Chapter 31
The next seven weeks, Matt would go to physical therapy twice a week while Miranda would go see Dr. Gordon to deal with her anxiety and ptsd. The beginning of the eighth week, Matt was finally out of his sling, and had almost full use of his arm. He was finishing the last of his physical therapy. "You've healed up really well Matt." His therapist told him at the end of his last session. "I would recommend you continue to work on the moves at home and add these to start rebuilding your muscle strength." He told him, handing a printed paper. "Thanks Joe, appreciate it." Matt answered as he walked outside where Sam was waiting.
"How'd it go, son?" He asked when Matt climbed in the front seat. "I am so glad I'm free from that blasted sling dad." "I don't blame you." "Now, I just need to get my arm strength back again." "Don't rush it Matt." "I know." He answered as the two arrived home and walked inside. "It's been an eventful summer huh?" "Too much." Matt laughed. "I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm ready for school to start and for things to go back to normal." Lizzy, who was in the kitchen with Jo, smirked. "Did I just hear you say you want to go back to school?" Matt grinned. "Nope." Lizzy laughed, "Whatever nerd. How does it feel to be out of a sling?" "Nice to be able to use my arm again. I was starting to go crazy!"
While Lizzy and Matt were talking, Sam walked over to his wife with a smile. "Don't think I've forgotten what day it is." He pulled out an envelope from his pocket, handing it to Jo. "Happy Anniversary dear." She opened it and Gasped. "Oh Sam!" She wrapped her arms around his neck. Matt headed into Sam's den, coming out a minute later. "What is it mom?" Lizzy asked. "It's a three day cruise for the last week of August!" "That's awesome!" "We got you guys a gift too." He handed his dad an envelope as well. "You didn't have to get us anything." He smiled as he opened it. "Wow kids! This is great! Thank you." "What is it hun?" "It's dinner for two at Chambre des roses." "Kids…How did you get that?" The two teens smiled. "We were doing some odd jobs and stuff before summer, and saved up to get it." "Oh you guys…." Jo pulled her kids into a hug. "Uh, easy mom. Still a little sore over here." Matt grunted. She released them quickly. "I'm sorry honey. But this is just the nicest thing. Thank you." "I already made your reservations for tonight at eight." Lizzy told her dad. "Wow, you guys really went all out." Jo looked at the clock. It read, six fifty six. "Oh, I need to take a shower, pick my dress, do my hair!" Lizzy grinned. "'I'll help you pick an outfit and do your hair, mom." "Oh Lizzy, that would be great. Thank you." Jo rushed upstairs, to get cleaned up while Sam walked over to the fridge to get some iced tea. "Are women always this crazy about date night?" Matt asked, making Sam chuckle. "Yes, but don't let them hear you say that."
Seven thirty came, and both Sam and Jo were ready to go. She was wearing a red cocktail dress with her hair piled up in a bun, while he had on a black suit and red tie to match. "You kids, be good." Sam told Lizzy and Matt as he and Jo headed out. "We will. Have a good time." They went inside, closing the door. "I'm gonna order some food." Matt told her, and he headed into the kitchen. Lizzy followed, but a few minutes later, the doorbell rang. She went to open the door, where Gordo and Miranda were waiting. "Hey, how'd they like the gift?" Gordo asked, kissing Lizzy lightly on the lips. "They loved it! Especially mom. They're on their way to dinner right now." "That's awesome Lizzy." Miranda said, looking over her shoulder into the house, making Lizzy laugh. "He's in the kitchen weirdo." Miranda grinned, before she headed inside.
"Hey good looking, how's it feel to have two arms again?" Matt walked over and pulled Miranda to him, holding her close as he looked down into her eyes. "Nice to hold you closer." He said with a gleam in his eye as he leaned down, pressing his mouth against hers. "Mmmm..Matt." He swiftly picked her up, putting her on the counter. "Y para hacer esto." (And to do this) She looked at him "Gotta say, it's still pretty hot." "I know one way to get you excited." He laughed, making her blush. "I didn't say that." He raised a brow, his hands on the counter on both sides of her. "You didn't have to, I can feel your heart racing." She looked down, seeing her chest pressed against his. "Oh." He laughed again, "Don't worry, I promise not to drive you too crazy."
