Episode 90: Sky High Gym Battle!
The next day, and moments away, Mew is about to begin her Fortree gym battle against Winona, known as the Genius of the Sky. Mew sits on one stand as the rest of the group are sitting at the benches close by. Mew waits with anticipation for her battle and wonders how it will go for her. She looks at the other side of the stand to see Winona, ready for the battle.
Soon, two lifts take the two trainers up and above the battlefield, and soon stop.
Winona then kneels with her arms crossed, "Oh, great sky above, I ask that you grant us wings. Grant us your power to conquer even the strongest of stormy winds and, please, guide us to your great, blue world and let us share in its infinite power and majesty!"
"What's Winona doing?" May asks.
"Some kind of ritual?" Max wonders.
"Or a prayer?" Jen questions.
"I guess she believes is a powerful god watching over her," Brock says.
Mew turns to her Pokemon, "Pikachu, Eevee, are you both ready to win this and get our sixth badge?"
Pikachu and Eevee say in their language, (Let's do it.)
Soon, Zachary announces, "This gym battle between Fortree gym leader Winona and challenger Ashley of Pallet Town will now begin! Each trainer will use three Pokémon, the match will be called if either side's Pokémon have been defeated. Only the challenger is allowed to make substitutions.
"What Pokemon will Winona pick first?" Molly asks.
"Well, I can't wait to see," Max says.
Soon, Winona calls out, "Altaria, I choose you!"
"It's Altaria," Jen says.
"It's really beautiful," May says, bringing out her Pokedex.
Dextette says, "Altaria, the Humming Pokémon. A Dragon and Flying Type. Altaria glides up into the sky using its wings like sails to catch rising breezes."
I hope Altaria's beauty and gracefulness doesn't fool her," Brock says.
"You're right. Altaria is a Flying and a Dragon Type," Zinnia says
"Altaria, huh," Mew says. She says in thought, "A Dragon and Flying Type. Still, even if I use an Ice Type. So I better play it smart."
Mew then calls out, "Go Glaceon!"
And with that, Mew's Shiny Glaceon comes out.
"It's Glaceon!" Tomo says.
"Haven't seen her in a while," Brock says.
"Wow. Mew's Glaceon looks strong," May says and brings out her Pokedex.
"And it's a different color than how a normal Glaceon is," Max adds.
Dextette says, "Glaceon, the Fresh Snow Pokemon, and the evolved form of Eevee. An Ice Type. Glaceon is able to lower its body temperature very quickly. It freezes the atmosphere, creating diamond dust that glitters like gems while it flutters and dances around."
"Glaceon is an Ice Type so it has the advantage against a Flying and Dragon Type," Max says.
"True, however, Winona might be stronger, so it will come to strategy," Zinnia says.
Zachary announces, "Ready? Begin!"
Winona calls out, "Altaria, dive down!"
Altaria heads right at Shiny Glaceon.
Mew calls out, "Now, Glaceon, use Ice Beam!"
Shiny Glaceon fires the attack.
Then Winona calls out, "Dodge and Peck!"
Altaria evades the oncoming seeds and continues to dive down.
"Jump out of the way!" Mew calls out.
Shiny Glaceon does so, but Altaria pecks at her.
"Glaceon!" Jen calls out.
"This is not good," Tomo says.
Shiny Glaceon then lands on the ground.
"Good work, go for another Peck attack!" Winona calls out.
Mew calls out, "Glaceon, get up and move out of the way!"
Shiny Glaceon does so and mananges to climb up the totem pole before jumping off it and creating some distance.
"I'm impressed with your Glaceon. It's obvious from its quick reaction time that you raised it quite well. But, no one ever wins a battle on defense alone," Winona says.
Mew grits her teeth while Shiny Glaceon and Altaria stand off.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket was in some sort of labyrinth.
"Not only is this ridiculous, but it's also embarrassing," Jessie says.
James agrees, "We managed to follow Mew, Pikachu, and Eevee all the way to the gym and then get lost finding the battlefield? It's preposterous."
