Kylo headed over to Cameron, who was deep in conversation with Milly. Milly's eyes lit up when she saw him. "Kylo, so nice of you to come! Hang out with us," she said brightly.
"I, um, actually came to just talk to Cameron," he replied, trying to keep his tone light.
"Oh, come on, what do I need to do to get you to notice me!" she whined, her excitement turning into a playful pout. Kylo chuckled softly, glancing at Cameron who gave him a knowing look.
Milly's playful pout deepened as she turned to Cameron, clearly seeking more information. "Milly, he's with Luna," Cameron said, trying to sound reassuring.
Milly's eyes widened in surprise. "I thought they were just friends, like ugh!" she exclaimed.
"Nope, they are together," Cameron confirmed, his tone gentle yet firm.
Kylo stepped in, sensing the need to move the conversation along. "Sorry Milly, but I do need to talk to Cameron," he said, gently pulling Cameron away.
As they walked off, Milly watched them with a mixture of disappointment and curiosity. The night was still young, and she knew there would be more opportunities to make new connections and enjoy the evening's festivities.
As they found a quieter corner, Kylo turned to Cameron with a serious expression. "Cameron, did you notice Pearl tonight?" he asked.
Cameron nodded, slightly puzzled. "Yeah, I did. She looks good, but what's your point?"
"My point is, come on man, stop being blind to it. She likes you," Kylo said, his tone urging.
Cameron blinked in surprise. "Really? I mean, I had no idea," he admitted, his mind racing as he processed Kylo's words.
"Yes, she does. If you don't do something about it, you might miss out on something great," Kylo added, giving his friend a supportive pat on the back.
"But I like Milly," Cameron said, his voice tinged with a mix of frustration and sadness.
"Yeah, well, you clearly saw just now she doesn't like you," Kylo retorted, exasperation creeping into his tone. "Come on Cameron, stop being so oblivious!"
"She might, you don't know!" Cameron protested, a hint of desperation in his eyes.
"Dude, I know," Kylo responded, shaking his head. "But whatever, do what you want," he said, throwing his hands up in a gesture of resignation.
Kylo walked away from Cameron and was stopped by Milly, who was trying hard to flirt with him. He just wanted to get back to Luna before she noticed; he knew she would overreact. He smiled at Milly, trying to be polite, but his mind was elsewhere. He could see Luna out of the corner of his eye, and his heart raced as he hoped she wouldn't misinterpret the situation.
So did you get what you needed from Cameron? I was hoping we could talk, maybe dance?" Milly said, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. Kylo gave her a thoughtful look before responding.
"Actually, Milly, I can't tonight," Kylo replied gently.
Milly's voice trembled slightly as she continued, "You can't anytime I ask you, what does she have that I don't? I like you, Kylo, just notice me please!" Her eyes were filled with a deep longing, and Kylo felt a pang of guilt. He could see the sincerity in Milly's eyes, but his heart was bound to Luna in ways he couldn't explain.
Kylo took a deep breath, searching for the right words. "Milly, it's not about what she has that you don't. It's just... I have feelings for Luna that I can't ignore," he said, his voice soft but firm.
Milly's expression shifted from longing to hurt. "But why? What makes her so special?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Kylo sighed, feeling the weight of the moment. "Sometimes, feelings just happen, without a clear reason. I wish I could give you the answer you're looking for, but all I can say is that my heart is with Luna."
"Maybe I can change your mind," she said, leaning in for a kiss. But before she could get close enough, she was yanked back.
"He is mine, back off!" Luna said, her eyes blazing with intensity.
Kylo's eyes widened in surprise and his heart sank at Luna's sharp words. Milly, visibly shaken, stepped back, her face flushed with embarrassment and hurt. Kylo reached out to Luna, gently placing a hand on her arm, hoping to calm her down.
"Luna, please, there's no need for this," he said softly, trying to diffuse the tension. "Let's just go somewhere quiet and talk."
