First Steps
"I expected her to be a lot more interesting."
Lucina smiled at her two daughters.
"Well, she is a baby, Morgan."
Morgan looked up at her parents and sighed.
"But she's supposed to be me, and I'm/i] interesting. And it's not like you're boring as a baby."
"Babies get more interesting at a good rate. Just be patient, Morgan. I'm sure your counterpart will be as interesting as baby Lucina soon enough." Robin said.
Morgan nodded, but looking at her, Robin knew she didn't believe it. He smiled.
"You know, Marc just started walking yesterday. That might be why he's sleeping so soundly right now."
Morgan the elder's eyes went wide.
"What did you say?"
Lucina smiled.
"Your little brother is sleeping a good deal today, which is a relief. Two of you are quite enough trouble. Even compared to fighting against gods."
Morgan shook her head.
"Not that! I meant the thing where you said that Marc started walking before me. I don't remember that happening. And even if I don't remember much of anything from before I got back, that's a pretty big change!"
"We did want to make a brighter future, Morgan. A few changes are only to be expected." Lucina said.
Morgan frowned.
"Changes are good. Me falling behind, though? That's less good. I might even say, with all due respect to my little brother and my wonderful parents, and all due disappointment/i] in younger me, that this change isn't so good. I'm falling behind!"
Lucina looked at the little Morgan, feeling the need to come to the defense of her daughter, even against her daughter.
"Baby Morgan has been crawling very well. Perhaps she just wants to master that before moving on to new skills."
"But that's not how you grow fastest! You try things when you're bad at them, or else you never get good at them! You and dad taught me that! At least, that's how you said it when I was trying to learn how to ride a horse."
Lucina frowned.
"I don't remember telling you that. And you were, at least, a better rider than your father when you both were in the parade after our victory over Walhart. I don't see when I would have had time for that."
Morgan's eyes went wide again, and she smiled.
"I didn't remember either, until now! This is great! Little Morgan is setting up memories already!"
Then Morgan turned to look down at her younger counterpart again.
"And we can reward her by teaching her to catch up with her brother. Come on, Morgan. I know I can do it."
Morgan the younger looked up at her counterpart, without letting go of the far wall of her pen.
"Goo."
"...Not quite what I was looking for. Let's try this again. When I open the door, you walk to it!"
Morgan opened the door.
The other Morgan did not walk to it.
"I am very disappointed in myself."
"Goo."
Lucina smiled.
"Well, these things happen, Morgan. We all do things at our own pace. I'm just glad that your father has given us a world where we can. Now…"
"Mama."
And the smaller Morgan stumbled over to her mother, taking her first steps to hug her mother's leg.
Morgan the elder sighed.
"See? I knew I could do it. I just needed more motivation."
Robin smiled.
"Or more interesting company?"
Morgan and Lucina both glared at Robin, but he hid himself behind his book. A good strategist always came prepared.