"You know what dey say, when da going gets tough, da tough get going, and in dis case, da tough get going on using plan b," Meowth says.
"We have a plan b?" Jessie asks
"For yous two's information, I hoid it trough da grape vine dat dere might just be treasure buried underneath dis gym," Mewoth says. Then pulls out two golden rods, "And dese here dowsing rods will have us dancin right to where it is."
"We'll be dancin?" Jessie and James ask.
And of course, Jessie and James cheer and dance with excitement.
And Meowth smacks them on the head, "I said we'll dance to the treasure, not the disco! You use these rods to find underground water currents like rivers and streams."
"But wait, we already failed at that water bottle scam," Jessie says.
"I don't want to repeat that," James says.
"These ain't water finers they're item finers," Meowth says, "Dese dowsing rods are meant ta be attracted ta gold like magnets ta metal."
"Come on," Jessie says.
"No offense, Meowth, but this is starting to sound like Horsea hooey," James says.
"Not true. I looked it up in the latest issue of consumer item finder quarterly, and these babies are ranked number one," Meowth says, "So let's get ta treasure hunting."
"In writing, James asks, still unsure.
"Let me guess how much they cost first," Jessie says.
Suddenly, the dowsing rods point to the right, straight down a hallway.
"They actually work? So it's worth every cent," Jessie says, shocked.
"It appears so, and they're pointing down that hallway," James says.
"Then what are we waiting for?!" Jessie says, natches the dowsing rods and heads down the hall with James.
James happily says, "There's a treasure down the hall. We're gonna have a ball."
"These rods are divine," Jessie says.
"I'm starting ta have second toughts about showing em dose tings," Meowth says.
Then Wobbuffet says, "Wobbuffet!" (Let's go, bub!)
Meanwhile, up on the battlefield
Winona calls out, "Alright, Altaria, Dragon Breath!"
Altaria fires the attack and hits Shiny Glaceon.
"Glaceon, no!" Mew cries out.
"A direct hit!" May says.
Shiny Glaceon continues standing after the Dragon Breath fades.
"Good work, now use Dragon Breath again!" Winona calls out.
Altaria fires the attack.
Mew calls out, "Glaceon, dodge it, now!"
Shiny Glaceon does the attack twice.
"That's the way, Glaceon! Keep up the pace and keep evading!" Mew calls out.
Shiny Glaceon continues on before Altaria overtakes him.
"That Glaceon has taken a few attacks and is still standing," Winona says.
Mew calls out, "Now Glaceon, use Ice Shard!"
Shiny Glaceon performs the attack and hits Altaria on the back.
Winona calls out, "Climb, Altaria, then use Dragon Breath, quickly!"
Altaria gains altitude and launches the attack
"Jump, now!" Mew calls out.
Shiny Glaceon does so, just in time before leaping off one of the podiums, the totem pole, shocking Winona.
Mew then calls out, "Now Glaceon, use Take Down!"
Glaceon charges down at Altario, and Altaria is brought down to the ground, hard.
"Altaria!" Winona calls out.
The dust fades to reveal Altaria was unconscious.
Zachary announces, "Altaria is unable to battle, Glaceon wins!"
"You did it, Glaceon!" Mew says.
"Glaceon," (Thank you.) Glaceon says.
"So that's it, even though she has the type advantage, Mew has Glaceon to pretend to run and wait for the perfect time to strike," Brock says.
"Glaceon was so fast, it was hard for Altaria to catch up," Jen says.
"I must say, your strategy was excellent. You caught me completely off-guard by faking me out with that retreating tactic," Winona says.
"Thanks, Winona, but don't forget that this match is just getting started!" Mew says.
"All too true, and I won't part with my badges that easily," Winona says.
"I wonder what Pokémon Winona will use next," May says.
Winona then calls out, "Alright, Pelipper, I choose you!"
Pelipper comes out.
"So, she's using a Pelipper, huh?" Mew says. Then calls back, "Okay, Glaceon, return!"
