Everyone regrouped in the living room. "Okay Roku. We're ready for the next episode," Sirius said.
"Alright. This episode is called, The Badge and The Burden," Roku announced.
"Sounds interesting," Dumbledore said.
The episode starts with a window overlooking Team RWBY's new dorm. Weiss wakes up and gives a big yawn stretching her arms. Ruby, already dressed in her school uniform with the addition of her hood, sneaks up on Weiss and blows into a whistle, causing the heiress to fall out of bed.
The half of the room that didn't laugh at Ruby's antics were wincing at the pain Weiss must be in from that.
"Good morning, Team RWBY!" Ruby greeted.
"What in the world is wrong with you?" Weiss asks. Still on the ground.
Ruby ignores the question and continues. "Now that you're awake, we can officially begin our first order of business."
"Excuse me?" Weiss asks, picking herself up and brushing herself off.
"Decorating!" Yang answers. Like her sister, she and Blake were dressed in their uniforms. Yang's arms were full of random items.
"What?" Weiss asks again.
"We still need to unpack," Blake explains holding up her own briefcase. It opens on its own and the contents spill out. "And clean." She adds nervously.
"They didn't do that last night?" Molly asks.
"They were still likely tired from initiation and crashed onto their beds the second they entered their room," Kingsley replied.
"But don't they have classes soon?" Hermione wondered.
"I don't think it will take that long," Harry said.
Weiss gets up but is knocked back down by Ruby blowing her whistle again. "Alright! Weiss, Blake, Yang, and Ruby have begun their first mission. Banzai!" Ruby cheered. Yang and Blake join in while Weiss watches from the ground.
"Nice to see Blake getting into it," Ginny giggled.
Yang posts a poster of The Achieve Men at an angle. Weiss, now in her uniform, positions a painting of Forever Fall to perfection. Blake puts away some books before noticing that she has one called Ninjas of Love and makes sure no one notices before placing it back.
"Why was Blake trying to hide that book?" Ginny asks nervously.
"Because it's an adult romance novel," Roku explains.
"Yeah, Blake should make sure Ruby doesn't find it," Reamus said.
Ruby uses Crescent Rose to hand the curtains. When she turns around the blade of her weapon cuts off half of the curtains.
Everyone either face palmed or snickered. Sirius was in the latter category. "Smooth Ruby. Very smooth."
The students admired their handy work (the curtains sewed back together) only to find one itty, bitty, little problem. All their beds were stacked in the center of the room.
"How did that happen?" Arthur asked.
"And they didn't notice it until now?" Kingsley said confused.
"This isn't going to work," Weiss said.
"It does seem a bit cramped," Blake noted.
"Maybe we should ditch some of our stuff," Yang suggested.
Ruby had a better idea. "Or we could ditch the beds... and replace them with bunk beds!"
"Where are they going to get bunk beds?" Hermione asked.
"Umm, that sounds incredibly dangerous," Weiss said.
"Why?" Moody asks. "It's not like they're going to stack their beds on top of each other." A silence fell over the room. As if the characters were going to do just that.
"And super awesome," Yang countered.
Blake was on Yang's side. "It does seem efficient."
Weiss didn't want to give up though. "Well, we should put it to a vote."
"I think we just did," Ruby said. Two dings were sounded as Blake gave a thumbs up and Yang makes a double-rocker gesture. A buzz was heard as Weiss angrily places her fists at her side. The four rush two the beds. None of the action is shown but the audience can hear what sounds like hammering, drilling, sawing and possibly even a jackhammer in the background.
"What?" Molly asked.
"How?" Ron wondered.
"It's just for comedy," Hermione explained. "Like how we heard that cat when Yang and Ruby got into that fight. There was no actual cat, the animators just placed it in there to make us laugh."
"I fail to see the humor," Moody grumbled.
Team RWBY returned to the front of the room. "Objective complete," Ruby said as they observed the new layout of their room. Weiss' was the same while Ruby's hung above, being held by ropes and a blanket hung over the bed as a sort of tent. Blake's bed is next to the bookshelf. Several of those books are used to raise Yang's bed.
"Yeah that's-" George said.
"Completely safe," Fred said.
"You're using books to lift the beds?" Hermione screeched. "What if you need them?"
"If Blake was willing to sacrifice them to raise Yang's bed, then she probably won't need them," Harry figured.
"Still, it looks like it could easily collapse," Molly said worryingly.
Ruby then spoke again. "Alright! Our second order of business is... classes," she trailed off in a disappointed voice. A book was open in her lap.
