The glow of the overturned van flickered dimly in the alley as the turtles gathered around a small canister on the ground. It pulsed with an eerie, green-blue light—alive with a strange energy that none of them could deny.
"Whoa," the brothers murmured together.
Yuki stepped forward, arms crossed, expression unreadable. "...That's it. That's the stuff that changed us."
Leo crouched beside it, his eyes locked in quiet awe. "So that's the—"
"...Mutagen that turned us into what we are now," Donatello finished, voice reverent.
Ariel squatted down next to Mikey, face close to the canister. "It looks like glowing alien snot. In a good way."
Michelangelo leaned in even closer, his nose practically touching the lid. "Let's drink some!"
"What?" Raph snapped, reeling back. "Why would you do that?"
"'Cause if you mutate a mutant," Mikey said with wide eyes, "you get a super mutant!"
"Or a pile of goo on the sidewalk," Donnie muttered.
"Either way, it's an improvement," Raph added dryly, nudging Mikey with his elbow.
"I volunteer Mikey to test that theory," Yuki muttered.
"I second that," Ariel said, raising her hand.
Leo's voice cut through the chatter, calm and focused. "This is huge. Whoever kidnapped those people—they're connected to what happened to us fifteen years ago."
Donnie frowned. "But how is that even possible?"
"For alien robots," Mikey began dramatically, "anything is possible."
Donnie groaned. "Stop that. There's no such thing as alien robots."
Ariel raised a hand. "Actually—there kinda is. Mikey and I saw one. Or—like—part of one. It had a weird robot body and then this brain thing popped out and screamed at us."
"See?!" Mikey pointed. "Witness! A second witness!"
Raph rolled his eyes, already done with the conversation. He snatched the mutagen canister from Donnie's hands and stalked toward the man who had fallen out of the van.
"Time to get some answers," he growled. "Who are you, and what's going on?"
The man glared at them. "Name's Snake. And I got nothin' to say to you hideous freaks."
"Oh, well, that's 'cause you don't know us yet," Raph said with a cold smile.
He grabbed Snake by the collar and tossed him forward. Snake tried to scramble away, but Donnie and Mikey were already holding him down. Ariel helped by sitting on his legs with a cheerful hum.
"We were just regular kids," Raph said, cracking the canister open with a hiss. "Then we got hit with a little of this."
Snake's eyes widened in panic. "Wha—what are you doing?"
"Playing a little game I like to call Mutation Roulette." Raph tilted the canister menacingly. "You might end up handsome like me... or disgusting and deformed like Mikey or Ariel here."
"Hey!" Mikey and Ariel shouted, offended.
Yuki whispered, "He's got a point."
"Yuki!" Ariel whined.
Raph grinned. "So... you feel lucky?"
"Okay, okay!" Snake sputtered. "They call themselves the Kraang! They've been grabbing scientists from all over the city!"
Leo stepped in, arms crossed. "Well, that worked out pretty good."
"Of course it did," Raph smirked. "Would you wanna look like Mikey or Ari?"
"We're right here!" Ariel says.
"What do they want with scientists?" Leo asked.
Snake scowled. "I don't know."
Raph raised the canister again threateningly.
Snake flinched. "Okay! They're takin' them out of the city tonight! But I don't know where!"
Donnie's eyes lit up. "This is awesome! That girl's dad is a scientist. I'm a scientist." He giggled. "She is so gonna like me."
Snake rolled his eyes. "I don't think you're her type."
Yuki gave Donnie a look, but didn't say anything.
Leo's voice sharpened. "Where are they now?"
Minutes later, the mutants crouched on a rooftop, peering Through the lens of a battered periscope, Leo surveyed the Kraang base below. The alley was dim, patrolled by sleek black vans and blank-faced guards—Kraang droids in human skin. Just beside them, Snake sat tied up near a vent, arms crossed and squirming in silence. It was Yuki's idea to tie him up.
"There's gotta be, like, twenty of them down there," Leo muttered, adjusting the focus.
"And that's just the ones we can see," Donnie added, eyes narrowed.
Raph cracked his knuckles, his sais already in hand. "All right! An all-you-can-beat buffet!"