Glaceon has been called back.
"Ready to go, Pikachu?" Mew asks.
"Pika!" ("Sure am!") Pikachu says and leaps over the guard rail and onto the battlefield.
"Ashley chose Pikachu," Mew says.
"Smart move to bring out Pikachu," Zinnia says.
"Yeah. Pikachu had the advantage against Pelipper which is a water and flying type," Max says.
"Yeah. Mew will win this one for sure," Tomo says.
Winona scoffs, "I figured as much. Go ahead and give me your best shot."
Mew becomes confused and says in thought, "Winona must be up to something, but maybe I can play along.
She then says out loud, "Okay, if you say so. Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!"
Pikachu performs the attack.
Winona calls out, "Pelipper, use Steel Wing, now!"
Pelipper moves in, ready to strike, but the Thunderbolt strikes first.
"Alright!" Max cheers.
"Direct hit!" Jen says.
"What a powerful shot," May says.
However, Peilpper just looked forward.
"Hmmm..." Mew responds.
"No way!" May says, shocked.
"Pikachu's Thunderbolt didn't work," May says.
"It was powerful," Max say
Winona chuckles confidently.
Mew then notices that Pelipper's Steel Wing is actually on the ground, it makes her realize that Winona has used the attack to run it down to the ground.
Mew says in thought, "Smart move, Winona."
Meanwhile, down underneath the battlefield, Team Rocket kept looking for the supposed treasure.
"If we keep following where these rods are pointing, we'll be close to making our dreams of fortune come to be!" Jessie says.
The rods soon point up
"They're pointing up!" Jessie says.
They soon see one of the pillars emitting electricity.
"How's dat dere pilla emitting electricity?" Meowth asks.
Suddenly, the electricity travels down and strikes Jessie before her teammates are also zapped and sent flying all the way up to the battlefield.
"Ow," Jessie asks.
"Well, that was shocking, to say the least," Jessie says.
They soon see Pikachu pouring on the electrical power.
"That electricity we were zapped by sent us all the way up to the battlefield!" Jessie says.
"And we didn't have to stop and ask for directions," James says.
"Time to put away dose dowsing rods and move back to plan a," Meowth says.
"Right, but let's make ourselves known, first," Jessie says.
"Right," The boys agree.
They stand up and perform their motto.
Jessie:
Prepare for trouble and our favorite rhyme!
James:
We'll cut your battle short to save some time!
Jessie:
To protect the world from devastation!
James:
To unite all peoples within our nation!
Jessie:
To denounce the evils of truth and love!
James:
To extend our reach to the stars above!
Jessie:
Jessie!
James:
James!
Jessie:
Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!
James:
Surrender now, or prepare to fight, fight and fight!
Meowth:
Dat's right!
Wobbuffet:
Wobbuffet! (End of scene!)
Chimecho:
Chime Chime. (Thank you.)
Team Rocket notices that no one saw or even heard them.
Then they all dash over, "We're gonna get Pikachu! We're gonna get...!"
The trio charge, but the electricity gets attracted to them by the dowsing rods and sends them flying once again.
"The rods show that Pikachu was the treasure. A rather painful one," Jessie says.
"That rat's worth its weight in gold, but I agree," James says.
"It's only woith fool's gold," Meowth says.
"Wobbuffet!" (You said it!) Wobbuffet agrees.
Team Rocket cries out, "Team Rocket's blasting off again!"
They both end up dropping the rods.
Mew calls out, "Pikachu, stop using Thunderbolt!"
Pikachu then stops the attack. Then one of the rods hits his head. Then another hit Pelipper.
The explosion ends up catching everyone's attention, but no one is there as they look around.
"Did any of you hear that?" Mew asks.
"Was that an explosion?" Winona questions.
May asks, "Did any of you hear that?"
"Or see that?" Max says.
"I thought I just heard Team Rocket," Zinnia says.
"Weird," Brock says.
Mew turns to Winona, "Uh, let's focus on the battle, fair."
