, you're probably just getting used to the island. It's got a weird vibe sometimes."

But Harry couldn't shake the feeling. It was as if something was watching him, something beyond the ordinary. It almost felt… familiar, in a way, like the distant flutter of wings. It reminded him of the way his magic had once felt—alive, connected, powerful.

"Let's head to class," Syrus suggested, looking at Harry with a mix of curiosity and concern. "We've got a lesson soon. I can show you around if you want."

"Sure," Harry said, his thoughts still lingering on the strange feeling that had yet to fade.

The trio walked through the bustling corridors of Duel Academy, Harry still adjusting to the pace of everything. Syrus was giving Harry the occasional glance, as though trying to make sure he wasn't too overwhelmed. Jaden, ever the energetic guide, bounced ahead, greeting students with waves and high-fives as they passed.

"Over here!" Jaden called, waving them over to a nearby group of Slifer Reds hanging out near one of the open courtyards. A few of them were practicing with their Duel Disks, while others were chatting about their latest duels.

"These are some of my Slifer Red buddies," Jaden said proudly, motioning toward a few familiar faces. One of them, a tall, lanky boy with messy brown hair, gave a nod in Harry's direction.

"Hey, new guy!" the tall guy said with a friendly grin. "Welcome to the red squad. You'll get used to this place, trust me."

"Thanks," Harry said with a small smile, feeling a little more at ease.

"Don't let the jacket fool you," the tall boy continued. "We might be the lowest tier, but we know how to throw down. You're in good hands."

Syrus looked at Harry with a nervous smile. "Yeah, we may not be as polished as the higher-ranked students, but we've got heart."

Before Harry could respond, another voice interrupted from behind them.

"Heart doesn't win duels!" a deep, mocking voice called out.

The trio turned to see a group of students from Ra Yellow strutting over. One of them, a tall, muscular boy with a sharp look in his eye, walked ahead with a smirk plastered on his face. He wore a custom Yellow blazer that contrasted with the typical Ra Yellow uniforms, signaling his "bully" persona. His outfit was a perfect reflection of the ruthless attitude he carried with his 'Bully Type' deck—no defense, just brute force and attack.

"Well, well, if it isn't the Slifer Reds!" the tall boy sneered, his eyes scanning the group with a sense of superiority. "And the new guy, huh?"

Jaden didn't seem at all bothered by the snide remark, though Syrus shrank back a little, clearly uncomfortable in the face of the higher-tier students.

"Relax, guys," Jaden said casually. "We're just having a chat."

"I can see that," the tall boy replied, his eyes narrowing at Jaden. "I just thought it was cute, watching you try to teach your new friend how to fit in."

"Not today, Hurt," a new voice cut in, and everyone turned to see another figure walking toward them. This one was a little shorter than the others, but still had a confident air about him. He wore an Obelisk Blue jacket, his sharp eyes giving off an almost predatory vibe.

Hurt's smirk deepened as the new guy approached. "Oh? You think you can teach me something, Klaus?"

The Obelisk Blue student—Klaus, apparently—didn't flinch at the challenge. He simply shook his head and folded his arms. "I'm not here for that. I'm here to make sure you don't turn the academy into your personal playground. You and your 'Bully Type' deck need to learn there's more to dueling than just brute force."

Hurt's eyes flashed with anger, but he quickly regained his composure. He turned his attention back to Harry. "So you're the new kid, huh? I bet you've got some weak deck. All Slifer Reds have weak decks."

Jaden bristled, but Harry held up a hand to stop him. "Maybe it's not about the deck. Maybe it's about the duelist."

Hurt raised an eyebrow, his lips curling into a smirk. "Well, let's see if you can back that up." He stepped forward, leaning into Harry's personal space. "You'll get a taste of real dueling when you face me. No tricks. No defenses. Just raw power."

Harry wasn't sure what to make of Hurt's confidence, but the challenge was clear. He wasn't going to let someone talk down to him, especially not in a world where dueling meant everything.

"You wanna duel me, huh?" Harry asked, narrowing his eyes. "Fine by me."

"No here kid... Not yet, I'll contact you on your PDA!" Hurt said with a smirk.

The Slifer Red Dorm – Late Evening

The dining room of the Slifer Red Dorm hummed with the usual sounds of students talking and laughing, the walls decorated with posters and banners that gave it a lived-in, homey feel. The mismatched furniture and cluttered tables were a reminder that this wasn't the fanciest dorm, but it was a place where everyone could be themselves. It was chaotic, but in a comfortable way.

Harry sat at one of the long tables, picking at his food. A few of the Slifer Reds sat nearby, chatting about their latest duels and making jokes. The room was warm, the air thick with the chatter and clatter of dishes.

"Hey, Harry!" Jaden's voice called from across the room, breaking Harry out of his thoughts.

Harry glanced over to see Jaden grinning, waving as he helped himself to more food at a nearby table. "You gonna stick around? We're all hanging out after dinner."

Harry gave a small smile and shook his head. "Nah, I think I'll head to my room. Get settled in."

"Aw, come on!" Jaden called out, but Harry had already started to rise from the table. "You sure? We're just getting started!"

"Yeah, I'll catch you later," Harry said, grabbing his tray and walking out.

