Chapter 1
P3X-1212
Jack lead his team on yet another routine mission off world. The old castle was left in ruins and most of the interior was degraded from exposure to the elements. There wasn't much to be found so far and it looked as if they could wrap the mission up early and get back in time for lunch. He then stepped into a room and found a familiar looking mirror.
"Carter." he called.
In short time the team all congregated in the room with the mirror. Sam spied the artifact. "Oh, good. I can run some scans." she stated eager.
Daniel noted. "I guess this is not a washout mission after all."
Teal'c said little and simply cocked his head.
Jack sighed and glanced at his watch. "Could we hurry it up a bit? There is a game starting in an hour."
"Game?" Daniel asked.
"Hockey game on t.v. that I want to watch." he informed.
Sam assured. "It's shouldn't take long, sir." She went to the mirror and began to access the controls. As Sam worked the three men stood around the mirror.
Daniel mentioned. "I played a little hockey when I was in school."
Jack gave a cockeyed look. "You played hockey, Daniel?"
He nodded. "I wasn't bad at it."
He pondered. "Huh! Never thought of you as the athletic type."
"You will find in history that many scholars were also rather athletic." Daniel quipped annoyed.
Sam casually mentioned. "When I was in high school, we didn't have much for girl's teams. Mainly, volleyball. I was pretty good at it."
Teal'c had no real comparison. He declared. "As a youth, we entertained ourselves with games using a stick and a rock."
Jack stated. "Kind of hard to have a little league under a snake."
"Indeed." he agreed.
"What the?" Sam gasped and then tried to quickly disconnect the laptop. She was too late and suddenly they were no longer in the ruins but instead were now in a dark, dimly lit room. "It activated." she warned.
Jack, Daniel and Teal'c shinned the torches about. Daniel quickly figured. "I think we are in some kind of museum basement." He noted the artifacts and cases about.
"Can you send us back, Carter?" Jack asked.
"It could take time." she stated. She then went back to work. "Damn." she grimaced. "The power surge fried my laptop."
"What?" Jack quipped.
"The surge fried the laptop, sir." she told him. "Maybe I can reverse this by hand." she suggested and then laid down on her side, looking upon the inside workings of the mirror from behind.
All they could do was stay put hoping that Sam could reverse the mirror's actions and send them home before they were caught. A few minutes ticked by.
A voice was then heard. "Freeze."
SG-1 paused and looked in the direction of the doorway. There stood an armed female police officer in uniform. She was tall, had brown hair and blue eyes. She shined the light on the team. The light then settled on Daniel's face.
"Daniel?" she asked.
"Um." he was surprised she knew his name.
"You're alive?" she asked a bit bewildered.
He quickly assessed. "I must be dead here."
Another officer came to the basement. He too shined a light about. "What we got, Jackson?" he asked. He shined the light on each face and then suddenly paused when he came to Sam. The light shined in her eyes making it hard for her to see.
Officer Jackson reached over and flipped the switch on the wall illuminating the room. She stood beside herself. She looked at Daniel with a worried expression. "Just what happened? You get recruited on some top secret government bullshit…and now…you are what? Stealing artifacts?"
Daniel asked. "Um…I know this may sound rude and insensitive but, who are you?" he wondered.
"It's me. Lucy." she cocked her head. "You don't know me?"
"I might." he winced. "How do I know you, Lucy?"
"I'm your sister." she stated annoyed. "What the hell? Did they give you amnesia or something? Why are you hanging out with some military…whatever this is?" she wondered.
Her partner spoke. "I don't think he's your brother, Lucy."
"That's him!" she insisted. "My missing brother who the government declared dead seven years ago."
He nodded. "Yeah, and the girl is my sister. Sam!"
Sam had been quietly watching the alternate of her brother, Mark wondering if he knew her. She gave a warm smile. "Hi Mark. I need to ask a question? Where am I here…in this reality?"
"You died." he told her.
"How?" she wondered.
"Plane crash." he told her. "You were a cadet. It was twelve years ago."
Lucy asked. "That woman is your sister, Sam who died, Mark?"
He nodded. "That's Sammy. I don't recognize the others." He then reached up for his radio microphone. "Car 4322 to dispatch. We're all set here." He lowered his handgun and holstered it. Lucy followed his lead and holstered her weapon as well.
Sam explained. "The mirror is not actually a mirror. It's an alien artifact that has the ability to cross realities. Did I ever explain multi universe theory to you, Mark?"
He recalled. "Something about Earth being a cake."
"Exactly! Imagine earth is a cake with layers and each layer is a version of earth. Some are exactly alike and other layers can be different." she grinned and nodded. "Thing is, same matter cannot occupy the same space. If Daniel's alternate self is deceased than he is safe from something cascade failure. I died here so, I'm safe. We need to find out if the Colonel exist here and if Teal'c exist. I also need access to the mirror to get us back to our reality."
Daniel looked upon his sister. "Which one of us is older? I was an only child in my reality."
"I am by four years." she informed. "So, you are a version of my missing brother?"
"I am." he confirmed. "Seven years ago. That would be around the time Catherine recruited me." He looked to Jack. "Maybe their first dial out failed?"
