"Who're you going to the ball with?" Ron asked suddenly, hoping to catch Hermione off guard with the question as they sat in front of the fire in the Gryffindor common room.
"None of your business," Hermione replied airily, enjoying the look of annoyance that passed over Ron's face. He'd been asking her this question over and over, desperate for an answer.
"Hermione, it's okay. You can admit to us that you haven't got a date for the ball," stated Ron confidently. "You can still come with Harry and me. As friends, obviously," he added quickly, flushing a dull pink.
"I have a date, Ronald Weasley," Hermione snapped. "In forty-eight hours, I'll be accepting your apologies."
Hermione got up and stormed off to the girls' dormitories, slamming the door behind her so hard that the paintings on the wall of the common room rattled.
"She hasn't got a date," Ron confidently said to Harry. "Has she?"
Harry just shrugged.
Christmas day arrived and Hermine spent a pleasant morning, free of questions about who she was going to the ball with, with Harry and Ron. After lunch Hermione watched the Weasley's and Harry have a snowball fight in the castle grounds. It was bitterly cold out and Hermione was glad to tell her friends she was going back inside to get ready for the ball at five o'clock. Predictably, Ron yelled after her asking who she was going to the ball with. Hermione ignored his question and just waved, enjoying immensely the thud of Ron being hit by a snowball for his lapse of attention to their game.
She made her way up to her dorm to collect her things. Lavender and Parvarti were already in their dorm getting ready. They let out a screech of excitement when Hermione walked in.
"Getting ready with us?" Parvarti asked.
"No, I said I'd get ready with Ginny," Hermione replied. "She's the only one in her year going."
"Oh, okay. Probably best," Lavender answered, dabbing what was, in Hermione's opinion, an excessive amount of blusher onto her cheeks. "I know looking glamorous and pretty isn't your thing. We'd probably bore you with all the makeup and accessories talk."
"Right," Hermione said, trying not to stare at the clown red cheeks Lavender had given herself with the blusher. "Well, have fun."
Hermione joined Ginny in her dorm. The other third year girls were all crammed on the edge of the bed opposite Ginny's, watching wistfully as Hermione and Ginny did each other's makeup.
"There," Ginny said, setting down the makeup brush with a flourish. "You look stunning."
"You don't think it's too much?" Hermione asked anxiously, looking in the mirror.
"You look beautiful," the third years assured her.
Sitting side by side in front of the mirror Hermione and Ginny began to work on their hair, Hermione working a liberal amount of Sleekeazy's Hair Potion into her bushy brown hair. She was amazed at how straight and smooth and shiny her hair became. She took another liberal amount of the hair potion and worked it into the hair on the back of her head this time. A third handful of hair potion was worked into the other side. With the help of the third years watching on, Hermione rubbed more potion into her hair to the bits that had been missed. Her arms ached by the time she was done but the transformation of her hair astonished her.
Gone was her thick mass of bushy hair, and in its place were sleek, brown, shining locks that hung down past her shoulder blades. She felt her confidence rise as she gazed at herself in the mirror. Looking back at her was a beautiful young woman. The makeup Ginny had done for her accentuated and drew attention to her features. She looked beautiful and for the first time in forever, she felt beautiful.
"Wow," Ginny breathed from beside her, having finished putting up her own hair.
"Thanks," Hermione said shyly, blushing slightly as she picked up her brush and began the process of putting her hair up into an elegant knot. She used a little more of the Sleekeazy Hair Potion to smooth down some stray hairs.
"None of the attention is going to be on Krum tonight," Ginny said admiringly. "If I didn't know it was you, I almost wouldn't recognise you. You should do that more often to your hair," Ginny added. "You look so happy and confident with it smoothed out."
"Oh, I think it's too much to do every day," answered Hermione. "My arms were aching after putting all the potion through my hair."
"You'd better get a move on," Ginny told her. "If you're going to slip down to the Durmstang ship without being seen."
"Oh goodness," Hermione exclaimed, looking at her watch. "I didn't realise I'd taken so long with my hair."
Hermione stood up and slipped into her dress robes. They were a beautiful, delicate shade of pink in a light and floaty fabric, and complemented Hermione's complexion wonderfully. But no formal outfit would be complete with some accessories. Hermione's favourite cousin, TicTac, had sent her a necklace, with a matching bracelet and earrings, for Christmas to wear with her dress.
"Oh, that's gorgeous," Ginn gushed, watching Hermione put on the silver necklace with a rose quartz butterfly, and the matching silver bracelet and earrings. "You look almost perfect."
"Almost perfect?" Hermione quizzed.
"We just need to do your nails to match. Nothing too bright. We don't want to detract from you. But a delicate shade of rose pink with silver tips will compliment your jewellery."
Hermione smiled as she took her wand and did as Ginny suggested.
She stood in front of the mirror when she was done and gasped. She did look beautiful. And what was more, she felt beautiful and confident too, for the first time in forever.
