Adam Taurus came off as a sophisticated, dark, edgy warrior. He was turned into an incel abuser. But what if he stayed true to his initial depictions... And went even MORE chuuni?

To wit, he wanted a rival. A true equal, in fighting and intellect?

Written with RedReaper.

Cinder prepared to utilize her fireballs to end Whitley (who just happened to be here in Vale)...

When Adam raises his arm, his masked gaze piercing. "Wait."

"What is it? You better have a good reason for halting his execution, Adam."

The Faunus nods and begins speaking softly. "Tell me your favorite piece of literature's author."

Whitley sneers. "William Blake."

Adam sighs in relief, drawing his sword. "Finally, someone of TASTE. Cinder, this battle is MINE."

The white haired boy scoffs, drawing his own katana. "Yes, Cinder. Keep yourself from our clash." Smirking, he prepares to strike. "How prudent of you to be well-read. But sharing my proclivities will not spare you from the Son of the Schnees."

The Half-Maiden looks between them with narrowed eyes. "What...what is happening here?"

Emerald shrugs.

Mercury crosses his arms and focuses on the fight silently.

"No, seriously, I need someone to tell me what's going on-"

Or... Perhaps he would find Jaune a superior challenge?

Adam had cornered Blake as Beacon fell around them. He was about to strike a final blow... He turned to cross blades with a blond young man who had charged him. Their swords clashed.

Blake looked up in shock and fear.

"Jaune-No-RUN-!"

Adam stared into the young man's eyes. Jaune glared back defiantly.

"What is your favorite poem and by which author?" Adam asked.

Jaune blinked.

"Eh?"

"Answer," Adam growled. Jaune coughed.

"Ahhh... Um... I like 'The Passing of Arthur' by Tennyson?"

Adam hummed...

"Not 'Charge of the Light Brigade?"

"Oh no, I love that one too!" Jaune said with a nod, "And Kipling-I-I mean, who wouldn't?"

Adam blinked a few times.

"... What about... Invictus by Henley?"

"Oh yeah, my mom made me memorize that one," Jaune said.

"Wha-You know poetry?!" Blake demanded, and despite her injuries she seemed offended. "Why didn't you say so?!"

"Er... You didn't ask?" Jaune offered.

Adam sighed in relief, and smiled.

"At last. A worthy challenge," he said.

Blake scowled.

"Why exactly are you... What even is this, Adam?!"

Adam shrugged.

"'There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own.'"

"Oh, Moby Dick!" Jaune recognized. Adam was now smiling.

"You know more than just the quotes from Space Quest: The Wrath of Khan?"

"Yeah, but that's what led me to get into it!" Jaune said, almost cheerfully. Adam sighed.

"It will be a shame to kill you."

"I'm... Pretty broken up about it too," Jaune managed.

Blake, for her part, was glaring daggers at Adam.

"Why aren't you quoting any Faunus poets, Adam?! You made such a big deal out of it-!"

"Quiet darling, the men are talking," Adam stated firmly.

"I'M YOUR RIVAL, ADAM!" Blake, outraged, cried.

Adam gave her an incredulous look.

"What? No, you're my love interest."

"Wha-YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE OBSESSED WITH ME!"

"Hm? Why?"

"I-I mean... I defied you!" Blake insisted angrily.

Adam shook his head.

"Blake, I let you run. I had every confidence I could bring you back later, or you'd make your way back. I do need to marry you so we can rule Faunuskind together... But a man cannot put his woman ahead of his rivals! You can't just insist on being the only thing in my life! I have my own needs as an individual!"

Blake's jaw fell to the floor.

"WHAT?! I'M SUPPOSED TO BE THE CENTER OF YOUR WORLD! ON YOUR MIND ALL THE TIME! YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE CONSUMED WITH HAVING ME!"

Adam sighed and looked over at Jaune in exasperation.

"Bitches man, huh?"

Jaune winced.

"Um..."

"JAUNE!" Blake cried angrily.

"I hate having to take sides between friends!"

And later, when Whitley and Jaune meet and their need for a rivalry reignites things... Adam ends up feeling like Whitley and Jaune are two-timing their respective rivalries with him for one with each other (not at all being self-aware that's exactly what he HIMSELF is doing to them).

"You...you fight HIM too?!"

"Of course I would. Anything to gain POWER." Whitley says dismissively, eyes still trained on his foe.

Jaune scratches the back of his head. "And I kind of have to stop him. So yeah."

Adam is heartbroken. "But...but I thought what we had was SPECIAL!"

"What are you going on about?"

"Yeah, I'm with Whit-What are you talking about?"

"Our...our RIVALRY!" Can be heard between Adam's quiet tears.