"No, let's talk this out, Kylo. You should be with me, not her!" Milly insisted, her voice quivering with emotion.
Before Kylo could respond, Cameron's voice cut through the tension. "What about me, Milly? I thought we could, um, be together?" he asked hesitantly.
Milly turned to Cameron, her eyes cold and unyielding. "Please, I was just using you to get to Kylo!" she spat, her words laced with venom.
Cameron's heart sank, his face a mask of pain and betrayal. Luna looked at him with a mixture of pity and disdain. "Wow, show your true colors," she said, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "This is why you will never get Kylo, Milly. He chose personality over you."
"Yeah, but he didn't choose beauty, that is for sure!" she said. Luna's eyes darkened, and she lunged toward Milly, her anger barely contained. Kylo quickly held her back, whispering urgently in her ear, "You are beautiful, and I love you. Don't react; she's just trying to get a rise out of you."
Luna took a deep breath, her body trembling as she tried to regain her composure. She looked at Kylo, his calm presence a balm to her anger. "Okay," she whispered back, nodding slightly, "I'll try."
"That's my girl, now let's leave this party, please," Kylo said, his voice full of reassurance. Cameron, still reeling from Milly's harsh words, was quick to agree. The pain in his eyes was evident as he nodded and followed them out.
As they walked away, Milly watched them with a mix of frustration and disappointment. Her plan had backfired, leaving her alone in the midst of the party's fading excitement. The realization of her loss settled heavily on her shoulders, and she knew that things would never be the same.
Pearl left with them, her heart heavy with unspoken words. All she wanted was for Cameron to notice her, to see her as more than just a friend. Now, she watched helplessly as the person she cared for was heartbroken by a girl who didn't care. The pain etched on Cameron's face mirrored her own internal struggle, and she wondered if there would ever be a moment when he would realize her true feelings.
"Well that was fun, not!" Luna said, and Kylo laughed as he pulled her in for a kiss.
Pearl turned to Cameron, concern etched on her face. "Hey, are you okay?" she asked gently.
Cameron looked at Pearl, his eyes still reflecting the hurt Milly's words had inflicted. He tried to muster a smile, but it was weak. "Yeah, I'll be fine," he replied, his voice betraying the turmoil inside.
Pearl hesitated for a moment before taking a step closer. "You know, she didn't deserve you," she said softly. "Someone out there will appreciate you for who you are."
Cameron looked at Pearl, her sincerity slowly breaking through his wall of pain. "Thanks, Pearl," he said, his voice a bit steadier. "I appreciate that."
Pearl offered a small smile, hoping her words provided some comfort. As they walked together, the night air seemed to carry away some of the evening's heaviness, leaving room for new beginnings and the hope of better days ahead.
Cameron took a deep breath, gathering his courage. He glanced at Pearl, her eyes full of a warmth that made his chest ache with unspoken admiration.
"Pearl, you do look beautiful today, and um, I thought you should know," he said, his voice faltering slightly as he spoke.
Pearl's eyes widened in surprise, a blush creeping up her cheeks. She hadn't expected him to notice, let alone say anything. "Thank you, Cameron," she replied, her voice soft and sincere.
As he watched Kylo and Luna, he felt a pang of guilt. Could he really see past everything? Sure, Pearl was a nice person and tonight she looked amazing, and now he was being so damn shallow. He chastised himself for allowing superficial thoughts to cloud his judgment, realizing that Pearl's kindness and sincerity were far more valuable than any fleeting attraction.
As they continued to walk, Cameron's thoughts turned inward. He needed to try and see Pearl in a new light. She had always been there for him, a steady presence in the storm of his emotions. Her kindness and sincerity were undeniable, and he genuinely enjoyed being her friend. Maybe, just maybe, he could give her a chance and see where it might lead.
Taking another deep breath, he decided to push aside his reservations and give himself the opportunity to explore the possibilities with Pearl. After all, she deserved nothing less than his full attention and open heart. Cameron glanced at her again, her face illuminated by the soft glow of the streetlights, and felt a flicker of hope.
