A/N Syg, there may actually be canonical evidence to support your supposition. Just before Buffy found the disk with the curse on it Willow told her she'd gone through all Jenny's stuff, that she had to in order to teach the class. It's doubtful Jenny had everything she needed for her class at school. A lot of teachers have offices at home and grade papers and put together lesson plans at home. So it's possible Willow went through Jenny's home looking for things involved in teaching the class, ran across Jenny's Magic paraphernalia, including the texts Jenny refered to when she said she was writing a translation program to try to recreate the curse. Wannabe witch Willow thinks 'oh Ms. Calendar would probably want me to have these since she was willing to teach me a few things' and into Willow's collection they go. And Willow herself said she'd snuck into Giles' office to peak at Magic books he didn't think she was ready for, in front of Giles and we never saw him reprimand her on that. It's perfectly within Willow's character to do that.
Plus the Buffy wiki itself says that there were differences between what Willow cast and what Jenny's ancestor cast. Jenny also never had a chance to examine the translation and see that some of it was off and it probably would never have occured to Willow that it might be off. In the last Marvel crossover I did, I had Dr. Strange show the Scoobies both the original and the one Willow did. The one the ancestor did grabbed a random wondering spirit, not the soul that occupied Liam's body at the time of his death. And the one Willow did specified a soul from the evil realms, a Hell. Two different souls being tortured for the crimes of a demon. Joss said the soul was a plot device and one he didn't want to use, he was pressured to find a way to get Buffy and Angel together, the method used shows just how much he didn't like the idea. Check out the Buffy wiki regarding the translation.

SG 1 boarded a plane for Vandenberg Air Force Base, an hour's drive from the city of Sunnydale.
"The more I research Sunnydale the weirder it becomes." Major Carter complained. "It's a port city with international trade contracts. A city with less than forty thousand people. San Diego, also in California and also a port city, has a population of more than a million. With the constant influx of people Sunnydale should have grown just as large. But going by the obituary column in the one and only local newspaper, aside from Sunnydale High School's paper, which also had an obituary column, a couple hundred people a year died or disappeared on a yearly basis. Reports in the newspaper indicated a huge spillover of gang activity from Los Angeles but there has never been an official investigation."
"But there may have been an unofficial one, given the comments the President made to General Hammond." Daniel pointed out. "And whatever they found may be connected to the project that produced Jack's daughter."
"So we've already decided she's my daughter and someone isn't playing some kind of game with me." O'Neill muttered.
"Pretty sick and twisted if it is a game." Daniel answered.
"Indeed." Teal'c agreed. "In which case I will swear an Oath of Vengeance and aid O'Neill in destroying whoever would dare do such a thing."
"Thanks T, I appreciate it. Anything else we should know before we get there, Carter?"
"Aside from the many anomalies, no." She shook her head.
"Than let's try to get some rest, the flight will only last about two hours and then an hour's drive after that."
"That's a National Guard Base right outside Sunnydale." Major Carter looked up. "I just found that tidbit of information, it was an Army fort for decades, starting before the official founding of Sunnydale. It might be a good idea to stop there and visit with the CO, get their take on Sunnydale."
"I agree." O'Neill nodded. "There should be a car waiting for us when we get to Vandenberg and we'll get rooms at a hotel for the night and than look around the town tomorrow before going to see...my daughter."
"An international air port." Carter muttered. "A huge zoo, a museum, three High Schools, a private school, two colleges. There's not enough people to account for all of that."
"It's a trap." O'Neill murmured. "The attractions are for luring new people in, make the town look good to families who want to get away from big city crime and pollution. The advisements don't mention the gang spillover or obituary columns and most people are going to assume a city that size just doesn't have those kind of problems. People see what they want to see and they want to see a peaceful little city on the coast, not a death trap. Long term planning went into making Sunnydale what it is and someone stopped it, whatever it was."
The rest of the flight passed in silence and the drive to Sunnydale did as well. They discovered the National Guard Base had some weirdness of its own.
"Since when is a National Guard Base associated with religious icons?" Daniel asked. "Every single building has a cross worked into the door, you can clearly see it. And what's with the mirrors over the entrance and why did the guards check them before letting us in?"
"All very good questions and I don't think we're going to get any real answers from the CO." O'Neill stated. "Beyond some vague handwaving explanation. Come on, let's get this over with and get to Sunnydale."
