Back in the normal world, the Mystery Inc. gang have eventually made their way down to the town of Shining Time down at the end of the Indian Valley Railroad. The gang were trying their best to try and find anything that can help them find where Braedey, Rose, and Scooby-Doo are located, or even how to get to them.
The town of Shining Time has a population of about 5,006 people, all of them with their livelihood around the farming land within the valley, with the railroad assisting with the tourism and transport for the town, while there's a few roads that lead out of Shining Time.
In town, Fred, Daphne, Willow and Shaggy had been down by a cafe nearby the train station to think about what they're going to do, with Velma having gone off to the nearby library to find anything that can help.
"Like, this might be the longest I've been apart from Scooby." Shaggy commented to Fred and Daphne, the two of them silently agreeing with Shaggy. "I just hope he and Braedey are alright."
"I agree with you." Willow nodded.
"They have to be, Shaggy. They've also got Rose with them." Daphne pointed out softly. "But the biggest question would be where in the world they've ended up in the first place."
"That's the mystery we need to solve, and to find out what's going on." Fred now stated, then he saw Velma walk up with what might be a map in hand. "Velma."
"Velma, did you find anything?" Daphne asks hopefully.
"Please tell us." Willow pleaded.
"Well, I did my best to try and find something. I've been looking at this map." Velma pulls out the map and shows the others. "Take a look at these mysterious shadowy lines. They look like straight railroad tracks... but I can't see any tracks around here, except the ones the trains travel on."
"Weird." Daphne mused. "And some of those lines seem to intersect here at Muffle Mountain."
"But, how does this help us try and find Braedey, Scooby and Rose?" Willow finally asked aloud.
"I'm sure we'll find a way." Velma reassured to Shaggy. "Besides, I'm sure we'll find something to help us."
"Why don't we go over to the station and see what we can find?" Fred now suggested. "Maybe we can find some clues there."
"Good idea." Daphne agreed.
The five of them now go ahead and they began to make their way towards the train station, the theme of railroading as clear as day, especially with the wind direction piece up on the roof having a train silhouette on it.
Once they get to the station, the gang took notice that they did get some glancing looks from people, but they were not being hounded by those like back home in Coolsville. Guess not that many people knew about who they are further out in smaller towns or so.
"So, where do we start?" Velma questioned.
"Split up and search for any clues, anything to give us a lead." Fred answered. The gang go ahead and they begin to look about as calmly as they can to try and find anything to help them find what happened to their friends may be, or give any indication of their whereabouts.
"Found anything?" Willow asked.
"Nothing yet." Shaggy answered.
"Still searching." Daphne called back.
"Guys, look at this. This picture I found in the lost and found." Velma pulls out what looks to be a drawing done by someone. It shows of a small boy in a red/white shirt with blue pants, up in a green meadow with what looks like a set of railroad tracks and a set of buffers at the end. "Take a look at the signature."
Daphne takes a look. "'Burnett B. Stone'..."
Willow looked over at the redhead. "Daphne, don't you have a grandfather named Burnett?" She questioned.
"Actually, I have an Uncle Verner, Murray, and Ted, as well as Uncle John 'J.J' Maxwell and Uncle Charley, and there's also Auntie Maggie and Auntie Olivia Dervy, and there's also my cosuin Danica LeBlake." Daphne recounted.
"Whoa... Did not expect that." Willow commented.
"But I can't recall someone in my family with the name of Burnett." Daphne pouted in frustration as she looks at the signature. "I feel like I should, though."
"Like, maybe your memory is there, but you just need some help to get it back." Shaggy took a guess.
"Excuse me." Fred now looked to a woman at the front desk. She has short black hair with blue eyes, a soft smile, while wearing a red stationmaster's uniform with cap. Her name is Stacey Jones, and she happens to be Shining Time Station's Manager. "Can you please help us with something?"
"Of course. Anything for you." Stacey answers to Fred. "What do you need?"
"What can you tell us about this painting?" Velma ventured, showing the station manager the painting she found. "What can you tell us about Burnett Stone?" She asked.
"Oh, I see." Stacey looked at the picture with a soft smile and giggled. "It's hard to believe Burnett could have ever looked that happy." She sighs softly. "I was told that he used to work on this railroad. But he never leaves the other side of the mountain now."
"Really? Did something happen?" Velma inquired.
"I'm afraid his wife passed away years ago." Stacey answered solemnly.
"That's a sad tale, no doubt about it." Daphne sighed. She looked at the painting. "He lives somewhere up on Muffle Mountain?" She inquired.
"Yes. He prefers the silence up there." Stacey nodded. "But he never leaves the other side."
"I see..." Daphne mused.
A little later, after thanking Stacey for the help she could give them, the gang made their way along through town, all of them now in thought about this new person Burnett Stone.
"Maybe he might know something..." Velma took a guess.
"To where Braedey, Rose, and Scooby had gone?" Shaggy questioned.
"That might not be a bad idea, Shaggy." Willow nodded back to him. "However, we might not want to push our luck just yet, just in case we're not right and we end up right back where we started."
