True to her word, Charlotte brought Allie and Jack home several hours after they had left. They found Nathan and Elizabeth curled up on the couch.
Allie could barely contain herself, as soon as they walked in the door, "WELL?!"
"Well, what?" Jack asked.
Nathan and Elizabeth were beaming, and Elizabeth pulled her hand up and showed off her new ring. Allie flew over to the couch and launched herself into both Nathan and Elizabeth's waiting arms.
"What's happening?" Jack was still confused as to why Allie was so excited.
Elizabeth pulled herself out of Allie's embrace and walked over to Jack.
"Well, honey bear. Mountie Nathan and I are engaged to be married. How does that sound to you?"
Realization hit Jack. He gave his mom a hug, then walked over to Nathan and Allie. He seemed a little unsure, "Mountie Nathan, does that mean…will you be my daddy?"
Nathan fought the tears that were starting to form in his eyes. He first glanced at Elizabeth and then Charlotte, both gave him a nod.
"It does Jack, and I would bd honored if you would like to call me dad or daddy."
"Just like Allie?"
"Yeah, just like Allie, kiddo."
"Yay!" At that Jack threw himself up into Nathan and Allie's arms.
Charlotte put an arm around Elizabeth. "Congratulations Lizzie. He's a good man, I couldn't ask for a better man to watch over you and little Jack."
"Thank you, Charlotte."
Charlotte walked over to Nathan and shook his hand. "Congratulations Nate, thank you for watching over my family for me and for my son." She shared a smile with Nathan. "Now it has been a long day, so I think I will leave you all to celebrate as a family."
They all said their goodnight to Charlotte as she headed off to bed.
"Can we read a story together?" Jack asked.
"Of course, let me get the book we've been reading." Elizabeth said as she walked over to the bookshelf.
Jack scooted into Nathan's lap and Allie leaned up against her dad. Elizabeth wished she owned a camera right then, there on the settee sat her entire heart. She brought Jack's book over and snuggled up beside Allie. Nathan glanced over to her as she began to read, and they shared a look of complete contentment.
Once story time was done and Allie and Jack were in bed, Nathan and Elizabeth basked in each other's company.
"So, when should we tell them about Hope Valley?"
"I'll call Faith tomorrow morning and find out more about the details. Nathan, I can't believe it, it feels almost too good to be true, with all the setbacks we've had in the last year."
"But with the setbacks, have been miracles and love too." Nathan reminded her as he held her tight.
"You're right. So…"
"So?"
"You know one of the first questions I'm going to get from Rosemary when we chat next, is when are we making this official?" Elizabeth chuckled.
"Well, if it were up to me, we'd go to the courthouse tomorrow morning, which is convenient since I work right next to it."
Elizabeth laughed, "Do you know I actually suggested eloping to both Jack and Lucas?"
"Really?!" Nathan shot an eyebrow up, "And both were able to resist taking you up on that offer? Sweetheart, one word from you, and we'll be halfway there."
"Nathan Grant," Elizabeth playfully swatted his arm. "I can't deny it's a tempting thought, but I'd like to have at least a small ceremony, so Allie and Jack can be a part of it."
"Not to mention escaping the ire of Rosemary, I'd imagine." Nathan laughed.
"There's that too, I'm going to have to work hard to keep her from turning this into a big affair."
Nathan paled at the thought.
"How big are talking?" Nathan asked with trepidation.
"Nothing big, I think I'd rather like a small ceremony."
"Will you be wearing that dress I saw you in several years ago?"
"That puff ball, no, Nathan. That dress was awful."
"Elizabeth, you aways look beautiful in anything you wear. If only I knew then that the next time you'd be wearing a wedding dress, you'd actually be walking to me." Nathan paused.
Elizabeth looked up at him, "Nathan, I'm sorry, I'm sorry it took me so long to figure my heart out."
"No more sorries Elizabeth. This was our path, I truly believe that. You weren't ready to open your heart to me then. I don't know we'd be here now if we had tried to make a go of this back then. And darling, there is nowhere else I'd rather be."
With that, he drew her up in his arms and got lost in kissing his fiancée.
