Chapter 56 – Settling Sky, Reunion and Revelation
At the Dragon's Den, shortly after breakfast, Natsu and Juvia were quickly cuddled up together on the couch in the living room. Natsu was lying on his back, bare-chested as normal, while Juvia was in a thin blue tank top that left her midriff exposed and a pair of grey cotton short shorts. The warmth of Natsu's Dragon Magic that enveloped Juvia made the Water Mage sigh in contentment as she kissed Natsu's lips. The pair wouldn't move for a few hours as the Dragon Soul Ritual continued.
"I'm heading to the Guild!" Wendy called out with a smile to her housemates. Her cheeks pink from having seen Juvia and Natsu getting all cuddled up together.
"We'll be right behind you, Wendy!" Lisanna waved to Wendy with a cute smile of her own. They were just finishing up the dishes right now anyway, so it wouldn't take too long.
Wendy was out of the house and traipsing through the forest along the well-worn path with Carla at her side only a moment later. "This is a great Guild, right, Carla?"
"I fail to see the attraction." Carla denied with a shake of her head.
"Hah…" Wendy sighed a bit at Carla's attitude.
Carla looked up at Wendy briefly. "I am glad to know that they have a female dorm. Once you save up some money we can move there instead of staying in that pervert's home."
Wendy looked down at Carla with a slight glare. "Natsu isn't a pervert, Carla. He has multiple Mates, but that's a beautiful showing of all of the love he has to give." As a Dragon Slayer, Wendy understood the truth of what it meant to have a Mate and just how deep that bond was between both Dragons and Dragon Slayers.
"If you say so, Wendy." Carla looked forward again, not wanting to start an argument.
-Fairy Tail Guild ~ Later-
Lucy smiled as she entered the Guild Hall with her 'dragon sisters' and saw the normal rambunctiousness of the various members. She headed over to the area along the wall where members could hang up their coats, cloaks, or jackets and greeted Wendy who was sitting at the table closest to the wall. "Hey, we caught up." She shrugged her jacket off her shoulders, revealing her black t-shirt that hugged her figure. "It's been a few days, are you getting used to the Guild?"
"Yeah." Wendy smiled at Lucy. "It's not too different from Cait Shelter when it comes to taking Quests." She held up a Quest paper for an E-Rank Quest around Magnolia. "I'm working hard to get promoted so that I can take care of myself."
"I was the same way." Lucy giggled as she hung up her coat. "Don't wear yourself out though. You're welcome to stay with us as long as you like."
Wendy noticed that a large number of coats and jackets had been hung up today. "It's getting colder, huh?"
Cana stopped by Wendy's table and gave the slightly younger woman a quick side-hug. "It's always like this around Magnolia when autumn sets in." She explained with a little smile, showing off the barest hint of one of her fangs.

"A bell?" Wendy was confused why a large bell was ringing throughout the town.
"He's been gone a while this time." Gray said with a grin as the excitement within the Guild Hall picked up noticeably.
"Yeah!" Elfman cheered with his fist raised in front of him.
Mira stopped helping the waitresses with delivering food and drinks close to where Wendy, Cana, and Lucy were. "Looks like Gildarts is back." She had a grin on her face that was equal parts happy and challenging. The She-Devil wouldn't mind another spar with Gildarts.
"Gildarts?" Wendy asked as she looked at all the activity and excitement of the other members.
"My old man." Cana said with a shrug, though the amused smile on her face made it clear that she enjoyed the idea of her dad coming back to the Guild after being away for a while.
Lucy looked at Wendy with a smile. "Gildarts is the strongest Mage in Fairy Tail."
Wendy's eyes widened. "Really? Even stronger than Master? Or Natsu?"
"That's right." Erza, sitting down at the same table as Wendy with a plate carrying a large slice of strawberry cheesecake on it, said with a little grin. "No one in the Guild has ever managed to defeat him in a one-on-one match."
"Was he gone for a really long time?" Wendy asked Cana, since Gildarts was her father.
Cana waved her hand. "A bit longer than any of his average trips due to his wanderlust. He was checking out something about a specific Quest."
Wendy cocked her head to the side cutely. "A specific Quest?"
