The siblings walk out of the motel and back into town. "Marty, didn't you say that Doc's younger self was at the courthouse?" Ally asked, looking at the courthouse.

"Yeah, that's what the guy said on the phone. Let's go see if he's still there, " Marty said, "Stay close to me," He started to walk into the courthouse yard to get to the courthouse. Ally followed behind him closely.

They jog up the stairs of the courthouse. Just as they make it to the door, Doc's younger self pushes through the courthouse doors and bumps into the duo, dropping his books and paperwork.

"Whoops, sorry about that. We can help you pick those up," Ally exclaimed, leaning down to pick up what Doc's younger self

dropped. Marty started to do the same.

"No, don't touch those! These are very sensitive legal documents... nobody's supposed to handle them but swon

officers of the court," Doc's younger self scowled, bending down to pick up the papers, "Pop-I mean, Judge Brown says so!"

Marty and Ally stare at him in surprise.

They didn't expect that Doc was so... uptight when he was younger. Instead of white hair, he had red hair that was combed back. Doc's younger self walked

away from the courthouse and walked down the steps.

Marty saw something laying on the ground and he bends down to pick it up. "Wait, Judge Brown?" Marty said. "Then that means..." Ally added, putting the pieces together.

"Doc, it's nice to meet you, " Marty said with a grin, "I'm Michael... um. Corleone. And this is my sister, Connie Corleone,"

"Emmett Brown, But I'm a law clerk, not a doctor. Now, you two get out of my way. I have 'important business' to attend to, "

Emmett said, walking down the stairs.

"How're we gonna convince him about the power-drill?" Ally sighed. "We'll figure something out. Let's go talk to him,"

"Alright," she said, following behind him. They jog down the stairs and go after Emmett, who was muttering something to

himself. He just kept walking but the siblings followed close behind him.

"Listen, Emmett.. you don't know us, but we're your friends," Marty said. "I'm not big on friends. They get in the way of work,"

Emmett said, still walking away from them.

"Well, we understand that you're working on a new invention in your lab-" Ally said to Emmett, trying to convince him. Emmett, for a brief second, was stunned. But he quickly recovered and replied sternly, "You two must have me mixed up with somebody else. I'm in Law. I have absolutely no interest in science!"

He then turns and walks away from the sruck-dumb teens. Doc had never told them that he didn't like science the way he does when he's an adult.

"Man, he was so stubborn back then, like in 1955. Why won't he listen?" Ally sighed in exasperation. "We need to ask Doc about this. Plus, he'll want to see that you're feeling better," Marty said, looking at her.

Ally nodded, knowing that Doc was also worried about her. The two jog out of the courthouse yard and up to the police

station where Doc was. "Psst! Doc!" Marty called in a whisper. "Marty! Ally!" Doc exclaimed, jumping back up.

"How're you feeling, Ally? Marty had said you weren't feeling well earlier," Doc asked, looking at Ally worriedly. "I'm fine now,

Doc. You don't have to worry," Ally assured, giving a smile.

"Alright, well, have you two found my younger self yet?" Doc asked. "Well, yeah, we did," Marty answered, rubbing the back

of his neck.

"Great!" Doc exclaimed happily. "Um, not so great. You're really uptight here," Ally said. "What?" Doc said, furrowing a brow.

You won't take a second to talk to us!" Marty exclaimed.

"I find that hard to believe. Tell me what happened!" Doc asked in disbelief. He never believed that he was ever like that or if he even remembered being like that.

"Why does your younger self mutter all the time?" Marty asked, confused. Doc looked at Marty in a puzzled way. "Muttering?

Why would I be muttering? I never mutter, unless..." Doc said, pacing back and forth, "The Hill Valley Expo!"

"The Expo? What is that?" Ally asked. "Yes! The Expo, how could I forgotten! In a few months, the younger me will put on a

demonstration at the Hill Valley Exposition, my first public foray into the world of science! Everyone in town will be there, including a number of noted inventors who shaped my career!"

