Chapter 5: Unnexpected Reunion in Pallet Town

The sun beat down on Pallet Town, painting the idyllic landscape in hues of gold and green. Ten years. It had been ten years since Lillie had left Alola, a lifetime measured in gym badges earned, Elite Four battles conquered, and a champion's title hard fought. Gone was the timid girl who had shied away from Pokémon; in her place stood Lillie, the Kanto Champion.

She knelt in the sprawling garden behind Professor Oak's lab, her hands gently feeding a group of baby Pokémon. A Pichu nibbled playfully at her finger, while a shy Eevee peeked from behind a clump of daisies. Her appearance was a stark contrast to the frilly dresses she had favored in Alola. Her once long, flowing blonde hair was now cropped short, framing a face hardened by experience but still retaining its inherent kindness. A tied plaid shirt revealed toned arms, and short shorts showcased legs that had carried her through countless battles. She had grown, not just in height, but in strength and confidence, blossoming into a tall, athletic young woman with a tomboyish charm.

Beside her, Selene, whose signature long black braid trailed down her back, chuckled. "They really seem to like you, Lillie. You have a way with the little ones."

Lillie smiled. "They remind me of Nebby when he was just a Cosmog. So small and helpless."

Elio's cousin, a bright, energetic young woman named Akari busied herself by refilling a bowl of Pokémon food. "It's amazing how much they grow, isn't it? Like you! You're the Kanto Champion now! I still remember when you were too scared to even touch a Pokémon."

Lillie playfully nudged Akari. "Hey! Enough with the embarrassing stories! That was a long time ago."

Suddenly, the air shimmered with an otherworldly light. A majestic Solgaleo materialized in the middle of the garden, its golden mane radiating power. Lillie gasped, her eyes widening in disbelief.

"Nebby?" she whispered, hardly daring to believe what she saw.

The Solgaleo let out a soft roar, recognizing the familiar voice. Its large, feline eyes locked onto Lillie, and it lowered its head in a gesture of affection.

Before Lillie could even approach, two familiar figures emerged from behind the legendary Pokémon. Elio, his dark hair now slightly longer and styled in a more mature fashion, stood beaming, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. Beside him was Hau, radiating his usual boundless energy, his grin as wide as the Alolan sky.

"Lillie!" Hau exclaimed, rushing forward to engulf her in a hug. "It's so good to see you!"

Elio, on the other hand, seemed rooted to the spot, his eyes fixed on Lillie with an intensity that made her heart flutter. He still remembered that shy girl, but here she was, a champion, confident and strong. He found himself speechless, suddenly aware of the ten years that had passed and the distance that had grown between them.

Lillie returned Hau's hug, then turned her attention to Elio. "Elio! What are you doing here? And Nebby… how did you find him?"

Hau, ever the explainer, jumped in. "We came to Kanto with a group of friends! We're studying regional variants of Pokémon. It's a fascinating project! Professor Kukui is leading the research, and we wanted to see all the cool Pokémon that Kanto has to offer!"

Elio finally found his voice, although his cheeks remained flushed. "And… and I wanted to see you. I've been following your progress. Becoming the Champion… it's amazing, Lillie."

Lillie couldn't help but tease him, a playful glint returning to her eyes. "Oh, you came all this way just to see me? You could have just sent a postcard, you know."

Elio stammered, his face turning a shade of crimson that rivaled a Magmar's hide. "Well… I… I wanted to see you in person. To congratulate you properly."

Hau, sensing the awkwardness, cleared his throat loudly. "So, Lillie, what do you say? Want to hear about our research? We've seen some crazy stuff! A Rattata with whiskers? A Meowth that's as dark as night? You wouldn't believe it!"

Lillie laughed, the sound light and melodious. "Of course! I'd love to hear all about it. But first, you have to tell me how you managed to convince Nebby to carry you all the way here."

