Chapter 6
If Ash was expecting a grand adventure to happen straight away after crossing the borders into Johto, he was sorely mistaken. In fact, the two Pokémon Trainers were walking through the woods, and at a familiar scene – they were lost. Without a map between them, they were forced to rely on themselves for directions; which led to a lot of arguing between the two. Not only that, but as they walked farther into the woods, fog formed and was getting thicker and thicker by the footstep.
Stopping to catch a break, Ash stretched his arms up high. There was a slight lapse in the fog that provided vision to their surroundings, and as his eyes traveled upward, a strange branch over the top of the path caught his eye. The branch was thick as it reached across to its fellow tree on the other side of the path, but what really drew the eye in was the large hole that was hollowed out near the top. "Hey, that branch looks familiar..." he murmured, mostly to himself.
But Gary, who was standing just some distance behind him, heard this and glanced up at the aforementioned branch, and his eyes widened slightly. "You've got to be kidding! Are you trying to say we've been going around in circles?!"
"If you're so smart, why don't you lead the way?!" Ash spat angrily. "I don't see you in the front!"
"Only because you insisted on being in front!" Gary shot back.
"Sorry, I thought you weren't used to roughing it because you always had your cheerleaders drive you around!"
"At least they were better navigators than you!"
Ash's teeth ground together in anger, and he stomped on the ground while tightening his fingernails into his palms. "I'll show you how good of a navigator I am!" he yelled, and stomped off the path they had been following and through the branches and smaller foliage in front of him.
"Ash! Stop!" Gary called after him, and hurried so he wouldn't lose the black-haired boy in the dense fog. But Ash had stopped, and was looking down with his mouth open. A breath of air escaped his lungs, and Gary soon saw what the other Pallet Town Trainer was gawking at.
The land they were walking on dropped down a steep slope, and at the very bottom was a small lake. In the middle of the lake, a circular rock rose from the water – almost like a mossy-covered pedestal. And sitting on top of this rocky perch was a quadruped creature that was shimmering brightly like a crystal. It was shining so brightly that they couldn't tell exactly what it looked like, but that it had a long, flowing mane and two ribbon-like tails trailing out on either side of its body.
"It's a Pokémon..." Gary breathed as quietly as he could.
"It is...?" Ash asked rhetorically, blinking in the bright light. Apparently, the Pokémon heard this, and it turned its head towards them. Its red eyes looked directly at the pair before it turned its body and leapt from its perch over the water majestically, and landed on the grass before giving one last hop like a horse and disappearing amongst the trees. "Wait! Come back!"
"A-Ash!" Gary exclaimed, running after the younger boy who went running after the Pokémon. But in his haste, Ash seemed to have forgotten that they were at the edge of a very steep slope, and soon both of them were tumbling down the hill, the grass staining his jeans until they skidded to a stop on their backs just seconds before falling into the lake. "Ash?"
"Yeah?"
"I hate you."

Just when it seemed like they – and their legs – had given up all hope, they finally managed to make it out of the forest. The fog had since cleared up since the departure of the mysterious crystal Pokémon in the woods, which led to a more pleasant travel. But now it was to the point that Ash was crawling around on his hands and knees, with his legs giving out under him but wanting a break.
"I don't think... I can go much farther..." Gary muttered breathlessly.
But as they stepped out of the woods, it was Ash who saw the arrow-shaped sign at the edge of a ledge. Instantly, his face lit up as his eyes took in the words. "Hey, look at what that sign says!" he said happily.
"New Bark Town!" the auburn-haired Trainer stated with more relief in his voice than he wanted. The town – which was much, much bigger than Pallet Town – laid out past the ledge.
Now that their destination was in sight, Ash could feel the strength pouring back into him, and he jumped to his feet and swung a fist through the air. "All right!"
"Hey, I wonder what that Pokémon was back there..." Gary murmured in thought, his eyes glancing back into the heavily wooded area they had just climbed out of. It wasn't too far out that the lake was at, and neither of them saw any other sign of it.
"Oh, yeah..." Ash agreed, pondering on the thought of it. But beside him, Gary dismissed the thought and leaned down to further read the sign.