Doc explained.

"So it wasa big success ? " Marty asked. "No, it was a miserable failure. But it was SPECTACULARY miserable failure, one which marked my transition from an amateur garage scientise into a professional seeker of truth!" Doc replied.

Now they got the answer as to where Doc became a scientist from. But there was still another question that needed answering. "What does this Expo have to do with you muttering all the

time?" Ally asked.

"When I was younger, I used to relieve stress by working on complex mathematical conundrums. No doubt my younger self is working on some impossible problem in an attempt to work off cerebral steam in the weeks before the Exposition, " Doc explained, "What was I muttering about?"

"We dunno, Doc. H to the something, with an inverse of something else. We're not so good with equations," Marty answered, shrugging his shoulders.

That's too bad. I bet if we could solve my younger self's problem, he'd be more inclined to listen to you two," Doc

suggested. "Yeah, but can we figure that out later?" Ally said. There wasn't any time to worry about that for now.

"Okay, but don't forget we're on a bit of a deadline here!" Doc replied. They nodded and walked away from the police station.

Ally felt another headache coming on so she rubbed her head.

You okay?" Marty asked, noticing the small movement. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just a small headache, is all," she answered, truthfully.

You sure?" he asked. "I'm fine, Marty," Ally said, giving him a look. She didn't want her

headache to be in the way of their mission. They had to get it done. "Okay. Let me know if it gets any worse," Marty said sternly. "Alright, " Ally said, "What're we gonna do now?"

Marty looks over to the bank, seeing Emmett walk out of the bank. "I have an idea. C'mon," he said, pulling Ally along. They follow Emmett down the courtyard.

.

Marty then pulls out the tape recorder and held it out so he could record Emmett's voice. Ally smiled at Marty's cleverness. She wouldn't think to do that.

"Rrrrg! Think, Emmett, think! H to the A multiplied by the inverse of A...H to the A multiplied by the inverse..." Emmett muttered. He then turns around to the face the teens, catching them by surprise.

He saw that Marty was holding up the recorder, to which Ally quickly pushes down with her left hand. "Hey, Emmett," Ally awkwardly said. Emmett just rolled his eyes before walking away from them.

"Well, that was awkward," Ally said, inhaling sharply. "Yeah, it was. We can let Doc listen to this, " Marty agreed. They turn around and head back toward the police station.

"Doc, we got something! " Ally called, keeping her voice low.approached the window and asked, "Great, what did you two get?" Marty pulled out the tape recorder and said, "Does THIS ring a bell?" He holds it up and presses the play button.

Emmett's voice came through the speaker, muttering those mathematic problems that his older self was talking about. "Good grief, is that... me? I sound so...: he said in disbelief.

"Young? the dup say simotaneously. I was going to say, 'intense.' I forgot how wound up I used to get, " Doc said with a grin.Yeah, but what're you muttering about?" Marty asked.

"Oh, that's easy! It's Ivanov's Conundrum! Just tell my younger self that H equals the Hamiltonian Operator!" Doc instructed.

"Doc, isn't that gonna mess up the time stream?" Ally asked.

"Only if it turns out that reality is actually nothing more than a holographic illusion created by the interplay of subatomic

particles on a vast 2-dimensional membrane!" Doc replied.

"Huh?" they both said, not understanding what Doc was actually saying. "It'll be fine!" Doc assured. Hopefully that Doc's younger self would listen to that answer. It was their only option if they were gonna get that power-drill.

"Hang in there, Doc," Marty said. "Not the best choice of words, Marty," Doc replied. He wasn't wrong about that one. That wasn't the right phrase to be using; especially in a police station.

They jog down the sidewalk to where the Soup Kitchen was and they stop at the corner. "You see him?" Ally asked, looking

around. As she asked that, Emmett walked out of a building that

was next door to the bank.