Everyone chuckled while Hermione gave a fond roll of her eyes.
"Now we have a few classes together," Ruby told everyone. "At 9 we got to be-" she was cut off by Weiss.
"What?! Did you say 9 o' clock?" Ruby struggled to answer so Weiss explained "It's 8:55, you dance!"
"No need to be rude," Harry said.
"Harry's right," Hermione said. "If she was so concerned about getting to class on time, she should have seen the schedule herself and let her teammates know earlier."
Weiss rushes out of the room. The rest of team RWBY along with team JNPR, who were staying in the dorm across from them, poked their heads out of the door. Ruby stammers a bit before following her teammate declaring "To class!"
"Class?" Jaune wonders before he loses his balance and falls on his teammates. He quickly picks himself up and rushes after team RWBY. "We're going to be late." His team is right behind him.
"Why are Jaune and his team running late?" Tonks wondered.
"Not sure but I guess it's a good thing they noticed Team RWBY then," Remus said.
In the courtyard, Ozpin and Glynda watch the two teams rush to their class. Glynda looks at her watch as Ozpin takes a sip of his drink. In the classroom, Professor Port begins his lesson. "Monsters! Deeeemons... Prowlers of the night. Yes, the Creatures of Grimm have many names, but I merely refer to them as prey! Ha-ha!"
Ron leaned over to Harry. "Is he serious right now?"
Harry gave a sigh. "Apparently so."
Team RWBY are seen sitting in the front row. Yang and Blake are paying attention. Weiss is taking notes. Ruby looks like he's about to fall asleep but is woken up by Port's bad joke.
"She shouldn't fall asleep so soon," Hermione scolded. "Even if the teacher isn't up to snuff."
There was no response to the professor's joke. "Uhhhh... And you shall too, upon graduation from this prestigious academy! Now as I was saying: Vale, as well as the other three kingdoms, are safe havens in an otherwise treacherous world! Our planet is absolutely teeming with creatures that would love nothing more than to tear you to pieces! And that's where we come in. Huntsmen. Huntress." He gives a wink at Yang who groans in response.
"Could they seriously not find anyone better for this job?" Reamus complained.
"Apparently not," Moody grumbled.
"Individuals who have sworn to protect those who cannot protect themselves! From what, you ask? Why, the very world." A student cheers in excitement but when nobody followed suit he quietly sits back down.
"Props for trying," Fred and George said.
"That is what you are training to become. But first: A story. A tale of a young, handsome man... Me! When I was a boy..." the rest of his sentence is trailed off into bla bla blas as Weiss noticing Ruby doodling something on her paper. She holds it up to show a poor drawing of Professor Port with stink lines coming out of him. 'Professor Poop' is written on the bottom and she blows out a small raspberry. Blake and Yang snicker but Weiss looks furious.
"She should be careful lest she gets caught," Ginny smirked.
"Her art skills could also use some work," George said. Hermione wanted to feel the same as Weiss but considering this guy keeps talking about himself, she couldn't bring herself to blame Ruby. She already made that mistake with Lockheart. And this guy was nowhere near as charming.
Professor Port cleared his throat, getting the team's attention again. "In the end the Beowulf was no match for my sheer tenacity, and I returned to my village with the beast in captivity and my head held high. Celebrated as a hero!" He gives a bow before continuing. "The moral of this story? A true huntsman must be honorable!" Cut to Ruby balancing an apple on a book held only by her pencil while making a silly face.
Everyone chuckled at that. "A sense of humor would not be a bad thing either," Dumbledore said.
"A true huntsmen must be dependable!" Ruby fell asleep again.
"She does need some work on that one," Moody grumbled.
"She is still just a kid," Kingsley reminded him.
"Plus, this is the beginning of her story," Reamus said. "We will see her develop into the leader she is meant to be as the series goes on."
"A true huntsman must be strategic, well-educated and wise!" Ruby is not so subtly picking her nose. Weiss' anger was starting to build.
"She's not acting any better than Ruby is," Harry complained.
"Don't worry Prongslet. She'll get her reality check soon enough," Sirius assured.
"So, who among you believes themselves to be the embodiment of these traits?" Port asks.
Weiss raises her hand. "I do sir," she answered.
"Considering these are all first years I highly doubt it," Arthur said.
"Well then, let's find out! Step forward and face your opponent!" Port says gesturing to a cage with a Grimm inside.
"How did he bring that in?" Molly demanded.
"There's a question, but no answer," Roku said.
"You're of no help," Hermione said.