"Works for me," Winona says. Then calls out, "Pelipper, use Quick Attack, now!"
Pelipper starts to move forward while holding the position it took with Steel Wing pointing to the ground.
"Quick Attack and Dodge!" Mew calls out.
Pikachu uses Quick Attack to dodge the attack. And everyone ends up seeing how Pelipper survives the first attack.
"Look. Pelipper had its Steel Wing touching the ground," Tomo says.
"Of course, Pelipper used a Steel Ring to divert the electrical current to the ground like a lightning rod.
" Use Quick Attack!" Mew calls out.
Pikachu darts forward.
Winona then calls out, "Pelipper, use Hydro Pump!"
Pelipper fires the attack and hits Pikachu.
"Hang on, Pikachu! Stand your ground!" Mew calls out.
Pikachu tries to stand his ground. Mew then noticesPelipper starting to move forward before it lifted its wing off the ground a bit
"Pikachu, Thunder, now!" Mew calls out.
Pikachu launches the attack, which travels along the Hydro Pump right back to Pelipper, and this time it feels the jolt.
"Pelipper!" Winona calls out.
Soon, both Pokémon are knocked back and collapse, defeated.
"Pikachu and Pelipper are both unable to continue!" Zachary says.
"Wow. It's a double knock out," Zinnia says.
"I thought Pikachu was going to win for sure," Max says.
"I guess the Hydro Pump was too much for him," Brock says.
"Yeah, but he was able to get Pelipper shocked at the same time. Must have lift its wing off the ground," Jen says.
Mew soon picks Pikachu up, "Are you okay, pal?"
"Pika." (I'm good.) Pikachu says.
"You were awesome. Wet, but awesome," Mew says.
She then looks up at a chuckling Winona.
She grits her teeth and has determination in her eyes, "I won't give up so easily."
Moments later, Mew returns to the podium and is ready to continue with the battle.
Soon, Winona says, "Ashley, on days that are so beautiful and clear like today, my flying Pokémon and I are able to manifest much greater power than we're able to in less perfect conditions. Those of us whose dreams reach toward the sky are loved by the sky in return."
"Wow. That's amazing," Mew says.
"That's right," Winona says, "And now let me introduce you to another sky-loving Pokémon!" And throws her Pokeball.
Out of this Pokeball is a Swellow, but this one is in a different color. The feathers are a green and white color, along with orange under the beak and on the chest, even the talons are orange.
"Check out the colors on that Swellow!" Max says.
"Yeah. Winona has a Shiny Swellow," Jen says.
"I've never seen a Swellow look like that," May says.
"Neither have I," Zinnia says.
"It's more amazing than her Skarmory yesterday," Brock says.
"So, you're gonna do battle with a Swellow, huh?" Mew says, "Let's see if I can freeze it in its tracks. Go Glaceon!"
And Shiny Glaceon comes out.
"Glaceon, use Ice Fang!" Mew calls out.
Shiny Glaceon then performs the attack and manages to hit it with full force.
"That was fast!" Max says.
"And powerful!" Molly says.
Swellow soon recovers in midair
"Swellow, use Aerial Ace, quick!" Winona calls out.
"Uh on!" Mew says.
Swellow starts flying in a strange pattern.
"Don't let that circling pattern throw you off, jump around and then hit it with Ice Beam!" Mew calls out.
Shiny Glaceon then jumps from the pillar to post, but misses as Swellow lands a hard shot, shocking everyone.
"Glaceon!" Mew calls out.
Swellow then takes Shiny Glaceon up into the sky before slamming her down to the ground, hard. When the dust clears, Shiny Glaceon is knocked out.
Zachary announces, "Glaceon is unable to battle, Swellow wins!"
"Good job! Excellent work, Swellow." Winona says.
"Wow. That Aerial Ace is powerful," Molly says.
"Max, what's an Aerial Ace?" May asks.
"In Aerial Ace is when usually, a Flying Pokeon starts by going into some sort of strange flying pattern and then it vanishes for a sight for at least a second before pulling the trigger and landing the attack."
