Chapter 11: Corn Maze

"Last time on Totally Epic: Life on the Farm, the contestants had to run down some chickens. Courtney and Quinten shared their first kiss, Sunny had a little accident with her chickens. Or was it really an accident? Zuni helped her and to repay the favor Sunny let herself come in last in order for Zuni to stay in the game. So Sunny ended up being last and automatically voted off. It was evening, and the contestants had just finished eating dinner.
"Gee, the day's almost over and we haven't done our challenge yet." said Zuni.
"I guess that means we're going to be doing an evening challenge." thought Quinten.
"Great idea, Quinten." said Daniel in a sarcastic voice.
He just looked at him with an annoyed look.
"Okay, Daniel is starting to get on my nerves." Quinten told the audience.
As Courtney was finishing her dinner, she noticed something on the ground. It was small, gray, and furry, it was Pepper.
"Pepper, what are you doing down there?" she asked.
She gently grabbed the little chinchilla, and put him on the table.
"What's he doing here?" asked Daniel.
"He must've gotten away from Charlotte. I'll take him back to her after we're done." Courtney replied.
Just then, Monica walked in.
"Good evening, everyone. It's now time for today's challenge." she told them.
"Monica, isn't it a little late for a challenge?" wondered Quinten.
"Not for this challenge, Quinten." she told him.
Courtney scooped up Pepper in her hands, and followed the others out of the mess hall.
By the corn fields, Hailey was waiting for them holding a box. Charlotte was by her, looking a little concerned.
"Hey Charlotte, lose something?" Courtney, asked holding Pepper in her hands.
"Pepper, there you are." Charlotte said happily.
Pepper then hopped from Courtney's hands into Charlotte.
"I found him in the mess hall."
"You silly little thing. I told you not to wander off."
And with that, Charlotte put Pepper back into her side bag.
"All right, everyone, time for tonight's challenge." Monica announced.
Hailey and Charlotte then walked up to the contestants and Charlotte handed them each a long candle.
"For this challenge, you'll have to walk through this corn maze while avoiding obstacles. You'll only have this candle as your light source. Oh and one more thing, you'll have to get out of the maze before you candle goes out."
"Sounds easy." whispered Daniel to Reese in a sarcastic voice.
"Yeah."
"The first one to make it out of the maze wins invincibility, and someone will be voted off in the end. But before we get started please hang over your phones."
"Seriously?" asked Reese.
"Yes, Reese. You have to do this challenge by candlelight and not by the flashlight of your phones."
So all the contestants gave Monica their phones and she put them in a box.
"Your phones will be returned to you after the challenge. Now Hailey, light the candles."
Hailey took a lighter and lit each candle.
"All right, and your challenge starts now." Monica told them.
And with that, the teens walked into the maze.
"This doesn't seem like a hard challenge. But then again walking into a corn field in the dark isn't always a good idea." said Zuni.
Inside the maze, there were several different ways to go.
"So how we gonna do this?" asked Courtney.
"It's simple." Reese said simply.
"We just pick a path."
And off he went down one.
"Well he's got the right idea." replied Daniel.
And off everyone down a different path. Some went down the same one together.
"Well, this is interesting." said Courtney, as she walked beside Quinten.
"Yes it is. What do you think Monica meant by obstacles?" Quinten thought.
"I'm sure we'll be finding out soon enough."
And they continued on.
Zuni was walking down a path, looking around with the light from her candle.
"All right, so far so good." she told herself.
Suddenly, she stepped on something slippery and squishy.
"What the?"
She looked down, and saw that the ground was covered in some sort of substance.
"Congratulations, Zuni." came Monica's voice over a small speaker.
"You've walked into the first obstacle. Good luck getting through the olive and vegetable oil."
"Oil? Well at least it's not too bad."
She carefully tried to make her way through the oil. She slipped and stumbled, but didn't dare to fall and drop her candle.
With Daniel, he was making his way.
"All right Monica, what've you got for me?" he asked.
He looked around keeping an eye out for anything that looked like an obstacle. Just then, he felt something swoosh past him.
"Who's there?"
He looked around, but he didn't see anyone. He continued down the path, but felt that swooshing again only it felt scratchy and dry.
"Is that...sandpaper?"
"And you've come to your obstacle, good luck getting through the sand paper wipers." said Monica over the speaker.
"Ha, sand paper wipers? Sounds lame."
And then just like at the car wash, the sand paper wipers started to wash over him.
"Ow, okay not so lame, ouch."
And he made his way the sand paper wipers kept swooshing across him, as he tried to keep his candle away from the paper.
Courntey and Quinten were walking together holding their candles.
"See anything yet?" asked Quinten.
"Nothing so far." Courtney observed.
They continued walking when they caught a glimpse of something in the shadows.
"Wait, there's something in here with us." Quinten whispered.
Feeling a little scared, Courtney clung onto his arm.