Weiss has changed into her regular attire, her sword at the ready. "Gooo Weiss!" Yang cheered pumping her fist into the air.
"Fight well!" Blake followed, waving a flag with their team's name on it.
"Already merchandising," Fred noted.
"She works quickly," George said.
"Yeah, represent Teeeeam RWBY!" Ruby shouted.
"Ruby! I'm trying to focus!" Weiss scolded her team leader. Ruby ducks down and apologizes.
"They were all cheering. Why is she singing Ruby out?" Ginny asked.
"It does seem weird," Molly said. "I thought she and Ruby were making progress."
"That was before Ruby was made leader," Dumbledore said.
"It makes sense," Sirius said. "She's had everything she ever wanted before. But now she isn't on the same team as Pyrrha, one of her teammates is two years younger than her and that same teammate has been made leader instead of her. Like I said earlier, she's starting to see the real world doesn't work the same but she's resisting because she's not use to it."
"Hopefully someone will set her on the right track," Arthur said.
"Allllright! Let the match... begin! Port pulled out the weapon that was on the wall earlier (Roku called it Blowhard) and used the axe part of the weapon to open the cage. A boar like Grimm (Boarbatusk) charges at Weiss. She uses Myrtenaster to deflect and roll to the side. The Boarbatusk stands at a distance, studying Weiss. "Ha-ha! Wasn't expecting that were you?" Port asks.
"Hang in there Weiss!" Ruby cheered. Weiss speeds towards the oncoming Boarbatusk, sticking her blade straight out for it's skull. They clash and Weiss' rapier is caught in between the Grimm's tusks. Weiss starts to struggle to free her weapon.
"That didn't seem like a smart move," Harry said.
"It wasn't," Moody grumbled. "She should be aiming for it's underside."
"That's right!" Tonks shouted. "There's no armor there. It's a weak spot."
"Bold, new approach," Port noted. "I like it."
"No Weiss is just being stupid," Kingsley said.
"Come on, Weiss, show it who's boss!" Ruby tried to encourage him. Weiss looked at her team leader frustrated. But the Boarbatusk was able to knock Weiss back and rip her sword away from her.
"Oh-ho! Now what will you do without your weapon?" Port wondered.
"This teacher isn't helping," Hermione groaned.
"Weiss also is letting herself get distracted easily," Harry noted. "First by Ruby and now by her teacher."
"She needs to focus if she wants to win this fight," Sirius said.
Weiss looks up to see the Boarbatusk roll straight towards her. She dodges just in time and runs to her weapon, successfully recovering it. "Weiss! Go for its belly!" Ruby suggested. "There's no armor underneath-"
"Stop telling me what to do!" Weiss demanded. Ruby fell silent.
"One: She's your leader. She's supposed to tell you what to do," Fred said.
"Two: She's giving you useful advice. You shouldn't dismiss it," George continued.
Meanwhile, the Boarbatusk begins to spin on the ground in order to gain speed before launching itself at Weiss. Weiss is able to conjure one of her glyphs to act as a shield causing the Boarbatusk to land flat on its back. Weiss jumps onto another one behind her and uses it to shoot her to the Grimm, driving her blade into its stomach. Effectively killing the beast. "Bravo!" Port cheered. "Bra-vo! It appears we are indeed in the presence of a true huntress-in-training! I'm afraid that's all the time we have for today. Be sure to cover the assign readings, and... stay vigilant. Class dismissed."
Weiss walks off, not looking at her teammates. "Sheesh, what's with her?" Jaune wondered. The rest of Team RWBY looked at each other with that same question on their face.
Ruby follows her into the hallway calling out to her. "What?" Weiss demanded.
"What's wrong with you?" Ruby asks. "Why are you being-"
Weiss cuts her off. "What's wrong with me? What's wrong with you? You're supposed to be a leader, and all you've been so far is a nuisance."
"She's barley been leader for a day," Ginny retorted.
Ruby scoffs. "What did I do?"
"That's just it - you've done nothing to earn your position!" Weiss answers.
"She was the one who came up with the plan to take down the Nevermore and kept the group together until you and team JNPR split up!" Ron retorted.
"Back in the forest, you acted like a child, and you only continue to do so," Weiss continued.
"One: she is two years younger than you. Two: You're not acting any better," Reamus said.
"Weiss where is this all coming from?" Ruby asked. "What happened to all the talk about 'working together'? I thought you believed in acting like a team."
