Chapter 21 – Fury from Above
The once bustling streets of Sokovia were eerily silent now, transformed into a floating, crumbling battlefield above the Earth. The constant hum of the thrusters beneath the city reverberated through the fractured ground, a grim reminder of what was at stake. The cries of trapped civilians echoed faintly amidst the cacophony of destruction, punctuated by the distant roars of battle.
Ultron stood atop a crumbling spire, his Vibranium frame gleaming under the dim light of the burning sky. His red optics scanned the chaos below as he extended one hand toward his swarm of drones, now amassing in perfect formation.
"Bring me chaos," Ultron commanded coldly. "And bury their hope beneath it."
The swarm obeyed instantly, peeling away from the main battle. One hundred Iron Legion drones took flight in unison, soaring toward the dense cluster of terrified civilians hidden in makeshift shelters. The sound of their thrusters screamed through the air as their weapon systems armed, each one locked onto innocent lives.
At the battlefield's edge, Pietro and Wanda Maximoff paused amidst the fighting. Pietro wiped blood from his temple, glancing at his sister. "They're targeting the people, Wanda."
Wanda turned sharply, crimson energy crackling around her fingertips. "Then we stop them."
She moved to surge forward—but something stopped her. A deep, resonant hum echoed from above, followed by the roar of massive engines.
The Avengers paused mid-battle, looking skyward as a massive shadow loomed over them.
Above Sokovia, descending through the smoke and chaos, was the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. Its immense form cut through the burning sky, a beacon of improbable hope.
Onboard, Nick Fury stood tall in the command center, his expression calm but resolute. His voice was sharp as he addressed the crew. "Deploy the lifeboats. Get those people out of here."
Dozens of small rescue ships launched from the Helicarrier's hangar, each one gliding downward toward the city's surface. Pilots maneuvered expertly, weaving through the crumbling ruins to reach trapped civilians.
On the ground, Clint Barton watched as one of the rescue ships hovered near his position. He turned to Wanda, his face serious but kind. "Maximoff, now's your chance. You've got an out. Both of you do."
Wanda hesitated, her crimson energy faltering for a moment. She looked at the terrified faces of the civilians nearby, then back at Clint.
"Fighting these drones isn't enough," Clint continued. "If you stay here, there's no telling what'll happen. But out there?" He gestured to the Helicarrier above. "You can save lives. Real lives."
Pietro appeared at Wanda's side, his expression uncharacteristically serious. "He's right. Let's go."
Wanda looked torn, her energy surging briefly before dissipating. She nodded.
Clint smirked faintly. "Good choice."
The twins sprinted toward the nearest rescue ship—Pietro with his blinding speed, Wanda shielding others as they moved. She turned to Clint one last time before stepping aboard the craft.
"Thank you," she said simply, her voice filled with quiet resolve.
Clint gave her a nod. "Now go."
The rescue ships carried the Maximoffs and the civilians to safety, leaving the Avengers behind to face Ultron's full wrath.
Back at the heart of the battlefield, Steve Rogers slammed his shield into another drone, shattering it into pieces. Thor swung Mjolnir in a wide arc, summoning lightning to destroy the swarm closing in on him. Natasha fought through the chaos with her signature precision, taking down drones with flawless efficiency.
Iron Man blasted across the battlefield, weaving through incoming fire as he destroyed drone after drone. "Fury, tell me you've got everyone off this rock!" Tony barked through his comms.
"We're working on it, Stark," Fury replied from the Helicarrier. "You focus on keeping that metal menace away from my ships."
Ultron observed from above, his red optics narrowing as he tracked Tony's movement. He stepped forward onto a collapsing ledge, his voice cutting through the chaos.
Tony Stark rocketed into the air, his repulsors flaring, locking onto Ultron's position.
The AI smirked, stepping forward.
"You never learn, do you, Stark?" Ultron mused. "Still believing yourself to be the center of everything."
Tony tightened his stance, adjusting his targeting system. "Yeah, yeah—monologue incoming. Let's just skip to the part where I break you into spare parts."
Ultron chuckled. "Oh, Tony. You won't win."
Then—he lunged forward, his Vibranium-plated form striking with speed and unnatural precision, his fists clashing against Stark's armor, sending him spiraling backward.
Tony stabilized mid-air, preparing a counterattack— Tony slowed in mid-air, locking onto Ultron's position. He hovered above, his suit's weapon systems glowing. "You want me? Fine. Let's dance."
The two charged toward each other, but before Ultron could land a blow, a streak of emerald light tore through the battlefield and intercepted him.
Ultron was thrown backward, slamming into the side of a building with enough force to shatter its foundation. He groaned, his Vibranium armor sparking as he struggled to stand.
Tony landed, bewildered. "Uh… what just happened?"
From the smoke emerged Ben Tennyson.
The Ultimatrix glowed faintly on his wrist as Ben approached, a confident smirk playing on his lips. "Sorry, Stark. You're not his dance partner today."
Ultron rose, his optics burning with rage as he turned to face Ben. "You dare interrupt me?"
Ben raised his arm, slamming the Ultimatrix with purpose. Emerald light engulfed him, and when it faded, Ben stood as Ultimate Echo Echo—his sleek, silver form humming with concentrated sonic energy.
"I dare a lot of things," Ultimate Echo Echo said, his voice distorted but sharp. "Let's see if you can keep up."
Ultron surged forward, his Vibranium claws slashing through the air. Ultimate Echo Echo dodged effortlessly, his movements fluid and precise. With a single motion, he released a sonic blast that rippled through the battlefield, knocking Ultron off balance.
As Ultron recovered, Ben grinned, his glowing optics narrowing. "You think you're the future? Newsflash: The future's already here."
The battle escalated as Ultron charged again, his strikes growing more ferocious. But Ultimate Echo Echo countered each one, using sonic bursts to destabilize Ultron's movements.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Avengers continued fighting the remaining drones, holding the line as the rescue ships evacuated the last of the civilians.
The fate of Sokovia—and the world—hung in the balance.