"And since the opponent can't fight what you can't see, even if it disappears for just a second," Brock says.
"And some Pokemon that are not flying Types can actually use that attack, depending on its abilities," Zinnia adds.
"And that Aerial Ace is one attack to beat," Jen says.
"But what can Mew do?" Jen whispers.
Mew calls it back, "Glaceon, return.
Shiny Glaceon is called back.
"You did great, but you earned a break. Okay, time for my final pick," Mew says and brings out her Pokeball, "And I'll match your Swellow, with my own!"
"Now this is getting interesting," Zinnia says.
"Yeah. I can't believe Mew's choice," Max says.
"It's Swellow against Swellow," May says.
"Well, Winona's Swellow is used to battling this way, but Ashley's own Swellow may be another story," Brock says.
"I thought you might bring out your own Swellow, Ashley. Now let's make this one a battle for the record books!" Winona says.
"Right, time to see if I have command of the sky like you do, Winona," Mew says, "Get ready to hand me my sixth badge!"
"I like that confidence, Ashley. Ready to go?" Winona says.
"Yep," Mew says.
Soon, both trainers' platforms rise as high as they can go.
"Wow. They're battling way high up," May says.
"That's because they're battling Flying Types," Max says.
"That's right. Being that high helps both of them keep an eye on their Swellow, no matter where they end up on the battlefield. Of course, the downside is when battling up this high, the wind can play a huge role in what happens. It's demanding on the trainer as well as their Pokemon.
Zachary announces, "This final battle will be a Sky Battle between both trainers' Swellow! If both trainers are ready, begin!"
"Alright, Swellow, let's take flight and use speed to charge in and use Peck," Mew says.
Mew's Swellow soon begins to fly towards.
"Swellow, charge in and stay on course!" Winona calls out.
The two Swellow collide and Mew's Swellow heads downward to the ground
"Swellow, hang on!" Mew calls out.
"It's falling!" May says.
"Try to pull yourself back into this, Swellow!" Mew calls out.
"Perfect timing and perfect positioning for this! Swellow, close in and Peck!" Winona calls out.
Winona's Swellow does so and lands several shots on Mew's Swellow's back.
"Swellow better do something, fast!" Max says.
"I was worried about this, Winona's Swellow has more experience fighting in sanctioned Sky Battles," Brock says.
"It's going to crash!" May cries out.
Mew then calls out, "Swellow, climb!"
Mew's Swellow does so, saving itself.
"That was too close!" Max says.
"Way too close!" Zinnia says.
"Go, Swellow, fire a Hyper Beam!" Winona calls out.
Swellow fires the attack.
Mew calls out, "Dodge it!"
Mew's Swellow evades in time and also evades two other attacks.
"Fire another Hyper Beam, 30 degrees to the left!" Winona calls out.
Winona's Swellow fires and hits Mew's Swellow.
"Swellow, no!" Mew calls out.
"Now, climb quickly, then go into a dive and fire your Hyper Beam at 15 degrees!" Winona calls out.
Winona's Swellow does so and gets into striking position.
"Swellow, look out!" Brock calls out.
Winona's Swellow fires the attack.
"I don't think so!" Mew calls out, "Swellow, spin out and use Quick Attack!"
Mew's Swellow does so.
Then Winona calls out, "Alright, go for an Aerial Ace!"
Winona's Swellow does so, disappearing for a second before nailing Mew's Swellow and leaving Mew says.
"Swellow!" Mew cries out.
"Hold on, I thought Aerial Ace was an offensive attack," Tomo says.
"Yeah, but somehow, Winona was able to use it for a defensive attack," Max says.
"How did she pull that off?" Jen asks.
"Winona must have trained her Swellow to use Aerial Ace to use it for defense and offense. She's unbeatable with that attack," Winona says.
"So unless Mew can think of something, Swellow is in trouble," Tomo says.
Swellow goes down in a wobbly nose dive.
