Chapter 19 – The Mind Awakened
The battlefield burned with chaos, the air thick with the acrid smell of molten metal and scorched earth. The Avengers stood together, their backs against one another as Ultron's army surrounded them. Explosions lit up the sky as drones poured in from every corner, their red optics glowing like a sea of fireflies in the dark.
At the forefront stood Ultimate Diamondhead—Ben Tennyson in his crystalline glory. His diamond arms shimmered as his edges glowed faintly with heat from the relentless battle, each strike against Ultron's army sending shards flying and enemies crumbling. He turned to face the Vibranium-armored Ultron, his stance steady, his confidence unwavering.
But then—Ben paused. The glow of his form dimmed as the crystalline surface shimmered with emerald light, and he allowed the Ultimatrix to retract the transformation. In an instant, Ultimate Diamondhead disappeared, leaving Ben standing in its place, his jacket dirtied from the fray but his grin unfaltering.
"Well," Ben said casually, wiping his hands, "guess you can't know everything after all, huh?"
Ultron froze momentarily, tilting his head in a mixture of confusion and irritation. His optics flickered, scanning for whatever Ben could be referring to. "What do you mean by that?" he demanded, his tone cold but with an edge of bewilderment.
Ben crossed his arms, a mischievous smirk spreading across his face. "You think you've got all the answers. You've been pulling strings, playing chess, acting like you're ten steps ahead." He leaned slightly closer, voice filled with smug defiance. "But here's the thing… sometimes, you don't see the checkmate coming."
Ultron's Vibranium shell shifted, his stance growing more rigid. "Explain yourself," he snapped, his tone betraying just a sliver of unease.
Before Ben could respond, the battlefield erupted with a sudden, blinding burst of energy.
Ultron was thrown backward, his Vibranium armor screeching as it skidded across the cracked pavement. The force of the blast sent drones scattering, their formation breaking apart in confusion. Ben shielded his eyes from the light as a powerful new presence descended into the fray.
The glow receded, revealing a figure floating gracefully amidst the chaos. His cape billowed behind him, and his crimson, golden, and green form shone like an otherworldly sentinel. The gem embedded in his forehead—the Mind Stone—radiated a calm yet overwhelming power. His expression was serene, almost unreadable, but his presence commanded immediate respect.
"Whoa," Ben muttered, lowering his arm as he stared at the newcomer. "That's… new."
The Vision landed softly on the ground, his gaze fixed on Ultron, whose battered form was already recalibrating itself.
Ultron rose slowly, his red optics burning with fury. "What… is this?"
Flashback – The Vision's Creation:
Weeks before Sokovia's siege, the Avengers had returned to Avengers Tower after retrieving Loki's sceptre. In the secrecy of the lab, Tony Stark and Bruce Banner analyzed the power source embedded within—its neural network far surpassing anything they'd ever encountered. When Ben arrived, still reeling from the loss of the Omnitrix, Tony pulled him aside.
"You're not the only one who's got to step it up," Tony said, his voice laced with both frustration and determination. He gestured to the Mind Stone. "We've got the mother of all upgrades sitting right here."
Ben frowned. "So what's the plan? Build another Ultron so it can blow up in our faces?"
Tony smirked faintly. "Not Ultron. Something else. Something better." He glanced toward Bruce. "Banner's on board. And frankly… you're the wildcard."
Over the following days, the trio worked tirelessly—using the Mind Stone as the central power core, Vibranium synthesized by the Ultimatrix for a durable body, and Tony's AI framework for its programming. Ben's contributions were critical—the Ultimatrix provided the synthetic Vibranium matrix that made the creation possible, stabilizing the impossible.
What they were creating wasn't just a machine.
It was the next step.
And when the capsule finally opened, revealing a being forged from Mind Stone energy and Vibranium, his eyes flickered with awareness.
"Who… am I?" he had asked, his voice quiet yet resonating with purpose.
"You're the Vision," Tony had said. "And now… we need your help."
Back to the Battle:
The Vision hovered forward, his calm demeanor almost eerie amidst the battlefield's carnage. "Ultron," he said simply, his voice carrying a resonant authority. "Your time is over."
Ultron sneered, his Vibranium plating sparking from the earlier blast. "You think a glorified machine will stop me? You were built because of me. You're nothing but my shadow."
The Vision's eyes glowed faintly. "Perhaps. But even a shadow learns to stand apart from its source."
Without another word, the Vision surged forward, phasing through an incoming drone and tearing it apart from the inside. The Avengers seized the momentum.
Thor summoned lightning, striking through a cluster of drones that attempted to flank them. Wanda unleashed a wave of crimson energy, obliterating a swath of enemies as Pietro darted through the chaos, dismantling drones with blinding speed. Steve's shield ricocheted perfectly between targets, while Natasha and Clint weaved through the melee, striking surgically at vulnerable points.
Ben activated the Ultimatrix, transforming into XLR8 to dart through enemy lines, carving a path and drawing fire away from the others.
The tide of the battle shifted rapidly.
But Ultron, far from defeated, stepped back into the fray, his voice rising above the chaos. "Enough!"
His red optics blazed as he raised both hands. "If I cannot break you, then I will break what you fight for."
The ground beneath Sokovia rumbled ominously. The thrusters below the city pulsed with increasing intensity, and from the ruins emerged a battalion of 100 drones, each breaking formation and moving rapidly—toward the civilians.
The Avengers froze as they realized what was happening.
Wanda's eyes widened. "He's targeting the people."
Clint cursed under his breath, already turning toward the civilians they'd just helped shelter. "They won't stand a chance."
Ultron smirked, his voice dripping with malice. "You can't save them all."
The drones spread out in all directions, their targets clear.
The Avengers, their hearts pounding, stood caught between two impossible choices: defend themselves and risk the lives of hundreds—or abandon the fight and leave Sokovia vulnerable to Ultron's rising destruction.
"Make your choice," Ultron taunted, his laughter echoing through the burning streets.
