"So, you're saying that you won't help me?" Rose asked as we exited the pool house. She was being overly dramatic…again
"I've got a quiz in Geometry." I explained. I was really just trying to find a way to not get stuck in her drama.
"Rhiannon, you don't understand. Sunmer and Lindsay. They're full on dating now. So, I need a new girlfriend." She remarked.
"Okay then you should just find a new girlfriend." I proposed.
"That won't work. It needs to be someone who will make Summer." She replied.
"You shouldn't start dating someone just to make Summer jealous." I pointed out. That really wouldn't be fair to the girl…or to Summer.
"There are other reasons." She argued. I looked at her incredulously. "I just can't think of them right now. Let's break bread and discuss what we're going to do."
"Where's my calculator?" I asked. I then realized something. "It's in your room."
She needed to get her own even though she didn't have a math class this semester. I also couldn't believe that they wouldn't let us use our phones for calculators.
"You know what else is in my room?" She asked.
"What? What's in your room?" I replied in irritation.
"My yearbook which is full of fresh faces that I could date." She stated. "We could whittle the list down to about 20 finalists."
"That's a bad idea." I told him. "Actually, it's one of the stupidest things that I have ever heard you say. I should hit you."
"Come on. It's a new era." He stated.
For some reason, the two of us didn't say anything until we got to the kitchen.
"Rose said it. It's a new era." Dad remarked.
"It is a new era and I think I just found a new girlfriend." She explained.
"Here in the kitchen?" Mom quipped.
"Now Rose shops for girls in the yearbook now." I replied. "It's like online dating without the words."
She probably would be better off doing online dating, but I couldn't see her getting her profile down to a reasonable length.
"Let's see. There's Tina Wu." Rose replied. "She's captain of the acapella team and improv team. She's musical, she's witty and she's from a different culture than me."
"Are you sure you're ready to start dating, Sweetie?" Mom asked. "You've been through a lot with Holly."
"Should she mope?" Dad argued. "If it was up to your mother, I'd still be working for the names at the practice and complaining about high-priced lawsuits."
"Totally. Rhiannon, would you rather I go for the Wu or keep talking about Holly?" Rose questioned. She was really making me want to hit her, but I wasn't violent.
"Never use that phrase again." I told her.
"Let's just toast to the new era." Mom suggested before we clanged our mugs against each other. I didn't know why it even needed to be a new era. The one I was in was pretty good now.
Later, I was with at school with Kaitlin by my side as Rose discussed what just happened.
"So, a simple no from The Wu would have sufficed. She didn't need to laugh in my face." She said. You know she would probably respond better to being called Tina. Most people liked being called by their first names.
"Maybe she knows you call her The Wu." Kaitlin quipped as some girl said hi to her. I didn't know that other girls even knew her name.
"What about her?" I questioned.
"No. Tiffany Rosenberg is a big no. We took a trip to Sea World. It involved me talking to the dolphins." She explained. I couldn't help but wonder if she was afraid to date another Jewish girl.
"I haven't heard that story in forever." Kaitlin replied with a smile. Were they just not going to tell me about it then? "How about I just point to a girl and you tell me whether or not you'd date her?"
"She'd also have to want to date me." Rose added.
They went through a few girls and I couldn't help but be a little embarrassed. Did she seriously not have any better ideas?
"Are you shopping for girlfriends in the quad?" Holly asked as she walked up to us.
"I told her it was a bad idea." I declared.
"Can I play?" Holly asked. "What I wouldn't love to take a girl from Cohen again."
"Hey Holly, do you want to go on a date with me?" Rose asked. Okay, that I didn't think that I was okay with.
"I think the whole dating your best friend's sister is off-limits." Holly replied. Okay, that was news to me. No, not being against them dating, but that she considered me her best friend.
"Why are you looking for a girlfriend here anyway?" I questioned. "You know most girls think you're a loser."
"Most doesn't mean all of them." She stated. She was a pretty girl at least, but she was definitely weird…and narcissistic…and kind of a pain in the ass sometimes. "You know what I just came up with a new idea. I'm going to let you find me a girlfriend."
"What?" I asked.
"Well you seem to think all of my other ideas are bad, so you're in charge of finding me love." She replied.
"I would but Kaitlin and I have something to do." I lied.
"We're not doing anything until tomorrow." Kaitlin replied. Oh fuck me. "I'm seeing my dad after school and he wants to keep it to just me and Marissa. I also have to go to my locker."
She walked away and Rose did as well leaving me with Holly.
"I'm not sure that I like this new era." I commented.
"So who are you going to ask?" She inquired.
"I don't know!" I responded before I walked away.