"'New Bark Town – this way to the town where the winds of new beginnings blow'," he read, and then a smirk traveled along his face. "And this is the first step in the Johto League."
Ash stepped up to the edge of the cliff and overlooked the town. The wind tussled his dark locks softly and gently, and a faint smile curled his lips. Where winds of new beginnings blow... I can almost hear the crowd at my first Johto League match. Pulling in a deep breath of fresh air, he clenched his fists at his side and let out a mighty yell. "Yeah! I'm ready!"
"Hey, calm down, will 'ya, Ash?" Gary said in surprise, jumping back a bit from his traveling companion's sudden yell.
"The journey starts right now!" Ash responded, and then pointed a finger high in the air. "Look out Johto League; we're on our way!" But before the boy could run off, a single hand reached out and snatched the boy's collar. The air hitched in his throat from suddenly being cut off, and he made a gagging sound.
"Ash, aren't you forgetting something? We need to register for the Johto League, remember?"
Ash's limbs fell as if giving up, and his lips peeled back from his teeth. "Oh, yeah, that's right." Assuming the same pose with his finger in the air, he shouted once again. "Look out, Johto League; we're gonna register!" Then, he turned to Gary and whispered, "Do you have any cash in case they charge a fee?" Ash's rival stumbled at the stupidity of the comment, but quickly recovered and glared at him.
"There's no fee, numskull! You just sign up at the Pokémon Center!" he barked, and walked past Ash so they could begin their trail down the mountain. "Honestly, I don't know how Brock put up with the clown act with you..."

Compared to Pallet Town, New Bark Town was a city. Full of lively people and many buildings, it seemed to be teetering on the edge of town. On the opposite edge of the spectrum, Pallet Town barely had enough residents in it to consider it a town, and was almost listed as a village. New Bark Town even had its own Pokémon Center which was located in the center of the town, and easily found.
Without a doubt the largest building in the community, it was easily distinguishable from the large lobby that made up most of the building's base, as it featured the top of a Poké Ball on its roof. A shell-like panel made up its backside and rose high above toward the sky, and a large 'P' was hung down from the tip that made it look as though it was floating above the cap of the Poké Ball. And finally, on either side was an opening for a parking garage.
As Ash and Gary walked in, the black-haired boy quietly wondered to himself if the Pokémon Centers in the Johto region would also be run by a Nurse Joy; a question which was quickly answered as they stepped through the front automatic doors and were greeted by a Chansey wearing a nurse's hat, and a familiar pink-haired nurse. "Welcome!" she greeted with a warm, welcoming smile and a slight bob of her head. Despite the fact the building was so large, there didn't seem to be too many people in the lobby waiting, and in the lull, Chansey was mopping the tiles. "How can I help you two today?"
"We're-" Ash began excitedly, but he was quickly cut off by Gary.
"We're here to register for the Johto League, ma'am," he said in a purposefully louder tone than Ash so that he could get the sentence out first. As Ash's mouth melted into a scowl, Nurse Joy nodded her head and stepped out from behind the counter.
"Of course! Please follow me," she instructed, and led them to a computer beside the counter. It was indented in the circular wall, and featured a panel below a large monitor. "Do you two have a Pokédex handy?"
"Yup!" Ash replied for them, and both him and his rival both produced their Pokédexes that Professor Oak had given them at dinner the night before they left Pallet. Nurse Joy took Gary's first, and inserted it into the drive. The red device disappeared into it, and the computer hummed as it took in the information. Soon, the monitor lit up above them, and an image of Gary's signature smirk appeared above them.
Nurse Joy typed a few keys into the keyboard, and soon a loading bar appeared at the bottom of the screen. "Gary Oak of Pallet Town..." the computer read, and once the loading bar filled completely, an 'O.K.' flashed across the screen. "Welcome to the Johto League." The computer spit out Gary's Pokédex, and Ash was next. She did the same thing, and Ash's picture appeared in Gary's place. "Ash Ketchum of Pallet Town..." It hummed and loaded the data taken from the Pokédex, and as with Gary's, an 'O.K.' flashed across the screen. "Welcome to the Johto League."