Fred now took notice of Daphne's silence and her look of thought. "Something on your mind, Daphne?" He questioned.
"I don't know, but I feel like I might know who this Burnett Stone is." Daphne answered. "It's a nagging feeling I've got in the back of my head, like it's telling me that I have some kind of connection or something."
"You thinking that you might be related?" Willow took a guess.
"Maybe..." Daphne mused, then looked in the direction of Muffle Mountain. "Just maybe, Willow..."
~*~*~
Meanwhile, up on part of Muffle Mountain, there is a cavern that's hidden within the mountain, concealed from the sight of anyone. Inside this cavern is a man, who has treated this cavern like it meant the entire world to him.
This man stands around 6ft 10" tall, who looks to be in his 60's, with fair slightly wrinkled skin, faded short brown hair and soft blue eyes. He is wearing a black shirt under a brown leather jacket, blue jeans, and cowboy boots. This is Burnett Stone.
Burnett had found this old cavern long ago, and he had configured it into a workshop of his own. However, he's stayed in this cavern on this side of the mountain and his home for most of his life, even up to when his wife Tasha sadly passed away due to cancer, leaving him lost and alone.
"One day, Tasha, I'm going to drive this engine, and I'll take you with me." A young Burnett voice spoke in his head.
"Promise you will, Burnett. Promise!" A young Tasha asked.
"I promise." Young Burnett promised back to Tasha.
But, he never let her legacy die down, as he had something to help remind him of her forever. It sat in a part of the shed, waiting for its moment. It has purple flanged wheels, with golden traction rods and silver piston rods. On the front, it has golden headlamps, and a golden whistle was on top of a purple body.
As Burnett looked at the object, he suddenly heard the footsteps of someone coming up. He immediately knew that someone has now entered the cave. He quickly turned around with the flashlight in hand, and he saw that it was Scorcher standing at the doorway.
Scorcher is a lean, muscular young man of average height with a slightly tan skin tone, black eyes, spiky pink-colour hair, and has abnormal sharp canines; he has a scar on the right side of his neck, hidden by his scarf. He has on an open-collar, one-sleeved long black overcoat, which is tucked in. The sleeve covers his left arm with a faux leather brown armband, leaving his mark, as well as his entire right arm, consequently exposed, a leather brown belt around his waist with an oval-shaped silver buckle, white knee-length trousers with black ribbon ties, a thick black wristband on his left wrist, and black open-toed sandals.
"Scorcher. It's been some time." Burnett commented with a soft smile.
"Same to you, Burnett." Scorcher shows a smile back. "And you're still looking as good as ever."
"Same to you. How did you find this place?" Burnett asked.
"I never forget a face, let alone that of a mountainside workshop." Scorcher replied back. "Don't worry. Your secret is safe. I won't tell anyone."
"See that switch on the wall?" Burnett now points the torch light over to a switch on the wall. "Put in on." He asked to Scorcher.
"Of course." Scorcher looked over and he flipped the switch, the lights inside the cavernous workshop now turning on, revealing what's in the corner of the workshop. "No way..." Scorcher walked up to look on.
There, sitting on some railroad tracks in the far corner of the workshop, is a small steam engine. It looks like that of a heavily-modified Great Western Railway (GWR) 101 Class 0-4-0 tank engine, one that's been shortened and has been outfitted with a curvier shape and style. The cab section is open to look backwards. The engine is painted in a red violet colour with gold headlamps on her front footplate, tail lamp, gold buffers, smokebox, funnel top, dome, whistle, side rods, and lining around the boilers. A golden dome sits on top of its boiler, as the funnel is enlarged with a flaring top, and on the tanks is the name Lady written in gold.
"No way..." Scorcher looks on with curious eyes. "I guessed there was something mysterious about this Mountain." He walks around to look at the engine.
"Yes. All mountains have their own special secrets, Scorcher. Shouldn't surprise someone like you, but it be surprising to see something like this." Burnett said as Scorcher stared at the engine, and walked around the other side of it.
"That, I can agree with you, especially after what I've seen." Scorcher looked over at Burnett. "Is there anything I can do to help?" He asked.
"Sure." Burnett nodded softly, then he hands Scorcher a rag nearby. "You can help me dust her off. This engine's name is Lady." He said to Scorcher with a soft smile, looking at the engine.
"Lady... that's a nice name." Scorcher smiled as he looked at the little engine, then he frowned. "Wait. Why is she locked up here in this workshop?" He questioned.
"She isn't. She's safe from harm." Burnett clarified then began to tell Patch about Lady's story. "A long time ago, I made a terrible mistake as Lady's caretaker. An evil diesel had found Lady, and he threatened to destroy her. He chased her, and I used up all of her coal. I made her go too fast, and the diesel crashed her. After that, I brought Lady here in Muffle Mountain, and put her back together as best I can, but I haven't been able to... to bring her to life. To make her steam again." Burnett places a hand on Lady's boiler, and runs his hand along it, feeling the coldness inside. "Scorcher, she's as precious as pure gold."
Burnett hopes one day, in all his life, he'll be able to get Lady fired up, and relive what he loved most, and to see his beloved little engine run under her own steam once again...
