Chapter 8: The Warning of the Hunter
The crisp Kanto air, so different from the humid Alola Elio was used to, filled his lungs as he and Hau stood just outside Professor Kukui's sprawling camp. The professor, currently engrossed in a heated discussion about regional forms with a visiting researcher, had welcomed them with open arms, eager to hear tales of their Alolan adventures. But Elio, even after a comforting bowl of Kukui's famous malasadas, felt a persistent unease. The peaceful Kanto landscape felt…watched.
Nebby, perched comfortably on Elio's shoulder, suddenly twitched. The Legendary Pokémon, usually content to absorb the world around him, emitted a low, worried chirp. He nudged Elio's cheek with his feathery appendage, his non-existent eyes seemingly fixed on a patch of unassuming ground.
"What is it, Nebby?" Elio asked, his hand instinctively reaching for his partner. Hau, ever the observant friend, followed his gaze.
"Hm? You see something, Elio?" He squinted, scanning the area. "Just looks like… dirt and rocks."
Elio, trusting Nebby's instincts, approached the spot cautiously. He noticed a particularly round, innocuous-looking rock nestled amongst the others. Something felt wrong. He nudged it gently with his boot.
The ground erupted.
A pressure plate, hidden beneath the rock, triggered a violent spring mechanism. A hidden pit sprang open, barely missing Hau, and simultaneously, a volley of darts, propelled by compressed air, shot out from concealed nozzles camouflaged within the surrounding foliage.
Elio reacted instinctively. He yelled, "Hau, look out!" and dove forward, tackling his friend out of the path of the darts. He felt a sharp sting on his arm as one of the projectiles grazed his skin.
Rolling to a stop behind a sturdy oak, Elio quickly assessed the situation. Hau, shaken but unharmed, scrambled to his feet. Rowlet, Hau's loyal partner, launched himself into the air, scanning the trees for any further threats.
"Whoa! What was that?!" Hau exclaimed, his voice laced with shock and adrenaline. "Are you okay, Elio?"
Elio winced, clutching his arm. "I'm fine, just a scratch. Those darts… they looked like they might be… poisoned."
He carefully examined the dart that had struck him. It was crudely made, fashioned from sharpened wood and tipped with a viscous, purple substance. A chill ran down his spine. He knew that color. He'd seen it before, in Ultra Space.
"Poiplole venom," he muttered grimly.
Hau's eyes widened. "Poiplole venom? But… who would use that here? And why?"
Elio didn't have an answer, but he had a sinking feeling in his stomach. This wasn't a random act of cruelty. This was calculated, targeted, and connected to something far larger than they currently understood.
"Let's get this checked out," Elio said, his voice firm. "We need to see the Ultra Recon Squad. They'll know what this means."
They raced back to Professor Kukui's camp, interrupting his lecture on Alolan Exeggutor. Kukui, despite his initial confusion, quickly understood the gravity of the situation and urged them to contact the Ultra Recon Squad immediately.
A video call was quickly established, and Zossie, Phyco, and Soliera appeared on the screen, their faces etched with concern. Elio showed them the dart, carefully handling it with a cloth.
Zossie's bubbly demeanor vanished, replaced by a frightening seriousness. Phyco stroked his chin thoughtfully, his cybernetic eye whirring softly. Soliera, usually the most stoic of the three, leaned forward intently.
"Poiplole venom," Zossie confirmed, her voice low. "And… the crudeness of the trap. The specific type of venom… it's almost certain."
"Certain of what?" Elio asked, his anxiety mounting.
Phyco spoke, his voice gravelly. "This venom... it matches the chemical signature of the substance recovered from the Pokemon capture incident you reported just yesterday. The group that was forcefully taking Pokemon from the area."
Elio's heart pounded. "So, these traps… they were set by the same people?"
Soliera nodded grimly. "And it gets worse. This isn't ordinary criminal activity. This is something far more… sinister."
