Awakened by the whistle of the train, Elizabeth opened her eyes and realized she was leaning on her strong Mountie pillow—who was also asleep. A few months ago, it would have taken a lot more to wake her, but ever since Jack's illness set in, a full night's rest had become a luxury.
Alone in that house, the responsibility fell solely on her to make sure her son was safe. She had spent countless nights waking up to check on him, but here, on the train, it was different. For the first time in a long time, she felt… safe.
"Nathan," she murmured, running her fingers through his tousled hair. "We're almost there."
Nathan groggily rubbed his eyes. "Good morning, sweetheart." He sighed contentedly as she continued massaging his scalp. "That feels really good. Don't be afraid to do it again." Leaning in, he kissed her softly.
Elizabeth smiled. "I think it's time to wake up the kids." She lightly tapped Allie, who had been asleep on her shoulder. "Good morning."
As the train slowed to a stop, Nathan stood and stretched, rolling his shoulders to ease the tension from the long ride. Allie carefully shifted Jack's head from her lap, letting him stir awake as she reached for their bags.
"Come on, buddy," Nathan said gently, lifting the still-groggy boy into his arms. Jack yawned, resting his head against Nathan's shoulder as they stepped off the train onto the dimly lit platform.
The crisp morning air greeted them, carrying the scent of salt from the nearby coast. Nathan adjusted Jack in his arms and glanced around, a sudden realization hitting him.
"We don't have anywhere to go," he whispered, not wanting to worry the children.
Elizabeth hesitated for only a second before her eyes lit with certainty. "I know a place."
Nathan studied her, sensing the confidence in her voice. Trusting her, he nodded. "Lead the way."
Elizabeth glanced at Jack. "How are you feeling, sweetheart?"
"Tired," he mumbled.
"Okay. We'll stop at the lab and get your insulin.."
They hailed a taxi, and Elizabeth instructed the driver to take them to the insulin lab. As they arrived, she hesitated.
"This shouldn't take long. You two can stay in the car with our bags."
Once back in the taxi, she met Nathan's gaze, grateful for his steady presence.
"Take us to the West Cape Boardinghouse," she instructed the driver.
