The military base.
"Oh... oh my..." Saeko whispered as they saw the military base as they were parked on the side of a mountain road, and 10s of thousands of zombies were outside of the military base, as a helicoptor was returning to the base. Even from where they were, they could hear the sounds of gunfire as the military shot into the hoard of zombies to kill as many as possible.
Rika clicked her teeth and turned her head away.
"Should... we help them?" Rei asked Naruto, who was stone faced as he looked on.
"We can't, we couldn't help them if we tried. Eventually, they will run out of ammo, and their walls they erected around their safe haven will crumble when the hoard gets to it. All we can do is hope they manage to get as many people out as possible before that happens." Naruto didn't like how powerless he felt to help people. It sucked, and he could tell that there were hundreds of civilians in the camp that needed help. There were a lot of people there that were going to die.
They were all silent.
Alice held Naruto's hand as she looked at the military base with downturned, tear filled eyes. Her heart screamed at her to ask, to beg, Naruto to save the people down below. The words caught in her throat before she could say them, because even a child like her could see the sheer vastness of the zombie hoard that had gathered and new that with their RV and small numbers, they could do absolutely nothing to help the people.
"I hate this." Shizuka whispered.
"Yeah, but I wanted you all to see this. Times are about to get even tougher, and there are times we will have to choose between what feels good in the moment, and what will be good for us long term. Those people chose feeling safe, over being safe. Most of them will die..." Naruto spelled it out why he stopped on the side of the road to show them this sight. Dozens of zombies were being killed every few minutes, but the gunfire was so loud in the silent area that more zombies were just going to be added to the ranks to replace the ones that got killed.
His words were met with more silence.
There was a flicking nose as Rika lit up her lighter and started to smoke a cigarette. Naruto reached out and plucked it from her lips, before he licked his fingers and pinched the tip of it to stop it from burning. He returned it back to her, showing that he did not approve of her smoking around them.
"Hey, after this, I need a smoke."
"Save it for when you're by yourself then, none of the rest of us smoke." Naruto told her, and he started to walk by to the RV, and him walking back was a sign for the rest of them to join him. Rika sighed, before she put her pack away, nodded her head in understanding, and followed behind the rest of them.
-Days Later-
The last zombie in the area fell to the ground without it's head.
"Hmmmmm... it's an older town, the buildings are in okay condition. I see farmland, but no natural barriers to help keep zombies at bay." Saya examined the area as Saeko and Rei took out zombies around her. They were in one of the rural towns scattered across Japan, and they had split up into 3 groups in order to kill any zombies that they could find.
Naruto was with Rika as the two of them went off by themselves, and Shizuka was with Alice in the RV where it was safe for them.
"Hah... hah..." Saeko wiped her lower lip of saliva, her face heated after the near 30 kills she had gotten to do. She glanced over at Rei, who had only killed 7 zombies. She seemed far more reluctant to kill, not enthusiastic about it. She lacked a bloody instinct that could turn somebody into a natural born killer, and she looked at her fallen kills with pity.
Saeko did not.
"So, food, but no safety." Rei summarized.
"Well, that side of the village is against a cliff, and it's next to a mountain and a river, so fresh water and SOME natural barriers... but that direction has nothing to stop zombies from just overunning us if we build a base here." Saya changed the way she phrased it. There were some natural barriers, but not nearly enough for them to ensure that zombies couldn't get in.
"We want some to get in though." Saeko reminded Saya.
They wanted some zombies to wander into the village, so that zombies could get killed when they arrived, thus slowly removing the numbers of zombies in Japan. They could build a wall around the area that wasn't as guarded off, and there were other things that could be put into place for village protection.
Rei almost pissed herself when she felt something bite her ankle.
"AH!"
It was Kurama.
"Oh... I thought you got bitten by a zombie for a second with how you screamed." Saya was holding her chest from fright, not having expected to hear Rei scream like a little girl out of nowhere. She wasn't the only one, Saeko had drawn her sword the second she heard the scream.
"I almost pee'd..." Rei collapsed to her butt.
Kurama jumped onto her lap and delivered a rolled up piece of paper that was attached to the collar around his neck. Saeko leaned down and picked Kurama up, but he didn't like being picked up by her and nipped at her forearm to get her to drop him. He went off when he realized Naruto wasn't among them, and followed Naruto's nearby scent.
-With Naruto-
"Nice fox."
"He's a well trained fox, made sure of that myself." Naruto unrolled the piece of paper that was on Kurama's collar, and he looked at the message that had been written to him. "Other than a small opening for zombies to come through, this village is an amazing place. The buildings are older, but in good condition, it has farmland too, and a river nearby with a forest right next to it." Naruto had looked all around the village.
