Chapter 476

Tani had been worried about Junior long before this moment.

She had been worried when she talked to him earlier that morning about his father's birthday lunch. He had a strained relationship with his father, he hadn't been sure if he would go. She had given him a pep talk and thought that had been it. He said he'd go for a run and then head to the birthday. He'd do the right thing, everything would be okay.

But then Eddie showed up at the Palace. Surprising because usually Junior took Eddie on his runs with him, in fact she was pretty sure he had taken Eddie with him that morning, and yet there he was on the steps of the Palace wanting to be let in. Eddie was lucky that a security guard recognized him and brought him up to the office where Tani had found him.

After giving Eddie some water to drink, the first thing she did was try to get a hold of Junior. It went straight to voicemail. She tried to ping his phone and only got a rather large region where it had last been located. There was no point in trying to get a hold of Steve who was on a case with his ex-girlfriend and Jerry… and for some reason had taken Tani's boyfriend along.

Tani knew the places where Junior liked to run, she had made him tell her just in case of a situation just like this one, but she had no idea which one he had taken that day. It would take hours go through them all to find him.

Grover had, horrifyingly, told her to go talk to Rowan. Girl was psychic, she could find him in no time. She had been appalled to hear it from him. That was everyone on the team, everyone except her and Junior, who actually believed that Rowan was psychic.

Though, at this point, even though Tani thought it was stupid she was willing to try. If only to prove to everyone that Rowan McGarrett wasn't fucking psychic.

So she got Eddie into a borrowed Five-0 vehicle and drove out to McGarrett's house. When they got there, Eddie made a beeline for the door, same as Tani. She knocked once, but when she got nothing in return, she began to knock a little more incessantly.

After a moment she heard a grumble of: "Oh my god, calm down," through the door just as it was wrenched open. Tani had forgotten that Rowan was most likely on her own that day seeing as her husband and brother were off island, Wo was most likely with his fiancée, Adam was back state side with his wife, Nahele was at school, and now Junior was missing. It had been so long since Rowan had been allowed to be alone, honestly she was surprised any of the men in her life had allowed this to happen.

Rowan looked up to Tani, far from impressed with her. "What are you freaking out about?"

"It's about Junes, have you seen him today?"

Rowan's eyes narrowed. "Who?"

"Junior," Tani explained. "Did he come back from his run? Have you seen him?"

"Right…." Rowan said softly, though she clearly didn't hear the questions Tani had asked. "Why do you want him? You have a boyfriend."

"Rowan that's not about that. Do you know where Junior is or not?"

"I unno, why?"

"I think he's in trouble, and everyone keeps telling me you're psychic. So do your thing and tell me where he is."

Rowan blew a raspberry at her. "He's not in trouble," she said once again ignoring everything else

Tani gestured down to Eddie who chose that moment to rush into the house in search of either his dog bowl or dog bed. She turned back to Tani having clearly realized what Tani had when she had found Eddie. That Junior should have been with him, and the fact that he wasn't meant nothing good.

She sighed as she turned away from Tani.

"Fine, I'll look."

Tani followed her into the house, shutting the door behind her. Rowan went into the kitchen, sitting herself down at the kitchen table, while Tani chose to remain sitting. After a moment her eyes sort of spaced out, like she was looking past Tani and had something up. Her hands came up, her fingers brushing against something that Tani couldn't see. It was almost like she was plucking at a harp, but there was nothing there.

"I'm sure he's perfectly fine," she said and then frowned. "Oh... oh… how… how did he end up down there?" Her eyebrows furrowed as she took in whatever she was looking at it. "Well he's a Navy seal, he can climb… oh no, injured leg. Okay… he does need help then."

Tani might have felt vindicated if she wasn't so fucking confused. "What are you doing?"

Rowan's eyes focused in on her, confusion painting her face. "You told me to find him, that's what I'm doing."

Tani brought her own hands up to mimic Rowan's position, hoping to convey how stupid she looked. "What is this then? How is this psychic?"

"I… I'm…" she started and then suddenly scowled. "You know what, do you want my help or do you want to find him yourself?'

Tani's hands dropped, she lowered her eyes chastised. "I want your help."

"Then, Shut. Up."

She shot Tani one last scowl before bringing her fingers up and unfocusing her eyes again.

"Okay… let's see here… uhm… service," her index finger swiped up. "Nope, of course not. Okay… location," her middle finger went up that time. "Wow… I don't even know how to describe that. Any chance someone finds him soon?" she made a gesture like one did when zooming in on something on a tablet or the smart computer back at the Palace and she frowned. "Of course it's too remote for him to be found quickly… okay… coordinates… nope, no, too many numbers it's making me nauseous. Honestly it might just be easier to throw her there…"

"Throw me?"