I tried to think of anyone that I knew that I could set Rose up with. I then remembered that I didn't know a lot of people. I could ask someone from the soccer team, I was pretty sure that there were plenty of lesbian or bisexual girls there. But then again, I didn't know if Rose would even want to
After school, I decided to come up with an idea. I figured that most of the girls at school didn't want to date Rose, so I would ask someone who wasn't from the area. It was a bit of a longshot since she was didn't seem like she was Rose's type. Of course, Rose might have accepted any girl as his type as long as she wasn't ugly. Out of the four of us, Rose was probably having the best day, despite being the only not in a relationship.
"Where are you going?" Kaitlin asked.
"I thought you were doing something with Marissa." I replied.
"Well Marissa bailed to stalk our ex-maid and I don't have a car." She explained. Why was she their ex-maid now?
"Let's go out on a date." I suggested. I was glad that I didn't have to go through with my crazy idea.
"Aren't you supposed to be finding Rose a girlfriend?" She inquired. I sighed. Why was she so intent on making this happen? The only reason that I could think of was that it would make Rose less likely to annoy us…which I supposed was valid. "So, do you have any ideas?"
"I have one." I replied before I started to look around the parking lot. I thought that she might have been in the theatre which was in the separate building than the rest of the school.
"She and Marissa had a fight." I declared. That didn't surprise me. "Alright, let's go inside. You know this is probably a terrible idea."
"Well I want to see where it goes." She declared before I walked inside.
"Olivia?" I asked as I walked inside. I was really nervous. Even though we were partners, I still didn't know her that well and I wasn't entirely sure that she would even want to go out with my sister.
"Hey Rhiannon. What are you doing here?" Olivia asked as she stepped out.
"I need to talk about you." I explained.
"So do you have any auditions soon?" She asked.
"Not at the moment. I'm supposed to shoot another episode of The Valley soon." I answered. "So I need to talk to about my sister. She wants me to help her find a new girlfriend."
"And you wanted to ask me if I knew anyone." She guessed. "I don't think that they're too into blind dates."
"I actually wanted to know if you were someone." I corrected. "I wanted to ask you to go out with her."
"You want me to go out with her?" She repeated. I hoped she wouldn't laugh. "Are you sure that's a good idea considering who I am?"
"I mean I don't think either of us are famous enough that the paparazzi care about us." I pointed out.
"Okay, fair point, but I'm not really sure if she's my type. I don't even know if I like girls." She told me.
"Will you please just consider. You could go on one date with her and if doesn't go well, you won't have to do it again." I offered. "Also, please don't tell her I asked you."
I had a feeling that she would and I also had a feeling that Rose wouldn't be upset about it considering that was what he asked me to do. Well she might be a little freaked out about dating a celebrity. I then went back to Kaitlin.
"So, do you wanna get ice cream and come back after Rose shows up?" I asked. She just answered me with a kiss. "I take it that's a yes."
Later, we went back to the Bait Shop to see that Rose was pushing some equipment.
"I think all of this manual labor is affecting my vibe." She declared.
"You don't have a vibe." Kaitlin pointed out.
"Do I look tough to you?" She asked me. I didn't think she wanted me to answer that.
"You're doing it wrong." I explained. "So how are you doing right now?"
I was wondering if Olivia had talked to her yet. Of course, she might not have known where to find her.
"I'm okay." Rose replied.
"Hey, Rhiannon, Rose." Olivia greeted us before she looked at Rose. "Do you want to come here tomorrow night?"
"I'm not really sure why I would come here on my day off." Rose remarked as she looked over the actress in surprise.
"Because I want you to buy me dinner." Olivia explained.
"Hey Rose, there's a clogged toilet in the ladies' room." Alex said as she walked by. With that Olivia walked away from her.
"Looks like you have a date tomorrow night." Kaitlin commented.
"She was asking me out on a date?" Rose asked.
"Yes, you told me to find you a girlfriend." I reminded her.
"But I don't know if I want to go on a date with Olivia Rodrigo." She argued. Why was she making this so difficult? "I'll go if you two go with me."
"I don't think that would be a very good idea." I replied. I knew it would be kind of weird going on a date with Rose there, even though Kaitlin might be able to distract me.
"It'll be fine, Rhi." Kaitlin declared. She knew that I became more agreeable when she called me that. "We accept your terms."
"It's not even a double date. It's a group hang." Rose said. I was pretty sure that wasn't even a real thing.
"Are you even sure that Olivia will want to go on a double date?" I asked.
"It's not a double date. It's a group hang." Rose reiterated.
"We're leaving now." I declared before taking Kaitlin with me.