"Yeah, it was a Quest that Master felt only Gildarts could check out safely." Mira explained with a little huff. "You know about S-Rank Quests, right Wendy?" Wendy nodded. "Well, above those are the SS-Rank Quests, and beyond them are the Decade Quests, the Quests that haven't been completed in over a decade since their first posting. But there's one level higher than that…the Century Quest. There's only a single one of them and it's a Quest that's been on the board of most Guilds practically from day one, and even now, a century later, no one has ever completed it. That's the Quest that Gildarts went to look into at Master's request."
"Why does the bell need to ring so much?" Carla was holding her ears from the constant noise.
Lisanna, with a tray balanced on one hand, smiled brightly and pointed towards the front doors. "Why don't you take a peek outside and see?"
Wendy hopped up from her seat and rushed towards the front doors. Carla quickly followed after Wendy and both of them stopped as they got to the main gate of Fairy Tail.
"It's Gildarts!" One Magnolia resident yelled out loudly as the people were quickly rushing around the streets.
"Gildarts has come back!" Another man hollered out as he waved people to one side of the street.
A flying horn above the city blared out a message on repeat. "Magnolia will now undergo the Gildarts Shift! Will all citizens please take your assigned positions!"
The rumble of the city began once everyone was inside. Buildings shifted to either the left or right, the sound of gears turning could be heard as the main street of Magnolia was surrounded by raised walls upon which the buildings sat, out of reach of Gildarts. In only a moment, the entire town from the entryway to Fairy Tail was a single, straight street with arrows pointing the way to the Guild Hall.
"The entire city split in two?!" Wendy cried out in shock at seeing the Gildarts Shift for the first time.
"My old man's Crash Magic turns anything it hits into dust and rubble. He also has a habit of walking without paying attention to where he's going." Cana explained to Wendy and Carla. "Just brushing past a building on his way to the Guild could result in said building collapsing…so Magnolia just made the Gildarts Shift to prevent any accidental destruction."
Wendy looked between the shifted Magnolia and Cana twice, just out of pure shock. "Mr. Gildarts must be amazing, right, Carla?"
"Yes. Amazingly stupid." Carla replied with a flat look at the shifted town.
Gildarts walked down the straight street towards the Guild. As he got to the entrance, he let out a large yawn. "Ah, I'm back everyone!" He greeted all of Fairy Tail with a smile and a wave.
"This is Mr. Gildarts?" Wendy sniffed and picked up on multiple things about the strongest Mage in Fairy Tail. A bit of alcohol on his breath, a scent that was vaguely reminiscent of Cana's, the faint smell of blood, and the overwhelming amount of Magic Power that filtered through Gildarts's scent as just a trace of his power exuded from his body.
"I see a new face." Gildarts was looking right back at Wendy with a friendly grin. "Welcome to the Guild."
Wendy gave a short bow to Gildarts. "Thank you, Mr. Gildarts, I'm Wendy Marvell."
Gildarts chuckled and waved off the 'Mr.' part as he spotted Cana. "My little girl!" He was at Cana's side and pulling her into a hug a split-second later.
"Dad!" Cana grumbled, even as she returned the hug. "Do you have to do this every time?"
"Yes." Gildarts said with a big smile for his daughter.
Cana playfully shoved her goof of a dad away.
"Gildarts." Makarov spoke up from where he was seated on top of the bar.
"Ah, Master." Gildarts greeted as he walked over.
Makarov nodded back and looked into Gildarts's eyes. "How was the Quest?"
Gildarts rubbed the back of his head. "Ahahaha…" He stopped chuckling to answer properly. "It's legitimate. But I couldn't manage it."
"What?!"
"Seriously?!"
"Even Gildarts can fail a Quest?"
The shock and disbelief from the rest of Fairy Tail was loud.
Makarov let out a sigh. "Is that right? You couldn't do it either…"
Gildarts bowed his head slightly, still grinning. "Sorry. I sullied our name a bit, huh?"
"I'm just glad that you made it back." Makarov waved off the fact that Gildarts had immediately pulled out of the Century Quest when it became apparent that he couldn't handle it. "As far as I'm aware, you're the first person to come back from that Quest alive."