Jack wondered. "Was I even on it?"
He shrugged. "Your guess is as good as mine."
Lucy stated. "I need to see I.D. cards."
Jack handed her his identification card. He instructed Teal'c. "Give the officer your I.D., T."
The Jaffa complied.
Lucy used her radio and called in Jack's card and asked for a status. "Car 4322 to dispatch. I need your to run a military ID. Jonathan O'Neill, Colonel. Driver's License, Colorado. Number is 234...789...6543." She gathered the documents from Teal'c as she waited for a reply.
The dispatcher replied. "It comes back to a Colonel Jonathan O'Neill. Says he's deceased."
"I got another ID and driver's license." she replied. "Murray Smith. Number is 983-456-2198. Contractor."
She handed back Jack's documents.
"I got nothing coming back on that." the dispatcher informed.
She handed the documents back to Teal'c. "They can't find anything on yours." She turned towards Daniel. "So, you were an only child."
He smiled. "I was but, I always wanted a sister."
Mark asked. "What do we do with them? I'm not turning my sister over to the military."
Sam stated. "That would be helpful to not turn us over."
Jack asked. "Can you get us back now?"
"I don't know." she replied. She asked Mark. "Is it okay if I look at the mirror? I know with being a cop and all you have protocols."
"Yeah, you can look." he agreed.
Sam then returned to the mirror to examine it further.
Daniel looked at his sister. "So, were we close growing up?"
Lucy was reeling with emotions. Her long missing brother who she was told died was now back in her life but he knew nothing about her. She sucked back a tear and gathered herself. "Yeah, for the most part. When you were not being the super genius."
Sam listened she worked. She recalled how she was the super genius and her older brother would get bothered by the overachieving.
"Sorry about that." he winced. "You don't speak twenty eight languages and hold two PhD's, I take it."
She replied. "I speak Spanish and street thug. I do hold a PhD in music."
"Oh!" his eyes lit up. "I always wanted to learn to play an instrument. Did other me ever play?"
She recalled. "You did try a few but you never seemed to get the hang of it. You just have no timing."
He seemed down. "I sucked."
She winced. "Kind of."
He miffed to himself. "Why is music so hard for me? It should be easy. I'm a linguist. Music should go hand in hand."
Sam rolled out from beneath the mirror. "I'm not sure what is wrong with it, sir. It won't activate. My computer is fried. I have no diagnostics and it's not like we can take it back to base with us." She stood back up. "Looks like we will be here awhile. I need to get a new computer or fix mine."
Teal'c spoke. "We will require shelter for our stay."
Daniel asked. "What basement is this? A museum?"
"Port Gibson Maritime Museum." Mark informed. He turned and motioned towards his uniform patch. "We're Port Gibson PD."
"Are we east or west coast?" he wondered.
"East coast. Little town in New Hampshire." he informed.
Sam stated. "In my world you live in San Francisco. You married, Mark? Have kids?"
He shook his head. "Nope."
"I see." she felt lonely for him. "With mom, dad and me all gone…" she sighed.
"Mom is still alive." he stated.
Her eyes perked up. "Mom is alive here? She died when I was a teenager."
"She owns the local diner. Carter's Café." he informed. "She feeds us cops."
Lucy nodded. "Best cinnamon rolls in town."
Daniel could not help but ask his new found sister. "Is mom or dad still alive here?"
She nodded. "Both are. They run this museum."
"I would like to see them again." he nearly cried. "They died when I was a kid."
"They would love to see you." she assured. "Port Gibson is a small fishing town. Not a lot goes on around these parts."
Jack asked. "Don't suppose you guys have a hotel?"
Mark informed. "We got a motel. Twin Rocks. The Mitchell family runs it." He then squinted as he recalled. "You knew the son in the Academy. Cam. He was in the Academy with you."
"Cameron Mitchell!" she recalled. "In my world we both graduated and he's test pilot flying out of skunk works."
"He was injured in that crash killed you. Blamed himself. He washed out. Came to work for his mom and dad running the motel." Mark told her.
"That's a shame." she winced. "Cam is a great pilot."
"He doesn't fly anymore." he shook his head.
Lucy then gasped. "So, it was your sister he was dating in the Academy that was in the plane crash with him."
"We were dating!?" Sam asked surprised.
Lucy informed. "He's cute. You got good taste."
Mark smirked. "You realize Cam looks like your brother, right?" he pointed towards Daniel.
"No he…" she cocked her head to the side. "Take your glasses off for a moment, Daniel."
He complied. "I can't see but…?" he wondered.
Sam started to nod along with Lucy and Mark. She declared. "You could pass as Cam's brother, Daniel."
He put his glasses back on. "That's nice to know. So, what do we do with all our gear and where can we put that mirror that is safe?"
Mark stated. "No one come down into the basement. It's restricted. I can store your weapons at the police station. Chief will understand. He used to be Air Force."
"You sure George won't mind?" Lucy questioned.
"It will be fine." he insisted.
"George?" Jack asked.
"Chief George Hammond." Mark stated.
A grin crept across Jack's face. "I gotta see George."
