Chapter 4: Arrival in Kanto

The salty Kanto air whipped at Elio's face as the ferry finally docked. The Alolan contingent, a sprawling mass of familiar faces, disembarked, a kaleidoscope of vibrant colours and enthusiastic chatter exploding onto the somewhat drab Kanto landscape. The sun beat down, a stark contrast to the balmy, humid air they were accustomed to.

Elio, at 21 now, felt a familiar pang of unease mixed with excitement. Kanto. Lillie's Kanto. He scanned the crowd, a futile exercise, but a habit he couldn't seem to shake. He knew logically that she wouldn't be waiting at the docks, but the hope, however faint, persisted.

Beside him, Hau clapped him on the shoulder, his ever-present grin undiminished. "Alright, Elio! Kanto! Time for some serious Pokemon hunting! And maybe some Kanto-style malasadas, eh?"

Elio managed a weak smile. "Yeah, sounds good, Hau." He appreciated Hau's unwavering optimism, even if he couldn't fully share it.

The "Alolan Invasion," as Gladion had sarcastically dubbed it, was a logistical nightmare. The Elite Four, the Trial Captains, the Aether Foundation (reformed and eager to contribute), the reformed Team Skull (now eager to prove their worth), the Ultra Recon Squad, and a sizable chunk of Elio's personal friends – Liam, Sarah, Mark, and even Mr. Krabs and his perpetually flustered girlfriend, Mrs. Puffy – had all crammed onto the ferry. The Elite Guard, ever vigilant, formed a protective perimeter around Elio, their stoic faces betraying nothing.

Mamoru, ever the pragmatic one, had already begun organizing the chaos. "Alright, everyone! Professor Kukui's agreed to let us use a large clearing just outside Viridian City as a base camp. The Elite Guard will secure the perimeter. Trial Captains, assigned groups to go ahead and start clearing the area. Aether Foundation, you're in charge of setting up the medical tent and ensuring we have adequate supplies. Team Skull, keep the music down for five minutes, please! We need to get this organized!"

With a surprisingly efficient flurry of activity, the group set off, Pokemon lending their strengths to the task. Machamp effortlessly hoisted heavy equipment, Alolan Exeggutor towered over the proceedings, providing shade and amusement, and even the reformed Team Skull members were surprisingly adept at clearing brush and setting up tents (likely honed from years of...other activities).

Soon, a sprawling camp began to take shape. Tents dotted the landscape, a makeshift kitchen was erected, and a bustling air of activity filled the air. Children from the area, drawn by the spectacle, peeked from behind trees, their eyes wide with curiosity.

The days that followed were a whirlwind. Elio threw himself into exploring Kanto, accompanied by Hau and Nebby. The hunt for regional variants was on, with Alolan Pokemon clashing with their Kanto counterparts in friendly sparring matches. Elio caught a Kantonian Sandshrew, mesmerized by its icy, steely form, while Hau added a fierce Growlithe to his team.

They travelled from Viridian Forest to Pewter City, facing off against gym leaders and trainers alike. Brock, the Pewter City Gym Leader, was impressed by Elio's calm demeanor and powerful Pokemon, while Misty, the Cerulean City Gym Leader, challenged Hau with playful taunts and a dazzling display of Water-type moves. Each battle was a learning experience, a testament to the different battling styles ingrained in the two regions.

But beneath the surface of excitement and exploration, Elio's heart ached. Each new face, each new town, brought a flicker of hope followed by crushing disappointment. He'd discreetly ask about a blonde girl with striking green eyes, a hesitant smile, and a shy demeanor, but the answer was always the same: a shake of the head, a polite apology.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, Elio sat alone, overlooking the sprawling camp. The sounds of laughter and Pokemon cries drifted on the breeze, a comforting symphony, yet he felt profoundly isolated.

Hau, sensing his friend's mood, sat down beside him, offering a comforting squeeze of the shoulder. "Hey, Elio. You okay?"

Elio sighed. "I just… I miss her, Hau. I thought coming here, to Kanto, would make it easier. But it's just… a constant reminder that she's not here. At least, not here here."