The pink-haired nurse took out Ash's Pokédex when it was spit out, and handed it to him. "Congratulations, Ash and Gary. You're both now fully-qualified and approved to become an official participant in the Johto League!"
"Great! Thanks, Nurse Joy," Ash thanked, taking his Pokédex back from her and placing it back in his jacket pocket.
"You'll need a copy of the Johto League guide book, so make sure you don't lose it," she said to them. She produced from a stack behind the counter a blue and yellow book and handed it forward, but Gary quickly snatched it up before his rival could take it.
"If we shouldn't lose it, Ash is the number-one person you don't want to give it to," he said with a smirk. "I'll hold onto this." The auburn-haired boy placed the book in his duffel bag and closed the mouth up tightly. "How many Badges do we have to win for this league?"
"Once you earn eight Badges, you'll be qualified to enter and participate in the Johto Championship," she answered, and her ocean blue eyes trailed to the ceiling as she thought. "I'd say the best place to start is the Violet Gym in Violet City!"
"Then that's where we'll go!" Ash decided with a large grin of determination.
"And where I'll win my next Badge," Gary smirked, side-eyeing Ash in the process.
"What's that supposed to mean?!"
"You two are very lucky," Nurse Joy observed, unknowingly cutting off an argument and grabbing their attention. "You both get to travel with someone who pushes you to be the best Pokémon Trainer you could possibly be."
"Him?" both Pallet Town Trainers said at the same time, pointing an accusing finger and letting a look of disgust cross their faces.
Nurse Joy chuckled sweetly and dipped her head before excusing herself. "Well, I guess we should call Gramps and let him know we made it here and are all registered," Gary decided. Ash agreed, and they went off to the side of the lobby where the lines of video phones were available. Gary sat in the seat and dialed in his grandfather's phone number. Within a few moments of ringing, Professor Oak's disgruntled face appeared on the screen.
"Hey there, Grandpa! What's up?" Gary greeted, and the gray-haired professor's face softened upon seeing who it was on the other side of the call.
"I'm doing just fine!" he smiled, and nodded at Ash who was waving over his rival's shoulder.
"We finally made it to New Bark Town!" Ash told him.
"That's excellent news! Are you two registered yet?"
"We just finished registering before we called you," Gary answered.
"And where will you be heading to first?"
"Nurse Joy recommended Violet City," Ash replied. Oak nodded in agreement.
"Sounds good," he said. "But while you two are in New Bark Town, you should visit an old student of mine that resides there. His name is Professor Elm, and while he is a bit of a chatterbox, he has a very vast knowledge of Pokémon – in fact, he specializes in unusual Pokémon abilities, which I think would be very fascinating to you, Gary."
"Sure. We can stop by before we leave," the younger Oak decided.
"Thanks for the recommendation, Professor," Ash added. And with a nod from the older man, the line was disconnected.

After getting directions from Nurse Joy, the pair made their way to Professor Elm's lab. It wasn't too far from the Pokémon Center, only about a fifteen minute walk with Nurse Joy's instructions. The Pokémon Lab – located on the north edge of New Bark Town – was similar to Professor Oak's lab in size, but looked more like a large school if anything. A large, square building with a large gate in the front of it and many Pokémon flags decorating the concrete posts outside spruced it up so it didn't look so dreary.
The building was weirdly quiet as they stepped forward to the front door, and despite the fact that it was a lab for Pokémon, there weren't many people around at all. But that wasn't completely out of the ordinary – while Professor Oak's lab was a lot more livelier because of the ever-growing Pokémon in his corral out back, he was the only one who worked there.
The front door wasn't automatic, so Gary approached it and knocked. They waited patiently to hear any sort of movement or voice on the other side, but none sounded at all. Once again, Gary knocked, and both sat in silence, but the result was the same. "That's weird. Do you think anyone is home?" Ash asked as they exchanged a glance.
"Maybe not..." Gary mused, and reached out and switched the door knob. Much to his surprise, it turned and clicked, and the door opened inward. "It's unlocked."
