The morning sun filtered through soft clouds as Amanda Lopez adjusted her camera strap and stepped up to the gates of the Danville Zoo. Beside her, Milo Murphy beamed with his usual optimism, his backpack clinking faintly with an unsettling amount of supplies.

"Ready for a perfect zoo day?" Milo asked.

Amanda gave him a side-eye smirk. "As long as you don't break the tiger enclosure or cause a flamingo uprising, I think we'll be fine."

"I mean, statistically speaking, that exact combination is unlikely to happen again," Milo replied cheerfully.

The zoo was alive with color and movement. Peacocks strutted near the paths, kids clutched melted ice cream cones, and the air was filled with birdcalls and the distant roar of lions.

Their first stop: the panda exhibit.

Amanda knelt by the railing, her soft voice floating through the air. One of the pandas—a rotund furball named Mr. Nibsy—ambled over and flopped down dramatically right in front of her. He blinked slowly, then reached out a paw and booped Amanda's nose through the fence.

"Awwww!" Amanda cooed, holding up her phone. The panda actually posed.

The parrot aviary shimmered with color. Dozens of birds perched on trees and ropes, chirping, whistling, and occasionally mimicking visitors.

Amanda stepped in and immediately had a green parrot land on her shoulder. It squawked, "Amanda is AWESOME!"

"Oh my gosh!" she giggled.

Milo stepped inside and paused. "Maybe this will be the one time nothing happens."

He took a step forward.

Snap!

The floor tile gave way slightly, launching a peanut into the air like a catapult. It struck a suspended perch, which swung like a pendulum, knocking into a water bucket that tumbled... right onto Milo's head.

Milo approached with a gentle wave. "Hey there, buddy—oh, wait, watch out for that—"

Whap!

He slipped on a rogue bamboo shoot and collided with the railing. The panda squealed and bolted back into its cave. Amanda sighed and patted his shoulder.

"Don't worry. We'll find one that likes you."

Soaked and blinking, Milo smiled. "See? Hydrated and lucky!"

The parrots shrieked and scattered. Amanda's parrot flew to a high branch and shouted, "RUN AWAY, MILO!"

At the giraffe enclosure, Amanda was handed a few leaves to feed them. The tallest giraffe, who the sign labeled as "Daisy," leaned down gently and nuzzled her hand before accepting the snack.

"She's so graceful," Amanda whispered.

Milo stepped up with his own set of leaves, but the giraffe took one look and—

Thunk!

—accidentally knocked over the feeding cart. Milo tried to catch it, which somehow sent the remaining leaves into the air. A sudden breeze sent them flying across the zoo, triggering a whole procession of hungry animals trailing after the airborne foliage.

"Did I just start a zoo-wide snack riot?" Milo asked.

"Yep," Amanda said, watching a capybara sprint past them like a furry missile.

The penguin house, thankfully, was indoors and seemed safe. Amanda admired the chilly environment while Milo tried to warm up with his emergency blanket—until his foot tapped a lever marked Do Not Touch Unless Emergency.

Suddenly, the artificial snow blower kicked into overdrive.

The penguins squealed with delight as a full avalanche of snow poured into their habitat. One of them actually high-fived Milo on the way down an impromptu ice slide.

Amanda burst into laughter. "Okay, okay—this one liked you!"

Covered in snow, Milo gave a half-bow. "I knew I'd win one of them over eventually."

Then the slide collapsed and sent a snowball flying through a vent, where it eventually shorted the electrical system, causing every exhibit speaker to blare Yackity Sax.

Amanda wheezed with laughter as flamingos ran in circles to the frantic tune.

They sat at the exit plaza bench, watching zoo staff chase an emu with a walkie-talkie in its beak.

Amanda flipped through her camera roll. "You know, I got great pictures. Mostly of animals... terrified of you, but still. Great lighting."

Milo sipped his juice pouch. "Yeah, things went a little sideways, but no one got hurt. And we made memories, right?"

She smiled at him. "We always do."

Just then, a passing goat reached into Milo's backpack, pulled out his emergency peanut butter sandwich, and swallowed it whole.

Milo watched it happen with resigned awe. "That was a new record. Only took all day for something to steal my lunch."

Amanda chuckled, handed him half her granola bar, and leaned against his shoulder.

"Next time," she said, "let's try the aquarium."

Milo grinned. "Jellyfish love me."

She raised an eyebrow.

"…I think."
