(13)-Happy Birthday, Cobey.
The ice-cream cake now rested on the table, with the clear lid off and resting beside it, and all of the empty DQ items had been disgarded in the trash by Kyle, except for the half-full soda cups and the napkins. He hadn't thrown away the spoons he and Cobey had eaten the sundae with, as they were going to use them to eat some of the ice-cream cake. The 18-year old had also retrieved three plates from the kitchen, with the two spoons resting on two of them-his and Cobey's, along with a knife-which was resting on Megan's plate in front of her next to a spoon Kyle had also retrieved from the kitchen drawer. Kyle had returned to his seat and Megan was seated by Cobey on his left. The ice-cream cake was white and had confetti sprinkles on it.
"WOW." Kyle, Cobey and Megan said with amazement as they stared wide-eyed at the ice-cream cake.
"That's the most well made ice-cream cake i've ever seen. It looks just like a real cake." Cobey said.
"You said it. And now only one more thing left to do." Megan said.
"Oh, yeah, what's that?" Cobey asked.
"This. 1...2...3." Megan began before she started singing.
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to y-
"No! No!" Cobey said, cutting Megan off. "No BD."
"I'm with ya on that one, buddy." Kyle said.
"You don't like birthday songs anymore?" Megan asked.
"It's not that i don'tblike them, it's just that...i don't think they're for someone my age." Cobey said.
"I know what ya mean. When i was your age, i didn't care for birthday songs anymore either. That reminds me...how old are you today?" Kyle asked. He had been so distracted by situation with Cobey's adopted monster mother and telling him about his home-town and dysfunctional home life, he hadn't even thought to ask the kid his knew age.
"I'm 9." Cobey said.
"9 Years old. I knew you had to be at least 8 or 9, you look too old to be 6 or 7." Kyle said and joked.
"I'll take that as a complement." Cobey said. "Now, then, let's dig into this ice-cream cake, shall we?"
"Yeah." Kyle agreed.
"Wait. I just remembered...Cobey, there's one more thing you should do before we cut the cake." Megan said.
"What's that?" Cobey asked, confused.
"Well, normally, i would say make a wish and blow out the candles first, but...i didn't bring any, so...there goes that. Sorry, Cobey." Megan said.
"That's okay, Miss Megan. I don't need the wish. It's already come true." Cobey assured.
"Oh, yeah, what was it?" Kyle asked.
"Usually i don't tell what my birthday wishes are...but since this one has already come true...i see no harm in telling either of you. My wish was...to be with people who loved and cared about me. And here i am...with you and Miss Megan. You and Miss April made my birthday wish come true...and that's the best gift anyone could give me. I don't need any more presents. I have everything i want right here. Thank you, Kyle...and Miss Megan. You're the best friends i could ever ask for." Cobey said.
"That's good to know, Cobey." Megan said while smiling, touched by the boy's speech. "But can't take any credit. After all, if it wasn't for Miss April calling the office and Kyle calling the cops, i never would've found out what was going on and come to your rescue."
"Hey, you're right. We're gonna have to do something nice for Miss April in return for her help. Something really nice. But what?" Cobey said.
"I don't know. Maybe we can think of something while we're eating some of this ice-cream cake." Megan said.
"You read my mind. Let's eat some of this ice-cream cake before it melts." Kyle added.
Megan picked up the knife and began to cut the ice-cream cake...the first piece being for Cobey.
