(Note: Hey, guys. So I wanted to try something a little different. Now, I don't normally do this, but I've decided to do a gender-swapped version of "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame." No, I don't mean change the names of the characters because that's already been done before. I mean that it will be a multi-crossover where different characters will be playing "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" characters. However, I will be using some of my own lines and ideas so that some are not word-for-word (you know, to be a little more creative), or at least I'll try not to make it word-for-word. Anyway, here's the cast:
Rapunzel ("Tangled") - Quasimodo.
It was either Rapunzel or Elphaba (from "Wicked") as Quasimodo. Originally, Elphaba was going to play Quasimodo because both Elphaba and Quasimodo are outcasts and are seen as monsters because of their appearances (Quasimodo being deformed and Elphaba having green skin). Ironically, Stephen Schwartz wrote the lyrics for "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" and "Wicked." So I chose Rapunzel as Quasimodo instead. They were both forbidden to leave their homes because they were told by the guardians how dark and cruel the world was, even though Rapunzel and Quasimodo long to be out there.
William Wallace ("Braveheart") - Esmeralda.
Like Esmeralda, William also stands up for himself and others and fights for what he believes in - freedom. He can also be a bit witty at times, fiery and stubborn, like Esmeralda, and they're both judged because of their race (Esmeralda being a gypsy and William being a Scot). Well, you get it.
Murron MacClannough ("Braveheart") - Phoebus.
She's William's wife in "Braveheart." I know Murron might be a little out-of-character as Phoebus. Well, since Esmeralda falls in love with Phoebus, Murron falls in love with William, so that's why I cast her as Phoebus.
Mother Gothel ("Tangled") - Judge Claude Frollo.
It was either Gothel or Madame Morrible (also from "Wicked") as Frollo since they're both villains. So I chose Gothel as Frollo instead. Like I said before, she (like Frollo) tells Rapunzel how dark and cruel the world is and keeps her locked up in a tower because of it. She and Frollo are also very abusive to their "children" (Rapunzel for Mother Gothel and Quasimodo for Frollo). Except instead of being obsessed with Rapunzel's hair in "Tangled", Mother Gothel is obsessed with William (like how Frollo is obsessed with Esmeralda) in this version.
Terk ("Tarzan"), Isabelle ("Animal Crossing") and Rafiki ("The Lion King") - Hugo, Victor and Laverne.
Terk and Rafiki are both comic relief characters in their stories ("Tarzan" and "The Lion King"), and I can picture Terk cracking jokes like Hugo, Rafiki is wise like Laverne and Isabelle can kind of be a bit of a worrywart (like Victor who often gets anxiety). In the "Animal Crossing" video game series, Isabelle is a secretary and doesn't like conflict, which is why I cast her as Victor.
Gandalf ("The Lord Of The Rings") - The Archdeacon.
It was either Gandalf or Jean Valjean as the Archdeacon (mainly because Jean Valjean is in another Victor Hugo novel, "Les Miserables" and believes in God), but then I went with Gandalf. Both Gandalf and The Archdeacon are old and wise (like Valjean). Now, I may not have read "The Lord Of The Rings", but Gandalf and The Archdeacon both have this fatherly-like presence around them, which is why I chose Gandalf as The Archdeacon.
Glinda ("Wicked") (Kristin Chenoweth version) - Clopin.
They're the narrators of their stories and know who the main protagonist is (Glinda knows Elphaba and Clopin knows Quasimodo). They're also kind of bubbly (well, Glinda is more bubbly than Clopin who's entertaining).
Navi ("The Legend Of Zelda") - Clopin's puppet.
I thought it would be kind of cute if Glinda had a fairy companion (Navi) as her "puppet."
Nala ("The Lion King") - Achilles.
I know Achilles is a horse, but I decided to replace him with Nala, a lion.
Lady ("Lady And The Tramp") - Djali.
For those who have not read the original "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" novel, Djali is a girl, whereas it's a boy in the movie (although in the sequel to the Disney movie, they changed him to a girl, if memory serves me right).
The Stabbington Brothers ("Tangled") - Frollo's Guard Leaders.
They work with Gothel at some point in the movie, like how Frollo has his guards that work for him (and later Phoebus).
King Frederic and Queen Arianna (Rapunzel's parents) ("Tangled") - Quasimodo's parents.
Although King Frederic and Queen Arianna appear in the movie, in my gender-swap version of "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame", they both die like Quasimodo's parents.
As if it wasn't obvious, this contains spoilers for those who have not seen "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame", so if you don't want to be spoiled, stop reading now and go watch the movie. Then come back here and read my fanfic version. I'm sorry if some of the characters might be a little out-of-character, but I'm trying to make their personalities like "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" characters. Also, the Scottish rebels will be playing the gypsies in this version. However, Glinda is not among the Scottish rebels. She's just good friends with William, like how Clopin is good friends with Esmeralda. This is also in honor of this year's 30th anniversary of "Braveheart" (May 24), 1st anniversary of the film adaptation of "Wicked: Part 1") (November 22) and 15th anniversary of "Tangled" (November 24).
