Chapter 1:
Lucy stood in front of her apartment, staring at the door. She didn't know how to feel anymore, not a spark of sadness nor anger, just numbness. Everything between her and Tim had ended in a way she never imagined. She gave up so much all for him to just throw it away? And she trusted him, a lot, not only as a partner but someone she could open up easily to, he'd become her safe person. But after the way things had ended, she wasn't sure she could trust anyone anymore. But the worst part of all, she could still hear his voice from that night, as clear as if he were standing right in from of her.
Tim- "Lucy, I've been lying to myself for a long time. That's clear to me now and, I can't… I can't just go back to the way things were. Not right now. Maybe never."
Lucy- "Wait- Are you breaking up with me?"
Tim- "I'm sorry…"
Lucy- "You don't… you don't get to do that you don't get to lie to me and use that as an excuse to leave me ok? That's not ok. That's not ok."
Tim- "I know, I know."
Lucy- "What you're doing is not ok"
Tim- "You, You are an incredible person"
Lucy- "No."
Tim- "No you're incredible, ok? You deserve so much better."
Lucy- " Oh my God…"
Tim- "That's why I'm walking away."
Lucy- "Don't do this, why are you doing this? Why are you doing this?!
Tim- "I'm sorry."
Tears welled up in her eyes at the memory. She had trusted him with everything only for her to feel discarded in the worst way possible. And to top it all off if it all wasn't enough, Tamara was moving out, her stuff all over the countertop packed into boxes all over. Her phone buzzed. It was Tamara.
"Hey you home?" Tamara asked.
Though her voice was casual, Lucy could hear the tension within it.
"Yeah, just got in" Lucy replied, filled with emptiness.
"I'm coming over, no arguments!" Tamara said. No nonsense as always. Lucy hung up and walking inside. She sank into the couch, eyes burning. The anger was still there beneath the layer of sadness, she never wanted things to end like this. She didn't even understand they ended, not really. An hour later, Tamara walking in carrying two steaming cups of hot chocolate.
" I brought reinforcements!" She exclaimed, kicking off her shoes and sinking in beside her. Lucy grabbed one of the cups and stared into it.
" I don't evenknow where to start. I feel like an idiot, I trusted him. I thought-" she paused, swallowing. " I thought we had something real, right? "
Tamara leaned her elbow towards the back of the couch." You did, but he didn't handle it like a grown up. I mean, seriously, who just ghosts their girlfriend with a break up speech about how 'you're too good for them'?"
Lucy barely managed a broken laugh, "Right? It's like some twisted compliment, like he thinks I'll feel 'better' hearing that 'I'm too good'."
Tamara's face softened. " You don't have to justify anything Lucy, he messed up. Big time. You showed up and he didn't'
Lucy sighed, " It wasn't just the break up, it's…it's what he said… That I wasn't that I wasn't ready, that I couldn't handle the job. It feels like everything I've worked for didn't matter to him."
Tamara reached over the table, carefully placing the mug down and leaning in for a hug " You are so ready. You always have been! And trust me he knows that, but, if he couldn't see how amazing you are than that's his loss…"
Lucy looked away, blinking fast, " I miss him Tamara, not just our relationship but all the memories we shared together simply as friends."
Tamara looked at her helplessly, there was nothing she could do than try to comfort her, and, she knew that he moving away made the whole situation even worse.
"Well come on we need to get ready for your going away party"
