Chapter 11: The Capture Attempt

The crisp Kanto air whipped at Mamoru's coat as he stood on the secluded beach, the roar of the ocean a constant hum in his ears. He adjusted the earpiece, listening intently to the static-laced voice of his counterpart back at Aether Paradise. "Anything, Mamoru?" the voice crackled.

"Nothing concrete yet," Mamoru replied, his voice low. "But the rumors about Ultra Hunter activity in this region seem to be more than just whispers. I've located an energy signature consistent with Ultra Wormhole activity in the nearby mountains."

He had arrived in Kanto a week prior, dispatched by Lusamine with a singular directive: uncover the truth behind the Ultra Hunters and their cryptic leader, Cypher. The threat they posed was becoming increasingly apparent, not just to Alola, but potentially to the entire world. Mamoru, with his years of experience in security and battle strategy, was Aether Paradise's best bet.

After days of painstaking investigation, following fragmented leads and intercepting encrypted communications, he had finally pinpointed a remote region known for its strange electromagnetic disturbances. It was there, nestled deep within the rugged terrain, that he had discovered the anomaly.

"Be careful, Mamoru," the voice warned. "We don't know what you're walking into. Your safety is paramount."

"Understood," Mamoru responded, though he knew the sentiment was more a formality than a genuine concern. He was a tool, honed and sharpened for precisely these kinds of situations. He was expendable, if necessary.

He deactivated the communicator and began his ascent into the mountains. Hours later, after navigating treacherous paths and evading wild Pokémon, he reached the source of the energy signature: a shimmering, swirling tear in the fabric of reality – an Ultra Wormhole.

The area around the Wormhole was heavily guarded. Men in black uniforms, armed with advanced weaponry, patrolled the perimeter. Mamoru observed them from the cover of a dense thicket, his mind already calculating his approach. Stealth was paramount.

He waited for the opportune moment, a momentary lapse in the patrol pattern, before striking with swift and decisive force. In a matter of minutes, the guards were neutralized, their uniforms appropriated. Mamoru, now disguised as one of their own, slipped into the heart of the Ultra Hunter operation.

What he found inside sent a chill down his spine.

He was in a massive underground complex, carved deep into the mountainside. Row upon row of holding cells stretched into the darkness, each one containing a different Ultra Beast. Buzzwole, Pheromosa, Xurkitree, Celesteela – they were all there, imprisoned and seemingly under some form of control.

But the sheer scale of the operation was what truly staggered him. There were hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Ultra Beasts housed within the facility. An army, waiting to be unleashed.

He moved further into the complex, his senses on high alert. He passed research labs filled with scientists in sterile white coats, hunched over equipment and analyzing data. He saw training grounds where Ultra Beasts were being subjected to rigorous drills, their movements precise and coordinated.

This was more than just a ragtag group of poachers, Mamoru realized. This was a meticulously planned and highly organized military operation.

He secured the information he needed, taking photographs and recording audio logs with a hidden device. He knew he couldn't stay any longer. It was only a matter of time before his disguise was compromised.

He slipped back out of the complex the same way he came, undetected. He raced back down the mountain, urgency fueling his every step. He needed to warn Elio, to alert Alola to the impending danger.

The setting sun cast long shadows across the landscape as Elio, Hau, Lillie, Selene, Gladion, and Mamoru arrived at the secret facility. It was a nondescript building, hidden away in a remote industrial park on Melemele Island. They had been led here by Mamoru's harrowing report, a desperate gamble to understand the Ultra Hunters' plans.

"Are you sure this is the place, Mamoru?" Elio asked, his voice tight with apprehension.

"Positive," Mamoru replied grimly. "This facility is registered under a shell corporation, but the energy readings match the data I recovered from the Ultra Hunter base."

Elio nodded, steeling himself. "Let's go. Hau, Lillie, stay close."

They breached the facility with practiced efficiency, Elio and Gladion leading the charge. The inside was eerily quiet, the air thick with a strange chemical scent. They moved cautiously through the corridors, their Pokémon alert and ready for battle.

It wasn't long before they found what they were looking for: a large chamber filled with vats of bubbling green liquid. The unmistakable pungent odor of Naganadel venom permeated the air.

And then they saw them. Ultra Beasts, restrained and seemingly immobile, were connected to the vats by a network of tubes. The venom was being pumped directly into their bodies.

Lillie gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "What are they doing to them? This is horrible!"