So without further ado, please enjoy the story!

~ Paris, 1482. ~
Our story begins on January 6, 1482, the day of the Feast of Fools. Glinda Upland was outside of Notre Dame telling the children a story. Although she was a witch, she was not evil. She was the Good Witch of the North. She had curly blonde hair, hazel green eyes and wore a jeweled crown on top of her head. Her gown was sky blue with short sleeves and she had a wand in her right hand. Floating next to her was her fairy companion, Navi. Then, Glinda began to sing.
Morning in Paris, the city awakes
To the bells of Notre Dame.
The fisherman fishes, the baker man bakes
To the bells of Notre Dame.
To the big bells as loud as the thunder,
To the little bells soft as a Psalm.
And some say the soul of the city's the toll of the bells,
The bells of Notre Dame.
After Glinda was done singing, she talked to the children.
"Listen, they're beautiful, are they not?" Glinda smiled.
"Miss Glinda," said a little girl as Glinda looked at her, "Why do the bells ring?"
Glinda giggled.
"Well, they don't ring all by themselves."
"They don't?" Navi asked.
"No, you silly girl," Glinda replied as she pointed at Notre Dame, "Up there in the bell tower, lives the mysterious bellringer."
She then looked back at the children.
"Who is it, and how did they come to be there? Well, my friends, there is a story to that. It's about a princess, a rebel, a soldier and a sorceress. But most of all, it is the tale of a woman… and a monster."
After saying that, Glnida began to tell the tale of the bellringer of Notre Dame.
~ Eighteen years ago (1464)... ~
One night, there were two men and two women riding on a boat to Paris.
The first person had brown hair, blue eyes, a beard and thick brown eyebrows. He wore a golden crown, and robes of blue and gold, with a red cape. His name was Frederic.
The second person had red braided hair, green eyes and freckles. He wore a large fur cloak crapped over his shoulder, a chainmail tunic with striped pants, fur boots and spiked braces over his wrists. His name was Stoick Haddock the Vast.
The third person had green eyes and auburn braided hair. She wore a yellow long sleeve tunic, an orange belt and brown pants that appeared layered. Over her tunic was a chest plate with a large fur collar, which had large round shoulder pads, armbands and boots with spikes on the sides and layers of cloth around her waist, with her right leg exposed. Her name was Valka, who was Stoick's wife and lived with him on the island of Berk.
Finally, the fourth person had brown hair and green eyes. She wore a lavender dress, pearl earrings, a pearl necklace and crown. Her name was Arianna, the wife of Frederic. They were the king and queen of Corona. During the boat ride, she held a baby in her arms.
Dark was the night when our tale was begun
On the docks of Notre Dame.
"Shut it up, will you?" Frederic growled at Arianna as the baby cried in her arms.
"We'll be spotted!" Valka hissed.
"Hush, little one," Arianna whispered to the baby.
Four frightened foreigners slid silently under
The docks near Notre Dame.
After getting off the boat, Stoick turned to Frederic and Arianna.
"Four gilders for safe passage into Paris."
Suddenly, the group was surrounded by guards while Stoick and Valka guarded Frederic, Arianna and their baby.
But a trap had been laid for the foreigners,
And they gazed up in fear and alarm.
At a figure whose clutches
Were iron as much as the bells.
The group turned around and saw a woman riding on horseback heading towards their direction.
The woman had curly raven-black hair, large pale gray eyes and wore makeup that consisted of a light blush, bronze eyeshadow and glossy lipstick. She wore a silky, low-cut, foot-length, gold-trimmed carmine-red Renaissance-era dress with a faintly dappled-pattern, elbow-length sleeves with extended hems, and a belt sash with a golden buckle. She also wore small, golden pointed earrings, and medium-heeled burgundy boots with carmine laces.
Many people in Paris knew who she was and feared her. She was known as the Mistress of Justice.
"Mother Gothel!" Frederic cried as Gothel got closer to the group and glared at them.
The bells of Notre Dame.
Mother Gothel longed
To purge the world
Of vice and sin.
And she saw corruption everywhere,
Except within.
Suddenly, the guards grabbed Frederic, Valka and Stoick and put them in chains, separating them from Arianna.
"Bring these foreign vermin to the Palace of Justice," Gothel snarled.
"You there! What are you hiding?" the guard questioned as he noticed the bundle that Arianna held in her arms and grabbed her, while she struggled to break free from his grasp, clutching the bundle in her arms.
"Stolen goods, no doubt," Gothel observed, "Take them from her."
"She ran!" Glinda exclaimed while the children were intrigued by her tale.
Arianna's heart was hammering in her chest as she ran as fast as she could to get away from Gothel, who was hot on her trail.