"There he is. C'mon," Marty said, seeing Emmett walk out. They jog across the street to catch up to Emmett. He was walking hastily back to the courthouse.

"Hey, wait up a minute!" Marty exclaimed. Emmett looked behind him and saw the duo following behind him. "You two

again? Can't you see I'm busy!" he said in exasperation.

The siblings saw that he was walking more faster, trying to get away from them. Emmett, we've got the answer to your

problem. It's H.Equals the Hamiltonian Operater," Ally said. "Emmett stopped in his tracks and turn to face them. "What'd you say?" he asked. "She said, maybe H equals the.." Marty started.

"Hamiltonian Operator?" Emmett asked curiously before, "Great Scott! If H is the Hamiltonian, then H to the A multiplied by the inverse of H can ONLY be the same as the expectation value for A!"

He laughed triumphantly and started walking away with the duo following him. They given him the answer to the problem that's been bugging him for the longest time. "That's it! That's the solution to Ivanov's conundrum, the problem I've been wrestling in my head all week!" Emmett exclaimed.

"Surely you'd figure it out by yourself in a day or two... the way you figured out how to build that rocket-powered drill-" Marty

said, walking up to him.

Emmett twirled around, now interested in what they were saying. "Where did the two of you learn so much about... science?" he

asked.

Even though it was an easy question to answer, they couldn't tell Doc's younger self the real reason. He'd think they're crazy. They were gonna say that they've read some books from Jules Verne

but Emmett cut them off.

"Wait, you two know about my rocket-powered drill? Then, there

can only be one explanation," he said, walking up on the veranda. "...What?" Marty said. They were nervous that they'd get caught about them being from the future and how it was making Allyy

sick.

"You two are from the patent office! I confess I didn't quite know what to expect when I sent in the paper work but... I never

expected this! Welcome! I'm at your service.. what can I do for you two?" Emmett exclaimed, walking down the veranda and made his way to the siblings.

That rocket-powered drill, can we see it?" Marty asked. Ally was starting to feel a little bit sick again, but managed to keep it

hidden. "Of course! Of course! Naturally, it's just a scale-model, but it's nearly operational. I can show it to you two. I can show it to you two, say, first thing in the morning?" Emmett said, not hesitating.

"No! We need it tonight, Emmett! It's important. We need a fullsized model tonight that's fully operational," Ally blurted out suddenly. Emmett stumbled back, speechless that they need it

by tonight.

"Otherwise we'll have to award the patent to a competing inventor... Dr. McCoy," Marty said. Emmett walked back on the

veranda, leaning on the railing. "It can't be done! I mean, it might be POSSIBLE to construct a full-size working model in that

time, but I haven't got the main ingredient for the fuel... " he muttered. Marty and Ally walk up to him on the veranda.

"We'll get it for you! What is it?" Marty asked him. Emmett turned around to face them, a stern look on his face. "A

hundred-and-ninety proof grain alcohol! And you both know how difficult it is to get ahold of alcohol these days?" Emmett said, walking passed them.

"Especially now that's someone's blown up the speakeasy," Marty said. They watched as Emmett walked through the courtyard while he spoke. "And besides, there's NO WAY I can get off work

until I've delivered this subpoenal! It's part of the investigation into the business affairs of Kid Tannen. Is it vitally important you two see that rocket-powered drill today?" Emmett asked, facing them.

Yes! Is it vitally important you deliever that subpoena today?" Marty asked. "Yes!" Emmett exclaimed with wide eyes. "Look,

we'll give you a hand and deliver it- and see to it that you get the alcohol you need-" Ally said, starting to walk off of the

veranda with Marty behind her.

Emmett quickly shushed her. "If it'll help you get that drill finished by tonight, deal?" Marty finished. "Deal! Here's the

subpoena," Emmett said, giving them the subpoena.

The siblings look at it and paled fora minute. "Arthur McFly? We've got to subpoena our Grandpa?" Marty said, his eyes big. "Oh man, now what?" Ally said, swallowing hard.

