Much to Dean's chagrin, Sam drove most of the way to Missouri. The older Winchester was majorly hung over and possibly still drunk. Sam pulled off the highway into Dayton a little earlier than expected so he figured they could stop by the sheriff's department and get some more information on the missing kid. All the information Kate gave was his name.
The sheriff recognized the boys right away from their last time in town. They had "solved" the case of who murdered the Taylors and then brought them Kate Winchester (which he didn't want to think about too much and make his head hurt). Sheriff Jay Green liked Kate Winchester. She was a sweet woman who was amazing with kids, including the sheriff's two angsty teens. He knew the two agents were close with Kate; he hoped she wasn't the one who called them.
"Good to see you boys again, what can I do for you?" Jay put on his best hospitable midwest smile.
"We are here about a kid that went missing. Name's Dezmond Garcia," agent Page greeted him with a similar smile. While his counterpart seemed a little grumpy. (Dang it Kate)
"I am going to make a guess and say that Kate called you," Jay's smile fell. Both boys nodded, "I am going to save you boys the trouble. Dez isn't missing. He ran away. His home life was crap and he just turned eighteen. Kate and the coach have been bent out of shape about it but I have looked into it and the last place he was seen was at the baseball diamond. There is no signs of struggle and his stuff was gone,"
"What about Dezmond's parents?" the shorter of the two agents, Plant, chimed in.
"Dad's been gone for years and mom doesn't give two shits if you will excuse my language. There was nothing tying the kid here," the sheriff responded, "sorry you guys wasted a trip down here,"
"No it's alright, we might as well look into this a little if only to calm Kate down," Agent Page offered a small smile
"Alright if you don't mind wasting your time you can talk to Dez's coach too. Name's Cash West works at the highschool as a gym teacher and baseball coach,"
"Thanks sheriff," the agents gave him a nod and headed out the door. He hoped that the two could get Kate to stop bothering him about the kid. It's not like he didn't care, it was just he knew how badly Dez wanted to get out of this place. He was probably already on a bus halfway to New York. Dez was a good kid who could take care of himself.
"What do you think?" Dean was behind the wheel of his baby, quietly making sure Sam didn't do anything to her.
"I am still giving Kate the benefit of the doubt. She's got to know something that the sheriff doesn't or else she wouldn't have called us," Sam reasoned.
"Yeah but she does seem to have a little bit more of a personal connection to this than she let on," Dean countered.
"It's a small town and Kate probably knows all of the school kids. Don't forget that she is actually a real librarian, that means helping kids study or find research," his little brother argued. Dean had more to say on the subject but he had just pulled into the library parking lot.
Inside it was actually Nyle who greeted them with firm handshakes. The Winchester boys were uneasy about Nyle but he hadn't proven to be a problem yet and he made Kate happy so they let that sleeping dog lie for the moment.
"Where is Kate?" Dean asked, looking around. She wasn't at her desk at the front. Nyle just gestured for the boys to follow him as he led the way to the kids section. Kate sat in a chair in front of a large group of children sitting on the carpet as she read a story to them.
"My, grandmother, what big ears you have," Kate didn't even need to look at the picture book she was showing the children as she read. "The better to hear you with my dear! Said the wolf," Kate did her best impression of what the wolf would sound like and kids gasped in fear. Dean smiled at the scene in front of him. He looked at Sam and Nyle who seemed to be looking at it with the same fondness. Dean couldn't help but wonder if this was the way she used to read to his dad. He imagined Kate curled up with little John reading him fantastic tales as she used different voices for each character. Dean had done the same many times with Sam but Kate had a certain unique ability to capture the children's attention. She was so focused on the little ones that she hadn't realized that she had an outside audience.
" 'But grandmother what big teeth you have,' said little red riding hood, her voice quivering. 'The better to eat you with, my dear!' roared the wolf and he leapt out of bed to attack little red ridding hood!" There were shreeks of terror as Kate animatedly told the story. Dean couldn't help but chuckle to himself. That woman doing story time with a bunch of little kids was one of the most powerful witches who owned the largest collection of magical items. It was so hilariously normal. Despite everything Kate had been through she still got out of bed in the morning and took the time to care about other people. Some might call that being a regular human being but Dean would call it inspiring and selfless.
Children giggled or sighed in relief after Kate finished the story. She looked up to see the three guys watching her. Dean gave her a small smile and she grinned back. After she sent the kids on their way she popped up overjoyed to see Sam and Dean.
"Did you enjoy story time?" Kate asked playfully as she hugged Dean.
"We were on the edge of our seats," Sam smirked as he enveloped her after she pulled away from Dean.
"One thing still gets me though, How did the kid not realize it wasn't her grandmother right away?" Dean pondered the ridiculous nature of the story.
"It's a children's book, Dean, it doesn't have to make sense," Kate patted Dean on the back before leading them back to her desk, which conveniently guarded that wooden door. There were no sigils painted on it so that meant the library was locked, as Kate preferred to keep it.
"So we stopped and had a chat with the sheriff," Sam began, treading carefully. Kate looked disappointed when Sam spoke.
"I was hoping that you weren't going to do that," Kate frowned, "if I am being honest I may have embellished a little," Nyle cleared his throat and looked at Kate possibly in reference to a conversation had earlier. "Okay maybe a lot," Kate averted her eyes in embarrassment.
"There is only one security camera around the baseball diamond that points out to the parking lot but there are other exits. The kid's mother wasn't even the one to report him missing, it was his coach when he didn't show up for practice the next day," Nyle spoke as if it wasn't his first time saying these words.
"Dez would have said something to me if he was planning on running away," Kate argued.
"Katie, the kid was unhappy and I am sorry he didn't say anything before leaving but I don't think he's in trouble," Nyle tried to reason with Kate but she wasn't having it.
"Fine if no one will believe me then I will look for him myself!" Kate stormed out, almost breaking the glass front doors of the library. Nyle leaned against the desk and sighed as he put his head in his hands.
"What is going on with her?" Dean asked with genuine concern.
"See that's the problem, I have no idea. She won't talk to me. She wakes up in the middle of the night screaming from nightmares and the only time she ever seems happy is when she is with these kids. I knew that she had grown close with Dez but there is something else going on with her beside the kid," Nyle explained. Dean could see the worry lines on his face and the dark circles underneath his eyes from the lack of sleep.
"Look, I don't think it would hurt to investigate this. I mean Dean and I have worked on a lot less and if it calms Kate down I think it is worth a shot. Even if we do find out the kid just skipped town," Sam said. He had been on the side of investigating since the sheriff's department. Dean wasn't sure if it was Sam just humoring Kate. He might actually believe that Kate was right and that was enough for Dean. If his brother had a hunch he was going to follow it.
"Why don't you take Kate to go see that baseball coach and I can go talk to the mother," Dean suggested to Sam. He nodded and followed after Kate leaving Dean and Nyle alone.
"It might be nothing but like Sam said I think it will help Kate," Dean turned back to Nyle, "you want to come with me?"
"Why not, it seems like I am going to get pulled into this hunting thing whether I like it or not," Nyle grumbled.
"That's the spirit," Dean hit Nyle on the back.