Then, Arianna found a fence and jumped over it, heading towards Notre Dame and ran to the door
"Sanctuary!" Arianna cried while banging the door, "Please, give us sanctuary!"
Arianna heard the sound of a horse galloping. When she turned around, she saw Gothel again and she got closer to the poor woman. Arianna's eyes widened as she yet again tried to escape Gothel's clutches, only for Gothel to snatch the bundle from her arms and kicked to the ground, dead.
Gothel took the bundle and examined it.
"A baby?"
She stared at the baby who started crying again and noticed its long, blonde hair. The baby was a girl.
Suddenly, her hair began to glow and the cut on her face magically healed on its own.
Gothel was stupefied. She had never seen anything like it. Since when did hair magically glow and heal people (including her and Gothel)?
"Witchcraft!" Gothel gasped.
Gothel immediately regretted killing Arianna, leaving her daughter as an orphan. Gothel frantically looked around trying to get rid of this… creature. This demon from hell.
Then, she came upon a nearby well. Gothel knew what she had to do. If she was going to burn in hell for what she was about to do to this poor child, then so be it.
As Gothel rode over to the well, she was about to drop the baby in it until a voice cried out, "Stop!"
"Cried Gandalf."
Gandalf was an old man with long white hair, which matched the color of his beard and had black eyes. He wore a white robe, gray scarf and black boots. Like Glinda, Gandalf also carried a staff with him.
"This is an unholy demon," Gothel told Gandalf, irritated that he interrupted her task, "I'm sending it back to hell, where it belongs."
Gandalf went up to Arianna and cradled her limp body in his arms. What kind of monster would kill a poor innocent woman and leaving her daughter without a mother?
"See there the innocent blood you have spilt on the steps of Notre Dame?" Gandalf sang.
"I am guiltless. She ran, I pursued," said Gothel, feeling no remorse for her crime.
"Now you would add this child's blood to your guilt on the steps of Notre Dame?" Gandalf sang.
"My conscience is clear!" Gothel snapped.
"You can lie to yourself and your minions. You can claim that you haven't a qualm. But you never can run from nor hide what you've done from the eyes," Gandalf sang as he pointed at Notre Dame, "The very eyes of Notre Dame!"
Gothel's eyes widened as she looked at the saints and statues of Notre Dame, almost as if their eyes were looking down on her with anger on their faces.
And for one time in her life
Of power and control.
Gothel felt a twinge of fear
For her immortal soul.
"What must I do?" Gothel asked as she continued to stare at the saints and statues.
"Care for the child," Gandalf replied as he stood up to face Gothel, carrying the limp body of Arianna in his arms, "And raise it as your own."
"What?!" Gothel choked as she glared at Gandalf and looked at the baby, "I am to be saddled with this heathen?!"
"She has nobody else," Gandalf interrupted, "She's your responsibility now."
Gothel thought about it for a moment. Now that Arianna was gone, the only family that the baby had left was Gothel. So she would have no choice but to raise the baby as her own. Perhaps this was her sin.
Finally, Gothel let out a sigh.
"Very well. But let her live with you in your church."
"Live here? Where?" Gandalf wondered.
"Anywhere," Gothel responded as she looked at Notre Dame.
"Just so she's kept locked away where no one else can see," Gothel sang.
"The bell tower, perhaps," Gothel suggested, "And who knows? Our Lord works in mysterious ways."
She looked back at the baby.
"Even this foul demon may yet prove one day to be," Gothel sang as a smile formed on her lips, "Of use to me."
~ Present day (eighteen years later)... ~
"After she agreed with Gandalf to raise the child as her own," said Glinda as she was finishing her tale, "Gothel gave her a name that means, "rampion"... Rapunzel."
As Glinda sang the last part of the song, she waved her wand and formed a bubble, which showed visions of Rapunzel's childhood to her adult life.
Now here is a riddle to guess if you can
Sing the bells of Notre Dame.
Who is the monster and who is the woman?
Sing the bells, bells, bells, bells,
Bells, bells, bells, bells
Bells of Notre Dame!
(Note: And that concludes the prologue. In my opinion, I think "The Bells Of Notre Dame" is one of the best Disney openings, next to "Circle Of Life" from "The Lion King." By the way, I'm really obsessed with "Braveheart" (my all-time favorite movie) and "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" (one of my favorite Disney movies, with "The Lion King" being my all-time favorite Disney movie). So, what do you get when you cross two of my obsessions ("Braveheart" and "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame") into one? You get… this. A multi-crossover of "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" with some "Braveheart" characters added in! :D Also, there will be some lines from "Tangled" that will be in this fanfic as references. Just for fun. "Tangled" is another one of my favorite Disney movies, too, in case you're wondering. Anyway, hope you enjoyed the chapter, and sorry if it sucks. But it will get better because I already have a bunch of ideas for this story. I tried my best.)