"You know we're going on that double date." She told me before Rose texted me to let me know that Olivia said yes.
The following day, the three of us were at school together when we noticed Summer. Well I didn't think Rose noticed her because she kept talking.
"Summer." I remarked.
"I don't think I'd go for that." Rose declared.
"No, you idiot, Summer's here." Kaitlin said. She then lowered her voice to a whisper. "Don't tell her you have a date."
"Alright, we can keep it on the down low." Rose agreed. I was pretty sure that she would only last a few seconds.
"Hello, Rhiannon, Kaity, Rose." She greeted us.
"Summer." Rose replied before blurting out. "I have a date!"
So much for keeping it on the down low. She was always bad at keeping secrets. Not to mention that she probably had negative amounts of game. I wondered if I would owe Olivia anything for her agreeing go to out with Rose.
"Good for you." Summer replied. "I hope you have fun following Rhiannon and Kaitlin around."
"I have my own date with a human girl." Rose replied as Holly and Marissa walked over. Did she think that Rose would go out with a non-human girl, of course knowing my sister and her obsession with comics, there was a possibility that she might.
"Cohen has a date with a real, live girl." Summer replied in mock surprise. "Coop, we have to alert the Orange County Register."
At this point, Summer and Holly and walked away.
"So, if Rose is abandoning you for his big date maybe the three of us can hang out together." She offered. I wasn't aware that the two of them were speaking again, but I supposed that was a good thing.
"We have a date too." Kaitlin replied. I wasn't sure if she was still mad at her for blowing her and her father off yesterday. "How are things with you and Hannah?"
"They're not, but I should probably get to class." Marissa said, "Well have fun on your date."
So it seemed like her and Hannah were over…or something. It was hard enough keeping track of my own drama and I really didn't want to keep track of anyone else's, especially Marissa's.
One thing that I realized in class was that I didn't have any idea what to wear for a double date. Kaitlin and I were usually pretty casual whenever we went out. Should I wear heels? No, we were going to The Bait Shop which was on the pier and heels and the pier didn't go together well.
"Are you ready to go?" Kaitlin asked me that night in the pool house. "Rose is getting tired of waiting."
"Rose doesn't like waiting period." I pointed out. "I don't see why we have to do this."
"Because she won't go if you don't." She remarked. "Besides, you know he'll be less annoying if she has a girlfriend and he won't follow us around the time."
We went to the Bait Shop where CHVRCHES was playing.
"You know I've always liked that girl in that song of theirs." Rose commented before she noticed Olivia. I felt a little overdressed considering that I was wearing my dress was from a designer. I couldn't help it if these people kept giving me clothes to wear.
"This isn't going to go well." I told Kaitlin. I was pretty sure that Rose was going to do something to screw things up, because she usually did things to screw things up…though sometimes it was Marissa who screwed this up, but she wasn't there. She was really the bad influence on me.
"You worry too much." Kaitlin replied.
Rose went to get her and things were immediately awkward between us. It was like no one knew what to say to each other. I was pretty sure it was because none of us had ever been on a double date before. I knew that Rose, Kaitlin and I hadn't and I didn't see Olivia as the type to go on double dates. Of course, I wasn't even sure if she had ever been on a date. She grew up in the spotlight, unlike me.
"This should be great, really great and not at all awkward." Rose commented. I wasn't sure if she was being sarcastic or not.
One thing that I had realized since I had never listened to the band's albums was that they were a little more poppy than I thought they were. It was no wonder why Rose liked them so much. The music was danceable, but I still didn't think that I was that good of a dancer. It also wasn't quite EDM either.
"So, this night is awesome." Rose declared.
"You know saying it eight times doesn't make it more true." I declared. I still wasn't having a good time. If people didn't know better, they might think that I was on my period. Of course, mood swings was a side effect of using hormone replacement therapy.
"Maybe we should get something to eat." Kaitlin suggested.
There wasn't a lot of food. In fact, the only food they really had was chicken wings.
"This isn't going well." I told Kaitlin once we were in the bathroom.
"At least it can't get any worse." Kaitlin replied as we walked out of the bathroom. Didn't she know that she wasn't supposed to say that?
"I think it just did." I responded as I noticed that Simmer was there with Lindsay and Marissa. Maybe we should have had the date somewhere else.
At that point, the band started to sing this song that I had heard on Legacies. It was called "Miracle" and I had to admit that I did feel like dancing to it at least.
It wasn't long before Rose and Olivia came across Summer and Lindsay. I wondered if it would be more entertaining to watch than the actual show.
Of course, it became more awkward when Marissa came over to Kaitlin and I.
