The rocks were illuminated by the torch that Lucius was holding.
"What exactly are we looking for?"
"Melanie's fiancé, Jake."
"Jake Lockheart, here?!"
"Yes, Madame Leota said the truth would be here."
"And who exactly is this Madame Leota?"
Before answering, Bradley stumbled and fell to the ground.
"Ouch, that hurt!"
"It looks like you've tripped over something…"
Huge wooden tracks extended through the area.
"It's the mining company's railroad," explained Lucius.
A sound started coming from the distance.
"It sounds like… a train."
Out of nowhere, a train was rapidly approaching them.
"Run!" Alyssa shouted.
From the conductor's cabin window emerged the Phantom, with his eyes as red as blood.
"I hope you bring your death certificate…" His maniacal laughter was chillingly recognizable to anyone who heard it.
As the group fled, they reached an area full of minecarts.
"Get in, quickly!"
"No need to tell me twice!" Bradley leaped into one.
Once they were all aboard, Alyssa pushed the minecarts, and they began to move on their own.
The train was hot on their heels, with the Phantom still laughing like crazy.
"I've got them in sight!" Moon yelled, poking his head out of one of the windows.
The friends ducked down from the gunfire.
"We're going to die!" Bradley exclaimed.
"I have an idea, let's split up!" After this, Alyssa shoved Lucius and Bradley into different carts from hers.
"Alyssa, no!" Bradley tried to go back, but it was too late, the carts separated.
"Follow those two, I'll take care of the girl!" The Phantom shouted, pushing Moon into another car and separating him from his own.
"The sheriff is following us!," Bradley shouted to Lucius.
"Damn it, they couldn't have followed the other girl!"
"Hey, she's my friend!"
The gunshots continued as Moon's wagon approached alongside the other two.
"After this, I'm going to take a well-deserved eternal break!," Moon fired wearily, "But stay still!"
"Sure, let me help you finish yourself off," Bradley hesitated.
"That would be very kind of you, thanks," Moon smiled.
"It's irony, man!"
"Come on, rude!"
Moon's wagon was now next to theirs.
"We have to do something, and fast!"
"I have an idea…"
Bradley suddenly stood up.
"I surrender!"
"Well done, kid…" Moon cocked his gun, "Any last words?"
"Yes… Do those guns hurt ghosts?"
"Well… I don't think so…" Moon began inspecting his gun.
"Gotcha!" Bradley kicked the sheriff so hard that he was sent flying out of his wagon.
"And that guy is the right hand of the Phantom?"
"I don't know how he was chosen… Wait, Alyssa!"
The Phantom was next to Alyssa, his robe billowing from the speed.
"Back off!" Alyssa yelled.
"Is this how you welcome a guest?"
The spirit leaped into Alyssa's wagon, grabbing her.
"This is why it's better to do things yourself…"
Gradually, he brought the girl's head closer to the wagon wheels.
"Do you know what it feels like to have your skull crushed by a train's wheels? Let me illustrate…"
The Phantom's strength was much greater than the girl had anticipated; she couldn't resist.
A blow caused the Phantom to release the girl, who held on tight to the wagon.
Bradley and Lucius appeared from behind.
"Next stop: The fall of the Phantom!"
With another kick, they threw the spirit off guard.
"No!" he yelled as he stood up and watched them getting farther away. "This mine will be your tomb!"
"Alyssa, look!"
On the sides, a bunch of explosives were about to go off.
"Where did this come from?"
"It must have been the Phantom!"
"Everyone, down!"
Everything started to explode and collapse as the wagon sped along.
Rocks fell in all directions, crashing against the wagon, until the blows stopped.
"Are we… Are we alive?"
Alyssa got up slowly, observing the mine carefully.
"It seems like it…"
The train had stopped completely. The friends got off, astonished that they were still alive.
"Alyssa, I'm sorry, I can't do this anymore, this is too much."
"What?"
"I didn't come here to die, I came to help you with this stupid story."
"It's not stupid! My future depends on it."
"Why exactly? Can't you find another story?"
"No, I need this one, that's why we must keep going!"
Bradley stood still, with a stern look.
"You're not doing this to help them… It's for the article, isn't it?"
Alyssa fell silent for a moment.
"For God's sake, answer me!"
"What exactly do you want me to answer? This benefits everyone."
"Are you saying that to make yourself feel better?"
"At least I'm trying to be someone, unlike you!"
Bradley was left speechless by that.
"I only became friends with you out of pity!"
Those words were worse than a shot through the heart.
"I see… I thought you were a good friend…"
Alyssa looked into Bradley's shattered eyes.
"I… didn't mean that…"
"Yes, you did, good luck with your 'article'."
Bradley turned around and walked away, leaving Alyssa and Lucius behind.
"That was cruel…" Lucius commented.
Alyssa didn't respond, instead she continued to advance through the mine.