Ur spoke up from her seat at the bar a few seats down from Makarov. "Just what does this Century Quest entail, exactly?"
"Oh?" Gildarts perked up at Ur's interest. "Sorry, but to even learn about the specifics, you have to sign a binding contract. Can't speak of the Quest parameters because of it. The request maker is very secretive about the Quest as a whole. That's why Master had me go check it out."
Ur cocked an eyebrow at that. "Yeah, that's not suspicious at all."
"Anyway…" Gildarts yawned. "I'm beat. I'm gonna head home."
Cana put her hand on Gildarts's shoulder. "I'll guide you, dad. You'll break no telling how many walls if I don't."
Gildarts brightened up and smiled at Cana. "Thank you, Cana~"
"Yeah, yeah…" Cana lightly pushed him towards the front doors. As they were walking, she whispered under her breath. "I can smell the blood on you. Tell me what you can on the way to Porlyusica's." The tone she whispered with made it clear that Gildarts didn't have a choice in the matter and they were going to the old healer's place whether Gildarts wanted to or not.
"Ah, yeah, tell Natsu to come see me when he has some time! I brought something back for him!" Gildarts called out to the other Dragon Slayers and the Guild at large right before he and Cana exited out the front doors.
As the excitement in the Guild began to return to normal levels, Wendy picked up the E-Ranked Quest that she'd chosen and waved to the others. "I'm going to get this job done!"
"Have fun, Wendy!" Almost half the Guild called back to their newest member. Wendy could only beam at them all happily before she and Carla headed out into the, now normal again, Magnolia.
-Later-
Wendy smiled at the signed Quest paper as she started making her way back towards the Guild Hall. "That took a little while, but it was fun."
"The kids were a little too rowdy to be learning Magic." Carla shook her head as she recalled the class that Wendy had taught some of the basics of Magic to for the last few hours.
A slight shift in the air and Wendy went still. Her slitted eyes narrowed on one part of the empty street as she began to focus her Magic. "Come out."
The air wavered as what appeared to be a cloud of prismatic fog drifted away on an unfelt breeze, revealing Mystogan. "Wendy…"
"Your voice…" Wendy's eyes widened; she'd never forget that voice as long as she lived.
"I never thought you'd come to this Guild." Mystogan continued as he pulled his hat off his head and the bandana from around his face. With the coverings removed, blue hair blew in the slight breeze and a red tattoo was seen on the right side of Mystogan's face.
"Jellal?!" Wendy cried out in shock, once more seeing the kind person that had helped her shortly after she'd 'left the nest' and arrived in a new land far from her mother for the first time.
Carla's eyes widened, having heard stories about this man from Wendy over their years together.
"I'm Mystogan of Fairy Tail now." Mystogan said as he shook his head minutely at the name Jellal. "The Jellal that Fairy Tail knew was someone else, and not a good person."
"Someone else called Jellal?" Wendy blinked in confusion at Mystogan's words.
"When we met, I didn't know very much about this world." Mystogan said, making Carla's eyes widen. "So I used the name 'Jellal' with you."
Carla was trembling slightly now. 'This world?!'
Wendy took a step closer to Mystogan as tears appeared at the corners of her eyes. "But you're…you are the Jellal that I met back then, aren't you?" She wiped away a tear that rolled down her cheek. "I…I always wanted to meet you again…all this time."
"I'm sorry that I wasn't able to go back for you." Mystogan apologized to Wendy as he looked sadly at the Sky Dragon Slayer.
Just as Wendy was about to get within arm's reach of Mystogan, Carla's white Aera Magic wings appeared and she grabbed Wendy from behind, flying her backwards away from the Mage. "Carla?!" Wendy cried out in surprise.
"Just who are you?!" Carla demanded, her fur standing on end as she nearly hissed at Mystogan. "How do you know about other worlds?!"
Mystogan sighed morosely. "Because we're from the same world, young Exceed." He looked straight at Carla and spoke the name of their shared home world. "Edolas."
Carla nearly dropped to the ground, but she still put herself between Wendy and Mystogan. "St-Stay back… I'll protect Wendy!"