Rowan's hands dropped again, her eyes finding Tani once more. "Yes, throw you… straight to Junior."

"What the fuck are you talking about?"

At that Rowan forced herself to her feet. It took some maneuvering, Tani even took a step forward, hands outstretched to help her, only to have them slapped away.

"Look, you want to find Junior right?" she asked once she was standing.

"Yes."

At that a single eyebrow cocked at her. "More than anything right? Cause you know you were right and he's in trouble."

"I was," Tani said with a deft nod.

"You were. Stuck and hurt and can't get out," she said. "Directions… could give them to you, but they're a little complicated cause he's out on some trail in like… a crack… crevice? Fuck I unno, he's fallen into a hole and he can't get out."

Panic swept through her. "Oh my god. We have to… we have to go find him."

"Yes, yes I know, and I can do that. Thing is, instructions… directions… not my forte, but I can get you there. Would you let me? Would you let me get you there?"

"Yes, come on, lets go."

Rowan came around the kitchen table and grabbed Tani by her shoulders. "Close your eyes. Hold our breath. Think of Junior."

Tani frowned at her. "What?"

"Just do as I say," she said again. Her voice coming out low and soft at the same time. Trusting and yet there was a dangerous edge to it.

"Close your eyes." Tani quickly closed her eyes. "Take a breath." She took a quick inhale as the sound of static crackled through the air and a tingle went up her arms. "Now… think of Junior."

This was wrong. It felt wrong, the tingle had turned into something more like a twitch, like her arms wanted to push Rowan away. Tani's eyes opened to find the Rowan staring back at her wasn't one she recognized. For starters her eyes were glowing white, when she looked down to Rowan's arms bolts of orange electric were trailing up her and onto Tani.

Tani let out a strangled yelp but Rowan's grip tightened.

"Think of Junior or you'll get lost," Rowan said, a white mist coming out with each word.

The static was building up, the orange volts no longer contained to Rowan, were now climbing up her. She had a feeling there was no getting away from it now. She squeezed her eye shut, took a deeper breath and thought of Junior. She thought about their talk that morning, she thought about his smile, the smell of salt on his skin and the coconut of his shampoo. She thought about how he always made her laugh.

"Ugh, pathetic," she heard Rowan scoff, like she had heard all of Tani's thoughts, and then she shoved her and she was no longer worried about what Rowan thought of her.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

They had been hiking in silence when both Con and Steve came to a complete halt. Con turned to Steve with a soft: "Did you feel that?"

Steve knew what he had felt, a void twinge, Rowan had used the void for some reason. He was confused as to how Con had felt it.

"Yeah," he said softly, going for his phone right away. No sooner did he have his phone did it ding, a text from his wife.

Situation with Junior, got it handled, sorry if that reached you.

It occurred to him to ask what that meant, but honestly, he was just happy that she was okay. He shot back a: "Okay babe, keep me posted," added a quick: "Love you" and then put his phone back in his pocket.

When he looked up, Con too had his phone out and he wondered if Rowan had sent him the same text that Steve had got. Evidently, he didn't care what the situation with Junior was because he tapped out his own response and then he was putting his phone back into his jacket pocket.

For a moment the two of them held each other's gaze. Steve wondered which one of them would ask first, but neither got to it. Catherine, huffing to herself said: "Give me a second boys," and then moved to a nearby tree.

With in seconds she had managed to climb up the tree, and was plucking and tossing coconuts down. Eventually she came back down, and gathered up the coconuts and brought them over to them where they were standing. Jerry had already found a rock to sit down on.

Wordlessly she held her hand out to Con, her eyes staring him down, luckily Con seemed to understand what she wanted. He offered her the machete he had and she went about cutting the tops off for them. She handed the first one to Jerry, the second to Steve and then offered one out to Con.

Con stared at the coconut a minute before saying: "Uh… I mean… thanks, but I think I'll stick with my water bottle."

And then he pulled one of those thermos type bottles out of his bag. He made a big show of taking a gulp of it, but didn't bother to offer any to the others. Steve bet it was ice cold too.

"Really… you're not going to share?"

Con looked to him confused. "What your girlfriend's coconuts aren't enough?" Steve held Con's playful smirk with a heavy glare and eventually his eyes turned back to his backpack. "I mean… Ro made me pack extra water bottles for you guys…"

His hand came back with a partial frozen plastic water bottle that Steve snatched out of his hands and then passed to Jerry.

"How many did she give you?"

The answer was enough for them all. Except Catherine refused to take hers. She stubbornly drank from her coconut while the three men chugged down on the ice water that had melted for them. It was while they were sitting in silence drinking their water that gunshots were heard.