Ariel bounced beside him, meteor hammer spinning lazily. "Ooooh, buffet? I'm in."
"We can't just rush in there," Leo cut in, lowering the periscope. "We need a plan."
"Why?" Raph demanded, impatient.
Donnie gestured toward the building. "Think, shellbrain. There are innocent lives at stake. If we screw this up, they're gone."
Raph's eyes narrowed. "Then we don't screw it up."
A sharp breath came from behind them. Yuki crouched near the edge of the roof, arms folded, her gaze locked on the alley. "He's right. This has to be precise. One mistake, and lights out."
"Okay, drama queen." Raph rolled his eyes.
From the back, Mikey's stomach growled dramatically.
"Boy, I could sure go for some of that pizza right now," he muttered. "What? I can't be the only one that's hungry."
"You're definitely not," Ariel said, patting her own stomach.
Leo rolled his eyes and stood. "Focus, you two."
His gaze scanned the rooftop.
"...Where's Snake?"
Everyone turned.
The rope lay loose and empty.
"...Aw, geez," Mikey said quietly.
Yuki was already on her feet, blades half-drawn. "Of course."
"GET HIM!" Leo barked, and the team leapt into motion.
⸻
The chase split the team into two groups. Donnie, Mikey, and Ariel sprinted down one alley, shadows slicing between dumpsters and brick walls.
"Maybe he went over it," Donnie guessed as they skidded to a stop at a tall brick wall.
"I'm on it!" Mikey called.
"Alley-oop!"
Donnie boosted Mikey up. Ariel leapt for the edge behind him—just as Mikey's foot smacked her in the forehead.
"OW!" she cried.
A crash sounded from the other side.
Mikey's voice floated back. "Yeah... I don't think he went this way."
Ariel rubbed her head, glaring up.
Meanwhile, Leo, Raph, and Yuki swept through a narrower alley, scanning behind trash bins and shadows.
Leo sighed in frustration. "Great. We let him get away."
Raph smirked. "Whoa, whoa. You're the leader. That means you let him get away."
Leo shot him a look. "You're not helping."
Raph shrugged. "I'm not trying to help."
Yuki stepped out of a shadowy alcove, arms crossed. "No, Raph is right. You need to lead better."
Leo glared at her and she merely shrugged.
exhaled sharply and squared his shoulders. "Fine. You want me to lead? Then we do this my way. We go back to the lair, gear up, and at midnight—we drive Snake's van right up to the gate. They'll think we're him, and we cruise right in."
Raph tilted his head. "And then we bust some heads?"
Leo nodded. "And then we bust some heads."
"I love a happy ending," Raph grinned.
Yuki didn't respond right away—just gave Leo a long, unreadable stare, as they started walking away.
Snake crouched behind a dumpster, grinning in silence.
Back in the lair, preparations were underway.
Donatello hunched over his workbench, goggles tight over his eyes as he made the final adjustments to a set of climbing claws. Sparks snapped and crackled as he soldered, the claws clicking together perfectly as he gave a satisfied nod.
Ariel, meanwhile, was perched beside him, leaning dangerously close to the tool rack. "What's this button do?"
"Don't touch that," Donnie muttered, not even looking.
She hovered her finger anyway. "What about this one?"
"Seriously, do not touch that."
"...Then why is it so shiny?"
Across the lair, Raphael stood by his small tank, crouched low as he watched his pet turtle drift lazily through the water. His voice was low, uncharacteristically gentle.
"I know this is risky. I don't know how it's gonna go down out there. But I'll be back. You don't gotta worry about me." He tapped the glass. "I love you, man."
Behind him, a familiar, obnoxious voice broke the moment.
"Aww, are you talking to Spike again?"
Raph spun, ready to bark—but it wasn't just Mikey standing there with a smirk.
Yuki leaned against the doorway beside him, arms crossed, expression unreadable except for the tiniest twitch of a smirk at the corner of her mouth.
"That's cute," she said flatly.
"Real heartwarming," Mikey added, eyes wide with faux sincerity. "Do you guys cuddle at night, too?"
"I'm gonna break both your faces," Raph growled, grabbing the nearest object—a wooden spoon—and lunging.
"Not the spoon again!" Mikey yelped, darting away.