"That's not necessary anymore." Mystogan assured Carla as he motioned to the side towards a bench that was against the wall of a building.
Wendy moved without hesitation, scooping Carla up into her arms and holding her securely, despite Carla's wariness against Mystogan. Once the two Mages sat down on opposite ends of the wooden bench, Mystogan continued to speak.
"When we met, I was freshly arrived here from Edolas…after making a choice that I still don't regret to this day." Mystogan began as he looked between Wendy and Carla. "Knowing of my father's, the King's, plans…I took steps to stop the Anima Project. With some help from my brother, Siegrain, we managed to send all of the remaining Magic, and the only creatures with their own innate Magic, the Exceeds, here to Earthland. However, for it to work, someone with control of the system had to activate it and be sent along with all the Magic. That was my choice and I made it."
"I…I'm sorry, but I don't understand." Wendy shook her head at the unfamiliar terms.
Carla was just staring at Mystogan. "Y-You sent…all of the Exceeds here…to Earthland?" That wasn't supposed to happen. 'What about the plan? I remember the important parts... But if they're all here now. Did he change everything with his actions?'
Mystogan explained the concept of Edolas to Wendy, and the ever-growing hunger for more and more Magic that his father, the King, had fallen into over the years. Eventually resulting in what could only be called a quiet madness that most never picked up on. Once Wendy was aware of the overall plans that the Edolas King had made with his Anima Project, she was able to figure out the sacrifice that the man she knew as Jellal had made.
"You can never go back." Wendy felt an ache in her heart for Mystogan at being cut off from his homeland forever.
"It's better this way." Mystogan said with only a hint of sadness for his loss of his previous home and his one remaining family member that he truly cared for, his twin brother. "Siegrain was always a tinkerer, always making various devices that worked without Magic at all. He was the right choice to become the next King when all of the Magic Power was sent here to Earthland." He sighed a little and briefly checked that no one was approaching the area. It wouldn't do for anyone to see his face and get the wrong idea. "It was quite a while after I left you with Cait Shelter that I discovered how this world mirrored Edolas. Where I was a fairly kind person by nature, this world's Jellal was a monster only concerned with his own goals and power. The 'Siegrain' of this world was no more than a Thought Projection of Jellal that he claimed was his twin brother, while my twin brother Siegrain was very much a real person. That was when I hid my identity away and became Mystogan."
Carla looked at Mystogan with suspicion. "You said that you sent all of the Magic, the Exceeds, and even yourself here to Earthland. If that's the case, why haven't any of the Exceed come looking for their lost eggs?" She had to know why her people…her mother…who had practically sacrificed their own children…hadn't searched for them if they were in Earthland now.
"I'm not sure." Mystogan shook his head. "There's a chance they simply don't trust the humans of this world and have hidden themselves away. I only have a vague notion of where Extalia itself may have ended up, if it didn't get converted into pure Ethernano during the reverse Anima." Mystogan bowed his head to Carla. "I'm sorry to say, but the only Exceeds that I know the location of for sure…are you and Happy."
Wendy hugged Carla suddenly. "It's okay, Carla." She said softly to her friend. "We can look for them, if you want to." She gently ran her fingers over Carla's white fur atop the cat's head.
"It-It's fine…" Carla said through a strangled breath as she felt tears in her eyes. "If they…if they didn't care to search for us, then I won't worry about searching for them either."
"Okay." Wendy held Carla close, offering all of the care and support she could to her friend as possible. "If you ever want to look, I'll help." She promised with a soft whisper.
Mystogan barely heard the muffled 'thank you' from Carla, even though he was only sitting about a meter away from Wendy.
-Gildarts's House ~ Late Afternoon-
"Yo, Gildarts!" Natsu nearly burst through the front door. "I heard you wanted to see me!"
Gildarts looked at Natsu with a flat stare. "At least you didn't break the door this time." He motioned to the chair across from the one he was sitting in.
Natsu closed the door behind him and sat down. "Cana said you met a Dragon?" His tone was serious and lacked the normal energy and warmth it usually held.