"They're poisoning them," Gladion said grimly, his eyes narrowed. "Using the venom to control them."

"That monster!" Selene spat, her fists clenched.

Suddenly, a voice echoed through the chamber. "Welcome, children. I've been expecting you."

They turned to see Cypher standing in the shadows, a smug smile on his face. He seemed utterly unfazed by their presence.

"Cypher," Elio growled, his hand instinctively reaching for his Poké Balls. "This ends now."

"I'm afraid not, Elio," Cypher chuckled. "This is just the beginning. And you, my dear boy, are going to help me."

"I'll never help you," Elio retorted. "Whatever you're planning, we'll stop you."

Cypher sighed dramatically. "Such wasted potential. You could have been so much more. But alas, you choose to be defiant. Tell me Elio do you ever wonder why I want to exterminate them if I have some of my own?" He paused. "Well my Neganadel have been poisoned by their own venom, thus they only follow my orders I need their obedience." He turned his gaze to Lillie, a cruel glint in his eyes. "Imagine the possibilities, Lillie. Imagine a world free from the chaos and unpredictability of Pokémon. A world where humanity reigns supreme."

Lillie recoiled in horror. "You're insane!"

"Perhaps," Cypher said with a shrug. "But I am also pragmatic. I am simply doing what is necessary to ensure our survival."

"Survival at your expense?" Selene scowled.

"Enough talk." Cypher turned back to Elio. "Bring me your Solgaleo. Bring me the power I need to complete my work."

"Why are you doing this?" Elio asked, desperation creeping into his voice. "Why exterminate all Pokemon?"

Cypher's smile faltered for a moment, replaced by a flicker of something darker, something almost… tormented. "It's none of your business." He snapped.

He raised his hand, and the Naganadel connected to the vats began to stir. Their eyes glowed with an unnatural luminescence, their bodies trembling with barely contained fury.

"Now, my pets," Cypher commanded, his voice laced with venom. "Devour them."

The Naganadel lunged, their stingers dripping with poison.

Mamoru, who had been standing silently at the back of the group, moved with lightning speed. He threw a flash grenade, blinding the Naganadel momentarily. In the chaos, he grabbed Elio's arm and pulled him out of the way.

"Run!" Mamoru shouted. "Get out of here!"

Elio hesitated for a moment, his eyes locked on Cypher. But he knew Mamoru was right. They were outmatched, outgunned. They needed to escape and regroup.

He nodded to his friends, and they turned and fled, Mamoru covering their retreat. The Naganadel, their vision restored, gave chase, their stingers poised to strike.

As they reached the exit, Mamoru activated the facility's fire suppression system, flooding the building with a deluge of water. The Naganadel, weakened by the venom, struggled against the current.

They burst out of the facility, gasping for air. They didn't stop running until they reached the relative safety of the surrounding forest.

Once they were a safe distance away, they collapsed, exhausted and shaken.

"Are you alright, Elio?" Lillie asked, her voice trembling.

Elio nodded, catching his breath. "Yeah, I'm fine. But what about Mamoru?"

They looked back at the facility, smoke billowing from its shattered windows.

"He'll be okay," Gladion said, his voice confident. "Mamoru can handle himself."

They waited anxiously, their eyes glued to the wreckage. After what felt like an eternity, they saw a figure emerge from the smoke, battered but alive.

"Mamoru!" Lillie cried, relief flooding her face.

Mamoru limped towards them, a grim expression on his face.

"He got away," Mamoru said, his voice hoarse. "Cypher escaped."

Back inside the ravaged facility, Cypher stood amidst the debris, his face contorted with fury. The Naganadel writhed on the floor, weakened by the water and the effects of their own venom.

"Insolent fools!" Cypher roared, his voice echoing through the chamber. "They think they can stop me? They know nothing of what is at stake!"

He kicked one of the Naganadel, sending it skittering across the floor. The Ultra Beast whimpered in pain.

"No matter," Cypher muttered, calming himself. "This setback is merely a temporary inconvenience. My plans are already in motion. Alola will fall, and then… then the other regions will follow. Ultra Megalopolis will be mine, and ultimately the rest of Ultra Space!"

He looked out at the ruined facility, a twisted smile spreading across his face.

"Let them think they have won a victory," he whispered. "Let them underestimate me. They will soon learn that Cypher always gets what he wants."

He turned and walked out of the facility, leaving the weakened Naganadel behind. The world outside was waiting, ripe for conquest. And Cypher was ready to seize it.