"Wow, maybe some warning next time." Gordo said as he and Lizzy walked into the kitchen and found Miranda on the counter, still kissing Matt. Lizzy laughed, used to the sight by now. "What'd you order Matt?" "I haven't yet. I got distracted." He said with a grin, making Miranda giggle. "You guys just want some burgers? I can order them from Al's and Gordo and I can go pick them up." Matt told Miranda, while lifting her back off the counter and placing her on her feet. "Sure, sounds good to me. Lizzy?" "Ok, works for me." Matt called in the order, and he and Gordo headed out, while Lizzy and Miranda went into the living room.
"Can you believe school's starting in less than a week?" "I know, and we're gonna be juniors!" Miranda answered, plopping down on the couch. "It's crazy Matt's gonna be in the same grade as me." "You're not changing your mind about it bothering you are you?" Lizzy shook her head. "Matt's been working really hard the past couple years. It's cool he gets to skip a grade." "Can you believe how much has changed since we were in middle school?" Lizzy thought for a moment. "Kate and us are friends again. She and Ethan are still together. Brooke and Danny are dating and so are Larry and Parker." "Not to mention you and Gordo." Miranda grinned. "You're one to talk, dating Matt. Things really have changed. But it's all good changes." Lizzy smiled back.
"It sucks I'm going to miss the first couple days. Can't believe I leave tomorrow." Miranda said. "It's cool you get to go to your cousin's wedding though. And your dress is gorgeous." Miranda smiled. "Thanks. Yea, it's cool. I haven't gotten to see them in a couple years." "Where did they decide on having it?" "Cabo San Lucas beach in Mexico." "It's so romantic to have a wedding on the beach." "Yeah, it is." "Where would you want to have your wedding?" Lizzy asked. Miranda considered it. "Maybe on a beach in California. What about you?" "The Bel Air rooftop Club." "You answered pretty quickly. Is it something you've thought about before?" Lizzy blushed. "A little. But I don't plan on getting married anytime soon."
"You think the girls want to watch a movie tonight?" Gordo suggested as he drove himself, Matt, and a bag of food back to the house. "We could ask them. That new 'Don't go out after dark' is for rent." Matt answered. "Really? The one about the haunted cabin?" "Yep." "Sweet!" Gordo pulled into the Mcguire driveway. "Think we can talk them into watching a horror movie?" "Miranda likes scary movies, you just have to convince Lizzy." Matt laughed, as he grabbed the bag of food and headed inside.
"Hey babe, wanna watch the new horror movie out?" Matt asked, walking into the living room and started putting the burgers and fries on the coffee table. "We should watch it. They said it's the best movie of the year!" She said, excitedly. "Really?" Lizzy answered, doubtful. "Yeah Lizzy. Come on, try it with us." Lizzy looked at the other three and let out a breath with a smile. "Ok." "Sweet!" Matt turned on the large flatscreen TV hanging on the wall, and rented the movie from one of the apps they had.
Over an hour later, Matt and Miranda were sitting on one couch, and she was cuddled up to him casually, while Gordo and Lizzy were sitting on the other, with Lizzy squeezing Gordo's hand. "Don't do it Emily! He's not really in there!" She was yelling at the screen. Matt laughed. "She can't hear you Lizzy." "NOO!" "Well, she's dead." Gordo said, surprised, as the door to the cabin closed and the lights inside turned off on their own, ending the movie. Sam and Jo walked in, making Lizzy jump. "Whoa, it's ok Lizzy, it's just us." "What's got you so jumpy?" Jo asked. "We just finished a horror movie." Matt answered. "That explains it." Sam chuckled. "I don't understand why you kids like those kinds of movies." "They're fun Mrs. Mcguire." Miranda replied, standing up.
"Miranda, you ready? I told your mom I'd have you home by ten thirty." Matt asked. "Sure. Good night everyone." "See you when you get back." Gordo told her. Lizzy hugged her. "Take tons of pictures." "I will. Bye everyone." As Matt and Miranda walked out the door, Jo looked at Lizzy. "So where's the wedding?" "A beach in Mexico." "That's romantic." Lizzy laughed, "That's what I said."
"I'm glad you're doing better." Miranda said, as she and Matt walked slowly, hand in hand. "With you around, I'm great!" They stopped before getting to her driveway. "I'm going to miss you." She said, facing him. "I'll miss you too, baby." He tucked her hair behind her ear and smiled, leaning down to kiss her. "You're gonna have an awesome time." "I know." He kissed her again. Wrapping his arms around her, pulling her close. Her hands ran down his back. "Mmmm…I'll definitely miss this." She laughed and the door opened, "Miranda, time to come in." Eduardo called. "I'll text you when we leave." "Have fun. I love you." She smiled, hugging him and quickly kissing him one more time. "Love you too."