Yuki calmly turned and walked off, calling over her shoulder, "Better run, little guy's feelin' emotional today."
⸻
In the dojo, Leo sat cross-legged before a low table, schematics and maps laid out in neat, careful rows. He adjusted a piece, then pulled it back. His expression was sharp, but his brow creased with doubt.
"I think this plan's gonna work," he murmured, more to himself than anyone else.
Behind him, quiet footsteps echoed.
"No plan ever survives contact with the enemy," came Splinter's calm voice.
Leo turned to find his sensei standing in the doorway, arms folded, gaze steady.
"It is how you react to the unexpected that will determine if you and your brothers and sisters succeed."
Leo straightened a bit. "Sensei... do you really think I'm ready for this?"
Splinter walked closer. "Leonardo, I made you leader for a reason."
Leo hesitated. "I've been wondering... why me? Why not Yuki?"
Splinter was quiet for a long moment.
"She was your daughter before any of us," Leo continued. "She's older. She's your blood. She should be the leader."
Splinter's voice was gentle. "Yuki is strong. Disciplined. But leadership is not about control—it is about connection. Yuki has lived with loss longer than the rest of you. Her path was forged in silence and grief. She carries her pain alone."
He turned his gaze to the wall, where an old, faded photograph hung—of a smiling woman holding baby girls. "When Tang Shen was taken from me... and Miwa was lost... all I had left was Yuki. I thought I had failed her. I thought I had nothing else."
He turned back to Leo.
"Then, one day, I found four small turtles... and a frightened little ferret curled against Yuki's side."
Leo blinked. "Ariel."
"She was just a pet then, just like you and your brothers," Splinter nodded. "But fate had different plans. The mutagen transformed all of you—and gave Yuki five younger siblings. And me... five more children.
Leo swallowed.
"You may not be blood in the traditional sense, aside from the fact that our DNA fused, but you are my children too," Splinter continued. "I chose you to be leader for a reason, one that you must discover on your own."
Leo looked down at the plans, still uncertain. "But what if I fail?"
"You will," Splinter said simply. "All leaders do. But you will also rise again. That is what matters."
A sudden voice echoed from the hall:
"GET BACK HERE!"
"Nooo! Not the spoon again!"
Splinter sighed.
Leo chuckled quietly. "Should I...?"
"Yes. And maybe take the spoon."
Outside the Kraang hideout, Snake tightened his grip on his blaster and narrowed his eyes at the darkened alley.
"They'll be here any minute," he muttered.
Beside him, a trio of Kraang robots stood idly, their mechanical voices echoing in overlapping loops of nonsense.
"Kraang, are those who are coming to this place coming to this place?" asked one.
"I lack that knowledge, Kraang. I will inquire of Kraang about that knowledge," replied another. "Do you have the knowledge if those coming to this place are near this place, Kraang?"
Snake's face flushed red with frustration. His teeth ground together until he finally snapped.
"They're turtles and ferrets! Call them freaks! 'Are the freaks here?' That's what you're trying to say!"
The third Kraang pointed stiffly. "There are lights of a vehicle which contain that which you wish us to call the turtles coming to this place which you wish us to call here."
"What are you even—" Snake turned, then froze. His eyes went wide.
A van was barreling straight toward them.
The Kraang and Snake opened fire, lasers streaking through the night—but the van didn't stop. It roared past the blast zone and slammed into the entrance of the hideout with a violent crash. Snake dove out of the way, but not fast enough—one of the green canisters of mutagen flew from the van's open cargo and burst against the ground.
The contents splashed across Snake's face.
He screamed.
His body twisted and convulsed, the transformation beginning immediately.
Meanwhile, the Kraang cautiously approached the wrecked vehicle, blasters ready. But when they looked inside, the seats were empty.
"The ones coming to this place are not in the vehicle bringing them to this place," one Kraang stated flatly.
"Then in what place are the ones called the turtles and ferrets?" another asked.
⸻
High above, the turtles and ferretsl scaled the side of the building, the night air cool against their shells.
"Wow," Mikey said cheerfully, clinging to the wall. "Lucky thing that van showed up to distract them."
Donatello facepalmed—then accidentally hit himself in the head with one of his climbing claws. "Ow!"
