Character profiles.
Hi everyone,
I am for the most part done with the next chapter, but before I post it I decided it may be nice and also easier for people if I made an character profile for the characters. This way some people whom have never read the novel might learn some things (and be encouraged to read it, please do it is amazing) and also to get an an better understanding of some characters and what I have planned fot them. Please enjoy and hold on a little longer! I have written an large portion of it (between 4000 en 5000 words), but I still need to add some reactions.
Carrie White.
Carrie is an 16 year old female and the only (living) child of Margareth and Ralph White. Her father died before she was born and she was afterwards raised by her mother Margareth. Margareth suffering from mental illnesses, personality flaws and trauma abused her daughter mentally, emotionally and physically. Carrie has blond/strawberry blond hair and brown eyes. Her apperance takes more after her 2013 actrice Chloe Grace Moretz but she has some attributes from other versions. Before her glow up she wears very loose clothes, mostly dresses and skirts and has some acne and greasy hair courtesy of Margareth who sabotages her daughters appereance and Carrie because she feels down at times which make her neglect herself. Carrie is kind and talented but also damaged by years of abuse and bullying from her classmates. She is an bit more like her novels version that she at times has bad thoughts and an desire to hurt the people that have hurt her. Despite that she is not behind redemption and can be very kind and strong willed when needed.
Sue Snell.
Sue is an 17 year old female and the oldest daughter of Eleanor Snell and Mr Snell. Has an 4 year younger sister who looks up to her populair sister. Her sister is an teen athlete and at the moment gone with her coach to an competition, which is the reason why Sue's little sister isn't included in the screening. Sue had an great childhood with an loving, if not at times overbearing family that cares about their social standing (though not as much as some others like the Hargensons and the family is still kind for the most part). Sue is one of those girls whom see to have it all and in a way she does. She is populair, beautiful, smart and never really had anything bad happen to her. Despite that Sue does have some worries. Sue doesn't really know what she wants and can be an bit insecure about living up to peoples standards. I know the book and deleted scenes from the 2013 movie hints that Sue might have some problems with her sexuality (possible asexuality) and the fear of becoming an housewife. It is one of the reasons Carrie (possibly?) makes Sue miscarriage at the end of the novel. I think this would have been something cool and given Sue more dept in the movies, but most ignore the pregnancy plot or make Sue have the baby (2013 version). I have something planned for this. Sue won't have an abortion or miscarriage but she and Tommy will come to an arrangement. Sue is kind, clever, athletic but also cowardly in a way, cares about status and can be hypocritical. She becomes an better person both in the book and movies and I think it says something that she not only survived but also was the only one to survive after having an one on one with Carrie. Most others wouldn't have after Carrie lost her sanity.
Chris Hargenson.
Chris is an 17 year old female and the daughter of John Hargenson and Cecilia (Hargenson) Jones. Her parents divorced when Chris was 12, almost 13 years old. A big part reason for the divorce was the fact that John Hargenson used his money and status to spoil Chris and never punished her for her bullying of other students (he either didn't believe Chris did it or would try to downplay things both for her sake and his own). While not an saint , Cecilia thought Chris went to far at times and tried to teach her daughter some boundries and to control her temper, but whatever punishment she would give Chris would be lifted by John. After the divorce Chris wanted to stay with her father and she saw her mother 2 weekends an month. By the time Chris was 15 she and her mother had an argument and Chris refused to visit her mother afterwards. Chris is an mix of her novel and movie versions. While Chris is capable of truly heinous and evil acts mentioned in the novel (like putting an firecracker in someone elses shoe), she isn't evil for the sake of evil but her entitlement and anger issues make her feel her actions are always justified and her privilaged upbrining has made sure she doesn't know how it is to be on the reciving end of any kind of bullying so she can't empathize with her victims. Still Chris is actually quite an good friend and has her limits. I take inspiration from the novel and the movies (beside 1976 in which she was worse then Billy). Chris in the novel tried to stop Billy from trying to drive over Carrie (unlike 1976 and 2013 movies) and in most movies hestitate to pull the prank. I want to explore that good side and potential to be better. We don't really get information what Chris childhood was like (Mrs Hargenson never gets mentioned in the novel or any of the movies) and what made her the way she is beside some loose hints (mental illness, possible sexual abuse?). That can is too hot even for me (maybe I do an character analyse on her one day, who knows) and because Chris is such an prominent character in the Carrie verse I think it is better if I don't but I love to hear your thoughts on her character!