Con didn't even flinch, though Jerry, Steve and Catherine did. Before Steve could even ask Con said: "Well, we are pretty close."

"Are they shooting at us?" Catherine hissed which earned her an odd look from Con.

"We're not that close."

Catherine scoffed at him, discarded her coconut and took off. Steve sighed and followed after. He could hear someone crashing after them, he was guessing Jerry.

A couple paces away, in a small clearing they found the two men that had stolen all their stuff. They had been shot and left there out in the open, with all their stuff. The only thing missing was their guns. Steve happily grabbed the pack that was his and pulled out his pistol. God how he missed his gun.

"They must have been using our maps to try and find the bunker," Steve said absently, noting that Catherine had gone for her own backpack.

"Did a pretty good job too, it's just over there," Con had said pointing off around a near-by tree. Then, because Steve didn't quite believe they were that close, he went to check.

Yep there it was.

"Okay, wait here…" he started only to have Con grab onto the fabric of his shirt, right by his shoulder.

"No, no, not wait here, I spent three days with these assholes doing everything in my power to get them running in a way that makes sense," Con said.

Steve found that surprising. How had he not realized that Con hadn't been around the last three days? Except that wasn't the hot issue at that moment.

"Wow… Wo must have been proud to hear that," Steve found himself sarcastically snapping at him which just had Con frowning more deeply at him.

"Yo, man, shut the fuck up. I'm trying to keep you from getting shot. These two got dropped cause I told them to shoot anything that seemed weird, and to always have two people at the door. If they're not at the door then they've gone to do as I taught them, which was, drop the problem, make sure they're dead then report it to the person in charge before moving the bodies. You open that door you're going to get shot at."

That was actually smart. Sometimes he forgot how resourceful and good both Wo Fat and Con were at their criminal jobs.

Catherine nudged Con getting his attention. "Do you know how many where here?"

"Like five? I don't know if they brought anyone in after I left."

"You've only been gone since the morning," Steve reminded him.

"I mean you're not wrong… but… that doesn't mean they couldn't have pulled someone…"

"So why don't we send Con in there?" Catherine said interrupting Con entirely, her focus only on Steve though. "They'll recognize him. They'll trust him."

"We can't send him in alone."

"Sure we can, I do solo missions all the time. Prefer them actually," Con added.

"He could pretend that he caught us. He can walk us in… tie us up a bit, I'm sure he'd like that…"

Con shook his head at Catherine. "Naw… I uh… I didn't end the job here on a good note. They told me when I left the island not to come back."

Catherine and Steve exchanged glances before turning back to him.

"… Why?"

"Why what?" Con shot back. He took in both their stares before he caught on to what they were asking. "Oh cause they didn't want me to leave. I said I'd be back later, that they could spare me for a day but that head guy. Masari, he tried to get…. Uh… up in my face about it and I may have…. Uhm…. I may have punched him. Pretty sure if I walk in there they're going to try and shoot me… which is fine, I can handle that, but I probably shouldn't show up with hostages…"

Catherine perked up immediately. "Wait… You saw Masari?"

"Sure, he was who I was hired to work with. He was who I reported to."

"Okay, hold on. If Masari didn't hire you, who did?"

"The guy who's in charge. You know… that Asad guy."

Catherine's mouth dropped in surprise. "You knew I was looking for him, you saw his face on the screen at the Palace why didn't you say anything?"

"You didn't ask me," he said with a shrug. Catherine glared at him but Steve knew exactly what had happened. They had asked Wo if he knew Asad, they never asked Con, and he didn't care enough to offer up any information to them.

"Do you know what he's doing in there?"

"Yeah he's uh… he's using like these little shell bomb things, filling them with DU and then strapping phones to them for remote detonation. I was gonna grab a few for Wo, you know… just in case."

Steve decided, for his mental health, it would be better if he ignored that part. Catherine, however, didn't feel that way.

"But you two got into a fight… how were you going to grab a few?"

"Was gonna ask Ro to open… you know… a door…"

Now that got Steve's attention.

"You wanted my pregnant wife to open you a portal to bombs? Are you out of your fucking mind?" Steve thundered.

"She wasn't going to go with me…"

"No, you were just going to bring them into my fucking house!"

"No, I was gonna have her do this at my house. I'm not that stupid, McGarrett."

In fact, Steve would argue that Con was exactly that level of stupid. He just knew better than to say that to him… to his face.

Catherine came in between them. "We need a plan guys, we need to get Masari out."

"Right, we're going to do this my way. I'll go in, I'll chase him out, y'all grab him when he runs out."