"Nice one, genius," Yuki muttered dryly as she climbed effortlessly beside him.
Leo shook his head. "That was the plan, Mikey. We knew Snake was hiding in the alley, so Raph, Yuki and I made him think we'd be in the van."
"But we weren't in the van," Mikey pointed out.
"Just keep climbing," Leo snapped.
"Can do," Mikey chirped.
Ariel, climbing upside down and giggling, peeked back at Yuki. "Race you to the vent!"
"No," Yuki replied flatly—but sped up anyway.
They reached a ventilation grate, pried it open, and dropped silently into the enemy stronghold. The moment they hit the floor, they struck—disabling two unsuspecting Kraang guards with swift, precise blows.
Yuki swept low, her twin tantos flashing, slicing through the blasters before the droids could react. Ariel bounded forward with her meteor hammer, swinging it wildly and knocking a Kraang into the wall.
"Oops," she grinned. "Too hard?"
The corridor beyond was cold and mechanical, lined with unfamiliar technology.
Donnie's eyes lit up. "I've never seen anything like this," he whispered. "They're using a metal alloy I don't even recognize."
Raph snorted. "Gosh! A metal even you don't know? That just boggles the mind."
"Wanna talk metallurgy with me, genius?" Donnie shot back. "Bring it."
"I don't—and—"
"Guys," Leo snapped. "Enemy lair. Focus."
They turned the next corner—and froze.
A cluster of Kraangdroids waited ahead, their glowing eyes and heavy blasters pointed down the corridor.
"Whoa," Donnie breathed. "Alien robots."
Mikey threw his hands in the air. "Alien robots, huh?! Hmm, where have I heard that before? Oh, yeah! Ari and I have been saying it for hours!"
Laser fire ripped through the hallway as the team moved like shadows. Mikey and Donnie swept through the droids with synchronized strikes while Raph smashed through the opposition, his sais gleaming. Leo spun, sliced, and disabled droids in a blur of motion.
Yuki ducked under a shot and flipped over a Kraang, striking its control core in a single fluid motion.
"Amateurs," she muttered.
Ariel twirled through the chaos, giggling as she spun her weapon. "I'm helping! I think!"
One droid collapsed—and from its torso, a pink, shrieking creature burst free, screeching and latching onto the floor.
Mikey pounced, knocking it unconscious with the flat of his nunchuck.
"See?! See?! It's a brain thing! We told you! But did any of you believe us?! No!" He pointed accusingly at everyone. "'Cause you all think we're just some kind of—OW!"
"Idiots," Ariel finished as if the creature didn't just bite down on Mikey's arm.
Mikey flailed, trying to get it off. The flailing threw the Kraang straight into a control panel.
A loud alarm rang through the complex.
From down the corridor, footsteps echoed.
All of them turned in unison.
"Mikey!" Leo snapped.
"We're were right about the brain thing!" Mikey insisted. "You gotta give me that!"
The robots rounded the corner.
"Let's move!" Leo shouted.
"Move where?!" Raph yelled.
Donnie glanced up. "I think those are power conduits!"
"Oh, that's really interesting, Donnie," Raph muttered. "Thanks for the trivia."
Donnie rolled his eyes. "They converge that way—which means something important's down there!"
Leo nodded. "Go!"
They sprinted down the hall.
Mikey jabbed Raph in the side. "You got spanked."
Raph grabbed Mikey's finger and twisted. "Ow, ow! Mercy! Not cool!"
Ariel cackled. "Sibling bonding!"
They rounded the final corridor—and there, behind a thick security door, were two people.
Donnie's eyes widened. "We found 'em!"
Blaster fire erupted behind them.
Leo turned. "We'll hold them off! You pick the lock!"
As Raph, Mikey, Yuki, and Ariel engaged the incoming droids, Donatello dropped to his knees in front of the panel.
"Don't worry!" he called to the girl behind the glass. "I'll have you out of there in a second."
The red-haired teenager looked him over, startled. "Okay, giant lizard-thing..."
"A turtle, actually," Donnie corrected. "I'm Donatello."
"...April."
"Wow, that's a pretty—OOMPH!"