Hau nodded, understanding etched on his face. "I know, Elio. It's tough. But you can't give up hope. Lillie wouldn't want you to. She'd want you to be out there, exploring, having fun, and… well, maybe accidentally stumbling upon her in some random cafe while ordering a sandwich, or something!" Hau chuckled, trying to lighten the mood.

Elio managed a small smile. "Maybe you're right. Maybe I should focus on enjoying the journey, instead of just focusing on the destination."

"Exactly! And hey," Hau added, a mischievous glint in his eyes, "speaking of journeys, Liam's been bugging everyone to let him take the boat out for a spin. He says he wants to get some fresh ingredients from Pallet Town market."

Elio frowned. "Liam? With the boat? Absolutely not. The last time he tried to drive anything, he nearly landed us in a Comfey nest."

"I know, right? Mrs. Puffy refuses to even look at him when he asks for the keys. But he's been getting sneakier. I saw him eyeing them earlier..."

Just then, a high-pitched shriek pierced the air. It was Mrs. Puffy, her face a picture of pure panic.

"The boat! Liam has the boat! He stole the keys! Oh, Mr. Krabs is going to kill me!"

Chaos erupted. Mr. Krabs, predictably, was furious. "That landlubber! He'll be paying for this! I'll have him scrubbing barnacles off the anchor for a month!"

They raced towards the makeshift dock, just in time to see the small motorboat sputter to life, Liam at the helm, a manic grin plastered across his face. The boat lurched violently, throwing him from side to side as he struggled to control the engine.

"Liam! Stop! You're going to crash!" Elio yelled, but his words were lost in the roar of the engine.

Mrs. Puffy wrung her hands, her eyes wide with terror. "He doesn't know how to drive! He's going to sink us all!"

Liam, oblivious to the impending disaster, revved the engine, sending the boat careening forward. It slammed into a makeshift pier, splintering the wood and sending debris flying. Undeterred, Liam wrestled with the controls, the boat zigzagging wildly across the water.

"He's heading towards the open sea!" Hau exclaimed, aghast. "We have to stop him!"

Elio knew they had to act fast. Liam, bless his heart, was about to create an international incident, and possibly sink their entire expedition. He looked at Hau, a silent understanding passing between them.

"Nebby, let's go!" Elio shouted, reaching for his trusty companion.

Nebby, sensing the urgency, materialized beside him, its soft, luminous body glowing with power. With a burst of light, they were hurtling towards the runaway boat, Elio determined to prevent Liam from causing any further chaos.

As they soared over the water, Elio could see the boat was now accelerating at a dangerous speed, leaving a trail of churning foam in its wake. Liam, barely holding on, was whooping with glee, completely unaware of the destruction he was leaving behind.

"Liam! Cut the engine!" Elio yelled, his voice amplified by Nebby's psychic energy.

Liam, startled by the sudden voice, turned, his eyes widening in alarm as he saw Elio and Nebby approaching. He fumbled with the controls, accidentally pulling the throttle even further, sending the boat rocketing forward with even more force.

The boat slammed into a rocky outcrop, sending a shower of sparks and debris into the air. The engine sputtered and died, leaving the boat adrift, teetering precariously on the rocks. Liam, dazed and disoriented, clung to the railing, his face a mask of sheepish embarrassment.

Elio and Nebby gently landed on the boat, Elio quickly helping Liam to his feet.

"Liam, are you okay?" Elio asked, concern etched on his face.

Liam nodded, his voice trembling slightly. "Yeah, I think so. Sorry, Elio. I just… I wanted to help. And I thought… well, maybe I'm not very good at boats."

Elio sighed, a mixture of exasperation and relief washing over him. "That's an understatement, Liam. Just promise me you'll stick to land from now on, okay?"

As they worked together to secure the damaged boat, Elio couldn't help but smile. Despite the chaos and the constant search for Lillie, life with his friends was never dull. And even amidst the madness, there was a growing sense of hope. He was in Kanto, closer to Lillie than he had been in months. And he wouldn't give up, not until he found her. He owed her that much.

He looked out at the horizon, the setting sun painting the sky in a fiery embrace. Kanto was a new chapter, a new beginning. And he was ready to face it, one runaway boat at a time. The search for Lillie continued, fuelled by hope, friendship, and just a touch of Alolan chaos.
