Chapter 14
Dave arrived at the hospital to find a nurse waiting at the emergency entrance. Dave stopped the car and the doors automatically opened as soon as he shut off the engine. Dave and emerged from the vehicle and headed to the passenger side to help his wife out of the car. The nurse had the wheelchair all ready, and Dave helped Lynnette into it.
"I'll be waiting in the waiting room, sweetheart," Dave told Lynnette kissing her sweaty brow. "Just as soon, as I fill out the paperwork."
Dave got back in his car and started the engine so he could go and find a place to park.
~~~Dave and Lynnette~~~
"How's Lynnette?" came the voice of his daughter who was standing at the entrance to the waiting room.
"She was fine, last I knew," Dave said. "I'm glad you're here as Lynnette would want you here."
"Well, I did promise her that I would be there for the birth and I never break my word. I'm really looking forward to little Derrick's birth," Spencer said, as he and Michelle entered the waiting room.
"We all are though, so you aren't the only one that is anticipating the birth of Lynnette's son," Michelle said, as she sat down in one of the uncomfortable plastic chairs that were universal in all hospital waiting rooms.
"I mean, technically, Derrick will be my brother, even if no one outside of the family knows that," Michelle said.
"You know I hadn't thought of that, but you're right," Spencer said.
"No one else necessarily needs to know," Dave put in. "Some people might find it strange, but it's really not if you think about it. I adopted my three, because I was lonely and I wasn't about to marry any woman I didn't love. That I happened to find someone that I could love for the rest of my life and had a child by her, even if all my children are grown up is not so weird really. I mean, I'm stubborn enough not to do what I don't want to no matter what society wants or expects."
"That's very true," Michelle chuckled quietly since she was in the hospital.
"Who cares what anyone else thinks?" Dave suggested. "I don't consider myself part of that social circle anyway, and I never have, which they are well aware of, so I don't really care what they think or believe I should have done. I am my own man and those stuffed up asses can do what they want of course, so long as they leave me and my family out of it.
"Yes, I'm wealthy, but unlike most of the high class I give to charity because it's the right thing to do and not just because it looks good to certain types of people or so I can use it as a taxes exemption. I also go out of my way to help others not act like I'm better than everybody not in my class. That reason alone is one of many as to why I would never consider myself as part of that circle."
"You know, I agree with you and have never seen the point of catering to that set, as it would only make us miserable and who wants to be unhappy? I mean, they expected me to marry someone from that set, or at least someone with money, even though they are well aware that our family doesn't consider themselves part of it. That I didn't do so and married someone they considered a nobody just like you has them gossiping maliciously behind their hands."
"People will gossip, as you can't stop them from doing so. A lot of people have gossiped about me all my life and I just ignore them," Spencer said.
"And if they go too far, I can have them hemmed in so many lawsuits they won't know which way to turn," Dave said. "High society knows better than to mess with my family and that I will go out of my way to defend them if necessary. So long as they keep it to gossip then I won't have to take action."
Conversation lagged after that, and everybody fell silent, as they waited for word that Lynnette had given birth to her son.
They weren't worried she was going have any problems with the birth since immortals just didn't have any of the normal problems that regular people could have including dying in childbirth. That didn't mean it didn't take time, since they had to go through the labor just like any other woman.
~~~Dave and Lynnette~~~
Dave looked up as several people entered the waiting room and realized that he had been lost in thought, half dozing, for several hours as Diana, Roxie and Rocky had arrived.
"Are we in time?" Diana asked immediately.
"Yes, as Lynnette hasn't given birth yet," Spencer answered before Dave could.
"It shouldn't be much longer or at least I hope not," Michelle said.
"It might be hours still," Diana chuckled sitting down beside Dave with Roxie and Rocky sitting in chairs on the other side of the room. "I remember when I gave birth to each of my children and Spencer took over 20 hours to be born. First babies often take longer, I have no idea why," Diana said.
"Let's hope Lynnette isn't in labor for that long," Dave winced. "It's already been something like six hours."
"Roxie was nearly just as stubborn and took nearly 16 hours to arrive in this world," Diana remembered. "I remember being absolutely exhausted afterwards."
"Mom!" Roxie exclaimed an embarrassment at what her mother had revealed.
"What? Why are you so embarrassed, sweetie? Women giving birth is natural and hopefully that'll happen to you someday," Diana told her daughter with a wink and a smile.
Diana wasn't perturbed in the slightest at having embarrassed her oldest daughter and Dave nearly chuckled at Roxie's expression.
"Of course, first, you'd have to find a man and then get married before that happens," Diana continued blithely.
Dave noticed how Rocky simply slumped down in his chair saying nothing and trying to make himself as small as possible so that his mother wouldn't turn her attention on to him and embarrass him in front of others like she had his sister. His face was bright red with embarrassment, and it was clear he was trying to make himself unnoticeable so that his mother didn't start in on him.