Leo landed hard on top of him, knocking Donnie face-first into the panel.
"The lock, Donnie!"
"Right! Sorry, yeah!"
He tore off the cover and started working, fingers flying across the wires.
April ducked as another shot hit the wall. "Not to rush you, but hurry up!"
"Hey!" Donnie called over his shoulder. "You think it's easy to pick a lock with these hands?"
Ariel called back, "Want me to smash it?!"
"No!" Donnie and Leo shouted in unison.
"Uh—sorry," April added.
"Oh, for the love of—" Raph shoved Donnie out of the way and jabbed both sais into the panel. Sparks flew.
From behind the door, startled voices echoed.
"What?!"
The door hissed open.
But standing on the other side... were more Kraang.
"No!" April cried out as one of the droids grabbed her arm.
"Get the door!" Leo shouted.
They charged, but the Kraang yanked April and her father backward into the hallway. Raph lunged forward, tearing off one of the Kraang's arms and using it to jam the control panel.
"That'll hold 'em," he said, turning around to find his siblings staring at him with alarm. "What?"
Leo raised a brow. "You are seriously twisted."
Raph shrugged. "Thanks."
"I'm scared," Ariel whispered to yuki. "Protect me."
"No."
From the levels above, a scream echoed.
"No! Let me go!"
April.
All six siblings turned sharply toward the sound. Racing up the metal ramp, they burst through a set of swinging doors—and stopped cold.
At the top of the incline stood April and her father, struggling against their captors. But between them and the hostages stood something else.
It was Snake—but no longer the man they had interrogated earlier. What stood in his place was a massive, twisted creature of roots, vines, and barbed limbs. His head resembled a mantis's, his body part-plant, part-insect, with a grotesque heart pulsing just beneath his overgrown throat. Venus flytrap-like tendrils lashed at the air.
The mutant snarled, voice distorted and filled with hate. "You did this to me! Now you're going to pay!"
Leo's grip tightened on his swords. "It's Snake. He mutated into... a giant weed?"
Mikey stared in awe. "That's weird. You'd think he'd turn into a snake."
Raph groaned. "Yeah, you would... if you were an idiot."
"But his name is Snake!" Mikey protested.
"You don't understand science," Yuki muttered, stepping up beside Leo, her twin tantos drawn.
Ariel blinked wide-eyed. "He's like... if a salad turned evil."
The creature shrieked and drove its roots into the metal flooring, anchoring itself with terrifying force.
"I'll crush you, turtles!" Snakeweed roared.
Donatello raised a hand in surrender. "Uh... would it help if we said it was an accident?"
Snakeweed responded by snapping his clawed tendrils toward them.
"I'll take that as a no," Donnie muttered.
They leapt into action.
Leo was the first to strike, flipping over a slashing vine and slicing through it midair. Violet sap sprayed everywhere.
"Eww!" Mikey gagged. "Don't let it touch me! Don't let it touch me—AAAH! IT TOUCHED ME!"
Yuki darted forward, swift and silent, cutting cleanly through a pair of vines. "Focus," she snapped. "Watch the regrowth!"
But the vines she'd cut regrew in seconds—thicker and longer.
Snakeweed laughed. "You can't stop nature!"
Donnie's eyes widened. "It grew back? No fair!"
Overhead, a helicopter began to rise from the landing pad, April and Kirby aboard with two Kraang guards. Leo spotted it and turned instantly.
"Donnie! Go!"
Donatello didn't hesitate. Leo cupped his hands and launched him upward. Donnie caught the edge of the roof and scrambled up toward the chopper, vanishing from sight.
Back below, the others were overwhelmed by the mutant's sheer size and strength.
Raph rolled beneath Snakeweed and slashed upward, only to recoil as more of the creature's glowing sap splattered across his shell. "Disgusting."
Snakeweed swung a thick tendril and sent Raph flying through the air. Mikey and Leo barely caught him before he hit the wall.
Ariel ducked beneath a vine, springing up behind Snakeweed with her meteor hammer. "Hey, overgrown weed-whacker!" she shouted, swinging the weapon full-force into its leg. It staggered back—but only for a second.
The vines lashed wildly. One wrapped around Ariel's waist.
"Yuki—!" she shrieked.