Tina Blake.
Tina is an 16 year old female and the only daughter of Melinda Blake and Mr Blake. Tina's appeareance is the same as her 2013 version (same as the others par Carrie). Tina in the novel is an cute redhead though she gets nowhere as much attention as in the movies. The first time we meet her is when Chris talks to her after her suspension and they talk about whom have been nominated Prom King and Queen (similair to the scene shown in the 1976 version). Tina is part though of the Ultra's and she and Chris are best friends in the novel. It has been hinted Tina was part of the ''Prank'' or at least knew something. Unlike her movie versions, Tina survives the Black Prom in the novel but lives afterwards isolated, in fear of her role being discovered and possible horrifed and ashamed by what her and the others action caused.
Beside getting an larger role and becoming an brunet (Hollywood, why do you people hate redheads?), Tina in the 2013 seems to have an (minor) heartcondition that Chris mentions. I say minor because Tina seems to be able to do most things without problems, but maybe I am wrong. We all know Tina is Chris best friend and an bully but let's see if we can expand on her an bit with what we know. I think Tina is not entirely heartless as seen by her novel version. This is an populair girl who thrived off attention (something 2013 Tina also seems to enjoy) and after the Prom isolated herself. While you would think that is the bare minimum you would expect from someone after such an traumatic event, especially if she was part of the prank...
It is an bit more complicated.
For those who haven't read the novel, seen the 2002 version or don't understand some things that were deleted from the 2013 version, let me explain. The novel takes place after the Prom has already happend and we get the story through flashbacks and from interviews and articles with multiple people. These were partly shown in the 2002 version and were going to be included in the 2013 version before the final cut. These are really interested and give so much information that isn't talked about like Carrie's grandparents, scientists talking about TK and so on. While an lot of people have an opinion about what happend the conclusion is like this: Carrie gets made the villain. People know some things but not everything what has happend and just how cruel everyone was to Carrie. And with Carrie gone at the end of novel she is an convienent scapegoat. The people that end up surviving the disaster are for the most part traumatised and refuse to talk or talk badly about Carrie. Which is okay understandable. I don't think most people would talk good about someone who killed your loved or loved ones. But the town doesn't take responsibility for the part they played in Carrie's decent into maddness. Sue is the only one that tries to defend Carrie. Instead the town and others blame everything on Carrie (And the ones that pulled the prank, thankfully most hold them also responsible and see them in an bad light) trying to make her out to be some monster with no redeeming qualities and with no good reason for doing what she did (while Carrie might have gone an little to far the townspeople were far from innocent). And I think they need to do that for their own sanity (and others are probably douchy and believe it) because if they admit to others but most importantly themselves how horrible they were and how they tought their kids to act that way, they will have to face they are partly to blame for their children death. So beside Chris, Billy, the people that helped pull the prank, Carrie and Sue and Tommy (who after the Prom are accused of being part of Chris and Billy's plan), the rest of the town are actually given more slack. No one knew Tina was part of the group and she could have used her status as ''poor classmate who survived crazy Carrie's rampage'' to get fame or write an book about it. Jump on the townspeople wagon., instead she dissapeared from public eye. She is in no way an saint and pretty cowardly by running away instead of admitting her role in al of this and maybe this is the reason Tina doesn't seek out fame is fear of being discovered (which is with how Sue afterwards gets treated an very good thing to be afraid off) , but I also think it says something about her as an person.
Back to her 2013 version. I think her heart condition is something to build on. I think it is possible that because of her heart condition Tina was very much doted on, even spoiled. She was treated as if she was delicate and as we known the two most common bullies are extremely spoiled children and people from rough homes ( I mean spoiled in the sense that these kids are let to believe they can do no wrong. I was spoiled materially by my parents but they also learned me and my brother good values and to have respect for others). Tina would fall in the first category. Her parents spoiled her but never truly punished her. I think unlike John Hargenson who is both ignorant and thinking about his repuation, that Tina's parents know a bit more how their daughter can be but they downplay it, make excuses etc. I think the screening has been and will be good for them.
Tina because of her heart condition is an bit insecure about having romantic relationships which makes her act flirty to hide this.
Well if there are any other characters you like to know about let me know! I plan to include others, like Billy Nolan, both the twins, Heather and Vicky etc but I first want to finish the next chapter. Bye!