"You think he's going to run from you?" Catherine asked and Con pinned her with a dry glare. After a moment she simply gestured for him to go ahead. Con started by taking his backpack off and digging through it. Once he had what he wanted out of it, he offered it out to Catherine who didn't take it, but Steve did.

Con put the white rabbit mask on, his posture changing the second he did. Straightening, making himself seem larger and more imposing. The gun was next, appearing in his hand, he checked to make sure the mag was in right before rolling his shoulders, then cracking his neck.

"I don't care what you do to Masari, but if either of you shoot me by accident, I'm letting Rowan deal with you."

Steve frowned at that, because that wasn't fair. Rowan was hormonal, she wouldn't have taken news of Con accidentally being shot by them well normally, she definitely wouldn't take it well while dealing with pregnancy hormones. Rowan also wouldn't just yell at them, she'd come up with some sick and sadistic way to punish them, unlike Wo Fat who would just threaten to shoot them back before settling on punching one of them. Rowan would use her powers.

Con walked away from them, walking towards the bunker door purposely and without any hesitation. He didn't try to hide behind anything, he stayed out in the open, until he got to the door. He opened it first, purposely staying out of the way, until he was certain no one was shooting at him. When no bullets came, he walked in, shutting the door behind him.

As soon as the door shut, Catherine and Steve, with their own weapons ready to go, put their backpacks on and got into their own positions. They found trees to use as cover and then waited.

Inside the bunker they heard the first of many gunshots. Steve tried not to flinch, he tried not to hear Wo Fat's voice in his head snarling You let him go in by himself? Something Steve was sure Wo Fat would say if something happened to his baby brother.

They only had to wait a minute, and the door flew open. The man who came out was struggling to get his backpack on.

Steve called out a: "Five-0, freeze!" but the man didn't listen. Instead of rushing forward, he lifted an automatic gun of some sort and started to fire, forcing him and Catherine to retake the cover behind the tress they had picked. After shooting at them for a moment, he wisely chose to veer to the left, disappearing into the jungle.

Catherine and Steve moved to follow him, just as Con rushed out of the bunker.

"Did you get him did you… you didn't get him?" Con cried skidding a stop out before he could crash into one of them. "He's taken one of the bombs!"

Steve had stopped to confirm they hadn't caught Masari but at least knew where he was going. Catherine, however, gave chase. Con swiped the mask of his face and called a: "I got all the others, you can check for your Hawaiian king dude!" to Jerry before following Steve and Catherine into the jungle.

The chase was taking longer than expected. Masari had a head start, and every now and then, he'd turn around and shoot willy nilly into the trees. Every time he did, Steve and Catherine would duck for cover, before returning fire. Con, however, would simply drop to one knee and begin shooting right away.

So far neither of them had managed to get him.

"I'mma get him first, just you wait," Con said to Steve who shot him a bit of a playful smirk after getting up after the last volley.

"You're supposed to be the one with the perfect aim, why haven't you hit him yet?" Steve shot back.

Con shot him a bit of a glare that he knew wasn't as angry as some of the other glares he had shot at Steve that day. "I'm better with a rifle… sniper rifle, if you must know."

Catherine rolled her eyes at both of them, moving to give chase again. "I really wish you two would stop doing that."

"Why?" Con snapped.

"Because he's carrying a bomb, if you hit him, he'll blow up as will my chances of finding Asad."

"Is she questioning our accuracy?" Steve asked turning to Con who was once again frowning. "Did you hear that? She's questioning our accuracy. Now I don't know about you, but that hurts. I'm just saying."

"She's questioning your accuracy…"

"No, I'm question both of you," Catherine clarified cutting Con off. Con stumbled to a brief standstill, mouth dropped open in shock.

"Okay, Steve's right, that's just fucking hurtful. I'm obviously not aiming for center mass, I'm aiming for ass and legs, okay."

"No it is not okay!" Catherine cried but Con just rolled his eyes and continue to jog after Masari who really hadn't gotten that far.

He turned around to shoot at them again and they all took cover except for Con who dropped to his knees again to shoot at him. Masari turned, he went to run, tripped over something and went down. The problem was when he fell, he also blew up. Clearly having landed on some of the unexploded ordinance that this island had warned people about.

Steve came to stand beside con, watching together as the flames went up and body parts went flying. After a moment they both stopped and turned back to Catherine who had stayed behind them.

"We didn't do it," Con said just as Steve pointed at him and said: "He did it."

Con turned an incredulous stare onto him, holstering his gun so he could put his hands on his hips.

"You know, for a good guy, you have no fucking loyalty," he snapped which had Steve wincing at him.

Steve opened his mouth to apologize, but Con turned away, storming past Catherine, heading back into the jungle and towards the bunker leaving them both behind.
