Chapter 621 Jax Talks Truth
"
Scarlett had crushed it with the guys and her awards ceremony. It was absolutely perfect capturing the right joking tone that poked fun at everyone without causing hurt feelings. He was proud of her something he never felt when he was with Wendy.
He still couldn't believe he'd been foolish enough to marry Wendy. Being lonely and getting tired of the endless rotation of girls in his bed wasn't reason enough to marry a woman he barely knew without thinking things through. She didn't have the ability to lead the way a VP and future president's old lady needed to lead. Scarlett had opened his eyes to what an old lady of his should be like.
Once they were at Scarlett's van, he turned to face her.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I am an idiot and that whole punishing you was just stupid and wrong."
"Does that mean I'm no longer being punished?"
"Never again."
She stood on tiptoe and kissed him gently not sure how his injuries would be affected if she put her arms around him.
"I am so damned proud of you. Your awards ceremony was perfect. The guys loved it. Now I know why you were so busy on your phone."
"I was coming up with award ideas based on what the guys were saying."
He rested his hands on her hips and kissed her as deep as his heavily bruised ribs allowed.
"That's enough," Scarlett said gently, putting her hand between them. "I know how bad the guys got hurt, but how bad are you hurt? I know about the stitches in your leg and arm and your scrapes, but I know there's more."
"They thought I broke a couple of ribs, but they're just bruised. You know all the rest. Most of the guys bruised or broke some ribs too."
"All this from a white pick-up truck," Scarlett said shaking her head. He knew from the way she was looking at him that she didn't buy the white pick-up truck story.
"You've been good long enough," he said kissing her cheek. "You didn't ask any questions, but it's time I give you answers but this stays between us and you can tell your father because I know he won't tell anyone."
"So what really happened?"
"That son of a bitch Mickey Smith lost control of his fancy new Harley and plowed down the MC. It was crazy. We were scrambling to get out of his way and trying not to hit each other. That's how we all went down."
"At least it wasn't an attack from another MC."
Jax grinned.
"Leave it to you to find a bright side to the club getting run over by that mother fucker Mickey Smith. When I got up, all I could think about was making sure everyone was OK and coming up with a cover story that wouldn't leave the club humiliated."
"The white pick-up story. I get it now. The MC would never live it down if it got out that one of its riders caused the worst accident in SOA history."
"Yeah."
"What about the cuts? I noticed you weren't wearing them at the hospital."
"I didn't want any of them to get lost while we were getting treated and I thought it best to downplay our MC affiliation. Thanks for not asking about them in the hospital."
"I knew there was a good reason and I know not to ask questions like that."
"The cops never caught on to the outlaw biker angle. We need the police report for insurance purposes, but I don't think the cops will do much about finding the pick-up driver. There's so damned much real crime in the state that never gets any attention, we'll fall through the cracks."
"Just another advantage of the high crime rate in Cali," Scarlett said cheerfully. "At least Charming is protected."
"Yeah, it is."
"Thanks to the MC," Scarlett said giving Jax another kiss.
"Ummm . . ." he said appreciatively, "you're making me wish I wasn't spending the night with the guys."
"You do know that with your bruised ribs, you're looking at a couple of weeks of rest only in bed."
"What?" Jax stared at Scarlett unable or unwilling to believe his ears.
"You heard me. You are out of action for a couple of weeks until your ribs are better."
"Have I told you lately how beautiful and sexy you are?" he gave her a look that melted normal women, but Scarlett was Scarlett. She wasn't melting.
"Say all the pretty words you want, but you have a couple of weeks of healing. Your mind is always willing, but you are too injured you just can't admit it yet."
Jax was beginning to ache. He would have to take a pain killer when he went into the clubhouse.
"You're right," he said with a sigh. There would be a time to persuade Scars to change her mind and this wasn't it.
"So what happened to Mickey? Did he disappear?"
"Before EMS got there, Piney and Sack punched him. They were the only two capable of doing it. I had Sack kick Mickey's ass down the hill away from where Tig landed. I don't know what kind of condition he was in. Once Happy, Tig and Clay were loaded into ambulances the rest of us left in the van and went to the hospital. We took his cut and banned him from the clubhouse. Rolled his bike down the hill too."
Scarlett laughed.
"Did Sack really kick his ass down the hill?"
"Literally. Gave him a hard boot to the butt."
"He's lucky you didn't do worse to him."
"Yeah, he is."
"Do you want me to come with you to see Clay tomorrow?"
"Would you mind?"
"Of course not. Just give me a call when you're ready to leave."
"Thank you for everything today."
"You're welcome."
As Jax headed into the clubhouse he couldn't shake the feeling that Scarlett's reaction to the news about Mickey Smith was odd. He couldn't put his finger on what didn't feel right.
Later, he'd find out more about what was up with Scarlett.