Weiss responded by saying "Not a team lead by you. I've studied and trained. And quite frankly, I deserve better." She turns around and Ruby tries to reach out to her but drops it at Weiss' final sentence. "Ozpin made a mistake."
At this point no one had any more words to say. It was clear that Weiss needed to humble herself and straighten her attitude out. No doubt that what her character arc is going to be about.
Weiss walks away and Ruby turns around to find Ozpin standing right behind her.
"How did Weiss not see him?" the twins asked.
"He likely was standing around a corner and only appeared once Weiss started to leave," Dumbledore said.
Ozpin hummed for a second before saying "Now that didn't seem to go very well."
"Is she right? Did you make a mistake?" Ruby asks him.
Ozpin chuckles. "That remains to be seen.
Weiss is still stomping around the halls when she finds Professor Port outside on one of the balconies watching the sun set. She calls out to him and he warmly greets her asking what brings her here. "Um, I enjoyed you lecture," she started as a way to break the ice.
"Of course you did, child; you have the blood of a true Huntress in you," Port said. He notices the long look on Weiss' face. "Something's troubling you," he figured. She admits yes and he pleads with her to 'confess to him her strife'.
"Well... I-I think I should have been the leader of Team RWBY!" Weiss finally admits.
"Team WRBY?" Ginny tries out.
"Does not have the same ring to it," Tonks said.
"Team WBRY" Fred tried.
"Still no," George said.
"Ruby's stuck as team leader then," Harry says. "The name won't work otherwise."
After a small pause Port says "That's preposterous!"
Everyone snorted at that. Looks like Weiss' humble pie is coming sooner than they thought.
Cut back to Ruby who asks Ozpin what he means. "I mean it's only been one day," he stated. "Ruby... I've made more mistakes than any man, woman, and child on this planet. But at this moment, I would not consider your appointment to leader to be one of them." He leans down so he can be at more eye level with Ruby. "Do you?"
Dumbledore quirked an eyebrow at what Ozpin just said. More mistakes than any man, woman and child? Surely that was an exaggeration.
No one could have made more mistakes than him.
Back with Weiss and Port, Weiss cries out "Excuse me?"
"I've believed in Professor Ozpin for many years. And the man has never once led me astray," Port said.
"So, you would just blindly accept his decision even after seeing how exceptional I am?" Weiss asks.
"If he had any doubts, he would have talked to Ozpin about it and Ozpin would explain his reasoning better or realize Port has a point and go with what he said," Moody said. He and Dumbledore had this type of conversation many times.
"With all due respect, your exceptional skill on the battlefield is only matched by your poor attitude," Port pointed out.
"How dare you!" Weiss shouted, seething.
"My point exactly," Port said.
Everyone snickered. "Not afraid to call it like it is," Sirius cheered.
"Maybe we misjudged him," Reamus said.
Port continues. "I see a girl before me spending her entire life getting exactly what she wants."
Weiss crosses her arms and denies it. Port gazes at her and Weiss reluctantly admits "Well... not entirely true."
Over with Ozpin and Ruby, Ozpin continues to give some encouragement. "Being a team leader isn't just a title you carry into battle, but a badge you wear constantly. If you're not always performing at your absolute best. Then what reason do you give others to follow you." Ruby ponders his words.
Kingsley bowed his head slightly. "Sadly, he's not wrong."
Port starts to give a motivational speech of his own. "So, the outcome did not fall in your favor. Do you really believe that acting in such a manner would cause those in power to revoke their decision?" Weiss starts to calm down and looks back up at him. "So instead of fretting about what you don't have, savor what you do. Hone your skills, perfect every technique, and be not the best leader, but the best person you can be."
"That was well spoken," Arthur said.
"He really does know what he's talking about," Sirius agreed.
"Now if he can just apply that to his classes," Moody said. "Otherwise, his students might get themselves killed."
Ozpin starts to leave but gives Ruby one last piece of advice. "You've been burdened with a daunting responsibility, Ruby. I'd advise you to take some time, to think about how you'll uphold it." He leaves and Ruby walks off in another direction. Along the way she sees Weiss talking to Port and smiles to herself.
Late at night Team RWBY is sleeping in their beds. Weiss pulls open the tent over Ruby's and, to her surprise, finds the younger classmate sleeping over textbooks and notes.
Every current Gryffindor gives a pointed look at Hermione who simply huffs and turns away.
Weiss gently prods Ruby awake. "Weiss! I was studying and then I fell asleep, I'm sorry." Weiss motions for Ruby to keep it down before she notices an empty coffee mug next to Ruby.