"So, what are you doing here?" I asked Marissa.
"Summer wanted me to come." Marissa explained. "You know I can't help but feel that girl with Rose looks familiar."
"That's because she's Olivia Rodrigo. She goes to our school and she's in my Theatre class."
"How did Rose get a date with her?" Marissa asked.
"I talked Olivia into asking her out." I replied. I felt that I shouldn't say that I needed to talk Rose into going and that was why we were there.
"This is awesome." Rose replied.
"So awesome." Summer agreed. I was pretty sure that both of them were being sarcastic.
"Maybe we should go watch the band." Lindsay suggested. Yeah, that would probably be a better idea than what was going on.
"That might be a good idea." I agreed as they walked away.
One thing that I quickly noticed was that Summer couldn't stop looking at Rose. It was kind of entertaining but it was also uncomfortable. It seemed to be uncomfortable for everyone involved except for Rose, who didn't seem to notice.
I realized that I needed some air from the discomfort that was inside. Kaitlin followed me outside.
"So, are you having a good time?" I asked sardonically.
"Okay, so maybe this is kind of awkward." She stated.
"That's the understatement of the year." I told her.
"Why are you so mad at me?" She questioned.
"Because these past few days, I have had to do things that I don't want to do." I explained. "I didn't want to find Rose a new girlfriend and I didn't want to come on this stupid double date and I sure as hell don't want to be in there right now."
"Then why did you come?" She challenged.
"You would have gotten mad at me if I didn't." I argued. "You'd probably say that I was being selfish. Well if it's being selfish to not want to be uncomfortable and miserable, I want to be selfish."
"I'm sorry." She replied. "I shouldn't have pushed you to come. You know through all of this focusing on Rose and Olivia, I never once told you how pretty you look. Maybe we should just go home right now."
"Do you think Rose would be okay with me leaving her here?" I asked.
"She can walk or maybe she can get a ride with Marissa," She suggested. "So, do you know what Caleb is being charged with?"
"I don't, but it could be any number of things considering all of the corruption that he has." I remarked. I was glad that I wasn't related to him, although he seemed to be much different from the people that were related to him. I couldn't help but wonder if he was really Kirsten's father because they really weren't alike at all. "We should at least tell Rose that we're leaving."
At that point, I noticed Olivia was leaving.
"So sorry, I don't think I want to do this anymore." She stated. "Rose clearly isn't over her ex and I don't want to be in the middle of this."
"Well thanks for doing it." I told her.
"You look really pretty." Kaitlin added. I didn't expect her to be as hot as she was.
At that moment, Summer and Lindsay walked out and Rose followed behind her. For someone that was supposed to be over her, she had a bad way of showing it. Olivia seemed to be right about her. I knew that only bad things would come from her continuing to talk to Summer and it wouldn't improve his standing with Lindsay.
I decided to call my dad to tell him that I was coming home.
"You don't want to come home right now." He told me.
"Why not?" I asked uneasily.
"Well Julie decided to throw an impromptu dinner party and it would probably just be uncomfortable for you."
"Well it's pretty uncomfortable here." I pointed out.
"Well don't say that I didn't warn you." He said before I hung up and sighed.
"What's wrong?" Kaitlin asked.
"Your mom is throwing a party at my house." I explained. Why she couldn't do it at her own house I didn't know.
"Seriously?" She questioned.
"Are you surprised?" I responded. It wasn't like it was out of character for her.
"Okay you have a point." She replied. "So, do you think there's anyone who would want to date Rose?"
"I don't think it's a good idea for anyone to date Rose if she won't stop talking about Summer and she needs to stop making things worse for Summer either."
"I have a better idea." She stated. "We can't let this date consist of neither of us having fun. Let's go get some ice cream."
I was still feeling kind of hungry considering the chicken wings weren't very big and they also weren't very good. I began to understand why no one ate at the club. That was probably why so many people left drunk. I assumed that the reason was that the club didn't want to spend money on food since they were clubs and not restaurants. I was just excited to get some ice cream and I was happy to be with Kaitlin despite how awful the night was going. At least she hadn't intentionally done anything bad.
"So why did you agree to go on the double date?" She asked.
"Because you know that I can't say no to you." I replied.
"I won't get offended if you don't want to do something." She pointed out. "I love you and I respect you. After all that we been through that should not surprise you."
"I love you too." I reciprocated.
"Do you want to go back to my room?" She asked. "We could just cuddle if you don't want to do anything else?"
"Okay." I agreed.
So Rhiannon tried setting Rose up with Olivia to miserable results for everyone involved. Will Summer and Rose get back together and what new roles will Rhiannon take? Please don't forget to review.