"Shh, it's Kid Tannen!" Emmett said in a low voice. He-sees Kid Tannen walking out of the hair salon with his accomplise.

"Marty, he was in the soup kitchen, yelling at Arthur McFly, " Ally exclaimed, her eyes big. They walk up the courthouse wall with Emmett. "I'm not surprised. Arthur does the books for his business," Emmett shrugged.

"What kind of business ?" Marty asked.

That's what the D.A.'s trying to find out, " Emmett answered. "Why don't we go talk to him?" Ally said. Kid Tannen sat in one of the chairs that were for shoe shining with Arthur's hat in the other seat that was filled with peanuts.

"No!" Emmett exclaimed. "Why not? Kid can tell us where Arthur's hiding!" Marty agreed in a whisper. "Yeah, well, he can

also have us fitted for a Chicago overcoat," Emmett inquired before walking away.

"Are you gonna talk to him, Marty?" Ally asked, looking up at him. "Yeah, we gotta know where Grandpa is," Marty answered.

"Let's go then," Ally said, starting to walk ahead but was grabbed by Marty's hand.

"No. Ill do it alone," Marty said, holding onto her arm. "Marty, I-" Ally said, looking up at him. "He's a Tannen, and you know

how they all are. Stay here at the veranda. If anything goes wrong, find a place to hide," Marty said.

Ally looked away for a moment, biting her bottom lip. "Alright. Fine. I'm not feeling too hot anyway. Maybe sitting down will

help," she said, giving in. "Okay. Do you feel like you're gonna be sick?" Marty asked, rubbing her shoulder.

"You mean 'nausea' wise? A little. My head is aching," Ally said, rubbing her head a bit. Marty helped Ally to the veranda and

helped her sit down. "I'll be fine, Marty. See what you can get from Kid. But, Edna's over there, " Ally said, crossing her arms

over her stomach. Those pills weren't as good as they thought.

"Okay, Il be right back," Marty said, walking over to Edna after first seeing her. "Miss Strickland?" Marty said. Edna turns and

sees Marty standing behind her.

"Well, hello, Mr. Corleone. Where's that sister of yours? Wasn't she with you earlier?" Edna asked. "Oh, she's not feeling too well at the moment. She's over in the veranda," Marty answered.

Oh, well, that's a shame. Try not to draw any undue attention my way. I'm on the trail of a hot new scoop, as we in the

newspaper business say," Edna said.

"What's the scoop?" Marty asked curiously. "I've heard rumors that something shady is going on at the 'Sisters of Mercy Soup Kitchen'. It's under new management, you know, and... of, we

mustn't jump to any conculsions, not til the facts are in... I hope to Heaven it's just a rumor... that soup kitchen is the front line in the Good Fight. If it goes bad, what'll happen to the Stay Sober Society? Not to mention all the charitable institutions that depend on me for soup deliveries," Edna explained.

"Well, my sister and I know where the Stay Sober Society can meet," Marty said. Edna was surprised to hear this. "Oh?

Where?" she asked. The Brown residence! " Ally exclaimed, walking towards themn.

Oh, Ms. Corlene, I believe you weren't feeling well," Edna said. I'm not bed ridden sick. I'll pull through," Ally replied, holding

her stomach.

Marty gave her. a look, kind of irritated that she didn't listen to him yet agaiƆ. But he'd have to talk to about that later. "Do you mean Judge Brown's place?" Edna asked. "Yeah, we're actually good friends with his son Emmett... and he's told us the Judge would LOVE to lend his place out for... good causes like yours!"

Marty said.

"Really? Why that's the most generous, public-spirited offer I've received in a month of Sundays! Please tell your friend Emmett we accept!" Edna said, purely overjoyed by Marty's response, but iw was nothint more than a lie.

"The meeting isnt due to start for a little while, so that'll give our people some time to set up." Edna finished. "We gotta book. I need to have a word with my sister for a moment," Marty said.