"I see it," Yuki growled, slicing the vine free with a swift spin. Ariel tumbled to the ground with a thud.
"Thanks, sis!" Ariel coughed.
"Don't make it a habit," Yuki muttered, eyes narrowing.
"Snakeweed is really powerful!" Mikey gasped, dodging another vine.
"Snakeweed?" Raph muttered, rubbing his head.
"Yeah! His name was Snake, and now he's a weed, so—"
"We get it!" Raph snapped.
More Kraang burst through the doors, blasters firing.
"Now we have to fight off alien robots too?" Leo growled.
"With brains!" Mikey added, ducking a shot.
"Let it go, man!" Raph shouted.
⸻
Above, Donatello reached the rooftop and charged toward the rising helicopter. April sat trapped inside, eyes wide with panic. Donnie vaulted upward, using his bo staff as a springboard to launch himself toward the landing rails.
He grabbed hold.
His heart pounded as he scrambled for balance.
But a Kraang droid was already waiting. It raised its weapon—and opened fire.
Donnie ducked, barely avoiding the blast. With a swift kick, he knocked the droid from the helicopter, sending it plummeting to the ground.
But April was slipping.
Her fingers clung to the edge of the doorway, legs flailing.
"Hold on!" Donnie shouted. "I'm coming!"
She screamed.
Donnie leapt, catching her mid-fall. They plummeted, wind rushing past them—
And landed hard, but safe.
April groaned, staring back at the retreating helicopter.
"My dad..."
Donatello said nothing. There wasn't time.
They ran.
⸻
Back on the battlefield, the siblings were barely holding their ground.
Snakeweed's vines thrashed in every direction, tearing into walls and sending sparks flying. Kraang blasts lit up the night sky, forcing them to duck and roll behind cover. Ariel tumbled across the floor, barely missing a blast as her meteor hammer swung wildly, knocking a Kraang droid off its feet.
"What the heck!" she shouted, dodging another vine. "This guy seriously holds a grudge!"
Yuki, panting but focused, drove her tanto blades into another vine, slicing through it with clean precision. "He's not holding a grudge," she muttered. "He's just insane."
Donnie and April burst back onto the scene from the rooftop.
He blinked. "Are they leading him toward the power generator? That's—" He paused, awe spreading across his face. "—either incredibly stupid... or brilliant. Or both."
Leo slid across the floor, blades gleaming. "Hey, come and get me, Stinkweed!"
Snakeweed snarled and lunged. Leo leapt, slashing through a vine that lashed toward Mikey. "Move!"
Raph and Mikey darted to either side, jeering and dodging just out of reach—guiding Snakeweed exactly where they wanted him.
Ariel, still breathless, followed their lead. "Go left!" she shouted. "Almost there!"
Snakeweed roared, enraged, and raised his full height.
Then—
His foot slammed down directly atop the glowing generator.
A low hum built... and then—
A pulse of energy surged.
Snakeweed screamed.
The blast engulfed the creature in a brilliant column of light and heat. Vines sizzled. Metal melted. The Kraang scrambled to escape as the explosion consumed the entire upper level.
The siblings shielded their eyes.
When the smoke cleared... there was nothing left of Snakeweed but burning vines, flickering embers, and twisted roots.
Silence.
Then a low groan from Mikey: "We won, right? Please tell me we won."
"We won," Leo breathed, lowering his swords.
"Barely," Yuki added, wiping sap off her blade.
Ariel leaned on her hammer, wide-eyed. "That... was awesome."
Raph cracked his neck. "He smelled worse after he exploded."
April, still catching her breath, looked around at them—six mutants, panting and battered, but standing.
"Let's get out of here," Leo said quietly.
And together, the Hamato siblings slipped into the shadows with April—leaving behind the wreckage, the war, and the faint, faint pulse of something still alive in the smoking remains.
⸻
Far behind, deep in the wreckage, the Kraang watched the smoking remains.
"The ones called turtles and ferrets are not in the place they were," one droned.
"They are dangerous to what we are doing in this place and other places," another replied.
"Yes. I am knowledge of that. The turtles and ferrets must be eliminated... from all places."
Near them, the remains of Snakeweed twitched.