"Pearl," he began, his voice more confident this time, "I really do appreciate everything you've done for me. You've been an amazing friend, and I think... I think I'd like to see if we could be something more."
Pearl's eyes met his, her expression filled with a mix of surprise and cautious optimism. "Really, Cameron?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Yes," he said firmly, a smile forming on his lips. "I think we owe it to ourselves to find out."
"You're not just saying that because of the way I look? I am plain Jane nerdy Pearl on most days. So if you can't see me for who I am maybe this is a mistake," she said, her voice tinged with vulnerability.
Cameron shook his head, his eyes earnest. "No, Pearl. I'm not just saying that because of how you look tonight. I've been thinking a lot about this, and it's about who you are—your kindness, your sincerity, the way you make me feel valued and understood. Those things matter to me far more than any physical appearance."
Pearl's eyes filled with tears as she took a step back. "I think you need to sleep on it, I um have to go," she said, her voice trembling before she turned and ran off into the night.
Cameron stood there, frozen with confusion and disappointment. He watched her retreating figure, his chest tight with emotions he couldn't quite name. Seeking some clarity, he turned to Luna and Kylo, both of whom had been quietly observing the exchange.
Cameron was left standing alone, the weight of Luna's words sinking in. He felt a wave of frustration and hurt wash over him. "I thought she liked me? What the hell was that?" he muttered to himself, running a hand through his hair in exasperation.
Luna, who had overheard him, turned around and walked back towards him. "Cameron, she just saw you confess to Milly that you liked her. And now, just because Pearl looks good tonight, you ask her out? I mean, she is beautiful every day, but you can't see past your ego!" Luna's voice was a mix of anger and disappointment as she delivered her scathing critique.
Cameron felt a pang of guilt and realization. "Luna, wait," he called after her, but she was already turning away, shaking her head in disapproval.
As Luna walked away, Cameron stood there, feeling the weight of his actions and the need to reevaluate his feelings and intentions. He knew he had to make things right, not just for Pearl, but for himself as well.
Kylo, who had been silent until now, stepped forward and looked Cameron straight in the eye. "She is right. Figure your shit out and mean it next time you talk to Pearl," he said, his tone firm yet devoid of malice. With that, Kylo followed Luna, leaving Cameron to grapple with his own thoughts and feelings.
What the hell! he thought, as he headed home. He sat on his bed, head in his hands, the tumult of the evening replaying in his mind. The confusion, the hurt, the anger—all swirling together in a chaotic storm. He had to admit to himself that Luna and Kylo were right; he had let his ego and fleeting feelings get the better of him.
There was a knock on his door and his little sister walked in, "Penny for your thoughts?" she said softly.
"Hey Callie, I messed up big time," he admitted, his voice heavy with regret.
"I did notice you were home from the party early. Want to talk about it?" she asked, her eyes filled with concern.
Cameron took a deep breath, letting the words tumble out. "I told a girl I liked her, and she told me she was using me. That hurt, I won't lie. But then I was walking with Pearl, and I sort of told her I wanted to be with her, but I don't know if I meant it. She sensed that, I guess, and turned me down."
Callie sat down next to her brother, her presence a comforting balm on his wounded pride. "It sounds like you've had a rough night, Cam. But you know, sometimes we say things in the heat of the moment that we don't fully mean or haven't thought through. It's okay to make mistakes, but you need to be honest with yourself before you can be honest with others."
Cameron nodded, appreciating her wisdom. "You're right, Callie. I really need to figure out what I truly feel before dragging anyone else into my mess."
"That's a good start," Callie said with a small smile. "Just remember, it's never too late to make things right if you come from a place of honesty and sincerity."
As Cameron pondered his sister's words, he felt a glimmer of hope. Perhaps tonight's chaos was the wake-up call he needed to truly understand his own heart and intentions.
