I don't own ATLA
It all started with a phone call.
It was afterschool and Sokka was at home alone and was bored. Usually he had football practice or basketball but both were cancelled for the evening. There was no one to hang out with either. His young friend Aang had lacrosse practice so he could not come over. Toph had boxing around this time and his best friend Zuko has been avoiding him lately. Avoiding might not be the right word. Zuko and Sokka had been friends since they were thirteen. Zuko, heir to the Agni Flame company, used to be a stuck up boy. They used to get into a lot of arguments and he used to call him and his friends names because they were poor. He also only hung around his sister Azula and her friends, Ty Lee who was now head cheerleader and Mai, his on and off girlfriend. The group used to think they were better than everyone else. They bullied the less financially stabled kids. Zuko always had a chip on his shoulder because of his family wealth. However, one day Zuko stopped coming to school, this went on for a month. When he returned he was as bald as Aang and had a nasty flame burn on his left side. This privileged kid also had an angry attitude. Before he was just conceited but that changed to a young teen lashing out at the world. Sokka through magazines, which he claims to read for the recipes even though he can't cook, found out what happened. Zuko apparently was disowned by his father. He no longer was the heir to Agni Flame and his sister, Azula was instead. His girlfriend, Mai, also dumped him, though Sokka could tell it was because he was very angry at the world and she couldn't handle his attitude. Sokka could not wait to make fun of him for losing his status, which caused both boys a week suspension after a fight they had.
Sokka never thought after that suspension that he would steer clear of Zuko so his father would not have to worry about him. Sokka and his sister, Katara lived with their grandmother. His father had to travel for work and could not be home all the time to take care of them. Their mother was also dead, this effected Katara a lot. Their gran gran had to put her into therapy because her nightmares came back, as she was the one who witnessed their mothers death when she was four. She only started therapy at age ten and has been going to it ever since. When Sokka came home from practice he was shocked and angry to find Zuko at their kitchen table. Before a fight could erupt, Katara stated that he was HER guest. Sokka was confused on why she would invite Zuko, the same Zuko who used to bully them. Katara stated that everyone needed a second chance, she was eleven at that time.
As Katara brought Zuko more along the gang, Sokka had found a friend in him. He also learned a lot about him too. Zuko now lived with his uncle, who used to be a ruthless business owner and ceo of their family company until his son was killed by someone that used to do business with him. Iroh, gave up his position and instead chose to use some of his wealth to build a tea shop which was very popular to this day. Iroh did not take much money because he earned that money from shady business deals. He only took enough for his tea shop which was located below his shack house by the beach. His uncle took Zuko in when his family threw Zuko out. Though Sokka never found out how he got his burn, or about his family, he did have a friend and rival. Katara was the one who convinced Zuko to try out for the basketball team. Now he was co-captain along with Sokka, the two were unstoppable on the court.
Zuko could also break dance, surf and knew martial arts. Sokka would never have thought the same spoiled kid and him would become friends these past three years. They even had cactus juice when celebrating their big win. His grandmother, Katara and Iroh were upset but they let it go as the boys went viral after drinking the wine. Their family thought the video of them acting as fools was enough punishment for their drinking; it got even worse when Iroh approved their video to be shown at schools on why teenagers should not drink. As Sokka was musing about his friends he heard a familiar tune and picked up his cell phone when he saw it was Aang.
"Hey Aang, aren't you supposed to be in lacrosse?"
"Sokka, this is important, I think Katara has a new boyfriend."
"Aang, that's funny, Katara doesn't even have time for a boyfriend and trust me as her brother, I would know."
"Sokka, haven't you noticed anything different about Katara, look closely at her." Aang sighed. "Listen I have to go, but when you notice what im talking about we should find out who her boyfriend is."
Aang then hung up the phone while an amused Sokka laughed. "As if Katara has a boyfriend, she's too young."
When Katara was thirteen she discovered boys, she had a crush on the schools other "bad boy" besides Zuko, a boy named Jet. Sokka never found out if Jet was his real name but his sister was so infatuated with the boy. She would follow him around and make him gifts. It was none of Sokkas concern since the other boy did not notice her, until one day, he did. Sokka never was overprotective of his sister until the night she snuck out and went somewhere with Jet. Jet and his group apparently got into a fight with another and Katara was with them. Sokka only knew where to find them because Zuko had been keeping an eye on Jet. Jet was known to get into fights with other people, Zuko included, but Sokka never really thought it was a big deal until his sister was involved.
Sokka and Zuko was able to make it to where the fight was held and was able to get Katara before the cops came. He guessed Jet and his group managed to get away because they were in school the next day. After that Sokka has never felt so scared to lose his sister, that's when the protectiveness happed. Sokka realized that without their mom, and with their dad being away so much, it was his job to be the man of the house. He started telling Katara what she could wear, what time to come home and who she should not talk too. However Katara was outraged and claimed he had no control over her life. He just never wanted to hear his sister cry again. Like the time they came home after everything with Jet where she cried until the next morning, in his arms. Jet was her first love and Sokka found out, her first kiss too. Both Sokka and Zuko never liked Jet even more after what he did to Katara.
The next boy Katara liked was a quiet kid named Haru. Sokka supposed Haru was handsome but he was so forgettable, that he didn't notice when him and Katara started dating. It however, did not last long. Sokka learned from Suki, his girlfriend, that Katara found him to be nice but that all he was. They only dated for two weeks.
Aang was Katara's last and longest boyfriend. Aang, even though he was too years younger than her, was in love with his sister. Sokka approved of their relationship because he knew his friend was a good kid who would not hurt her. That relationship lasted two months and Katara was the one who ended it. She only saw Aang as a friend and knew he was not the one for her. Sokka had another person crying in his lap that day when Aang told him what she said.
Sokka never seen Katara in love, the closest could have been Aang but other than those three boys, Katara remained single. Sokka knew what love was, he was in love with his girlfriend Suki the two were good friends before they acted on their feelings. Sokka heard the door open and he assumed it was Katara getting home from her practice. What Sokka did not expect was the two green pom poms, which only their schools cheerleaders had.
"Hey Katara, I think you picked up someone else's bag." Sokka said when he took out one of the pomp oms.
"No, I didn't, you are now looking at the new member of the cheer squad." Katara smiled while preparing their dinner.
"You, a cheerleader?!" Sokka exclaimed. "I thought you hated them."
"I don't really hate them, but I wanted to try out something new." Katara blushed.
"But don't you have volleyball practice, how can you do that and cheer?"
"Well, how do you manage football and basketball?"
"That's because I'm the star of both teams, so they made adjustments for me." Sokka smirked.
"Isn't Zuko also the star on one of those teams?"
"So what, it still doesn't explain you cheering."
"Well now I can support you and Zuko at your games." Katara smiled.
Sokka observed Katara as she sat their dinner on the table. He started noticing things.
"When did you stop wearing your hair in a braid?" For the longest time Katara wore her hair in a long braid, but this time her hair was opened.
"Just trying out something new." Katara blushed.
"Ok…" Sokka started eating his meal when he noticed something in her ears. "When did you get your ears pierced?"
Katara played with the gold earring with a red center. "Recently."
The earrings looked expensive; Sokka assumed she saved up money from working at Iroh's shop from time to time.
Katara then started humming and gave a litter giggle as she read a text on her phone.
Sokkas eyes widened. He knew that goofy look; he sports it whenever he was with Suki.
Katara was in love.