A vine curled.
A heart beat once.
Then again.
The hamato siblings were talking to April on a window cell.
Donatello stood closest, his eyes fixed on the warm light from April's window.
"Are you gonna be alright?" he asked, his voice softer than usual.
April nodded, though the weariness in her face didn't fade. "I guess. My aunt says I can stay here as long as I want. But I'll feel a lot better once I track down the creeps that took my dad."
"Won't the police help?" Leo asked from the back.
April gave a humorless laugh. "Funny thing—when you tell them your dad was kidnapped by alien brains in robot bodies, they don't take you all that seriously."
"I hear that," Mikey murmured, nudging Ariel, who nodded wide-eyed in agreement.
Yuki, sitting on the edge of the roof with one leg pulled up, said nothing, but her eyes were sharp. Watching. Calculating.
Donatello stepped forward, voice steady. "April, I swear—we won't rest until we find him."
Raph crossed his arms. "We won't?"
"No," Leo said firmly. "We won't."
April's gaze drifted over each of them—six strangers who had become something more. Family. Allies.
"Thank you," she said quietly. "But... it's not your fight."
Yuki finally spoke. "That's where you're wrong."
April blinked.
Donatello nodded. "Yes, it is our fight."
April smiled—genuinely, this time. "Then I'm glad you're in it."
She turned, stepped inside, and closed the window behind her.
⸻
Back in the lair, the mood had shifted. The adrenaline was gone, but a quiet, settled energy remained. Victory hadn't solved everything, but it had meant something. And for now, that was enough.
While the others unwound in the living room—Mikey and Ariel bickering over who was on remote duty, Donnie fiddling with a damaged Kraang blaster, and Raph cleaning his sais—Leo remained in the dojo with Splinter.
The air there was still. Focused.
"I am impressed, Leonardo," Splinter said, standing tall. "You proved to be an effective leader under the most difficult of circumstances."
Leo bowed. "Thank you, Sensei. And I think... I think I figured out why you made me leader."
Splinter raised a brow. "Oh? Why is that?"
Leo straightened. "Because you sensed something in me. A warrior's spirit. Someone who could guide my siblings and shape us into heroes."
Splinter paused.
"No."
Leo blinked. "No?"
"I made you leader," Splinter said calmly, "because you asked."
Leo stared. "That's it? But you always seemed so sure of your decision."
"As a leader," Splinter said, folding his hands, "you must learn that certainty is a luxury. There is no right or wrong—only choices, and the strength to stand by them."
Leo hesitated. "...So you could have picked anyone?"
"Yes," Splinter said with quiet certainty.
Leo squinted. "Even Mikey? Or Ariel?"
There was a beat.
Splinter's whiskers twitched in amusement. "No. That would have been wrong."
As if summoned, a loud bang echoed from the living room.
"ARIEL!" Yuki shouted. "Why is the couch glowing?!"
"I thought Donnie's blaster was a lamp!" Ariel's voice yelled back.
"It's a weapon, you glitter-brained disaster!" Yuki snapped.
Donnie groaned from somewhere offscreen. "I TOLD YOU NOT TO TOUCH IT!"
Leo just sighed, rubbing his eyes.
Splinter smiled gently. "My point... exactly."
Then, from the main tunnel—
"HEY!" Mikey shouted. "Everybody! Come here! We made the news!"
Leo and Splinter joined the others in the living room as the screen flickered to life. Channel 6.
Onscreen stood a wide-eyed reporter, dramatic and over-the-top.
"A report of—get this—ninjas in New York!" Carlos Chang O'Brien Gambe beamed. "Don't believe me? After residents reported a disturbance, the police recovered this!"
A throwing star.
"For Channel Six News, this is Carlos Chang O'Brien Gambe saying—Hi-ya!"
The screen cut to black.
Mikey spun in place, his grin unstoppable. "This is awesome! We're gonna be famous!"
Splinter stepped forward, his voice firm. "You must be more careful. The ninja's most powerful weapon is the shadows. Being brought into the light is a dangerous thing."
"Relax, Sensei," Raph said, waving it off as he flopped onto the couch. "It's one little news story. What's the worst that can happen?"
Yuki muttered, "Famous last words..."