He picked up Kurama and allowed the fox to sit on his head, before he continued to look over the written message.
"You want zombies to come in?" Rika asked as she looked at a corpse that she had killed with a knife to the head.
"Not a lot, but some at a time. We don't want the zombie problem to get taken care of eventually. We don't want a place that is completely open, but we don't want a completely closed off place. The cliffside is a good escape route, since zombies can't climb or go up slopes well." Naruto could see a few decent escape routes that could be built into the village in a matter of weeks.
"Hm, yeah, I can see that." Rika glanced over at Naruto.
She wanted to gossip right now, and ask Naruto which of the girls he was traveling with that he wanted to do it with. She could tell he was in a serious mood right now, and gossiping about sex now that they were alone would most likely ruin the serious mood they had going on at the moment.
"Okay, so we need a small work force to get the buildings cleaned out... and another work force to get some basic defenses set up around the village. Otherwise, this is a great place." Naruto mumbled to himself as he paced in a circle. He wasn't talking to Rika, and she fully understood that. She stayed on guard and kept an eye out for zombies while Naruto thought over what could be done to make the village into a good base of operations, a home village that people could move into and protect.
"How many other places like this have you guys visited?" Rika asked.
"About a dozen, maybe more. Most of the time they either don't have any natural protections, there are no nearby rivers, the farmlands aren't great, or it is on a flat land. This is almost a perfect place, I actually don't have high hopes we even CAN find a better place than this." Naruto responded when she asked him a question, and he stopped pacing and remembered all of the other places they had stopped by, only to find it completely deserted and not fit for a zombie setting. They weren't even worth mentioning.
He wanted to find the perfect place, but he was starting to think that the 'perfect' place didn't actually exist.
Almost perfect might need to be good enough.
"... Yeah, I think this might be the place." Naruto stated as he took 2 pieces of paper out of the holder on Kurama's collar and started to write 2 separate messages. One of the messages was going to go to Hiashi to tell him to mobilize the remaining Hyuga, Kohta, and Asami to have them all move to this village in order to strengthen it. He was sure they could make good use of the farmland and prepare it before summer.
It was still spring, it was right now the best time to get all of the worst of the world done to make the village ready for living.
He would send another message to the Sex Cult, and he hoped against hope that he could convince them to abandon their sex cult ways in order to get them to come and work on making the village a more workable place to live. There were a good number of survivors who lived at the Sex Cult school, and considering that 3 former members of his group were there, it was possible that they could be convinced to come and make the village work.
From the Hyuga house to this village was a 4 day walk.
From the Sex Cult school to this village was about a 5 day walk.
The Hyuga house was only a day and a half walk away from the Sex Cult.
If both groups linked up together in the village and worked with each other, the combined forces of the two groups could easily speed of the process of the village becoming a great home base. Naruto finished writing his messages.
"Okay, Kurama-" Naruto held out his arm like one would a bird, and Kurama jumped down onto his forearm. "This message is for Hiashi, and deliver it to him FIRST. Make sure he gets the message before you deliver this message." Naruto showed the message to Kurama, and he made sure the fox understood what was being asked of him. Once he was certain the fox understood the assignment, Naruto showed him the second message. "After you deliver that message, guide Hiashi and the Hyuga to the Sex Cult where you will deliver THIS message to Takashi." Naruto stated as he showed the second message again.
"Sex Cult?" Rika asked, very alarmed.
"Yeah, I want to get them to come here and help rebuild. Right now most of them are pregnant, but they aren't very far along. If we wait too long, they won't be able to make the trip. Hopefully when Kurama guides Hiashi to the cult, they can help convince them to help." Naruto stated as he sent Kurama off, and the fox zoomed away to do the job it was trained to do.
"Sex Cult." Rika repeated.
"Yeah, it was a bit of a problem, but the problem should be taken care of by now. Hiashi is a stern guy with strangers, so I'm sure he can convince them that helping is what is best for everyone. I trust Kohta will be able to convince Takashi better than my message can." Naruto didn't have full faith in his rather weak relationship to Takashi. They trusted each other, but it wasn't like he was very close to Takashi.
Kurama was quickly out of sight.
"What now, do we just stay in the village?" Rika asked.
"No, we go and get supplies. Hammers, nails, equipment, and we bring it back to the village. Food, medicine, that kind of stuff is even more important. While they work on building the village up, we're going to focus on supporting their efforts by getting them what they need." Naruto knew it would still be a decent ways away from truly being able to settle down in the village.
The road to society was not an easy one.