The noise of the common room faded behind him as he stepped into the hallway, heading toward his room. The weight of the day settled on him as he walked, feeling the exhaustion creeping in. He was still getting used to this world—still adjusting to everything—and he figured a quiet night in his dorm was what he needed.

When he reached his room, he dropped his bag on the bed and sat down, staring around at the empty, plain space. It was his, though. For the first time since arriving, Harry felt like he could take a breath. There was a lot ahead of him, but for now, the quiet was welcome.

The Slifer Red Dorm – Later That Night

The dorm was quieter now. Most of the students had either retired to their rooms or were winding down for the night. Harry sat on his bed, a book in hand, but his mind wasn't really on the pages. His thoughts kept drifting back to the duel he'd had earlier with Professor 13, and the strange feeling that had followed him all day. Even now, as the quiet of the dorm settled in, that same sense of unease lingered.

He rubbed his eyes and put the book aside, figuring it was time to sleep. But just as he was about to get up and turn off the light, a soft ping echoed from his PDA.

Harry frowned and picked up the device from his desk. The screen lit up, displaying a new message.

Hurt: You think you've got what it takes, Slifer? Prove it. I'll be waiting for you by the dueling arena. Midnight. Don't be late.

A chill ran down Harry's spine. Hurt's name was one he had heard spoken with disdain, but the challenge was clear. He was being called out.

Harry glanced at the clock—it was just past 11:30 PM. He hadn't expected a duel tonight, especially not with someone like Hurt. The message didn't give him much time to think, but there was no backing down now. The Slifer Reds were known for their pride, and Harry wasn't going to let some Ra Yellow bully mock him.

He sat for a moment, considering his options, before standing up with resolve. He grabbed his Duel Disk, strapping it to his wrist. With one last look around the dimly lit room, he stepped into the hallway.

The campus was eerily quiet as Harry made his way across the grounds. The moonlight bathed the area in a cold, silvery glow. The academy's usual buzz of activity had faded, leaving only the occasional rustle of wind through the trees. Harry's footsteps were the only sound as he walked toward the dueling arena.

The arena was far from the gleaming, state-of-the-art facilities that the Obelisk Blue students might use. It was an open, outdoor space, the cracked pavement and overgrown grass giving it a forgotten, almost desolate feel.

As Harry approached, he spotted Hurt standing at the center of the arena. The yellow of his custom blazer seemed to glow in the moonlight, his posture exuding an air of smug confidence. He had been waiting for Harry, and from the look on his face, he wasn't about to waste time.

"Well, well, look who decided to show up!" Hurt called out, his voice dripping with mockery. He eyed Harry with a smirk, clearly enjoying the feeling of superiority.

Harry, not wanting to show any sign of hesitation, stepped forward and activated his Duel Disk. "I'm here. Let's get this over with."

Hurt's smirk deepened as he took a few steps toward Harry. "Don't rush me, kid. I've got a lot to teach you."

Harry felt the weight of the challenge settle on his shoulders. There was no backing down now. The tension in the air grew thicker as both boys stood there, ready for the duel to begin.

"DUEL/DUEL!" Harry and Hurt shout out their duel disks activating as they shout together!

"I'll take the first turn," Harry said, drawing his opening hand as the duel began.

Hurt's smug smile was glowing as he gazed down at the cards in his hands. His custom yellow blazer barely moved as he shifted in his seat, leaning back confidently, his eyes narrowing with malice. The Duel Disk on his arm flickered with lights, reflecting the cold grin on his face as he prepared to launch his offensive.

In his hand, three cards: two from his first turn, Guardian of the Patron Star & Lightwarden Familiar and an entirely new card; the card... Lily's Sacrifice stare back up at him... "Your Lucky kid, Academy Officers don't like late-night duels... Lucky for you!" Hurt continues saying, his duel disk deactivating, and with a speed unseen, he's gone... vanished into the forest... and Harry, he left in the opposite direction!

DUEL CONCLUSION:

TIE (No Victor)

Back inside the confines of the Red Dorm, Harry felt calmer... especially after duelling in a risky duel; he should read up on why night duels are banned... but before he could do so, Harry pulled the Card from the sleeve of his red blazer... Lily's Sacrifice is a card that shouldn't exist... but one of the last images of...

"HEY HARRY!" Jaden's voice shouts, cutting through Harry's thoughts, his frantic pounding of his fists on his door.

"It's open..." Harry says, slipping the card back into the sleeve of his Blazer, he didn't want to return it to his deck... not yet.

"Hey, I had a duel with one of the Obelisk Blues; his name was Chazz... and I would have won if not campus security came in to stop us... Hey, you should have seen it, Harry... Harry?" Jaden's soft voice asks, not knowing that Harry has fallen asleep...

"Well, it is late... Good ni..." Jaden begins to say, noticing the card slip from Harry's sleeve.

"What's this?" Jaden adds picking up the card... "Lily's Sacrifice an odd named card... but it is cool looking..." Jaden says, slipping the card into Harry's deck that sits on the desk next to his duel disk. Jaden leaves, not noticing that Winged Kuriboh has left his card and has started to hover in his spirit form... he hovers over Harry's deck of cards... cooing softly...
