The days passed in a blur of work, and Sara's pregnancy was something she kept close to her chest — for now. She wasn't ready to announce it to the whole world, but when Grissom and she arrived at the lab that evening, it was clear that it wouldn't stay a secret for long. They needed to know, they didn't have a low risk job, and after discussing it with Catherine, the sooner the better, and safer she would be.
"Hey, Sidle, you okay?" Nick asked as they entered the break room. He shot her a look, his concern evident, he could read her, he always knew she had a cold before she had even sneezed.
"I'm fine," Sara answered with a small, reassuring smile. But then, seeing Warrick and Greg in the corner, she knew it was time. She motioned for Grissom to join her, and they walked over.
Sara paused for a moment, feeling Grissom's reassuring hand on her back. "I'm pregnant."
Nick, always the supportive one, grinned. "Congrats, Sidle! That's huge!"
Greg, standing a little apart, nodded. "Yeah, congratulations, Sara. You're going to be a great mom."
Sara smiled, but her eyes were full of unspoken thoughts. She wasn't sure if she felt ready yet. But she didn't need to be. She had them — her team, her friends, her family — to lean on.
And, most importantly, she had Grissom. She'd survived the past. She'd made it this far. Now, for the first time in a long while, she wasn't afraid to step forward into the unknown.
After the announcement, everything felt like it was moving in fast-forward. Sara had only just processed the news herself, but now, in front of the team, it was real. They all knew. She could feel their eyes on her, their expressions soft and encouraging, but there was also the weight of expectation.
Grissom, standing beside her, felt the pressure too — though he never let it show. He was used to navigating tricky situations, but this was different. This was about Sara. And despite his calm exterior, he knew how much this meant to her. The moment they were alone again, he reached for her hand as they walked down the corridor.
"You okay?" he asked quietly, his thumb brushing against her skin.
Sara nodded, but the anxiety was still there, tight in her chest. "I think so. I just… I feel like everyone's watching me."
"They're not judging you," Grissom reassured her, his gaze meeting hers with understanding. "They care about you. They want to be a part of this with you."
Sara let out a breath, leaning into him for a moment as they stopped by the elevator. "I don't know how to do this, Grissom. How do I just… step into this new role? I'm still figuring myself out. How can I be a mom when I still feel like I'm holding so much inside?"
Grissom lifted her chin, forcing her to meet his eyes. "You've already done so much, Sara. You've faced things no one should have to, and you've come out stronger. You don't need to have it all figured out. I'm here with you — every step of the way."
He opened his office door and as they stepped inside, the weight of the world didn't feel quite as heavy. They had each other, and that was enough for now.
The following morning, after some well needed food, they were curled up together on the couch in the soft light of the living room. Sara was still adjusting to the idea of being pregnant, and Grissom had given her space to process, but now, as they sat in the silence together, there was a sense of calm.
"I keep thinking about the baby," Sara said, her voice barely above a whisper. "What if I'm not ready? What if I'm not the mom the baby deserves?"
Grissom's fingers brushed through her hair, his voice steady and warm. "You'll be exactly the mom they need. You're stronger than you think, Sara. You've spent your life fighting for those who couldn't fight for themselves. You'll do the same for this child."
Sara shifted closer to him, resting her head on his chest. "I'm afraid I'll mess it up. I'll make mistakes… I'm so scared of failing."
Grissom pulled her tighter, kissing the top of her head. "The only failure would be to not try. You're not alone in this. We'll make mistakes together, but we'll also figure it out. And we'll do it one step at a time."
She let out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. "I guess one step at a time sounds manageable."
Grissom smiled softly, his fingers tracing delicate patterns on her back. "You don't have to have all the answers right now. Just let the future unfold. And remember, I'm here. Whatever comes."
