Chapter 22 – A Desperate Gambit

The cold, gray corridors of the lunar Incursian base reverberated with deafening sounds of battle. Sparks flew from shattered machinery as Gwen, Rook, and Albedo desperately fought through the chaos. The unstable fusion reactor at the core of the facility crackled ominously, emitting bursts of unstable energy that lit the chamber in eerie, flickering light.
The robot at the center of it all—a towering, multi-limbed monstrosity—moved with terrifying precision. Its Vibranium-enhanced body seemed almost impervious to their attacks, its movements calculated and relentless. Energy cannons fired with unrelenting fury, forcing the trio to dive and dodge amidst the chaos.
Gwen summoned a wave of mana, her glowing hands weaving defensive barriers to shield Rook and Albedo as plasma fire erupted across the room. "This thing isn't slowing down!" Gwen shouted, her voice strained as she maintained the barrier.
Rook, his Proto-Tool in rifle mode, fired off precise energy blasts at the robot's joints, aiming to disable its mobility. The shots landed with pinpoint accuracy, but the robot barely faltered, its reinforced Vibranium armor absorbing most of the impact.
Rook growled, his frustration evident as he ducked behind a shattered console. "Whoever programmed this psychotic robot is going to pay!"
The words seemed to ignite something in Albedo. He paused, his red eyes narrowing as an idea began to form in his mind. "Step back!" Albedo shouted, his voice carrying both desperation and determination. "Both of you—now!"
Gwen hesitated, her mana flickering as she glanced at him. "What are you doing?"
Rook, still firing at the robot, turned sharply. "What are you planning, Albedo?"
Albedo smirked, his tone dripping with arrogance but layered with resolve. "I'm going to do what neither of you can. I'm going to end this."
Before they could protest, Albedo slammed his hand onto his Ultimatrix. Emerald light flared as his body shifted and twisted, transforming into Upgrade—a sleek, black-and-red bio-mechanical alien form capable of merging with technology.
"Keep it distracted!" Upgrade-Albedo shouted, his voice distorted as he launched himself toward the robot.
The fight intensified as Gwen and Rook redoubled their efforts, drawing the robot's attention. Gwen unleashed concentrated mana beams, striking the robot's sensors and forcing it to redirect its firepower. Rook switched his Proto-Tool to blade mode, darting between attacks to strike at the robot's exposed joints, aiming to weaken its movements.
Upgrade-Albedo surged forward, his liquid-like form slipping between the robot's defenses. He merged seamlessly with the machine, his bio-mechanical substance flowing into its circuits, overriding its systems. The robot convulsed violently as Albedo's presence infiltrated its neural core.
Inside the machine's systems, Albedo's consciousness expanded, battling against the complex programming that controlled the robot. Lines of code appeared before him, each one interwoven with subroutines designed to destroy. He pushed forward, his determination fueled by the raw desperation of their situation.
The robot's movements grew erratic as Albedo wrestled with its controls. Its energy cannons misfired, plasma bursts ricocheting harmlessly against the walls. Its limbs spasmed, sparks flying from its joints.
Gwen and Rook watched in awe as the once unstoppable machine began to falter. "It's working!" Gwen exclaimed, her mana glowing brighter as she prepared to shield Albedo from any counterattack.
Rook, still positioned behind cover, smirked. "He's actually doing it…"
Finally, with a deafening crackle of energy, the robot froze. Its optics dimmed, its limbs stiffened, and the entire chamber fell silent.
Albedo emerged from the machine, his Upgrade form dissolving as he transformed back into his Galvan body. He stumbled slightly, breathing heavily, but his signature smirk quickly returned.
"Told you I'd win," Albedo muttered, his tone dripping with smugness.
Gwen crossed her arms, eyeing him critically. "You risked all of us with that stunt."
Rook nodded firmly. "It worked—but don't think this makes you a hero."
Albedo chuckled, brushing off their comments. "Oh, spare me your lectures. The robot's deactivated, isn't it?"
But before anyone could respond—the ground beneath them shook violently.
The reactor core pulsed with unstable energy, its glow intensifying as alarms blared throughout the facility. The walls trembled, cracks spreading rapidly across the structure.
"What's happening?!" Gwen shouted, her mana flaring instinctively to shield the group.
Rook scanned the reactor, his Proto-Tool flashing with warnings. "The meteor—it's launching!"
Albedo's smirk faded, replaced by wide-eyed horror. "No… no, that's impossible. I stopped the robot!"
Rook pointed toward the control panel, which now displayed a countdown—less than a minute remained before the launch sequence completed.
"This whole facility was rigged to fire no matter what!" Rook shouted. "It's a failsafe!"
Gwen's eyes narrowed, her resolve hardening. "We need to get out—now."
The trio sprinted toward the exit, the base shaking violently around them. Debris fell from the ceiling, sparks flying as the reactor core began to overload. Outside, the battle raged on as Plumber forces scrambled to regroup, their focus shifting toward the massive meteor now rising from the lunar surface.