"So how long did Rocky take to be born?" Michelle asked with malice in her expression as she gazed at Diana's youngest son.
"He was less stubborn and only took about 10 hours to arrive," Diana answered immediately. "That doesn't mean I wasn't exhausted afterwards though, because I was, just not as much as I was with the first two."
Rocky flushed again in embarrassment, but said nothing, simply shrank farther down in his chair.
Rocky was a handsome lad with his mother's blond hair instead of his older brother's and sister's dark brown. His nose was small and straight, though the nostrils were a bit larger than they should be and his eyes were the same brown as his brother's.
Lynnette was the only one that had gotten the blue eyes from their mother as the other three had the eye color of their father. Rocky was also tall and was about the same height as his brother who was over 6 feet, but unlike Spencer, Rocky had more of a boxer's build than a swimmer's. Dave assumed that Rocky's build was more like his father's then his mother's
"Well by then you had given birth twice, so of course, Rocky didn't take as long," Spencer spoke up.
"So how long did Lynnette take?" Dave asked Diana curiously.
"Lynnette was easiest one of all, but by then I'd given birth to three children, so it's not a surprise that the fourth time the labor was the shortest," Diana answered. "I was in labor for just over seven hours with Lynnette and now my youngest is giving birth to her first child. I don't know where the time has gone."
Diana looked nostalgic.
"Yeah, it doesn't seem like Lynnette is nearly 33," Spencer spoke up.
"It really doesn't," Diana agreed with a soft smile on her lips, as she thought about the birth of her youngest daughter. "It's hard to believe that my little girl is married and is in the process of giving birth to her first child. Still time, marching ever onwards, even if you wish it wouldn't."
"True, it does," Dave agreed. "None of us are getting any younger."
That wasn't quite true in Dave's, Michelle's and Spencer's case, but while technically they weren't getting any younger, they also weren't get any older either.
Everyone fell silent as they waited for word that little Derrick had been born.
~~~Dave and Lynnette~~~
Dave heard footsteps before he saw a nurse appear in the doorway. It had been 10 hours since his mate had gone into labor.
"I'm looking for David Rossi?" The nurse asked.
"That's me," Dave said standing. "How's my wife?"
"She's just fine and has finally given birth to a beautiful baby boy who is quite large."
"So how much does my grandson weigh?" Diana immediately asked.
The nurse hesitated for a second before Dave spoke up.
"You can talk in front of them, as they're family. They wanted to be here for the birth, even if most of them had to come from Las Vegas," Dave said, and the nurse nodded. "If you would answer Diana's question, please."
"The Rossi baby weighs over 9 pounds," the nurser replied. "He has all 10 fingers and all 10 toes and is as healthy as a horse despite being about a week early."
"A week is nothing," Diana said. "I remember when I was pregnant with Roxie here," Diana added pointed to her daughter. "She was nearly 3 weeks early and yet she turned out just fine."
Roxie blushed a brilliant red but said nothing simply glared at her mother for once again embarrassing her.
"We'll head up to the nursery to see little Derrick," Diana told Dave. "I'm sure you want to go see my daughter before you join us at the nursery."
"Yeah, I do," Dave agreed without argument. "I'll join you in the nursery presently."
They all parted ways for a few minutes and Dave headed to see Lynnette while everyone else headed up to the nursery.
The nurse sighed, as she watched them, go thinking it was too bad that David Rossi was now married as she'd had a slight crush on him ever since the first time she'd had seen him on the news.
But meeting him in person for the first time was totally different to seeing him on television. He was even more handsome than he had appeared on the news and simply oozed charisma and sexual appeal. The nurse sighed again in disappointment.
He had to be one of the sexiest men she had ever run across and that appeal had nothing to do with his money, though that didn't hurt. Unfortunately, like most sexy, handsome men, he was married.
While David Rossi was supposed to be at least in his early 50s he sure didn't look it, as he didn't look more than 30 or 35 at the most.
The nurse wondered what he could possibly do to still look so young and thought that the young Mrs. Rossi was indeed very lucky to be married to such a handsome, wealthy man.
The fact that the wife had just born, David Rossi a son meant that she was out of luck when it came to possibly dating him, as the nurse didn't see him divorcing his wife when she had just given birth to his heir.
Besides, she was no breaker of marriages. It was too bad she had ethics, and besides, she doubted that his wife would allow her to get anywhere near her husband, so it wasn't like she'd have a chance to flirt. Many men responded to flirting whether they were married or not, though some truly did love their wives and so didn't seem to notice when women flirted with them. Lynnette Rossi was one lucky woman the nurse thought enviously.
Some women just had all the luck.