She paused, taking a deep breath. "We've run a detailed analysis of the venom and the trapping techniques. They point to one group, a rogue faction of our own kind, banished from Ultra Megalopolis long ago."
"Their name... is the Ultra Hunters." Zossie added gravely. "They are dangerous, Elio, perhaps the most dangerous beings we know next to Necrozma."
Elio felt a wave of disbelief wash over him. More Ultra Space trouble? Back in Alola, he had thought that he and his friends saved the world when they restored Necrozma. But now, he was being told that there were more threats, worse than Necrozma.
"Ultra Hunters?" Hau repeated, his voice laced with fear. "What did they do?"
Phyco explained, his voice devoid of emotion. "Before Necrozma's rampage, Ultra Megalopolis was a thriving, vibrant city sustained by Necrozma's light. But these Ultra Hunters… they believed that Pokémon were inherently inferior, a stain on their perfect city. They sought to eradicate all Pokémon within Ultra Megalopolis."
"Eradicate all Pokémon?" Elio asked, his voice rising in disbelief.
Soliera nodded. "They conducted horrific experiments, attempting to weaponize Pokémon venom, to create viruses that would target specific species. They were relentless, brutal, and utterly consumed by their hatred."
"They ultimately sought to slay Necrozma outright," Zossie added, her voice shaking slightly. "They wounded it, and when they failed...that led to Necrozma's fury. The great one started devouring the light, and they were banished for their crimes against our world."
"And now they're here," Elio finished, a cold dread creeping into his bones. "They're capturing Pokémon, using poisoned traps… they're starting their crusade all over again."
Zossie nodded, her face pale. "They are led by one particularly dangerous individual. His name is Cypher. He's cunning, resourceful, and utterly ruthless. He never gives up."
Elio's mind raced. He thought back to his battles with Team Skull, with the Aether Foundation, with Necrozma. He had faced formidable opponents before, but something about the Ultra Recon Squad's warning filled him with a chilling unease.
"We defeated Necrozma," Elio said, trying to inject some conviction into his voice. "We can defeat these… Ultra Hunters too."
Zossie looked at him, her usually cheerful eyes filled with a deep, unsettling sadness.
"Elio," she said softly, "you are a strong trainer. You are brave, and you have a deep connection with your Pokémon. But you must not underestimate Cypher. Necrozma was a force of nature, driven by instinct. Cypher is a cold, calculating predator. He's patient, he's manipulative, and he's utterly devoid of empathy."
She paused, her gaze piercing. "He will exploit your weaknesses, use your friends against you, and stop at nothing to achieve his goals. This is not like anything you've faced before. You must be careful, Elio. Very careful."
The call ended, leaving Elio and Hau standing in stunned silence. The weight of Zossie's warning pressed down on them, heavy and suffocating.
"Wow," Hau said, finally breaking the silence. "That… that was intense. This is really bad, isn't it?"
Elio nodded grimly. "Worse than we thought. We can't just sit here. We need to find them, stop them before they can hurt anyone else."
He glanced at his Pokémon, Popplio, Incineroar and Lycanroc, and Nebby, all looking at him with unwavering trust and loyalty. He couldn't let them down. He wouldn't let them down.
"We need a plan," Elio said, his voice regaining its resolve. "We need to figure out where they're hiding, what they're planning. And we need to be ready for anything."
He knew that the battles ahead would be unlike any he had faced before. He was no longer dealing with simple thugs or misguided scientists. He was facing a cold, calculating enemy, driven by a hatred so profound it threatened to consume everything he held dear.
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the Kanto landscape, Elio knew one thing for certain: The hunt had begun. And he was not going to be the prey. He would become the hunter, armed with his Pokémon, his courage, and the grim warning of the Ultra Recon Squad ringing in his ears. He had to stop Cypher and the Ultra Hunters, no matter the cost. The fate of Pokémon, and perhaps the world, depended on it.