"Monica, you didn't put something dangerous in here did you?" he called out.
"No, Quinten. Nothing dangerous, but definitely something unusual." Monica told them.
Just then, they felt something wiggling on their shoes.
"What the?" asked Courtney.
The two looked down, and with the dim light of their candles they saw that the ground was covered in a thick layer of slimy worms.
"Worms, gross!" Courtney exclaimed.
"Don't worry, Courtney. They're just worms." Quinten comforted.
He gently took her hand, and guided her through the floor of slimy worms.
Reese was walking down the path he chose, mumbling to himself.
"Can't believe, I have to do this without my phone. I could be getting all sorts of creepy footage and my viewers would love it." he complained.
As walked he tried to see what was in front of him, but that was hard to do with a candle. Just then, he felt something poke him.
"What the?"
He turned around and saw that something was poking in and out of the corn mazes.
"Welcome to your obstacle, Reese. Watch out for the poking sticks."
"Poking sticks? What is this some kind of Indiana Jones movie?"
He held his candle up high, and ran as fast as he could.
All through the maze, the teens ran into several more obstacles, such as walking through animal droppings, getting sprayed with water guns, and having to get past night creatures such as raccoons and possums, all while keeping their candles lit.
They also had to figure out which path was the right one and they got turned around a few times. Soon the candles had melted to half their size.
"We gotta hurry." urged Quinten to Courtney.
"I'm coming." Courtney told him.
Then they came a fork in the road.
"Looks like we're gonna have to split up." he observed.
"Yep. See you at the end?" she asked.
"You bet."
They shared a quick kiss, and then went their separate ways.
"I've got to be almost out of this maze." said Reese.
He turned down another way, and ran into Zuni.
"Hey, you watch it." he told her.
"Excuse me, Reese. I was just trying to find my way out." Zuni replied.
"Well if you'll excuse me."
Reese walked past her and went a different direction.
"I could've told Daniel that that way was a dead end. But seeing how he's being I think I'll let him find out for himself." Zuni told the camera.
"Come on, I must be getting close to the end." Daniel said to himself.
Then he saw Quinten walk down a different path, and decided to follow him.
"Hey, mind if I tag along?" he asked him.
Quinten looked a little annoyed, but let him.
"I know what I said about Daniel, but the sooner we're all out of here the better." Quinten confessed.
Courtney was walking quickly making her way down the path, her candle almost out. Then she saw it, the exit! She ran out, and saw Monica, Hailey, Charlotte with Pepper on her shoulder waiting for her.
"Congratulations, Courtney you're the first one out." Monica told her.
"Yes!" Courtney cheered.
"First one out, and I get invincibility! I hope Quinten gets out soon."
Then one by one the other contestants came out of the maze. Quinten then Daniel and it was now between Reese and Zuni. In the maze their candles were almost out, but they were nearing the exit.
They once again ran into each other, but this time they didn't talk and instead just raced to the exit. Reese looked at his candle, it was almost out.
"There's no way I'm going home when I'm this close. Looks like I'm gonna have to play a little dirty." Reese informed.
With that, Reese shoved himself into Zuni.
"Hey!" she protested, as she tried to remain on her feet.
She quickly regained her footing and continued to run. Reese once again shoved her, but this time she fell to the ground, dropping her candle and it went out. And Reese got out before her, and Zuni came out last.
"And that's everyone. I'll see you all at the elimination ceremony." Monica told everyone.
And they started to head back. As Zuni walked, she glared at Reese.
Back at the grounds, Zuni informed the others about what Reese did to her.
"He shoved you to make sure you came last?" asked Courtney.
"Yep." Zuni answered.
"That's low." Quinten said.
"We need to get that guy out of this race." Courtney declared.
Little did they know, Reese had overheard them.
"Looks like they're trying to plan a coup. So I'm gonna have to do something about it. Luckily, Daniel still owes me a favor." Reese told.
At the elimination ceremony, everyone cast their votes.
"All right, everyone, you've cast your votes. One of you is leaving, except Courtney who's got immunity." Monica said.
"When she calls you name you know what to do." Hailey added, holding the carrots.
"Daniel and Quinten."
The two boys got up, and got their carrots. It was down between Reese and Zuni, and Zuni was confident she'd be staying.
"And the final carrot goes to..." Reese looked at Zuni, and she looked back at him.
"...Reese."
Everyone except Daniel looked surprised. Reese happily got up and got his carrot.
"What?" Zuni asked in disbelief.
"Sorry, Zuni time for you to go."
"But...but..." Zuni protested.
"There must be some mistake." Courtney piped up.
"Sorry, guys. But what's done is done." Monica told them all.
And with that, Zuni sadly left. Reese and Daniel gave each other a knowing look.
"And there goes another one. We're now down to the final four. Who'll win and who'll leave? Find out next time on Totally Epic: Life on the Farm." Monica said to the audience.