"Maybe we should go inside and make sure everything's okay," Ash suggested, and they both walked into the lab.
The foyer was completely wide open, and many machines and computers lined all four walls. Ash would never know what any of it could do, but some of them looked vaguely familiar, having seen some of them in both Professor Oak's and Ivy's labs. "Oh, Ethan... you're here early." A voice grabbed their attention, and they both glanced to the left of the room. Huddled against the wall with his legs tucked under a computer desk, a man with short, messy brown hair and thick glasses sitting upon his nose was staring at a computer screen and furiously typing away. The man didn't even flinch at their intrusion, and if Ash hadn't heard him speak up, he would have thought the man wouldn't even have known they were there.
"Uh, hello Professor-" Ash spoke up, but the scruffy-looking man cut him off with a voice that was nothing more than a faint drone.
"The Pokémon are somewhere in the lab... Not sure when the last time I saw them was, but I'm sure they could use some entertainment..." he muttered, barely audible over the clacking of keys.
Ash and Gary crossed confused glances with furrowed brows. "I'm amazed he even knows we're here..." Ash whispered to his rival. But Gary's focus was elsewhere.
"Do you feel that?" he asked. Ash blinked, but not wanting to speak his ignorance aloud, he stayed silent while Gary put his finger in his mouth and put the spit-covered appendage in the air. "There's a breeze."
"So? Maybe there's an open window. Seems like that's the only fresh air this guy gets..." Instead of replying, Gary stepped away from the front door and headed past the professor and toward the backside of the laboratory. "Wait! What are you doing?" But as they left the professor behind, they approached a sliding door in the back of the lab that led outside, and the door was open. "Oh, no!"
"Looks like the Pokémon aren't 'somewhere in the lab' anymore," Gary said with a frown.
"C'mon, we have to go find them!" Ash stated, determination pulling his eyebrows together as he pushed past Gary and headed outside. Gary followed after him, and they both walked out into the woods.
Finding something that one didn't know what they were looking for actually made it a lot more difficult than expected. But the back was so void of life that they knew that any sign of movement would be what they were looking for. "How many Pokémon do you think were in the lab, anyway?" Ash asked as he pushed a branch off to the side.
"If Professor Elm's lab is anything like my grandfather's, he'll have three Pokémon for any starting Pokémon Trainer," Gary mused. "A Grass-type, a Water-type, and a Fire-type."
"Oh, yeah!" Ash realized with a grin. "Hey, that's pretty smart!"
"It's common sense if you just use what's between your ears," Gary retorted. Ash's nostrils flared with anger, and his temper along with them, but a light grabbed their attention. A dancing, flickering orange glow. Moving through the trees and toward it, they saw a small clearing, and tucked against the rocks was a small red and yellow fire flickering brightly.
"Who just lights a campfire in the middle of the woods?" Ash asked, looking around. "I don't even see anyone's backpack or signs of camping back here."
"That's because that's no campfire," Gary realized, and knelt down. "Hey, little fella. Are you scared?" Ash watched silently as the fire shifted slightly, and what he thought was a moss-covered rock underneath the flames turned out to a body, and a head perked up and turned to Gary. The Pokémon had thin, squinted eyes, and a very long nose.
"Oh, look at that!" Ash grinned excitedly. It was a Pokémon that he had never seen before, but his excitement caused the Pokémon to tense up, earning him a dirty look from the older boy.
Letting his backpack slide off his back, Gary rummaged through it before pulling out a few pellets of Pokémon food, and placed it in the palm of his hand. "C'mon, little guy. I'm not gonna hurt 'ya."
"Quil?" the Pokémon squeaked, and its eyes honed in on the food that was outstretched in Gary's hand. His words seemed to have soothed it, as the flames flickering atop its back went out, and it slowly trotted up to Gary on two legs before munching on the food offered to it.
"There," Gary hummed, and smiled before reaching out and picking up the Pokémon. The Fire-type easily took to his grip and settled into his folded arms. "That's one down, two more to go."
"Looks like you were right about which Pokémon we were looking for!" Ash said, smiling down at the unfamiliar Pokémon. "So I think in order to find the Water-type, we'll just have to find a body of water!"