"Winona's Swellow is getting close," May says.
"And either attack will knock Ashley's Swellow out of the sky," Max says.
"Speed up, Swellow! Try to shake it off at full speed!" Mew calls out.
Mew's Swellow tries, but Winona's Swellow is still dogging its tail feathers.
"Swellow can't shake it off," Molly says.
"You were right, Brock. With how good Winona is, Ashley might not have a chance," Max says.
"She better think of something," Zinnia says.
Mew says in thought, "Thinks Mew, think. There's got to be a way to shut down that Aerial Ace."
She then notices the dust blowing along the battlefield. Then she remembers seeing Swellow kick up some dust when it pulled up before hitting the ground after getting hit by several Pecks.
Mew has an idea, "Of course! We might be able to win if we do that."
Winona then says, "I have to compliment you, Ashley, for making it this far, but I'm afraid this is where it all ends. Swellow, use Hyper Beam to wrap this up!"
Winona's Swellow then charges the attack while everyone braces, holds their breath, shuts their eyes or looks away.
"I can't look!" Max cries out.
Mew calls out, "This is it! Go for a diving Quick Attack!"
Mew's Swellow does so.
"Launch your Hyper Beam, Go!" Winona calls out.
And Winona's Swellow fires its Hyper Beam, Mew's Swellow evades as both birds dive down at a high rate of speed.
"They're both doing a nose dive!" May cries out.
"They're going to crash!" Molly cries out.
Both Pokémon continue to plummet toward the ground
"I can't take it anymore!" Max cries out.
"Aerial Ace, now!" Winona calls out.
Winona's Swellow goes up, loops and dives down.
Mew then calls out, "Swellow, aim a Wing Attack at the ground!"
Mew's Swellow does so, creating a large dust cloud, blinding it.
"Alright Swellow, this is it! Use Wing Attack, once more!"
Mew's Swellow shoots up at top speed and strikes at Winona's Swellow with full force.
Winona cries out, "Swellow, no!"
"Oh, yeah," Mew says.
Winona's Swellow promptly hits the ground, defeated.
Zachary announces, "Winona's Swellow is unable to continue, the victory goes to Ashley!"
"We did it! Great job, Swellow," Mew says.
Everyone celebrates Mew's victory.
"She won!" Max and Jen cheer.
"What a great battle!" Tomo says.
"I was afraid she wasn't going to pull it off," Mew says.
"Talk about an unexpected turnaround!" Zinnia says.
"Yeah. Shutting down that Aerial Ace took real skill," Brock says, "Firing Wing Attack on ground revealed Winona's Swellow's position in a curtain of dust as it flew in was a real smart strategy."
"And once Swellow used the second attack," Max says.
"Bull's eye!" May says.
"I wish I could have seen it," Jen says.
"Me too, but it really worked," Tomo says.
"Yeah. Mew has her own style of handling a situation like this," Brock says.
Later that evening...
Winona presents the badge, "Congratulations, Ashley. Now, take this Feather badge as proof of your victory against me in a gym battle," And hand her the badge.
The Feather Badge is shaped like feathers on a bird's wing.
"Thanks, Winona," Mew says and takes her badge, "My sixth badge."
Pikachu and Eevee are happy that Mew won.
"Congratulations, Ashley," Zinnia says.
"You were awesome," Tomo says.
"Great battle," May says.
"And right to the end," Max says.
"Thanks guys, "May says.
Winona agrees, "They're right, that Wing Attack dust cloud was totally unique. I guess that proves you and your Pokémon really trust each other."
"Thanks, but I'd hate to take anything away from the Genius of the Sky, and your own flying was pretty fancy and powerful," Mew says.
"Why thank you, Ashley, "Winona says. She then asks, "But I have one question, how'd it feel to fly?"
"It felt awesome!" Mew says.
After emerging victorious in a Sky Battle above the Fortree gym, Mew manages to win her sixth badge. Now her goal to enter the Hoenn League is closer than ever, and we'll be there every step of the way!
