"Buffy! It's so late, I was getting worried. Wait, is that blood? Are you hurt?" This was what Joyce always dreaded, her daughter coming home injured, bleeding…
"I'm fine, mom, it's just a scratch, no biggie. Bit of a tussle with a couple of Varok Demons. They have these really long claws, kinda like knives, and you don't wanna hear about that. Sorry."
Joyce shook her head. "Don't be sorry, I'm the one who asked to know more about what you do, I need to learn how to handle being the Slayer's mom. It's just, sometimes it's hard. I worry about you, I hate the thought of you getting hurt, or worse. It's a mom thing."
"Hey, I don't like the getting hurt part either, it isn't fun, but it really is just a scratch, see?" Buffy lifted the edge of her shirt so her mom could see the cut; it was already healing. "Always looks worse when all you can see are the bloodstains. You know how blood spreads on anything absorbent, like clothes."
"Yes, I know, and I'm overreacting again. Sorry. I just want you to be safe."
"I know, but it's okay. I know what I'm doing."