"That's the smartest thing you've said all week, Ash," Gary teased, and though Ash grumbled in annoyance, the pair went off in search of water.

"Blast! Blastoise!" Ash's turtle-like Pokémon that was taller than both of them turned around and pointed triumphantly at a small man-made pond some distance away from the lab. Its Trainer hurried up to it and gave it a pat on the back of its shell.
"Thanks, Blastoise! I knew I could count on you!" Ash complimented, drawing out its Poké Ball and returning it inside. "Now we just have to find the Water Pokémon! Do you think it's under the water?"
"Ash, look!" Gary said, pointing toward the water. Following the point of his finger, Ash saw a pair of eyes peeking out from the water's surface. The red irises sparkled like rubies, and after realizing it had been discovered, the Pokémon leapt from the water and jumped onto the rocks that surrounded the pond. "It's a Totodile."
"A Totodile?" Ash repeated. The light blue Pokémon looked at them curiously, studying them lightly. Wanting to be in the same boat as Gary, Ash quickly slid off his own backpack. Copying his rival's actions, he fished out a few pellets of Pokémon food and knelt down so he was closer to the Water Pokémon's height. "Come here, little Totodile..."
"Ash, you might want to be-"
"I handled my Squirtle just fine when I first got it," Ash cut off with a smug look. "I think I can handle a little Totod-" Ash's pupils quickly dilated as a sharp, searing pain traveled from his wrist up his shoulder, and he leapt up and threw his head back with a yelp. Only seeing stars at this point, Ash flailed his arm around and around trying to get whatever had latched onto it to come off, but it was to no avail. When he stopped and looked down with involuntary tears of pain brimming from his ducts, he saw the Totodile had clamped its jaw around his hand.
"Toto!" it gurgled around Ash's wrist, seeming to smile up at the Kanto Trainer.
"Getoffgetoffgetoffgetoff!" the black-haired Trainer cried, continuing the flail around his arm – and with it the Totodile.
"That's not going to do anything," Gary told him. "A Totodile will bite anything, and can crush whatever it gets its jaw around. Basically, it won't let go until it wants to."
"I hope it wants to soon..." Ash replied quietly, looking down at the Big Jaw Pokémon that was attached to his wrist. Now that he wasn't flailing it around, the pain had dimmed to a dull throb.
"Toto!" the Water Pokémon seemed to tease with a big crocodile grin.
"Now the last one is the Grass-type," Gary said, looking down at the Cyndaquil still in his arms. He held it out as it took in a breath, and the Pokémon sneezed, and when doing so, the fire flared up on its back momentarily.
"It could be anywhere in this forest," Ash muttered, looking around. It also didn't help that they didn't know exactly what they were looking for, so trying to find the Pokémon would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
"I think we should bring these two back to the lab and see if we can get Professor Elm's attention," Gary suggested. "He'll be sure to know its personality, and at least have an idea where it would be."
"Good idea," Ash agreed, and they both turned back the way they came in. It wasn't hard to lose track of where the lab was, as they could still see it high over the trees.
But as they emerged from the forest and into a small clearing just before the lab, they saw a small Pokémon with a large leaf sticking out of its head swinging its leaf around and around and striking a rock in front of it. "Hey, that wasn't there before!" Hearing the stranger's voice, the Pokémon whipped around and glared at the two. It seemed angry that they had caught it in the middle of its practice session.
With Totodile still attached to his wrist, Ash gave the Grass Pokémon a smile that was as warm as the sun before slowly walking up to it. "Hey. Let's get you back to the lab," he said with a soothing voice. Despite this, the Grass Pokémon glared at him and swung the leaf on the top of its head. A barrage of leaves came spinning out from it, and Ash yelped and jumped back as the leaves plunged into the ground.
"Spunky little thing," Gary commented.
"Fine! If it wants a battle, I'll give it a battle!" Ash said, his eyebrows drawing together. With his primary hand currently occupied, Ash awkwardly grabbed his choice of Pokémon with his left hand from his belt. "Charmeleon, I choose-"
"Ash!" Gary interrupted with an exasperated look. "We want to get it back in one piece."