"How do you take your coffee?" Weiss asks. Ruby is confused but when Weiss presses, she responds with cream and five sugars.
"That's not coffee that's an energy drink," Tonks says.
"She should not be consuming that much sugar!" Molly cries out.
"What is even the point of coffee then?" Ginny wonders.
Weiss leaves and almost too quickly gives Ruby a fresh cup of coffee. Ruby thanks her and Weiss says "Ruby, I think you have what it takes to be a good leader. Just know, that I'm going to be the best teammate you'll ever have." They share a smile, and Weiss wishes her team leader luck in studying before pointing out an inconsistency in her notes. Before Weiss leaves the room, she admits something to Ruby. "I've always wanted bunk beds as a kid." She leaves and Ruby returns to her notes.
"And this episode is done," Roku announced.
"Next episode or another World of Remnant first?" Dumbledore asks.
"World of Remnant," Roku said. "Time for you guys to learn a little more about the kingdoms."
Ron groans. "That's going to take forever."
"I'm not giving details about every one of them," Roku corrected.
"Plus, didn't you hear Port in the episode?" Hermione asks him.
"Not really," Ron admits.
"There's only four kingdoms so it won't take long," Ginny said.
World of Remnant
Kingdoms
"The world of Remnant is a dangerous place, particularly for man," the Mystery Woman states. The screen shows the planet with the broken moon orbiting nearby.
"Oh great. Her again," Tonks said.
"She creeps me out," Hermione admits.
Wait till you actually see her face. Roku thinks to herself.
"In the countless years that humanity has roamed the planet, civilizations have grown and fallen." The map of Remnant is shown. "But four have withstood the test of time." A light shines on the map as each kingdom is listed off. "Atlas, Mistral, Vacuo, Vale. These four kingdoms, with the help of natural barriers and human tenacity, have proven that they have the will to survive." The map is replaced by a set of buildings with mountains on one side. As time passes, more buildings arise.
"So much like what Roku said earlier," Kingsley noted. He also noted that that Menagerie place wasn't mentioned. Though Roku did say that that place wasn't counted for some reason.
"Each kingdom has a governing council to represent the people and their needs." Silhouettes of people appear on a podium.
"And I suppose there is a separate video explaining the politics," Dumbledore inquired.
"Actually, they don't really delve into how their politics work," Roku explained. Sure, there was the stuff in volume 7 with the voting and Jacques dinner party but all that explained was that two of the council seats belonged to a general and the headmaster of the huntsmen academy. Roku never remembered learning what the other two councilman's roles were. Nor Jacques once he got a seat. Not that Roku ever cared about politics to begin with. Drama involving all of that is scarier than the drama religion can cause if you ask her.
Dumbledore shrugged but was slightly upset that he couldn't learn a thing or two from them. If only to learn how to deal with Fudge better.
"Next, comes the military. While most kingdoms only call on its citizens to serve when needed, others find it more important to be... prepared." An aircraft flies across the sky and rows of soldier's march across the screen.
"Isn't having a military important?" Hermione asked.
"Depends on the government system," Kingsley said. "Most countries have muggle armies given what goes on in the world, but we feel we don't need that. Aurors like us step up to the task whenever something monumental happens."
"Like with what's going on with You-Know-Who?" Ron asked. Kingsley nodded.
"There are those who choose to venture outside the walls of the kingdom." Travelers wander across the planes. "Roaming nomads and small villages are not uncommon." The travelers start constructing buildings. "Yet neither is tendency to... disappear overnight." In one fell swoop, the travelers and the buildings vanish."
Everyone shivered at that. "Must be difficult to live outside the kingdoms with the Grimm on the loose," Harry said.
"Lastly, the huntsman academies. These institutions' soul purpose is to train the next generation of huntsmen." Hunters in training are sparring with one another. "The next generation of defenders that will live and die to protect the lifestyle that they are so accustomed to." Grimm appear and the huntsmen get ready for a fight.
"That's what we're all trying to do," Tonks said. Voldemort wanted to change their way of life for the worse. They had to make sure that didn't happen.
"Yes, the world of Remnant is a dangerous place. But the four kingdoms stand as beacons of hope." The map appears again. With the four kingdoms shining against a sea of black. "As safe havens from the darkness that surrounds them. They are the key to mankind's survival, as long as they stand united..." The lights are extinguished. And darkness consumes the map.
"She's a pleasant woman," Sirius remarked sarcastically. He then clapped his hands and rubbed them together. "So, next episode?"
"Next episode," Roku confirmed.