"Yeah…while traveling to check out the legitimacy of the Century Quest." Gildarts confirmed with a nod. "It wasn't a red dragon, like you described Igneel. This dragon was black with blue markings."
"Where did you…" Natsu questioned, only to be cut off.
"Zonia, the Haunted Peak." Gildarts answered the half-asked question. "That dragon wasn't even related to the Quest, but it still interfered."
Natsu's slitted eyes focused on Gildarts's chest. "Is that why you smell faintly of blood and potions?"
Gildarts moved his black cloak aside to show his bandaged torso, his bandaged left arm and leg, and multiple stitched up cuts on his upper chest. "That thing didn't say a word to me, barely even acknowledged me, before doing this to me in an instant." Honestly, if not for the dragon's disinterest in him, the damage probably would've been much worse. "That black dragon isn't anything like the Igneel that you've told me about. It's an enemy of humanity."
Natsu stood up abruptly from his seat and took a step towards the door.
"Stop." Gildarts said firmly. "It's not there anymore. It seemed preoccupied and was flying around the continent…no, probably the whole world."
"It could've left behind a clue…" Natsu looked at Gildarts. "This is the first credible dragon sighting I've heard about since I left the nest."
Gildarts covered himself with his black cloak again. "Natsu, no man is going to take down that black dragon."
Natsu's face was stone cold, but his amber eyes were like molten magma. "So, the one that needs to find it is a Dragon Slayer then." He clenched his fists tightly at his sides. "What's a single violent dragon against my magic?"
"If that's how you really feel, then I won't stop you." Gildarts said with a firm look into Natsu's eyes. "But you have more important things to you nowadays, right?" He reminded Natsu of his family at home, and of the Fairy Tail Guild. "Don't think you have to rush after any hint of a dragon that you hear about, Natsu. You especially don't have to do it alone, right?"
"You're right…" Natsu let out a long exhale filled with smoke. "Nearly lost my head for a second." He did have more important things to him aside from chasing rumors of dragons. Images of his Mates filled his mind and a smile crossed his face. "If the day comes that the black dragon needs to be slayed, then I won't try and do it alone."
Gildarts chuckled and gave Natsu a smirk. "Smart man. Don't get so lost in work that you lose what's most precious to you…like I did." He reached over to the side table next to his chair and uncorked the bottle sitting on it. "Want some? It's Ember Bourbon, so I'm sure you'll like it."
Natsu chuckled and sat back down in the chair across from Gildarts. "Just one drink. If I'm not home for dinner, and sober, I'm going to have a bad night."
Gildarts cracked up at that and poured Natsu a drink of the Ember Bourbon as they began to chat and catch Gildarts up on what had happened around the Guild while he'd been gone.
-Dragon's Den ~ Night-
"Did Wendy seem a little…off, tonight?" Mira asked as the girls were bathing in the hot spring together.
"You noticed it too?" Lisanna looked at her sister with a small frown. "I wonder what happened?"
Cana stretched her arms over her head and then rested them on the edge of the large pool. "Carla was quieter than normal too. She didn't even snub Happy when he offered her a fish."
"Juvia hopes that there's nothing wrong." Juvia was clearly concerned for the youngest woman in the Dragon's Den, even if she was only a few months younger than Lisanna.
Erza looked towards the door that led to the rest of the house. "I'm sure Wendy and Carla will tell us when they're ready. Until then, we'll just let them know that we're ready to listen when that time comes."
"I hope they don't keep it to themselves for too long." Lucy worried that whatever was bugging Wendy and Carla might be something they didn't want to talk about and would end up hurting the two emotionally with no outlet.
The women would finish their soak and head up to the Master Bedroom a short time later to cuddle with Natsu and each other as they always did.
-Wendy's Room-
Wendy lay in bed in her pajamas, holding Carla close. The two hadn't spoken a word of what Mystogan had told them to anyone. Truthfully, both of them were still processing what they'd learned.
'It seems like Carla wants to know what happened to the other Exceeds…but she's still hurt by what they did to her and the other eggs they sent to Earthland.' Wendy thought to herself as she held Carla and gently ran her fingers over the white cat's fur.