The afternoon flew by in a whirlwind of stories and laughter. Lillie learned about the fascinating differences between Alolan and Kantonian Pokémon, listening intently as Elio described the nuances of their adaptations. Hau regaled them with humorous anecdotes of their adventures, his infectious enthusiasm filling the air.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant hues of orange and purple, Elio extended an invitation. "We're staying at a small lodge just outside of Viridian City. The whole group is there. Would you… would you want to come and meet them? Maybe even join us in our research?"

Lillie hesitated for a moment. She had built a life for herself in Kanto, a life centered around training and battling. But the thought of reuniting with her old friends, of immersing herself in the fascinating world of Pokémon research, was immensely appealing.

"I… I don't know," she said, her voice tinged with uncertainty. "I have responsibilities here. As Champion..."

"We could really use your expertise, Lillie," Elio urged, his eyes pleading. "You've seen so many different kinds of Pokémon. You could offer a unique perspective."

Hau chimed in. "Yeah! And it would be so much fun! We could explore the region together, battle new trainers, and discover amazing new things!"

Lillie glanced at Nebby, who nudged her gently with its head, its eyes filled with unwavering affection. She looked at Elio, his face radiating sincerity, and then at Hau, his boundless enthusiasm infectious. A smile slowly spread across her face.

"Okay," she said, her voice filled with newfound determination. "I'll do it. I'll join you."

Elio's face lit up with a joy that mirrored the setting sun. "Really? That's amazing, Lillie! Thank you!"

Hau whooped with delight. "Yes! This is going to be awesome!"

Lillie spent the next day tying up loose ends, informing Professor Oak of her temporary departure and making arrangements for her Pokémon to be cared for in her absence. The prospect of leaving her champion duties behind, even for a short while, filled her with a mix of excitement and trepidation.

As she stood on the outskirts of Viridian City, the lodge coming into view, she took a deep breath, a sense of anticipation building within her. She was about to embark on a new adventure, a journey fueled by friendship, curiosity, and the unwavering bond she shared with her Pokémon.

The lodge was a rustic building, its wooden walls adorned with climbing vines and potted plants. Laughter and chatter emanated from within, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Hau, eager to show her off, burst through the door. "She's here! Lillie's here!"

A chorus of greetings erupted from inside the lodge. Lillie stepped inside, and her eyes widened in surprise.

Standing before her was a group of familiar faces, people she hadn't seen in years. Professor Kukui, his signature lab coat slightly disheveled, stood beaming. Gladion, his silver hair as striking as ever, offered a rare, small smile. Lana, Mallow, and Kiawe, her friends from the Alola Trials, greeted her with warm embraces.

And then there was Moon, another trainer from Alola, who Lillie had seen during her journey in Alola.

"Lillie!" Professor Kukui boomed, his voice filled with warmth. "It's so good to see you! We've heard so much about your success in Kanto. We're thrilled to have you join us."

Lillie was overwhelmed by the outpouring of affection. It felt like no time had passed at all, like they had simply picked up where they had left off.

The evening was filled with stories, laughter, and shared memories. Lillie learned about the incredible progress they had made in their research, discovering new insights into the adaptations and behaviors of regional variant Pokémon. She shared her own experiences as the Kanto Champion, recounting her battles and the challenges she had faced.

As the night drew to a close, Lillie found herself sitting beside Elio on the porch, gazing at the starlit sky. The air was filled with a comfortable silence, a silence that spoke volumes.

"Thank you, Elio," Lillie said softly, breaking the stillness. "For inviting me. For giving me this opportunity."

Elio turned to face her, his eyes reflecting the twinkling stars. "Thank you, Lillie," he replied, his voice filled with sincerity. "For coming. For being you."

He reached out and gently took her hand, his touch sending a shiver down her spine. Lillie looked at him, her heart pounding in her chest. Ten years had passed, but the connection between them, the unspoken bond that had formed in Alola, was still there, as strong as ever.

As they sat there, hand in hand, under the vast, starlit sky, Lillie knew that this adventure, this unexpected reunion in Pallet Town, was just the beginning of a new chapter in her life, a chapter filled with possibilities, discoveries, and the enduring power of friendship. And maybe, just maybe, something more.