"Oh yeah, you're right..." the younger boy muttered with a sigh, and replaced Charmeleon's Poké Ball with another. "I choose you! Bulbasaur!" The ball opened above the grass and his Bulbasaur emerged from inside it, giving a cry as it did.
The other Grass-type wasted no time in striking out with a Vine Whip. Two of the buds that circled its neck like a necklace stretched out and snaked towards Bulbasaur, but Ash's own Grass-type reacted with a Vine Whip of its own. The two vines shot at each other and met in the middle. They wrapped around each other and tried to fight over dominance over the other. "Bulbasaur, Sleep Powder attack!" Ash commanded.
"Bulba!" Bulbasaur kept its opponent in place with Vine Whip, and released a sparkling blue powder from the opening on the bulb on its back. The sapphire dust spread over the other Grass-type, and slowly, its red eyes began to drift shut. After a few more moments, its vines retracted from Bulbasaur's, and it collapsed on its stomach, fast asleep.
"Gotcha!" Ash grinned, and crossed the clearing to grab the grass starter and tuck it underneath his left arm. "And that's all three!"

"I really can't thank you enough for getting the three Pokémon before they got too far!" After getting back to the lab, the pair finally managed to get Professor Elm's attention, and truth be told, he never even realized that the Pokémon under his supervision had left the lab in the first place. Now that they were safely behind closed doors, the three Pokémon were now eating a big meal of Pokémon food. "I was trying to finish my research article, and the time seemed to melt away. They certainly are a wily bunch, and that Chikorita is one of the most fiery Grass Pokémon I've ever seen!"
"Chikorita?" Ash asked.
"Maybe I should explain things more fully," Professor Elm said. "New Bark Trainers get to choose one of three: a Chikorita, which is a Grass-type. Or they can pick Cyndaquil, which is a Fire-type."
"Cyndaquil!" the small Fire Mouse Pokémon squealed with excitement upon hearing its name.
"Or they can have a Totodile, which is a Water-type."
"New Pokémon Trainers back home get to pick a Charmander, or a Squirtle! Or a Bulbasaur!" Ash told Professor Elm. "I chose Squirtle."
"Well if those were the Pokémon you had to choose from, I'd say you must come from Pallet Town."
"Yeah! That's right! We're here to challenge the Johto League!"
"So I suppose you know Professor Samuel Oak!"
"He's my grandfather," Gary nodded. "And he's the one who actually told us to come here in the first place."
"He was even over my house for dinner the other night!" Ash added.
Professor Elm's glasses shimmered in the light. "It certainly is an honor that he directed two of his newest students to come see me. After all, I was his top student!" He adjusted his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "I remember the first paper I submitted to him at the university: a brilliant analysis of the hybridized communicative faculties of Pokémon! A truly groundbreaking work!" Ash's eyes and attention seemed to both glaze over, but saw that Gary was nodding along with it. "Professor Oak only gave me an A-minus because he failed to recognize the genius of my thesis!
"And although I admire and respect Professor Oak's scientific achievements, I am forced to consider him my personal enemy!" He gestured to the bookshelf behind him, and Ash slowly moved away from Professor Elm and toward the other three starter Pokémon to play with them. It all sounded like gibberish to him. Gary, however, did seem somewhat interested. "As you can see from my published work, I focus my studies on unusual Pokémon abilities – which I find infinitely more interesting than Professor Oak's research, which concentrates on Pokémon and their human relationships, because I..."
They were gonna be here a while.
o 0 o
It was sunset by the time they were leaving the lab. Ash had heard enough talking for a lifetime, and even though Gary was interested as well, he seemed to be ready to move on on their journey as well. And so, the pair cut the hotheaded professor off before another tangent could begin, and with their backpacks firmly over their shoulders, they both waved goodbye to the man.
"Thanks again for getting all the Pokémon back, boys! Good luck in the Johto League!" he cried as he waved a hand over his head. Ash and Gary returned the wave, and now with the 'winds of new beginnings' to their backs, they look forward to the Johto League.