Carla was only just now beginning to doze off as her mind finally began to calm down from the revelations of the day. 'One day… In the future… Maybe then we'll go searching for the others. I do want to know why… Why didn't they try to find us?' It was an emotional pain to feel so unwanted that you'd be sent to another world for some mission, only for the mission to be made meaningless, and yet your own family wouldn't try to search for you. Rejection like that left a mark that would linger for a long time before any healing could be done.
As Carla and Wendy drifted off to sleep, they both cuddled closer together, each seeking the warmth and comfort of their oldest friend.
-Next Morning-
"Mmm…" Juvia hummed lowly in pleasure as she lay atop Natsu on the couch. The Dragon Soul Ritual was going well and the two were once more left alone in the house together as everyone else had gone to the Guild for the day.
Natsu smiled at hearing Juvia's adorable little hum. "It won't be too much longer now." He whispered to Juvia as they'd been making good progress with the ritual.
Juvia snuggled into Natsu's chest with a happy smile. "Juvia is glad, even if she will miss this time a bit."
"We'll have our whole lives to love each other, Juvia." Natsu promised her as the ritual came to an end for the day.
"Natsu-sama~" Juvia couldn't stop herself as she leaned up and captured Natsu's lips with her own. "Mmm!" She jumped a little, pressing her lips more firmly into Natsu's, when his warm hands trailed down her back and took hold of her ass over her short shorts. "More~" Juvia mewled out as they sat up together, leaving her straddling Natsu, feeling the heat and hardness pressing into her from below.
Natsu rumbled a little in his chest as he pulled Juvia flush against him and kissed her again, slowly deepening it as Juvia sank into the warmth of their embrace. "Juvia…" Natsu breathed out once their lips separated, a thin string of saliva connecting them for a second before it broke.
Juvia felt steam starting to wisp off her body as her cheeks burned. The way Natsu's amber eyes were looking at her filled her entire body with heat and love. Without a second thought, Juvia pulled off her tank top, letting her large tits bounce out into the open. "D-Do you like Juvia's body, Natsu-sama?"
"Gorgeous~" Natsu breathed out, his hot breath covering Juvia's slightly pale tits, making her light pink nipples stand up a little more from her arousal.
"Juvia is so happy!" Juvia exclaimed as she kissed Natsu again, pressing herself against him until no space was left, her tits molding against Natsu's defined pectorals.
Natsu swung his legs over the edge of the couch as his hands took hold of Juvia's ample bottom, his fingers sinking into the softness, before he picked Juvia up easily. "Hot spring~" He rumbled out as he kissed Juvia's lips, then her cheek, then her neck.
Juvia nearly writhed in Natsu's arms as her body got hotter, steam wafting off of her topless form. "Yes, Natsu~" She dropped the honorific as she felt Natsu's hands slip into her short shorts to play with her ass.
The door to the bathing area was opened and Natsu walked them inside. Without a thought, Juvia turned into water, letting her short shorts fall off her body before she quickly reformed, now kneeling in front of Natsu as she grabbed the waistband of his pants and pulled them off.
"No underwear?" Juvia and Natsu questioned each other at the same time.
It turned out that neither of them had been wearing anything under their only pieces of clothing today.
Juvia's vision was taken up by the beast that was between Natsu's legs and she felt her face burn as she took in every detail. "B-Big…" She was stroking it before she even realized, making steam rise from her head at her own boldness.
"Juvia…" Natsu breathed out, smoke pouring from his mouth.
"Am I pleasing you, Natsu?" Juvia looked up at him hopefully.
Natsu nodded and ran his fingers through her long blue hair. "Yeah…"
Juvia was thrilled beyond words to hear that and stroked Natsu more. Hearing the sounds he made from her motions made Juvia happy and, with some very heated thoughts, she leaned in and kissed the tip, smearing her lips with Natsu's slickness, her tongue darting out to taste it a half-second later. "Aaah~"
"Juvia, that's…" Natsu wasn't sure what he was going to say as Juvia cut him off by taking him into her mouth. It wasn't the experienced lips and tongue that he was used to from his Mates, but the newness of Juvia's motions was a pleasure that Natsu was thrilled to experience.
